OPHELIA LESTAT

Song: Life is Beautiful - Artist: ??? - Words: 824

As the clear night sky shone down upon Ophelia, she could feel a particular rush of adrenaline with each movement she made. It was rather intoxicating, almost entrancing in a way, but she couldn't let herself get too involved. It always helped to keep a conscious mind in this situation, for if she got too... excited, she could end up finding herself waking up in the middle of an alleyway again. That wouldn't be good. Especially when she still had to finish her chores at home. Being a maid was stressful, time-consuming work, but it paid off to be able to see her daughter every day. Even if the girl didn't know she was her mother. Oh how complicated that whole situation was, but that was exactly what Ophelia was trying to fix right now. Having her old body back would mean that her daughter would finally recognize her as her mother again. That was exciting.

But that didn't mean getting to that point wouldn't take any work. Oh no, no, no. She had so many organs to harvest still. She wanted to make sure her insides were prettier than the northern lights. While intestines didn't quite glow like that, Ophelia found it incredibly nice to have as colorful of insides as she could. It made her feel a lot happier to know her heart was a deep, healthy red instead of a dark, dull one. Oh and stealing the liver of an alcoholic wasn't exactly on the forefront of her mind (to put it as lightly as she could) but that wasn't exactly as important when she already stole the livers of two nice women earlier that day. Then again that wasn't really important.

As she stabbed her hand clean through the corpse of this man's chest, she took a good long moment to relish the feeling of a dying organism slowly ceasing to pump blood around her right hand. A shiver ran down her spine as she felt the last of the energy left in this deceased human's body vanish and another jolted through her body as she listened to the sound of her tearing out this man's heart. She could feel the heat of arousal burning through her core right now. Except there was none because she wasn't that weird. Who the hell gets aroused whenever they kill anyone anyways? Freaks.

That being said though, the woman let out a sigh as she found out that this particular heart wasn't exactly as pure as she would have liked it to be. It was perfectly healthy, nothing wrong with it as she inspected it, but it seemed that it was not quite as cleanly colored as she would like, even after she cleaned off some of the blood with her maid's skirt. Ophelia only shook her head and tossed the heart over her shoulder in dismay before dismounting the corpse she was straddling and brushed the dirt off her skirt with her clean hand. The blood was fine, but the dirt wasn't because she wasn't quite sure of how long ago it got on her. With a snap of her fingers, the blood on her hand and dress, as well as the heart all lifted off of the ground and slowly flowed their way back into the man's body seemingly via a telekinetic force. Except Ophelia's powers weren't that boring. What really happened is that all events that happened to the man's body within the past minute was completely and utterly reversed. Except his death. Ophelia wasn't a miracle worker.

To any passerby, it would seem the man died of unknown causes. It was just a completely clean, undisturbed corpse now. It helped that any of Ophelia's spiritual energies attached to the man were also gone now, as they were reversed as well. However, due to the fact that Ophelia couldn't affect her actual physical self directly, the energy was not returned to her. Instead it simply vanished, leaving absolutely no trace of her presence here, just like the last two corpses before. Well, except one of them. She left her energy on one corpse that would fade away in an hour just to see if someone had the balls to come find her. That would end poorly for them, surely. Or at the very least, Ophelia would just teleport back to the other side of the planet freely so as to keep herself from getting caught up in too much trouble. But for now, the little redheaded maid would find herself wandering the streets of this American city once more. She needed to find a heart that really shined to her. Well, not literally as she already established but the point was that she was going to go murder someone and steal their god damned heart and it BETTER not be fucking ugly. Or else...

Or else she'd go home and go the hell to sleep frustrated. Again. For like the seventh night in a row.

Yaksha, The Anthropophagus

Yaksha was on the trail. His tongue flickered back and forth constantly, and he could be heard idly humming to himself as he hopped from rooftop to rooftop, his eyes closed, his feet tracing the pathways of the skyline almost perfectly. His brain had very nearly imprinted the blueprints of this spot into his head, and he had to open his eyes perhaps once every four or five leaps, just to confirm nothing had changed since the last glance. He narrowly missed several birds that had altered their course just a touch too drastically, and trod on a rat at one point, spewing the contents of its intestines onto the faint pebbles of the roof it had been on. Not some residential place, then; those stones were almost always for the roofs of businesses, places where people came and went regularly.

He couldn't track her by the reaitsu, that was for certain; there was something unfathomably alien about the energy clinging to that corpse. Yaksha almost could've persuaded himself this was another sort of alien, that there was something from a land he had never entered, a place he could barely even fathom even with his countless lifetimes of experience. And why not, honestly? There were zombies running through the streets of Chicago, man had colonized other planets, and everything had gone completely insane when Yaksha wasn't looking. What was to stop the world from being overcome with alien ghosts?

Occam's Razor; it was more likely this was some new kind of mortal, something Yaksha hadn't interacted with yet. No creature able to cover its tracks and its presence so effectively could've made it onto this planet. Especially not with the incredible leaps and bounds in surveillance the mortals had made. No, whatever this was, it was something that had modified an otherwise unremarkable person. And that meant that there could be no eldritch hand in this matter. None overt, at the very least.

And if he was wrong? Well, the humans would handle it in short order, no doubt.

He continued to hop from spot to spot, periodically even stopping in thin air, just to survey the nearby area. It had taken him the better part of an hour, even moving at the highest speeds he could, but he had found several more suspect deaths. This one, a homeless man, slumped over; vomit caked his mouth and blood ringed his nostrils. Probably not one of his target's, then. The others had been...clean. Almost eerily so. As if their hearts had simply stopped without warning, without explanation.

He took back to the sky, and heard it almost immediately; a suspiciously organic sound, something that was almost unsettling to hear. It sounded like someone going rummaging through a swamp, or some other place that was just slightly too wet, too flooded. And the sounds of breathing, of exertion, told him the other details all too well; someone was taking apart a body. In the open, so boldly?

There weren't many explanations for that. Not even a spirit being could hope to hide behind the veil of ignorance any longer. No, this was something else. Something stranger. Yaksha approached slowly, carefully, watching the events unfold carefully. Almost curiously. His head rested in his palms, chin jutting out slightly as he saw her withdraw an organ from within, as if pulling a diamond out from a pan full of muddy water. And then, with a faint sound of dismissal, she threw it aside. Yaksha rose a brow slightly; this wasn't quite right. No, this body was far too messy. These methods didn't fit his target. Could it be two entities, working in-

ah.

Yaksha couldn't quite disguise a gasp of delighted surprise as he watched the events unfold. Or rather...fold. Refold. Defold. It would take Yaksha quite some time to determine the appropriate phrasing for what happened when something done was undone. The heart rose back into the air, hovering in place as if being held by a pair of invisible hands, then slid back into the chest cavity. There were various more soft, wet sounds; to Yaksha's trained ears, he couldn't be certain, but what were the chances these sounds were just the reverse of what had been happening a moment ago? He would've bet a pretty tidy sum on it.

And then, just like that, the body was unmarred. The man's eyes didn't flutter open, his heart didn't begin beating, his facial features didn't change, save to flatten out into a look of supreme boredom. Not true resurrection, then. Yaksha mused in silence, his brain working at incredible, almost whiplash-inducing speeds, as he finally spoke. They were just two words, ever so soft. They drifted over from the rooftops, barely more than a breath on the wind by the time it reached Ophelia's ears.

"I see."

OPHELIA LESTAT

Song: Life is Beautiful - Artist: ??? - Words: 824

As Ophelia prepared to go back to wandering the streets of this not-so-quaint little city, she felt a peculiar little presence approaching her vicinity. Maybe this would be what she was looking for? Possibly. Maybe. If she got lucky that is. If not, maybe she didn't have to kill this one. Up until this point she had only been doing that out of fun rather than necessity. The poor souls who's lives had been cut short... didn't really matter to Ophelia at all. Her attempts at building another body for her to take over probably weren't going to end up being completed. Maybe it might be a little close like last time, but she always had a hard time finding her head. Literally. As in the actual head from her old body. That thing was always somewhere different every single time.

Well, she might as well have had some fun. And this person or thing, as Ophelia didn't like to discriminate, may or may not provide that for her. That would be wonderful. Or wonderfully boring. Oh how fun random chance was. It was the only thing giving the maid any sort of enjoyment in life. Not. It was so uninteresting. Why couldn't she just have the fun to begin with and not have to go through life not knowing when something was or wasn't worth her time. She was a woman with very little free time on her hands.

Well, at least she wouldn't have to wait for this presence to get any closer. As she was spacing out, it had moved up behind her and started to watch as she reversed all that she had done to that poor corpse earlier. Hopefully he, she, or whatever it preferred to be called enjoyed that little show. The woman turned around shortly afterwards and looked straight in the direction of this presence that she had been feeling for the past few minutes. It seemed to be a strange little lizard creature watching her out of mostly curiosity than anything else. That was fine. Ophelia didn't mind giving others a little show of power every now and again. After a little thought, the woman decided to act surprised, although she was very unenthusiastic about it. If the creauture didn't know that she was faking it, she would be very surprised.

"Oh!" the redhead said with very poor acting. "I didn't realize you were there!"

Her smile of clearly fake innocence never left her face. From the moment she slaughtered that man, to right now when she was doing her 'best' to act surprised, it had always been there. Judging from how it watched more out of wonder than to judge her ability and level of danger, she figured he wasn't here to fight. Or so she hoped. Maybe, maybe not. She just stood here wondering what the thing would do next.

"I hope you don't mind the 'mess' I made. I did the locals a favor and cleaned most of it up for them. It's not too rude to let them take care of the rest, right?" the little maid asked the reptilian, hoping he at least had a sense of humor. Then again if he was the heroic type she was thinking of earlier, that would merely provoke him. Yet still, provoking this thing was partially what she wanted, if only to have another poor sap to toy with before she offed him. Just like the rest of her kills tonight.

But it wasn't that bad because she was still cleaning up after her mess. Mostly.

Right?
