Karakura City

Click…

The apartment door opened slightly. In the crack of the door, an eye emerged. It possessed a shining blue quality, and it was… annoyed.

A shuffling sound emanated from the doorway, and then the door closed. On the other side of it, a young man scrambled, tearing apart a couch, tossing its cushions off. A laptop lay on the coffee table, dust coating the top of its casing, The man's eyes passed right over the underused device as he searched. He was grumbling softly to himself. That stopped when he looked at the top of the couch that was next to the kitchen. "There you are…" His voice was still annoyed… but it also contained a sigh of relief.

Found. His hand gripped around a set of keys, tucking them into his pocket. For a moment, the man paused completely. His gaze had pointed back at the door, the apartment silent. Pictures lined the walls, covered the fridge; pictures of this golden haired man, and others. In some, he was with a brown-haired girl, who did not seem to understand why she should stay still for something like a picture. In others, he was with a blue eyed man, who had the same height as himself. In yet others, he stood with strange creatures. Many of them were taken in this very room, some of them in exotic places, and still others along the backdrop of city lights.

In every single one of them, the young man was smiling.

…Found them. Time to go to work. The straight line remained on his mouth as he opened the door again. The wooden frame swung open completely, and then Len Washi departed from his silent apartment.

* * *

We need to prepare so much… And these people are already pretty vulnerable, at least compared to the city… Len's gaze wandered over the fields outside of Karakura. He wore a black hat, and a black uniform. His golden hair contrasted sharply with his getup. His voice barked out orders, directing people to where they needed to go. Keeping them safe. Maintaining the production of food. That's all good stuff. He nodded to himself, proud of his work.

He was overseeing a bulwark operation within a rural community outside of Karakura City. These people used Karakura Forest to help gather resources, and the food they produced went back into Karakura's metropolitan sprawl. Without food, everything else would come to a halt. Len and those under his direction were keeping busy as they repaired less maintained buildings, making plans and setting up new constructs to get in the way of enemy troops.

At this point in time, Len was inside of a barn. A rather large barn. Beneath his feet, a great bed of hay was strewn out. He was on the edge of the second floor of the barn, directing and managing. After some time, his voice died down, becoming replaced with somber silence. Most of the other personnel had left; Len was working on paperwork at this point, keeping track of all the changes that they had made.

His troops did not really understand why he was doing his work in a smelly barn like that. But… what they could not see outside, and what Len could within the barn… was the barn cat. It had not a care in the world, grooming itself, relaxing and rolling about. Finding dark corners to shade itself in, or laying out in rays of sunshine that were let in from cracks in the barn walls.

It made Len smile. He liked cats, quite a lot. Once upon a time, he had been able to keep a cat. But… she had been quite a special cat. With how hectic things had been in his life, he had not gotten another one. Or maybe he just did not want another.

So Len sat on the edge of the second floor, people milling down below, the cat not caring at all as it mixed among them, seeking out mice and wandering its territory. A large object entered his view; Len could see a bale of hay being brought into the farm by a large machine. He paused with his paperwork, watching, his blue eyes wide. This was something that, as a supervisor, needed his attention.

Danava of Fortune - Sassy

It started as a gentle vibration, quieter than a whisper but not without its impact on the environment. A cup of water left on the kitchen counter, half-full, showed ripples racing across its surface despite the calm and quiet. Empty hangers, strung up in a partially opened closet, wavered ever so slightly and bumped into each other on occasion, despite the seeming absence of impetus. There was something there in the background, distant, but undeniable. And it was not meant to simply idle. The time would pass, and the vibrations would develop into a concerning rumble.

It was like living near train tracks, and one of the freighters was rolling by along the iron rails. The wooden cabinets would rattle, loose doors opening and closing erratically... while one's personal belongings clattered across a forsaken coffee table with no small amount of noise. Perhaps it was an earthquake, and a fearsome one at that. The longer it went on, the worse it got, faster. It was accelerating at a dangerous rate. Was everything about to collapse?! What was a humble little apartment complex in the face of this immaculate force?

And then it all came to a climax, as golden rays of light radiated from the outside in, peering through the cracks underneath and above the door—it was as if the sun had fallen and was just before the entrance of the piddly lodging. If these weren't the end days, they did a real good job of making it seem that way... only to vanish in a disappointing manner. For all that build-up, what resulted was not so dire. A tanned woman with distinctive feline ears, crouching in front of the door with an eager expression on her face.

Her mouth opened to make noise—not the human speech one would expect, but a perfect imitation of the meowing a cat would instead make. For a time, she repeated these calls for attention at the closed door, hoping they reached the man whom lived here; whom she'd come for. There was a certain blonde-haired human she'd known and could never forget, and adored from the bottom of her heart. There was an unbreakable bond between him and her, that could not be broken by distance or time. It was to be their reunion, and she was as excited to see him as she hoped he was to her. Certainly... he'd be opening the door soon enough and they'd embrace...

She blinked, rising to her feet and allowing herself to appear one hundred percent more human. It sure is taking a long time, she thought. Maybe he hadn't heard... or just mistook her for another cat. "Oh Len...?" she inquired of the stubborn door, leaning forward to knock on it. Knock knock. Knock knock. She waited, her expression still barely able to contain her anticipation, but now with a note of confusion. Her tail did twitch in the air rather impatiently. "Leeeeeen? Len. Washi. Yaho...?"

The entire complex shook again as the cat abused her overwhelming power to essentially break into the apartment. Golden rays exploded outwards from Sassy's chocolate rich body, and further expanded onto the environment around her. A trail of these rays raced through the door and invaded the insides, taking the cat with them. To any onlookers, she would seem to disappear from view, as if an invisible curtain had just been pulled around her. While in the apartment, she would be jettisoned from thin air, landing on the couch with a leap of faith.

Her face buried into the scattered cushions, immediately being hit by a nostalgic and welcome scent. With a noise one part surprise and one part pleasantness, she breathed it in. She was almost gasping, desperate for more. "Aaaaaaaaah... Len's scent... It smells..." She stopped suddenly and rose up to sit. She glanced around the room as if expecting to find the man she was looking for. It was empty; not a soul occupying this place... but that was the strange part. If Len wasn't around, then why did his scent smell so... "Fresh?"

There was no doubt he still lived here, and she could tell in more ways than one. Not only by his scent, but the belongings lying around, and just the disorderly state the apartment was in. So by all accounts, she could potentially just wait here at home for him, and he would find her eventually... but that wasn't good enough for the cat. This scent was fresh, which meant he'd been here only moments ago, and then left. That meant only one a thing.

"A hunt!"

Reunion, and a Cat Empty Re: Reunion, and a Cat

Wed Feb 27, 2019 9:21 am

Len stared at the shifting and moving individuals down below. They were handling moving everything alright. Still, something felt... off. The large bale of hay was placed where it needed to be. Len marked another spot on his paper. Down below, the cat rolled to one side on a bale of hay, resting in the sunlight.

He remembered how she had looked, doing the same on the large bed that he had in his apartment. The sight of her laying there at peace, the smile across her face. The rays of sunlight that warmed her skin as she breathed...

Len shook his head as he exhaled. One hand moved to his eye, pawing at the edge of it as if to get something out. Feeling rushed through him, feeling that did not... distract him. It was like drinking water; the body was used to the sensation, and did not pay it any mind.

Whenever the young man saw a cat, he was reminded of his own. Of her hair, of her scent, of her warmth... and of how she thought of him. Another wave of sensation moved through him as he set down the paperwork, rubbing at his eye once again.

These people need me, too. Watching out, helping them... That's what she'd want, isn't it, girl? He thought to himself, a smile finally moving across his face. Even seperated... he could feel the warmth she possessed. How much she cared. The purity in her desire for him to be well and successful. No matter where she was... no matter what she was doing. Of this, Len was thoroughly convinced.

His thoughts turned to this morning, when he had stopped at a tea shop. Len did not drink coffee; it made him too hyper, too burned out feeling when the caffeine died down. So instead, he had taken to drinking tea. The aroma they gave off always managed to help him start his day with a brighter step.

This morning, however, one of the cats had followed him. Old habits died hard for the young man, who fed the stray as he did all of them. The cat had followed him to the tea shop, and then for some time after that. He wondered if it had scented all the delicious scents of the shop, and had gone off trying to find some different game than what Len carried in his pack.

Sitting up, Len began to focus in on his hand. If I could protect these people better... What can I do? I have a moment to myself up here... maybe I try that again? Over the holidays, Len had been able to see his family members. His uncles Colin, Nathan, and Brian. And... his father.

Len's hand closed once again, and then opened. Within his body, a singificant amount of spiritual energy began to move. His Uncle had tried to show him this particular technique... but no matter how often Len tried it, he could not make it work. He just could not get it..

Mrrrow! All at once, Len stopped. He had heard a noise... it was the barn cat. It was looking at him, as if it did not know whether or not to be scared. Len reached his hand outward, offering it to the creature. He would have to get down soon... but for just this moment, he would give this barn cat some attention, rubbing the side of its face as he sighed... trying to work out in his head what exactly he had been doing wrong.

Danava of Fortune - Sassy

First thing was first. If the cat was going to track him down, then of course she needed something to go off of, and that was going to be his scent. She started off by violating the man's room, burglarizing one of his white button-down shirts that looked like it hadn't yet been washed. Tossed into a pile of clothes on the floor, and strong with his smell, it worked perfectly for her purposes. Of course, there was no fighting the instinct to press it into her face and inhale deeply... but she was going to do that either way in the end.

With his scent acquired, the next step would be following his trail. She was no dog, but that wasn't to say her sense of smell wasn't strong. Or perhaps it was just Len's aroma in particular that stood out so much...? Either way, the cat could follow in his footsteps this way, from the moment he stepped out the door. She too left the apartment, making sure to close it behind her before beginning her journey to find the one who raised her proper. With a surge of determination, and Len shirt in hand, she began her hunt with a sprint out into the city.

Reunion, and a Cat Fancy3

"And that's how I got here," the cat explained to an aged woman across the counter, who had soft features but looked otherwise exasperated. Sassy herself was seated at the bar of the establishment, holding a cup with both hands, and ignoring the stares from the rest of the customers that just happened to be here at this hour of the day. It was a tea shop, hole-in-the-wall, solemn and peaceful up until the moment she arrived. For the past few minutes, she'd been sharing her story with the server while enjoying the tea here. "By following his trail, I ended up at this place, and his smell is all over! I'm definitely certain he stopped here."

"...That's nice, miss, but I already told you. I'm gonna have to ask you to leave before I call the police. You're disturbing the customers..."

It did not seem as though the shop owner was all too pleased with Sassy's state of dress. It wasn't very modest in the first place, or even really clothing. It was more like an assortment of strings and jewelry adorning her body, making her out to be a treasure herself. At the least she'd taken the liberty of wearing Len's white shirt, to cover her bountiful upper body, but... it wasn't enough to sate the judge. 'Oh well' she thought, knowing that Len would probably ask her to respect the human laws too if he were here. For his sake, she would leave. And besides, she still had a Len to find at all!

"Very well," she said, trying to contain her pouting, trying to disguise her harrumph. Standing from her seat, she turned away to make her exit. Almost as soon as she took her first step is when she remembered her manners, however, and she was not about to leave without offering payment for services rendered. The tea was in fact delicious, allowing Sassy to approve of her master's taste. As recompense... she reached one hand into Len's shirt and pulled out a sizable golden ingot without warning. She placed it on the bar table with a word of thanks, and then made her way out.

To her confusion, she heard a number of gasps and scrambling behind her while she was leaving, but paid it no mind. After all, Len was an important goal to devote oneself to.

Reunion, and a Cat Empty Re: Reunion, and a Cat

After another moment, Len hopped down from the second floor. He landed next to the bale of hay, smiling as he looked at it. He had not meant to scare the cat. But it was not possible for a normal cat to understand why he would try to form an attack like that. Cats did not worry about such things. But their owners did. A barn cat like this one did not have to worry about many visitors. Len and his crew were an exception.

He really could not escape thinking about her. Maybe it was the lull of activity, and the presence of this cat. He remembered how he had explained to her that she could not simply walk around in any state of dress that she pleased, that there were 'rules' and 'laws' that she needed to follow if she wanted to come with him when he left the house. It had always been pretty obvious she did not understand the deeper reason behind most of these social customs; she had followed them for his sake. Because he had told her to.

He actually chuckled as he remembered the first time he took her out to get food. How much she had pouted when he tried to get her to wear clothes. How confused she had been when he told her she could not go after all the good smells and needed to wait for it to come to them. How there was more Len had to do when they finished eating, and could not just leave.

One of his troop looked over at their leader snickering to himself, before getting waved off. By and large, there were not many cats along the road Len had walked once he got out of the city. The settlement was close to the outer walls of Karakura Central; within an hour's walk on foot, without using any kind of augmented speed.

The scent of the forest surrounded Len's body as he strode back outside. He had made one other stop in those woods this morning; trying to figure out more about what his Uncle had taught him. In that clearing in the woods, there were several water bottles, a towel, and a very strong amount of Len's overall scent. There was also a small futon on the ground, with a leather bound book next to it. That book was filled with even more photos; along with scraps of notebook paper, hand scribbled notes covering them.

It was after his morning exercise that Len had arrived at work this morning. He still was none the wiser of what to do with this technique. Presently, he began to try again, this time in view of his subordinates.

One hand reached outwards, and he tried.. to manipulate the flow of his spiritual energy. Once again, it spiked. And once again... it did not work. The energy seeped out of Len's body as he released control of it. But it was much easier to feel him, now. The entire camp was awash in his spiritual presence. Even if he was not successful in the technique... his presence was at least discouraging any interlopers from comig near.

At least... normal interlopers.

Len's crew knew relatively little about his past. They knew he liked to talk about his crazy cat, and the kind of shenanigans she liked to get up to. They knew about his friend Cero, and how he had gradually come to live by himself. For the most part, he did not go out of his way to interact with them. He was polite, and would hold conversation. But they never really saw him out of his uniform. They knew about his family, yes, but they did not know about his strained relationship with his father.

And they certainly did not know the exact nature of what his cat was capable of...

Danava of Fortune - Sassy

The difference between the Cat and those around her was tremendous, such as night and day. Among a throng of men and women whom put one foot in front of the other at a casual pace, to get from place to place, there stood out a tanned-skinned femme fatale dressed in naught but the bare minimum. But even more than that was the brisk, wild movement used to push through it all. She, who was in such a rush to reach her destination, flew over the masses like a blur of brown and gold, her bare feet only gracing the ground for brief moments before her form took off into the air again. Below, spectators released sounds of surprise, awe, and complaint as their slow everyday life was disrupted by the rush of a passionate soul. They didn't understand the importance of this reunion, is all.

The cat landed deftly at the precipice of a condominium rooftop, Len's white shirt rustling from the abrupt stop. Her body fell into a crouch, before slowly rising up and standing erect... and she looked on over a wire fence where Karakura's urban development ended and gave way to a still relatively pristine expanse of nature. The forest on the outskirts of the city that hadn't changed since she had last been here, and had probably been the same for centuries before. There was something special about this place, even if she was oblivious to what it was. But it had to be important if these trees still stood today.

The cat turned her nose up to the air and closed her eyes, shifting her focus to the smells in the air and shutting out everything else. And as she caught on to the subtle trail of Len, the pair of cat ears nested in her hair rose with excitement. This was definitely the correct path! He was assuredly somewhere beyond the city limits, into the claim of nature. Leaving behind the metropolitan noise of Karakura, the cat dived into the treetops and continued her hunt for the one most important to her. It wouldn't be long now, with her strength and speed, the distance could be tracked in mere moments.

"Len!" she shouted, falling down through an opening in the canopy, kicking up a cascade of leaves and dust as all four of her paws hit the ground. Her head whipped around in both directions, searching for him. This area, this clearing is where the trail had led her, possessing an aroma stronger than its surroundings. Yet though she scanned the area, she found no sign of even one human. Only the... leavings of someone who passed by here. She walked towards a makeshift bivouac, stocked with water and a sleeping roll. None of it really mattered, here, except for the album lying beside it. And so she knelt on the ground next to it to investigate.

At first it was just curiosity that claimed her, opening up the book simply to search for a hint. Yet upon discovering the pictures that were held inside, her eyes went wide and a smile crept on her face. She kept turning the pages to see more and read more... more of the memories that her master kept sacred. Her quest somewhat forgotten, the cat selfishly pored through it all, for some time. And thanks to this, a flutter of happiness rose up through her body. After all this time... Sassy couldn't be more thrilled.

Len's eyes were closed. His breaths came in, and out. Focusing the energy within his body, trying to focus. Inside of his hands, he felt the entire world begin to come to a halt. His thoughts slowed, his very heart rang in his ears. Slow, calm. Slow and steady. Starting from deep inside; starting from almost nothing. Len felt his energy beginning to flow once again. Flowing between his fingertips, the sensation of power beginning to solidify itself. The human's spiritual energy shining between his fingers. The rest of the world tuned out for him, beginning to rotate it… feeling the power circulating, feeling it beginning to -

"Sir! Something is coming this way!"

Len's body jerked. The energy snapped back against his hands, burning into his gloves as they tore in small places. His soft fingers emerged from the torn material, mostly unaffected by the expulsion of energy. Len's eyes inspected them for a moment, before looking up at the soldier who had called out to him. "Huh?" Len focused on his soldier, the one who currently needed his attention. He had finally been taken out of his thoughts. He realized that his soldiers may have finally noticed his absent-mindedness.

"Something's coming! We're not sure what, it looks to be some kind of… individual, they leapt over the city's defenses… it managed to scale the walls over Karakura! Based on the individual's direction, sir, they're headed straight this way!"

Len's brow furrowed. Who could know that they were here? Who could have leaked such information - or were they somehow being tracked? And who would be attacking right now, alone? "Alright. Here's what we're going to do. Take positions, men! Get the people inside of their homes; I'll meet the enemy myself. It's just one, right?" Len barked out orders, quickly getting the attention of the soldiers who were standing near the road. They immediately began to act, spreading the news about what was happening.

For his part, Len stepped forward into the road itself. Behind him, his soldiers moved the new defenses into place. The young man did not know what to expect; but he was reasonably certain that he would at least be able to hold them off for some amount of time. If it turned out that they needed reinforcements, then he would command one of his soldiers to send for them. "Do not approach. Not until we know what we're dealing with."

The soldiers stood there, waiting in anticipation. What was about to happen? Would their leader fall to this assailant?

Would they need to defend this place with their lives?

Danava of Fortune - Sassy

For a time, there was solace. The morning sun still tinged the day in crisp golden light, but mellowed throughout the underbrush of the great forest, with a thick layer of canopy to obfuscate the sky from the ground. It was cozier, calmer beneath the blanket of forestry. Medallion rays danced across the pages of the notebook, reflecting shadows of the moving leaves above. Motes of dust were highlighted within the beams as gently cascading around the mostly still cat. And brilliance radiated off those gilded adornments of her body when the sunbeams trickled across it. Neither the wind nor nature hazarded to disturb such a scene, as if in respect of such a beautiful moment.

When the book had no more memories to show, the cat gently pushed the pages back together. Without a doubt, Len had to have been as fond of their time together as she was. It was everything except confirmation of their mutual feelings, and that could be discovered by meeting her prey in person, after all this time. Setting the booklet aside on the sleeping roll—delicately, as if it could break apart with the slightest undue movement—she rose back to her feet. Even just this shift made perceptible the jingle and tinkle of golden jewelry decorating her body, especially in the quiet of this sheltered glade.

A ring became a chime, as the cat rushed forwards in a bolt. A new trail made itself clear to her, allowing her to leave the resting place behind. It had only been a checkpoint, belonging surely to her master, but was not where her master now resided. Further away from the city, yet deeper into the woodland, she raced. She was light on her feet like any cat, barely touching the sedgy floor, and barely feeling the shift of soil with her toes. Wind rushed past her face and threaded through her dark hair, not because it blew but because of her haste. She ran in a hurry, without the need of it. It was simply her passion that rushed her.

In only a few minutes, the wilderness gave way to the touch of human. A clean line of road was paved through a wound in the forest, bringing the cat to a stop on top of it. Just as her path intersected with it, so too did the scent of Len change directions, for she could only imagine he'd taken this route himself. Here, as if a knife had been dragged through from above, the sight of the sky above was unobscured. It illuminated the manmade road through the forest, in contrast to the dimmer shade within the treeline. Would this lead her to her final destination? What was down this way? She was too excited to hold it in!

So she ran. Athletic was not her technique, but it did not detract from the speed of her sprint nor the length of her strides. She was a blur of rich brown and royal golden, almost like a homing missile as she soon came into sight of the distant checkpoint on the road. Sassy's breath caught in her throat as she nearly stumbled mid-flight. A plume of dust kicked up behind her as she tripped over her own feet, and then awkwardly righted herself. Even from here, where details were small and fuzzy, the cat could discern the one whom she sought. Finally... Finally! Without pausing to slow down at all, she cried out in elation:

"LEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!"

…Thump, Thump. …Thump, Thump.

The young man's right hand gripped around the hilt of his sword, taking slow breaths. A light wind blew through his golden hair, his gaze resting on the road before him. He knew that it was just as possible for an attack to come from behind, or from either side… but more likely than not, he would be their only target. The barns here, the people, the village… no great conflict had yet started. They had no value to an assailant. But a man with power enough to challenge those who could damage cities…? That would be an asset worth removing.

Len was certain that they would come for him. So he would stand ready, his feet firmly planted. His heart continued to beat in his chest. He still could not shake off the memories of the multiple times he had been soundly beaten. The times his teenage form had crashed into the dirt. Soft dirt. Hard dirt. Frustrating dirt. Not again. Never again! Len's mouth drew into a hard line, his spiritual pressure beginning to flow out from his body. The soldiers nearby, the sounds of the forest… all of it faded before Len's focus, his willpower putting all of that focus on the path before him.

A deer dashed past. A bird flew off. A squirrel hesitated, before scampering off into the trees. The animals could feel the tension, the potential for destruction contained within the man's body. I'm ready. I can take anything. No matter what it is. No matter who it is! I can handle anything…! Absolutely… Anyth-

"LEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!"

...Clank.

The sound of Len's sword hitting the hard dirt reverberated through the clearing. The man's mouth was agape, his entire body flushing. Blood coursed along his back, reaching into every extremity. Thump! Thump! Thump-Thump-Thump-Thump!

The hat on his head was thrown off from his sudden movement. Completely abandoned in his haste as he nearly tripped down onto the ground, one hand pushing off that hard dirt as he straightened back up. A cry left his throat, half joy, half relief… and all completely out of his control. "Aaah, aAaaaah!" He let out, his symbols of office abandoned in his headlong dash. "Sa… Saa… Saaa…!" A burning sensation gripped the seams of his eyes as small tears pooled beneath them.

He could not think, he could not speak. He could only run toward the one who had never left his heart. His eyes could see her. He could see his cat. His one and only beautiful, silly cat. His precious, troublemaking partner. Her bright eyes, looking directly at him. The way her legs moved, approaching him. Her complete and total disregard for clothing. His… his shirt? Her long, flowing hair, blowing about in the wind. His...

"SAAAAAAASSY!"

At last, he reached her. Time slowed. The world slowed. To this man, in this moment, nothing else mattered. His body moved by instinct, completely prepared for her. There would be no awkwardness in this embrace; only her warm body against his, only his grip holding her close.

His arms wrapped around her.

He pulled her into his arms.

He never would let go again.

Not her.

Not ever.

Where she belonged. Where he belonged.

He cried. Hot tears, shuddering breaths, tired muscles... and beneath it, he was smiling.

He drew back… just enough so that his eyes could return to hers.

Returned to her, once again.
