A short stay in Spain [Airi, Mirja] XIBN0EI

Airi

Artist: Kevin MacLeod - Song: Laid Back Guitars - Word Count: 628

Airi looked around in wonder as she made her way down the ancient cobbled street she'd been dropped off on. She just caught the taxi pulling away in the corner of her eye before it sped around the corner and out of view, leaving her to her own devices. Spain was like nothing she'd ever seen before, and she couldn't help but walk at a slow pace as she admired all of the old buildings she passed by. There was something different about these types of buildings. They had so much more character than the bland, drab skyscrapers she'd become accustomed to. Of course with the passing of time some modern building had been built here as well, but they didn't catch Airi's attention the same way. It made the whole place seem alive, and Airi found herself smiling as she continued to wander aimlessly, letting her hand scrape against the stone wall of the building she was currently walking past.

She'd left home months ago, but in that time she'd made no progress towards accomplishing her goal, the very reason she'd left in the first place. This had been eating at Airi recently, but with the change of pace and scenery she was able to relax for a while. She'd build up the courage to approach the vanguard after her time in Spain. She could feel it. She'd always been a brave girl, but she was so invested in joining the vanguard she truly didn't know what she would do if she were to be turned away. As she continued to wander all traces of those negative thoughts vanished from her mind, and Airi began to look around, unsure of where her feet had taken her.

As she did so, Airi found that the area she was in now was much more populated than the street she'd been dropped off on. She was standing at the end of a different road at the moment, studying the plaza that sprawled out in front of her. People filled the center, chatting and generally having a good time. To her left Airi could see several small cafes and restaurants, as well as a few clothing shops. To the right were slightly more upscale stores selling a variety of jewelry and other precious things. Some of the people she saw seemed to be simply making their way through the plaza, and they moved much faster than the others. On the opposite side of the plaza though was the thing that had really caught her eye. A large stone building loomed over the entirety of the plaza, spired towers adorning both sides. The entrance was a gargantuan pointed arch whose equally sized double doors were currently flung wide open, and Airi didn't think she could resist taking a look inside. She wasn't quite sure how she'd gotten here, but it didn't matter much. She'd had no idea where she'd been in the first place, so it wasn't like she could get any more lost.

Taking her first steps into the plaza Airi began making her way towards the building that had caught her interest. She had a bit of a harder time than she'd imagined, as the crowd didn't seem to want to let her by. In the end she just had to be more assertive though, and once she was moving it became easier. It didn't take her long to reach the building, but she didn't enter yet. Instead she stood frozen in place, looking up at the towers that rose far above her head. For some reason she felt hesitant now that she was so close.

Mirja was rolling along the capital of Spain, picking up the stuff that she couldn't get in the small country shops that surrounded her home proper. It was pretty well filled, and she had to do some careful manuvering with her chair, but right now she had nothing in front of her, so she just thought on what she needed. Elixiers required some pretty out of the way stuff, so she'd need to go get them later, but also general food that a big place like this had in abundence. Shopping used to be so easy when she could move at mach 10.

'There's someone in front of you' Hvit said, just as Mirja crashed into the dark-haired girl. Her shopping going everywhere, in a cluttered mess.
'Couldn't you have said that earlier?!' Mirja asked, before looking up at the woman. 'ok, we can do this. Say something flirty, like I was stunned by your beauty, my dear. That should work'

"S...sorry, Miss. My brain was elsewhere..." Mirja said, in a soft tone of voice, her hair draping over part of her face and a soft blush filling her cheeks as she looked up at the woman from her wheelchair.

'Brain?! That isn't flirting!'

"Where you hurt, Miss? My chair can be rather unyielding at times..."

'Brain, what are you doing?! Brain, Stop!'

The cute, abashed look on Mirja's face did not betray the mental discord she was having in the slightest. She just looked like an innocent, poorly crippled girl that had a string of bad luck. With her pure white hair, twitching wolf ears, swishing tail and disturbing silver irises and silver pupils, she was certainly a unique thing to have a string of bad luck.

Airi

Airi was suddenly and painfully snapped out of her stupor as something hard rammed into her leg with enough force to move her several inches, she thankfully kept her balance though. She heard multiple items clatter across the stone as she tore her gaze from the towers and instead looked to her right, towards whatever had bumped into her. It took her a moment to register the fact that she'd been bumped into by a woman with wolf ears and a tail who was stuck in a wheelchair. Not a situation she'd expected to find herself in today.

Despite her shock Airi did her best to compose herself, gave the woman a smile, and apologized.

"No, no I'm sorry. I shouldn't be standing here in the way when people are trying to get by, this is my fault. Here, let me help you with your things."

Airi bent down and collected everything she could see that could possibly have come from this womans bags, then returned them.

"And thanks for asking, but I'll be fine. Just a small bruise. It'll remind me to pay better attention."

She laughed a bit as she said this last sentence, her eyes twinkling slightly. She found herself in a very bubbly mood today, and wouldn't let something as slight as being bumped in to dampen it. Perhaps this encounter was fate, she'd needed a shove, and that's was exactly what she'd gotten. It was most likely just a coincidence though. Regardless, now that the woman was here Airi wondered if she could be of help.

"Umm, hey, do you know what this building is? I noticed it from across the plaza and couldn't keep myself from getting closer, but I got a strange feeling once I got here. Now I'm not sure if I should go inside or not... My name's Airi by the way... nice to meet you."

Airi felt somewhat embarrassed asking a stranger for help of any kind, she'd become used to relying on herself over the past few months, and even before she'd left home she was fairly self-reliant. It also felt a bit awkward carrying the interaction beyond what was required, but she pushed through that feeling and made herself speak, doing her best to show off her warm personality. After all what was the point of coming to Spain to be a shut-in? On the plane ride over she'd even thought it would be nice if she could make a few friends during her stay.

Ignoring all protect from her brain, Mirja blushed deeply and looked up at the lovely woman who was so friendly, and even helped her with her shopping that had gone everywhere in the collision. She took the blame, saying she shouldn't be standing in the way of people. Mirja's heart was thumping heavily, and her cheeks were ablaze. Could there really be such friendly, polite people in the world? It almost beggared believe to see this woman in front of her. And she didn't get more than a bruise, so Mirja wouldn't have to help out with some awesome herbs to cover over the cut and expedite it's recovery.

"Th...thank, you....Miss. You are, very nice" Mirja muttered, her voice soft and shy as she buried her face in a head of hair. She did look up after the woman asked what this place once, and through one eye that was not covered with hair - one beautiful silver eye - she gave a soft, timid smile. "This...is centro de la ciudad. Basically the center of town. There are a lot of shops in there to buy a lot of different things, and it's a good way to lose all your money" Mirja tied her bag together so it wouldn't lose the contents again, and sat up, slightly more in control of the situation.

"If you don't know if you want to go in or not, you must not have anything specific to do in there. So why don't you let me take you to a cafe and get you something to drink? It's always good to have a friend in a strange new place. And ahh, I'm Mirja Eeola, Miss. It is lovely to meet you" Mirja smiled. Most members of the Vanguard would know the Wolf as the sponsor and assistant of the Veðrfölnir Mechs, which gave Vanguard high-tech aerial support.

Airi couldn't help but notice the blush that filled the other woman's cheeks as she replied. Maybe she was a bit shy? Nevertheless she seemed nice and offered her thanks for the help so Airi took a liking to her from the start. Airi got along with most people she met though, so that was nothing new.

"Don't worry about it, I'm sure anyone would do the same."

Airi often said things that displayed her somewhat naive view of the world. She'd led a rather sheltered life up until this point, she was trained well, but she hadn't had much interaction with others so she knew little of the nature of people. She assumed everyone had the best intentions most of the time. So far, she hadn't seen the error of her ways. When she heard what was inside the building Airi frowned slightly.

"Oh... I thought it would be something more exciting. I guess I won't go in then. "

Airi found that it was her turn to blush now as the woman asked if she'd like to accompany her to a cafe. She wasn't usually one to get flustered but the whole atmosphere of the conversation, as well as the fact that she was in a strange new place was influencing her slightly. She recomposed herself quickly however, and began to nod, her smile returning.

"Mmhm, I'd love that. Do you know of anywhere nice nearby? I've heard the coffee in Spain is really good. Maybe we can go somewhere with food though? I haven't eaten since before the plane ride and I'm starving."

Airi hadn't been paying it much mind previously, but as soon as the notion of going somewhere that could have food came up her body began to make her more aware of how hungry she'd grown since the last time she'd been able to eat. That had been a small and unsatisfying meal from a cheap restaurant on her way to the airport. She would have gone somewhere nicer, but she was running low on time and everything else was out of her way.

Airi glanced up at the towers one more time and admired their design. At least she could imagine that there was something interesting going on in there. Turning back to Mirja she smiled and added one last thing.

"You have such a pretty name. I love it."

Mirja smiled to the girl and brushed her hair behind her ear. Sure, things had gone stupid for a while, but she wasn't going to just give up like this without a chance to fight back. And by fight back she meant leave the girl blushing and yet somehow still wanting to be in Mirja's company. That was how she did it until now, and that was how she was going to do it now. So Mirja nodded and looked out towards Spain, trying to think were the best food was. She could just follow her noise...which was a good idea.

"Thank you, Miss. It's Norwegian. Ahh, my home country of Norway is so beautiful every time of year. My heart belongs to that place, eternal. Even if I did sort of blow it up at one point" She trailed off with a giggle and then pushed her chair to start going, onwards towards victory. Or a cafe, whatever came first for her really. "I would take you to my house, and cook for you there. I am much more confident in my own abilities to cook than the abilities to buy food from anywhere, but I thought that might be a bit strange"

Mirja rolled pretty quickly for a girl in a wheelchair. Not through impatience, but due to a desire for speed, a want to go faster and a need to truly accelerate herself beyond the limits of her chair. That was what drove her to become as fast as she was before the chair, and would drive her to get up, off it again.
"Coffee here is very good. They have broad coffee farms, and the climate is amazing for them, so even people without good skill at brewing can make good coffee. So the proficent Baristas are blessed sources of caffeine"

Airi returned the woman's smile as she listened. It seemed they'd both become more comfortable after the initial awkwardness subsided, which meant maybe their conversation would go a bit more smoothly now.

"Norway? That's interesting, I don't think I've ever met anyone from there before. I'm from Japan by the way. This is the first time I've been to another country actually, so I'm really enjoying this trip so far. It's really exciting being somewhere completely new, everything is very different here. I've been lost for a while, but I didn't really mind. I got to do some impromptu sight-seeing, so it was a good time. And I don't know, I don't think it would be that weird, I'd just like to go somewhere close by, anywhere's fine with me really."

Airi wasn't quite sure what she meant about blowing up Norway, but she'd bring it up later. She was also surprised by how fast Mirja could move around in her chair, and had to walk briskly to keep pace. That didn't bother her though, as her stomach was starting to radiate pain every so often. She really needed to find something to eat, and soon. At the same time Mirja's talk of coffee had her craving that as well.

"Oh? You seem to know a lot about it. Coffee has always been one of my favorite drinks, I can't wait to try some."

After a short pause Airi began moving faster as she'd started to fall behind due to becoming distracted. A few moments later she was back at Mirja's side. The wind had started to blow as well, and was causing her hair to whip around more than it would have naturally at this pace.

"Would you mind if I asked how long you've been living here? I was hoping to find someone that could show me around. I don't know if I'd be able to find all of the interesting places I'm sure there are on my own, and I'm only staying for two weeks. Maybe I'm asking for too much though, I do tend to get carried away."
