I. Basic Information

» Name: Hiroshige Adachi (足立 広重 Adachi Hiroshige)
» Age: 23
» Gender: Male

» Appearance Image:

» Appearance Written: When someone things "generic protagonist," a picture of Hiroshige will probably come up. He's nothing special. He has no special hair color, eye color, or distinctive features that make him really stand out. He has scars along his neck and left arm, but that is about it. He stands about 5'11 and his body type is average, if more athletic than average. He's the type of man who could sit in the same place for hours and never be described the same way twice. In short, Hiroshige is not someone who would ever stand out in a crowd.

II. Personality

» Personality: Hiroshige is the type of person who would sacrifice himself to save someone else. He's not the type to sacrifice anything for a lofty goal or the "greater good." No, the only sacrifices he can make are those for the people he can directly assist. Hiroshige is a man of pure, unfettered helpfulness. He's the type to give you the shirt off of his back if he thinks it'll truly help. He has the alignment of "Good" without any other modifiers.

Hiroshige helps without prompting most of the time, and he never complains about helping someone out. When asked why, he simply replies "Why not? We stick together to survive, right?" He's nice nearly to the point of naïveté, though he clearly knows when something isn't right. Hiroshige is the type of person who would be more disappointed in someone who tricked him rather than being angry. He wants to see more people sticking together, as that is something he feels as though the world has strayed from. It has turned to "us vs. them" across the globe when there isn't a "them" most of the time. Hiroshige would rather turn conflicts into "me vs. you" over anything, as conflict is usually far more cleanly resolved—for better or for worse—when in that situation.

Hiroshige is blunt and does not like hiding something from another. Of course, he has tact—he'd say "You are pretty" rather than "you give me an erection." He tries to be nice about his wordings, but that can cause a whole other set of problems. If he is too nice, then it creates the risk of them misunderstanding him. He tries to keep his balance although it is quite hard to do so. Such balance ends up skewing too far one way for Hiroshige's taste.

III. History

» History: Hiroshige is one of the many souls whose memory of his life alive is fragmented at best. He lived in Japan; that much is for sure. Where exactly he lived is something he doesn’t recall. He remembers it being isolated. He remembers the trees around him being enough to block out the sun at times. He remembers the slopes he fell down, but not where those slopes could be. He’s looked at topographical maps and hasn’t been able to pick out anything that seemed familiar. Hiroshige tends to avoid those types of questions anyway.

Hiroshige was raised in a small community. It wasn’t large enough to call it a town, but there were enough people that they could marry and not worry about inbreeding. His mother and father were normal people for this community. His mother gathered herbs and berries while his father was a carpenter. Hiroshige was their only child, something that was fairly common. Few families had more than one due to the scarcity of supplies. They did not grow crops, but instead hunted the animals which lived there. Metal was only used for tools, not weapons or building materials. The iron they mined was forged into primitive axes, saws, and chisels. Rarely did they need anything more. The rest of the tools could be made with wood or stone with no problem. Some even used stone-headed axes still.

Hiroshige doesn’t remember much about his childhood except when it came to his first hunt. Every man was taught how to hunt—to be a fill-in for someone who was sick or injured. Some men were dedicated to the hunt. They were the ones that provided food for most of the community. No matter the quarry, the hunters went out unarmed. This fascinated the young Hiroshige who saw his community using tools for most everything else. Hiroshige was shown the ways of how to hunt on a deer. That was the plan, at least. Instead, a wild bear (something that was rare even in these parts) roared and charged. Hiroshige tried to run, but someone stopped him. His father killed the bear with two well-placed strikes. The reason this community had thrived for so long was their only saving grace—the art of killing a beast.

Hiroshige learned this quickly. He was torn away from other studies just to learn this one art. It was never good on someone with the same humanoid shape. It just didn’t work. He was taught anatomy as well. Not human, but animal. He gained an innate knowledge of how most animals worked—even small fish. He could catch and kill a fish with his bare hands as easy as others could with a pole or a net. It was a skill meant for killing, or so he thought. When he brought up that thought with his father, his father frowned. They went out into the woods and spoke.

The conversation is something that stuck with Hiroshige. It spoke to him down to a fundamental level. His father explained that the art they performed was one of connecting with life. They would not take a life if it weren’t by their own hands. Doing so was wrong, as it didn’t give them the feeling of having done so. It was not an act solely for killing. They did not kill for killing’s sake. They killed for survival. They inherited the life of one beast to give to others. They protected those who were under threat from animals who did not fear humans. That was the strength of the art. Hiroshige understood what it meant at that point. He swore his life to upholding the ideals of that art, something his father thought was a good sign for this young boy.

Hiroshige died upholding those ideals. A strange young girl had ended up in the mountains, lost and afraid. She had been in a car accident and was following a stream. It was sound theory, except she had bad luck as to which stream she was following. The only settlement was that of Hiroshige’s. He found her surrounded by wolves. Even Hiroshige thought wolves were extinct here. They may have just been wild dogs, but he hadn’t encountered any that looked like this. As the wolves tried to pounce, Hiroshige threw himself in their path. He sustained fatal wounds, but he did fight off each one. The girl sustained no injuries. He smiled at her and offered his non-broken hand. Hiroshige died after reaching his home.

He awoke in a room of white stone. In that room, someone spoke to him. He never could see the source of the voice. “You were one who was genuinely good in life. It’s something I rarely see. Good job.” It was a voice like rumbling thunder in the distance. Hiroshige woke again, this time in a room of wood. A lady started, thinking he was still unconscious. She explained that he was found in the Rukongai passed out. It was a miracle she found him before he was carted away like a dead body. Hiroshige nodded and thanked the woman before offering his assistance to re-pay her. She looked at him like he was crazy. He simply said “You helped me without prompting. I feel like I should do the same. So what do you need?”

IV. Skills

  • Name: Self-Sacrifice
    Rank:EX
Description: The skill of using oneself to save others. At the rank of EX it is said to be "beyond the scope of simple heroism" and is no longer an action that requires conscious thought. It is more of an instinct, embedded into the soul. For Hiroshige, it means he instinctively knows when someone is in trouble near him and will do his best to help, even if it harms him in the process.

  • Name:Fuekiryūkō-ryū
    Rank: A-
Description: An almost-lost hand-to-hand style found only in the mountains of Japan. Its roots date back to the age of beasts. It is not designed to be used on humans, as it was from a time when humans did not have the numbers to fight amongst themselves and had to focus their efforts on the beasts that plagued them. It uses an opponent's larger form and reach to the advantage of the human. While Hiroshige is a master of this one style, he lacks in any other style and his capabilities against other humans is heavily limited.

  • Name: Mountain Man
    Rank: EX
Description: The skill of being a hermit and being able to survive off of the land. As someone who came from the depths of Japan's mountains, Hiroshige has innate knowledge about what it means to live away from society. He is perhaps the best equipped to survive if all technology was to stop working. With the skill at this rank, Hiroshige is capable of surviving on any mountain.

  • Name: Carpentry
    Rank: B+
Description: The skill of making structures from wood. This covers anything from a house to furniture. Hiroshige’s skill is very traditional—using nails and such are not something he is accustomed to. He is great with interlocking joints that hold together as well as, if not better than, nails.

V. Keishō (継承; lit. Inheritance)

Keishō is one of two abilities Hiroshige's soul can attain at this time. Other abilities forced upon him just seem to slide off of his soul like oil on water. It might stick for a handful of posts, but none stick currently. That's not saying he can't be affected by other abilities, but he cannot be given other abilities. His ability, Keishō, is that of inheriting the world around him—feeding on that himself. He is not absorbing ambient Reishi like a Quincy. That is too specific for Keishō, so the comparison cannot be made. Keishō's applications can usually only be done via touch, unless otherwise specified.

Keishō has a variety of applications, although Hiroshige has only learned of three. The first one that Hiroshige uses is that of "Inheriting the Pain." With this, he can take a wound from someone else and simply take it himself. He can take a person's broken arm and "Inherit" the injury, breaking his arm while theirs would heal within a post. The wound will affect them as if it had hit him. Thus any poison from the wound would be transferred to him as well.

Keishō's second application is that of "Inheriting the Momentum." This is the epitome of "rolling with the punch." When he Inherits the momentum of something, the other object loses all momentum and his body, from the point of contact, gains that momentum. This means he could stop a bullet with his fist, but the first would then have the momentum the bullet did. This would probably rip off his hand at the most and send him hurdling in the direction the bullet was traveling at the least.

The third application of Keishō is that of "Inheriting the Energy." This is the most dangerous application of Keishō. He can Inherit some ambient energy like a Quincy could, but there is a limit. It is like trying to fill a glass with only a drizzle of rain. It can work, but it takes a long time. However, with contact of pure energy—that within Kidou, Cero, etc.—he is able to hasten the process. In this case, it'd be like filling the glass with anything from a steady spigot stream to a firehose. It's entirely possible Keishō can overwhelm his body with too much energy. The energy he gains from this is used to fuel his second ability.

V. Setsuzoku (接続; lit. Connection)

Whereas Keishō is taking from the world and giving it to him, Setsuzoku is connecting Hiroshige to the world and giving back. Setsuzoku works by taking the energy from Inheriting the Energy and forming a tether between Hiroshige and some part of the world around him. He currently cannot use Setsuzoku with another living creature, but inanimate objects are A-OK.

Setsuzoku allows him to use the different applications of Keishō to alter how he interacts with the world. For example, Setsuzoku would allow for Hiroshige to bind himself to different points of the ground and affect his momentum towards the ground. This would allow him to effectively "fly," but instead he is moreso just attaching a string to a point and pulling himself to the point or having the point push him away. Another application of Setsuzoku that Hiroshige knows how to do is using a modified version of the previous example. In it, he instead affects how friction with the object he is tethered to will affect him. Thus he can effectively slide along streets as if they were made of ice.

However, Setsuzoku requires an immense amount of energy to properly use currently. Hiroshige's two abilities may be potent but he does not know the proper way to use them efficiently. When Hiroshige has absorbed enough energy to use Setsuzoku, parts of him begin to glow. His skin gains a faint outline of blueish like while his eyes turn a bright blue not unlike the quite-annoying LED headlights on modern cars.
