Serenade of the Soul(Yaksha/Sofia) Empty Serenade of the Soul(Yaksha/Sofia)

Why was it, Yaksha wondered, that the humans spent so much time trying to convince themselves that there was nothing out there worth comprehending? Why did so many people spend all of their time with their faces stuck in a near-permanent expression of slack-jawed disinterest? He'd observed it time and time again; they would walk right past signs and then demand that the information be given to them, when it was already standing right there to be found? What was it about humans that would lead them to outright refuse to find the information for themselves?

Was it perhaps the simple fact that they could? Was it that simple; humans would ignore the signs, refuse to glance at the world around them, would dismiss all of the evidence of their eyes as irrelevant, because simply knowing those facts would cut down on the social interaction? Learning was itself a social process after all. There was power, great power, in a simple exchange of words and pleasantries. Even if the entire conversation was scripted, totally predictable in every way...there was still that sense that there was a second player. That you weren't shouting into a void; that if you opened your mouth, you could always reasonably expect an answer.

Or perhaps Yaksha was giving the humans too much credit. It wasn't the first time he did something like that, after all; humans were often notoriously simple, so simple that it almost looped around into a sort of perverse complexity. What else could you call something but complexly simple when you could track a person's actions only by the way they contradicted themselves? It was absurd to watch sometimes, how quickly and easily a human would put their own foot in their mouth, or change their opinion at the drop of a hat. Yaksha had watched for years, for centuries in fact...and it never changed. Not truly. All that changes was the terminology.

And they called Yaksha insane.

Perhaps, by hollow standards, he was; he was one of the few hollows who really tried to polish his skills in rhetoric, to be certain. And he may well have been the only hollow to put an active effort into protecting these mortals. Not that they appreciated it, of course; all too often, the closest he'd get to thanks is a person's babbled shouts of fear and confusion as he soothed them into silence.

Like right now, for instance. A woman, perhaps in her fourties, wearing a sporty outfit that had already told Yaksha she was trying desperately to deny the progression of time. He leaned against a wall in the alleyway, a hollow dangling from his hand. It seemed to resemble a spider, and one of Yaksha's hands was thoroughly cocooned in silk at the moment; to his credit, he seemed more amused than concerned, bashing the hollow into the ground over and over, as if he were playing with a yo-yo.

"Look, I don't know how to be any clearer here. You're free to go. I don't want your money, or your soul. I don't care who would miss you if you were to disappear from this world. You don't have to persuade me not to kill you."

He looked at the sky, rolling his eyes and muttering a soft curse to himself. Why was it always the humans who were able to be heard, when they rose their voices to the sky? Why was it that those who could never appreciate the simple pleasure of the touch of flesh on flesh were the ones who had it in such free supply? It seemed, to Yaksha, the old adage was true.

"Life is wasted on the living. Honestly."

THE QUINCY PRODIGY

Artist: 繁中字幕 - Song: 우리 그냥 사랑하게 해주세요

Had it not been for the nature of the streets she walked, the end of the day would have seemed pleasant, and the dawn of the night welcomed. America was not an area the Quincy prodigy frequented, and certainly not one she found appealing. For quite a while, the country had become enslaved by the demonic occupation. The dark intent of the demons, and the presence of the Hollow kind was felt everywhere. Although the Humans were still allowed to continue on with their daily lives, their numbers had plummeted as had their chances to thrive within a society that placed their interests far below the rest. It was a sad and pitiful sight. It was one of the many reasons the Quincy continued on their plight to further their race, and deliver the Earth back into human hands.

There was no denying that Humans were weak when compared to the rest of the spiritual races. It had long been established by both her family and Sofia herself that Quincy were a needed evolution of the Human race. They were believed to be the evolution needed to prevent extinction, and to have a chance to regain their rights to the planet. Unfortunately, the Quincy would see themselves through culling and genocide brought upon in part due to their disorganized and misled beliefs, as well as the hatred and jealousy from the other races. Sofia was chosen along with some of the remaining renowned Quincy, to continue to push on the legacy of their kind. With their numbers dwindling, it was up to the select few to redefine the Wandenreich, and set a foundation that would be difficult to destroy, in hopes of attaining the goals that seemed just as difficult to obtain.

”Right now…?

Her voice seemed indicative of someone that was frustrated, irritated, and in some way likely upset. The main reason for her travels to America had been due to a very peculiar mission. There was what seemed to be a rather invasive and dangerous disease occurring in the city of Chicago. Leading her men in the Jagdarmee, the Quincy prodigy along with fellow Captain Toshiko and the Quincy Elect Niflheim had battled a gigantic beast of power that was beyond comprehension. With the skirmishes having finished, she attempted to find a way to enjoy the remainder of her time in the country without eliciting too much attention to herself. Alas, it seemed wherever she went, the circumstances were always the same. The weak were preyed upon by the powerful, and the Hollow kind continued on their mindless siege of the human souls.

Just a little longer.

As she approached the area where the spiritual signals originated, something rather peculiar set her off. One of the Hollow’s spiritual signal had disappeared. It hadn’t fled however. Instead, it seemed as though its existence had been erased. Strangely enough, the human had managed to flee. It certainly did not fit any of the scenarios she imagined, and the notion of the results puzzled her. The intrigue continued to eat away at her as she neared on the location of the remaining Hollow. And, just moments after the Human’s departure, a near blinding light and a harden step would caution the Hollow as to the prodigy’s arrival, not more than 20 feet or so away from him.

As was usual for her, the famous musician was clothed in vestments that reveled in her exquisite taste, in her sense of function over fashion, and in her loyalty to the style and the color of the Quincy uniform. Her outfit consisted of a white top that displayed a pronounced v-like shape that curved in a peculiar way over her breasts, seemingly enhancing whatever sizable and noticeable heft they possessed. A rather short and unopened white collared jacket was worn over it. On her left and right sleeve, she wore the symbol of the Wandenreich and the Montero family shield respectively. Her white pants looked clean, and tight hugging enough to stick to the point where one could have confused them for a second layer of skin. It seemed to hug her body nicely, contouring easily to the curves of her body, namely some of her best assets, like her butt. A pair of black gloves and matching black boots finished the look, along with a blue scarf wrapped around her neck.

”You. Hollow. Speak if you’re able to, and pray your answer does not lead to your end.”

While it was certainly unlike Sofia to try and be violent upon a first meeting and at a moment’s glance, certain occasions merited. She had yet to meet a Hollow or an Arrancar that was not befitting to be killed upon acquaintance. The only reason why she hadn’t in this case was because she was curious as to what had happened. Even then however, her curiosity could grow thin rather quickly. It was not unlike the Hollow to use Humans as bait to lure, kill, and devour stronger and more satisfying beings, even if they were of their own kind. Rare as it was though, the prodigy was allowing the Hollow the benefit of the doubt. It was a graceful touch of mercy she had never seen herself perform with their kind before. If the Hollow was to see any good come out of his situation, it would be better to choose his words carefully or otherwise succumb to the results that came from crossing the devout Captain of the Jagdarmee.

"Does your father know you're walking around dressed like that? I'm willing to bet your grandfather is rolling over in his grave. Or your great-grandfather, if you're lucky enough to have a living grandfather. Do humans still live about the lifespan of three generations...?"

Yaksha's voice was soft, melodic, and absolutely unlike what one would expect from a hollow. He sounded smug, knowing, and more than anything he sounded like he was having the time of his life right now. There was no concern there, no fear, absolutely no worry that his life was in danger. He spoke with the same confidence a man would've if he'd simply seen her walking into a store, and asked for a pound of salami.

"Don't mind me, dear. I'm on my way out. I've just had a perfectly acceptable meal, and I see no need to stick around and wait for the proper authorities to come along and try me for an act of wanton kindness towards humans. They get remarkably testy about things like that, you know; playing against the type."

He inclined his head ever so slightly, hands resting by his side. Had Sofia wanted to, she could've planted an arrow into his mask with the same ease she could've poked it with a finger. He examined her calmly, with that sense of world-encompassing confidence, with an almost brazen boldness that said he knew all too well that she wouldn't fire on him.

THE QUINCY PRODIGY

Artist: 달샤벳 - Song: 조커

Really?

His words were odd, uncalled forth, and rather surprising. Instead of eliciting an upset response or distress however, they would elicit quite the opposite response. After all, her family had been one devoted to the Wandenreich and their ideals. Their utmost wanted goal was for Sofia to continue to improve to become the best incarnation of the Quincy the Montero family had ever seen. If her ancestors could indeed see her, they would be baffled and full of pride at the height their family had been exalted to. The Quincy prodigy had done her duty and exceeded in spades. Despite her young age, she was on par, and had become even stronger than people of her kind with centuries more experience than her. She had even become able to go toe to toe, and in some ways even exceed the might of the Elect of the Wandenreich, a being who was extremely powerful and over a millennia old.

”I suppose that was meant as an insult. But unfortunately. I don’t really care. And you’re going anywhere.”

Much like the Hollow before her, the Quincy prodigy spoke calmly, without fear, and with an ever present sense of elegance. She had been known to maintain that same serene composure even when up against beings who far exceeded her own might. Using her mastery over hirenkyaku, the famous musician would seem to disappear in a blinding blur. For the seemingly less spiritually significant Hollow, the first traces of her location would stem from the soft, semi sultry whisper that was mumbled behind him.

”Not yet anyways.”

In a sudden movement, Sofia would draw one of her seele schneider but keep it unignited for the time being. With the momentum, she would try and slam the handle of the item into the back of the Hollow. Since the seele was not ignited, it shouldn’t have caused much damage, if any at all. It wouldn’t be able to break skin or draw blood. Though the Quincy prodigy used speed as a basis for her attacks, she lacked the physical strength to deliver might through the actions she performed solely based on it. Still, the hit should have been felt enough to at least cause some certain degree of noticeable discomfort and pain. In a way, she saw her actions as rather fitting for the situation. Despite not feeling hurt, there had been an attempt to insult her. And though likely unknown to the beast, beyond the love for the Quincy plight, the Montero family centered around pride, and the efforts placed in safeguarding it.

”What happened to the human? What happened to the other Hollow?”

She had purposely left her questions short, and to the point. Deviating from the response or resorting to winded explanations or further insults would not go any better for him. Though another attempt at a hit would certainly follow should that be the case, it wouldn’t be unlike her to try and finish off what seemed to be eating away at whatever patience she still had. The rule of thumb was to eliminate Hollows on site, and the benefit of the doubt she continued to give seemed to run short, and dangerously more lethal for him with every passing second.

"I ate the hollow, raped the woman, then grew a Snidely Whiplash moustache, stroked it for about ten minutes as I foreclosed on half a billion homes, and finished it off by ripping the unborn child's spirit out of her womb, and jumping rope with the umbilical cord. Is that suitably stereotypical for you? Sound like the kind of thing a hollow would do? Poe's law is still alive and well in the world, you know."

Yaksha made no attempt to stop her attack, simply craning his head over his shoulder, glancing down at the wound; it was shallow, but impressively done. She'd moved so rapidly that he had no time to even predict where she was going to strike from. He inhaled slowly, turned slowly, his hands spread wide open. He looked at her, his expression one of deeply strained patience; somehow, with no eyebrows, with no discernable nose or lips, the hollow was still able to exude an aura of wounded pride, as he stared at her.

"The woman is fine. The hollow was my only interest. I did your work for you. I know that vigilante work isn't normally that welcome in civilized society, and if you deem murder the appropriate response, I can hardly fault you. Since, you know. I'd be dead and obliterated. But I would be sorely wounded in the couple of seconds I had between death and oblivion. I don't even mind the violence, honestly. It's what I've come to expect. But if I wanted monosyllabic grunts and blatant threats on my life, I'd go back to Hueco Mundo and start stepping on hollows' toes. Can you at least do me the justice of acting like a civilized human being as you kill me? You know, last words, look me in the eyes, all of that stuff? It's important you know. Not for me; for you, I mean. It's important, for yourself and your well-being. That you not forget what it means to kill another person."

THE QUINCY PRODIGY

Artist: 헬로비너스 Song: 난 예술이야

Initially, the prodigy had more than enough reason to be angry. Though the words of the Hollow would soon be shown to be nothing more than sarcasm she had almost felled for it nonetheless. Still, she found it difficult to follow through what she knew she had to do. To strike him down. To end him right there and then. It certainly wasn’t the first time she had been placed in such a position, but it was definitely the first time she had doubted and struggled with the decision for so long.

The way he talked, and the way he communicated simply didn’t match up. He had allowed the human to go, and she had been semi certain he had dealt with the Hollow all along. The issue was elsewhere however. His behavior was indicative of a being that possessed a different, perhaps even more refined or evolved state of mind. It was common among the enlightened living as well as other races, but hardly unheard of in Hollows. Even in Arrancar, whose form and newfound state of mind usually allowed for more coherent and level headed though, usually succumbed to the dark nature and intent of their treacherous roots. Alas, she couldn’t sense any intent from the lizard like being that connected him to any of his brethren whom she had slaughtered in the past, with all due cause.

”You talk way too much.”

From behind him, she would try and flick at his back. Given how physically weak she was, even the strongest attempt at a flick should have done no more than to make him aware of it. She wasn’t trying to hurt him by doing so. Otherwise, she had better more suitable methods of accomplishing that had she wanted it. In essence, it was her way of saying sorry. Yet again, it would be in his interest not to push his luck. It was already beyond her to act as she did, and there was no need to press for an apology lest she changed her mind rather quickly.

To put things into perspective, the circumstances did not indicate Sofia liked the Hollow. They didn’t even show a glimpse of her having any form of trust in him. The lapsing doubt of their encounter had simply been enough to delay any form of killing until and if he ever showed the slightest hint of being like the rest of his kind. Regardless, still behind him, the much smaller figure of the musical prodigy would walk out a couple feet away from him.

“Surely you have a name.”

As she spoke, the seele would be tucked back into its original place. A semi frank smile would be shown to the beast. The notion of being kind to a Hollow was unheard of as far as Sofia’s behavior was concerned. Still, the idea that there could be Hollows like him was intriguing. Then again, the two had met just short moments before, so there was plenty of time for the prodigy to find fault in her assumption, and in the being she had come to act kindly upon.

“I’m Sofia.”

"Isn't the point of conversation to talk? I get that you want your questions answered, but that doesn't mean we have to be so dispassionate about it."

Yaksha reached a hand out, running it over his alabaster shell; it was a slow, ruminative motion, almost with the sense of ritual as he hummed softly to himself. The wounds were already knitting themselves closed, turning into nothing more than a faint discoloration on his shell. He sighed just a bit, rolling his eyes a little bit, whispering to himself over and over. It was hard to make out the exact words, but there was an almost ritualistic sense to it; the cadence and prosody were unchanging, as he spoke to himself for a few long moments.

He finally turned towards Sofia, his eyes softening, warming up. He tilted his head to the side, staring at her for a few moments, running a hand over his face. It almost looked like he was grooming himself at first, as he stroked and preened over his chitinous face, chuckling ever so slightly. It was a nice chuckle, a soft and warm thing that seemed to invite Sofia to join along.

"Thank you, Sofia. I was almost in despair over the current state of etiquette amongst mortals. Asking for someone else's name without giving your own was just...something so unexpected for me. I had to work very hard to remind myself what the appropriate response to such a faux pas was. But now, we can move on!"

Yaksha swept a hand across his chest, bowing deeply, graciously. The back of his neck was perfectly exposed, his voice was perfectly polite, and there was a sense of insouciant glee there as he spoke.

"Please allow me to introduce myself; I'm a man of wealth and taste. Yaksha Dokuja, at your service."

”At some point, words lose meaning. Word of advice. Treat words with care, because misuse or overuse can devalue them to point where they’re no longer meaningful.”

She had her reasons for thinking as she did. Sure he came of as elegant, smart, and educated even if he was still a Hollow. But her words would ring true nonetheless. Despite her years and her seeming lack of experience, Sofia was known for being and behaving as much older than she seemed. Not only were her skills on par with people who far exceeded her life in terms of centuries, but she was able to understand concepts of the mind that should have simply eluded someone her age. For the most part, people who were truly listened to were so because they had important things to say. Whenever they spoke, people stopped, and listen. However, the more one talked, the more one babbled, and the farther one went from the intended point, the more those around them would get lost in the words and abandon hope of understanding. In essence, the words would lose the inherent value and authority they commanded over the people that once listened.

Sofia was of the mentality that words, just like actions, carried a lot of weight. As such, she limited what she said and what she did, only to truly important and necessary things. It saved trouble, it saved the time of going around aimlessly in circles. When she needed to make a point, she said it. Regardless of whether people liked it or not, she said what she needed to say when she wanted, and she remained quiet all throughout if she deemed it necessary. However, it was unlike her to either monologue, or dabble on about unnecessary things that mattered only to her.

”Amused to meet you.”

She couldn’t quite say it was a pleasure, or that she was happy. Despite his oddly different behavior, he was a Hollow, and it would take a lot more than being surprised or confused to accept his kind for more than what she had been taught for years. Still, she had to admit he had manners. His name didn’t ring a bell, but it did remind her of her family. It sounded like royalty, or at least like wealth. And being familiar with the customs and the code of conduct that kind of life presented, she was in awe but amused at how well he behaved.

”I have to ask. Why are you here?”

A Hollow that behaved so differently, that did things so differently than his peers surely had intents that were equally different than the rest. They didn’t seem to be ill intent, and that was among the most puzzling reasons she had halted her violent meeting. Still, she needed to figure out why he was there, and what he sought if she was to make a better reception of the odd individual she had met.

"Words always have meaning, Sofia. Words are meaning. Without communicating, we're little more than animals. It's through sharing our thoughts freely and wholesomely that we become who others see us as."

The hollow dipped his head slowly in acknowledgement, his movements exuding a sense of easy, negligent grace; each act was perfectly calculated, likely rehearsed in front of a mirror until it was gotten just perfect. And the tone in his voice, that negligent calm command...it was something that could only come from countless conversations, and an entirely well-founded sense of self-confidence. This hollow exuded charm and civility the way a fire exuded heat; in slow, rolling waves, that seemed to simply fill the area around him, and change it.

He glanced up at Sofia, his expression curious, almost pensive. It looked like he was completely lost in thought, as a matter of fact; his claws twiddled over one another, his eyes wide and unseeing as he stared off into space, seemingly lost in some world of his own devising. His mind was formulating one of a million responses, this was true...but beyond that, he was simply trying to absorb as many of the sensory stimuli around him, to commit them to memory and remind himself, in those dark moments where he had no one for company but the memories of his countless mistakes, that there was something beautiful left of this world. That there would be no good result from retreating away from it.

"I died when the Wonders of the World were in their infancies. When I was alive, the greatest invention we had was aqueducts. You've all come so very far since then. They say those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and...I daresay I'm as close to history as any one man could ever reasonably claim to be. I was there for the Crucifixion, for the Crusades, for the countless wars man has partaken in. And I simply want to help mankind learn."

”I simply don’t agree, but you’re entitled to your own view.”

She had her own reasons, but she didn’t see a need to go into detail. Beyond that, she just lacked the will or intention to do so. His following response was seen a fair amount better however. Even if his own specific goals and wants differed from hers, she could find some common ground in the basis of the concepts of his views.

”I suppose we agree on something. Those who fail to learn, and doomed to repeat the mistakes sooner or later in some fashion or another.”

Though he shouldn’t have any means to know exactly what she was referring to, she was thinking of the Quincy. In her mind Yhwach had been a great man, with some great ideals as well as some that were quite nefarious. It was his delivery and the lack of organization he possessed, along with less desirable traits that eventually led to his own downfall. Throughout history the Quincy tried to keep coming back, only to fail every time and inch ever closer to extinction. As it stood, they were among the rarest of the spiritual races, and on the brink of extinction once again. To survive, to triumph, and move forward where the countless Quincy in the past had failed, they would need to learn from their mistakes. That was one of the most important roles of Sofia within the organization. She had the drive, the will, and the orderly conduct to allow them to progress, seemingly unopposed.

”You wanna help them learn. What? That not all Hollows are evil? Is that it? You’re gonna need a better disguise and more than good intentions. To be honest, I don’t really trust you yet, but I can guarantee there are plenty of people with shorter tempers than me, and with more of an intent and desire to kill for the sheer pleasure of it, regardless of your motives.”
