Rising Action [Shio/Ulv] Empty Rising Action [Shio/Ulv]

It was quickly shaping up to be a very strange year for Shio. He'd gotten himself recommended for mandatory therapy, he'd met and befriended an angel, a literal one, and he had spent the past few months terrified he'd wake up one day to hear people accusing him of any number of horrific things...chief amongst them being hiding his zanpakuto from the world. As if it were some public commodity. As if hewere. He hadn't realized just how much had changed, the day he'd signed on to the Shino'o Academy, but now he truly had to wonder if it was any better than staying in his Rukongai district, and waiting out his sentence.

He didn't even really pay attention to where his feet were taking him, simply strolling through the human world, allowing his sense for reaitsu to detect any interesting anomalies. Almost certainly, he'd be back to the Gotei and preparing a debriefing the moment he did notice anything interesting, but that was better than the alternatives. Either he'd be going rogue, or thrown back into the lion's den; in either case, there was no way he could survive a fourth iteration of the same song and dance. He had already accumulated too many scars, already found it too hard to move past the screaming instincts in his head. Then again, wasn't that why he was visiting Captain Midori? To better control these instincts?

Hilarious. That they think I'd believe the Gotei would spare the time for a single recruit like that. They just want to make sure I'm not harboring seditious and dangerous thoughts, like Aizen.

Sweetling, you needn't remain loyal to their system to remain loyal to yourself. Perhaps she has ulterior motives...but is it not true you do, as well? Use her, as she uses you. That's what people call 'friendship'. Feed off one one another's smoke, and grow stronger as you do.

Something interesting was indeed happening. A small group of Shinigami contested with what looked to be an Arrancar, and they were not doing well at all. She had wounded most of them and was baring down on the last of them, with a grin that implied she was going to make a mess. Shio could hang back and hope called aid would come quick enough, but this creature was nearly done with it's hunt, and any delay would cost the life of all the Shinigami, not a good thing to have on any record. But then, there was another wrench thrown into the works.

The group currently getting tormented by the Arrancar girl, where all part of the group of people in Shin'o Academy who had shown him the depths of human vindictiveness. It seemed that despite the claims, Mirja had not buried them anywhere, and instead made them take up permanent Earth-posts so that Shio would never have to see them again, and think that they truly had died. Whatever the reason for that mad wolf's actions, this was the result. And that was the conundrum facing Shio right now. Revenge, was in his grasp. Maybe not personally delivered, but he could be sure it was delivered none the less.

All he had to do, was not get involved. And that would be the true, verifiable end of all his tormentors. This cute but clearly unhinged Arrancar would take them apart, probably eat them, and then Garganta out of there before anything resembling Seireitei reprisal could be mustered. The only thing to be questioned was, could he do it. Could Shio turn his back, for whatever reason, knowing that there would be dead bodies and no Arrancar by the time anyone else got here.

It didn't exactly surprise Shio that they were here, or that Mirja had lied to him like that. While he knew a great many things about the Gotei, he knew that the death and disappearance of a few people like that would've attracted -someone's- attention. And it had already been handily proven that her connections with the Stealth division, if ever she'd had any, didn't extend nearly as far as she liked to lead others to believe. He inhaled, watching on in silence as his fellow shinigami all lay there, let low by fate and reality. He inhaled slowly through his nostrils, not making a single unnecessary movement, or a single comment, as he watched this arrancar start bearing down on a comrade.

This is insane. That's a six-on-one, and they're still losing. I remember those six. Why are they lying there so beaten up? They're not nearly that weak. The chances I can handle this arrancar on my own are near zero. I need to retreat, and get help, before she finishes them off.

Look more closely, sweetling. Their wounds are purely on their backs. Not a one of them made a true effort to stand up to this foe. They were strong against you merely because they latched onto the hideous girth of the Gotei, for sustenance. You could no more dispatch them than remove a remora from the shark without provoking its wrath. Their strength is purely illusory...and theirs is an opponent who shows no respect for illusion and misdirection.

Shio's hand tightened around his shikai, his grip so tight that his knuckles were growing whiter and his eyes were bugging out of his head dangerously wide. He bit at his lower lip, clearly lost in thought, as he bowed his head towards the recruits, and then tapped a hand against his hilt.

You speak of these things as simple affairs. They never are. She suffers consequences of a different scope than I do. I still fail to understand why each and every one of them sought to run, without aiming to protect one another. When...they were in the academy. They were willing to suffer any number of wounds for one another's sake.

Do you truly think that, sweetling? You needn't answer. I know the truth. They suffered those wounds for the sake of defeating an enemy. Not a one of them cared for one another as anything beyond a means to an end. Did you think that a luxury unique to the strong? The cowardly and incompetent treat others as tools, as well. Strength has nothing to do with the sort of person you are. Those ones sought to pursue the path of seeming. Like smoke, they disperse, spread far too thin, when faced with a less-sealed environment. This was their choice, sweetling. Nothing you did could've changed that.

What are you saying, Taroba!? That I was wasting my entire life up to now, trying to help these people? Trying to lead by example!?

A good man, grown strong, can do great things. A rotten man, grown strong, can do terrible things. Strength and competence are not personality traits. Nor are they corruptive influences, as many would have you believe. You know well, sweetling, that merely being strong cannot overcome all of life's obstacles. But there are no obstacles here, and now. You needn't apply your strength for any one purpose. You need merely call my name...and be yourself."

Before Shio even realized it, his lips had began the words under his breath, repeating them with the same force of a mantra. He rose one hand as he saw the arrancar preparing to swing, and spoke, in a voice that was all the worse for how quiet it was, as he pointed a finger towards her.

""Carriage of thunder, bridge of a spinning wheel. With light, divide this into six. Bakudo number 61, Rikujōkōrō."

As he spoke, a beam of yellowish light thrust forth from his hand, splitting into multiple segments, and almost immediately slamming into the arrancar's chest at forces great enough to force the air out of her lungs.

"I was told, once. That the weak must be protected from the strong. I'm still not sure if I believe that, but...there are certain things I cannot abide in my sight."

While he was having his merry discussion with himself, the Arrancar girl wasn't stopping her fun. The first man, held up by his Shunhakusho was Cero'd in the face, leaving a shiny skull where his head used to be. And then he was dropped and she went to pick up another, whom she tore the leg off after stretching him out and then discarded him and the leg.
"Huh, come on guys~ You're boring me to death here. The world is so boring since she died. Gimme something to do already. I just want one of you to stand up like a man and take a swing. Is that really so much to ask?" Masiko asked, shaking her head softly as she picked a third Reaper up by his throat and let him dangle.

Whatever she planned to do with him, however, she never got the chance, as a Kido slammed into her and paralysed her. Exerting her Reiatsu did little, the six rods cracked some, but didn't shatter, and so the guy she was holding slowly turned purple, and also wet himself. Because courage was apparently something that nobody had these days. Still, someone was stepping up to the mark, so that was good. Pretty strong kido as well, she took a few seconds to recover from that.

"Yes, I can agree with that one. The weak must be protected from the strong. Because they get bored otherwise, and start culling off all the weaklings, and in their boredom they don't think that a weak person can become strong, given time. And ever since my Wolf died on my, none of you reapers have ever been more than a pass-time for me. So come on, give me your best shot and I'll see where it stands"

"Please shut up. If you want to be entertained, then stop talking about strength and weakness. There's no such thing as strength in this world."

Shio's eyes seemed to lock onto hers, hands drumming against the hilt of his tanto as he spoke, walking closer slowly. He'd already seen the cracks form, and he could feel the pressure of his kido fading already, the way one could feel something slipping from between their fingers. He watched her, drawing out his blade slowly, and swiping it through the air slowly several times; it seemed to leave small smoke contrails behind as it went, leaving a faint hazy sense to the atmosphere. It weaved back and forth two, three times, then stopped entirely, blade aimed straight at her. Shio was still quite visible through the mist, though there was a faint shimmering to his appearance, as if he were underwater.

He inhaled slowly, feet remaining poised below himself, as he gestured towards the surviving shinigami.

"Senkaimon. Go. Request one, find a hell butterfly, pray to the heavens...I don't care. Just get out of here, before this gets too hectic."

"The fuck are you talking about!? She's going to rip our faces off! You can't stop her!"

As these words were spoken, Shio let his gaze slip to the speaker for just a moment, a hideously nauseating wave of killing intent flowing off of him as he slowly reached up with his other hand to grasp the blade of the zanpakuto, letting his leading hand drop to his side. He was now pointing it directly at the shinigami, his voice devoid of malice, or pride, or guilt, or anything approximating human emotion.

"Having an audience won't change anything. You should be seeking reinforcements. All I have to do to win is keep her from escaping, and I can do that no problem. Even if it costs me my life. Now start running."

The shinigami seemed prepared to make some sort of rebuttal, before he finally glanced at Shio, seeming to notice him for the first time...and then his mouth opened, his entire body deflating like a balloon with the air escaping, as he turned away, beginning to trudge away. Already, the smoke Shio had made seemed to be fading, but the smell it had left behind was as strong as ever. It was the crisp, pleasant scent of butterscotch, filling the air with an almost cloying sweetness, as Shio's gaze turned back towards the arrancar.

"Don't ask for my name. Don't give yours. I don't care about any of that. You're here to kill, and I'm here to stop you. I don't need to know anything beyond that. If, at any time you want to kneel and beg for your life...don't. I won't spare you."
