Edward is a part of the demon force, the Banshees. » Shifter Appearance Written:
Edward is small for his age, standing at only 149 cm (4'11"), despite his attempts to appear taller. He wears his golden-blond hair long - usually tied in a braid that hangs down to his shoulders, but sometimes forgoing the braid for a simpler ponytail. He parts his bangs in the middle so that they frame his face on either side as they fall and, in the center of the parting, he leaves a single strand of hair sticking up like an antenna. He does this intentionally, presumably to add to his height. Ed's eyes, too, are gold colored signifying his Persian ancestry.
Ed has a thin, horizontal battle scar just above his right eye which remains because his subsequent battles cause the sensitive skin to tear open repeatedly.
As a result of his alchemical dismemberment, Edward was fitted with full steel automail prosthetics custom crafted by Winry and Pinako Rockbell. His left leg from just above the knee downward is automail and his automail right arm reaches all the way up to his shoulder; both are designed so that their outer shells resemble modernized plate mail. His left arm hides a secret as well, but that we'll get into later.
Ed wears as his trademark a bright red, long-sleeved, hooded cloak whose tail comes down to his upper calves. Emblazoned in black on the back is a Flamel, signifying his tutelage under the master alchemist Izumi Curtis. It is likely that Edward fashioned this cloak for himself, as he needs to repair it often and transmuted one from scratch using a roll of red cloth. During his trip to the northern areas, Ed's cloak was modified somewhat with a white fur trim around the hood to accommodate comfortable passage through cold conditions.
Though Ed's clothes vary, he seems particularly partial to black and will nearly always dress in black trousers and some sort of black shirt under his coat. In his usual outfit, Ed primarily wears a sleeveless black shirt with a black jacket that has silver/white lining along the edges. This is his main outfit.
As part of his attempts to seem taller, Edward is rarely seen without his elevator shoes - black leather boots with thick, red soles. Additionally, he frequently wears white gloves when in public to conceal the fact that his right arm is artificial.
It is likely that his general outfit is meant to convey a red, black and white motif, as these three colors (as well as the gold color of his hair and eyes) are considered significant in traditional alchemy.» Shifter Appearance Picture:
» True Appearance Written:
One of the things that seems interesting about Edward is that he completely lacks a true appearance in the traditional sort. He has no giant final form, or epic transformation into some lovecraftian horror. The entirety of his being is, in essence, energy itself. When not condensed into a Shifter form, or what have you, Edward's body is a floating mass of black energy. It's impossible to see through, and more dense than any recorded fog.
On the surface, Edward displays an immature sort of personality. He is decidedly stubborn and strong-willed, frequently letting his pettiness and vindictiveness get the better of him (it is this stubbornness that contributes to his codename "Fullmetal", as "Hagane" (literally meaning "steel") is a term in Japanese that denotes someone of obstinate disposition); he is somewhat selfish and remarkably self-absorbed, generally acting more out of self-interest than any sort of philanthropy as well as taking several opportunities to stroke his own ego or flaunt the governmental power and monetary license of his military position. He is largely hostile towards figures of authority and feels little incentive to follow orders with which he disagrees, earning him the distinction of being a loose cannon of sorts.
Edward is also rather quick-tempered, resorting more often to steel-fisted violence than calm negotiation to settle disputes (even going so far as to suggest that refraining from hitting Paninya because of her gender is a sexist notion and, therefore, against his principles). He has a reputation for being foul-mouthed and is an incurably sarcastic cynic, only too happy to bluntly and harshly relieve others of their comfortable delusions regarding god, reality, or their own self-importance. Edward has also displayed a propensity towards impatience and an inability to sit still for long, which perhaps contributes to his love of travel.
However, for those few people who have made an impact on him, Ed shows his deeper nature to be one of marked selflessness, unflinching loyalty and great compassion. As someone who has had to suffer greatly at such a young age, Edward cannot ignore the true suffering of others and becomes sympathetic upon sensing pain and resolve in people's hearts. Though his solemn advice to such people is often tempered with brusque criticism, it is only because he genuinely wishes to place them on the most direct path forward. As one who has to struggle with a maimed body, he urges those with healthy bodies to use their strong legs to move forward, and as one burdened by the mistakes of his past, he stresses the necessity of people taking responsibility for their own errs. Though he will intervene on behalf of the oppressed if he concludes that a situation has called for it, Ed tends to help only those with the will - but not the means - to help themselves, in which case his recklessness and disdain for authority often has him bending the rules to dole out a Robin Hood-esque justice in accordance with his strong belief in the concept of Equivalent Exchange, earning him notoriety and popularity as a "hero of the people", even with him being "evil".
Of course, the most noticeable of Edward's dispositional characteristics is his Napoleonic denial of his shortness. Even in moments of relative composure, any and all references to his stature cause him to violently lose control of his emotions and lash out both verbally and physically. Distinctive to these outbursts is Ed's tendency to take even the most casual mention of his height as a gross insult and interpret it exaggeratedly, mistaking words as simple as "small" for phrases as contrived as "so-tiny-that-he-need-not-fear-being-crushed-by-a-boot-because-he-fits-so-easily-between-the-grooves-of-the-sole" and the like. Those unfortunate to utter the word "small" in his presence are fated to suffer one of his vindictive tantrums.
Though Edward proudly professes that he does not believe in gods, his spiritual sensibilities tend more toward the agnostic than the atheistic; in private, though he does not pray, he frequently acknowledges the existence of a god in his speech, if only to justify why it is that his life has been so difficult.
Ed's aesthetic sensibilities are also quite twisted in that he is a great fan of gothic or macabre fixtures and will usually transmute decorations filled with monstrous or demonic imagery and unnecessarily gaudy details, much to the dismay of anyone who receives a gift or service from him.
He has also made it known that his trademark red coat is part of this general lack of taste, as it is "a badass color [that] gets the blood going".» Likes:

____________________________________________________» Natural Abilities: Demon Abilities:
Immense Physical Strength:
Centuries of physical training, sparring, war, and the fact that he was inducted into the military at a VERY young age have defined Ed's musculature and his physical strength to ridiculous proportions. His strength is such to where a punch with his LEFT hand can break diamond, and not even at full strength. Overwhelming Spiritual Energy:
Ed's spiritual pressure is strong enough with his banshee status to where it has the capability to level several city blocks by just releasing it. Having it flowing at full strength is enough to make some weaker opponents feel as if the air is almost impossible to breath, like drowning in it.Incredible Speed:
The physical strength in Ed's legs, plus his inherent power and his centuries of training have added to his speed to the point where he can move at around shunpo speed with just using his leg strength alone. Exceptional Endurance/Durability:
The fact that Ed is ALWAYS in constant pain, and has been for the past 5 centuries, allows his pain tolerance to be way beyond normal. He can take attacks that would cripple a normal being, and still keep on fighting. In fact, he can even lose limbs and still be able to fight. His physical composition allows him to take attacks such as a nuclear blast, and still fight on.Master Combat Specialist:
Despite Edward's small stature and young age, he is a remarkable combatant. Having apprenticed under Izumi Curtis, Ed was taught to condition his body through regular workouts and sparring as part of her philosophy, "to train the spirit, first train the body." As such, his slight frame belies a compactly muscular build that, in addition to his naturally high energy level and endurance, fuels his considerable strength and agility. Due to Izumi's spartan training, Edward has become a particularly competent hand-to-hand fighter, able to hold his own against armed opponents and even skilled martial arts practitioners. Besides that, his steel right arm and left leg augment his fighting strength by adding to his defensive and offensive capabilities as well as his speed» Unique Abilities: Seven Deadly Sins:
The first, and most odd, about Ed's banshee abilities, is his use of the "seven deadly sins" from Hell lore. For each sin, Ed has a different power gained from it. Along with this comes an ability that will be outlined after this one. The sins go as follows:
Ed's "Lust" ability is the "Ultimate Spear". While risque as the name sounds, it actually has little to nothing to do with the actual concept of lust. Ed has the ability, with his lust, to extend his finger nails (his human ones anyway) to any length, seemingly infinitely so, though he's never gone farther than 500 yards. Said nails will turn to a black coloration whenever this ability is being used. These extended nails can extend and retract relatively fast, around bala-ish speed, and pierce with roughly the force of a Zanpakutō in a shikai state, per nail.
The "Gluttony" ability can be seen by many, well.. mostly all, as rather disturbing. While his appetite, even normally, is rather ferocious, the "gluttony" ability allows him to take this even farther. Basically, his teeth, gums, and jaws are all surrounded with an energy similar to that of a Hierro. Reinforcing the bone, muscle, vein, blood, marrow, and etc within to rediculously strong proportions. Along with this, his saliva becomes acidic, with a molarity of roughly 30. Dissolving anything he bites into, making it both easier to bite, and allowing him to chew and swallow it without so much as effort. With this, Ed can even chew through Sekiseki. However, the acid doesn't work on Human flesh, so if he wants to bite into any person, it has to rely on jaw strength alone, which can bite with the force of several tons, but some opponents can resist against this. While using this ability, his stomach becomes sort of a trans-dimensional gate, allowing anything he "eats" with this ability to be stored forever, instead of actually making him "full".
The "Envy" ability of the Seven makes more sense towards the actual sin itself than lust does. Showing "Envy" towards other people for what they are, rather than what they have, is the key here. The "Envy" ability gives Ed the power to transform his body, voice, and his mannerisms into that of another person. Said person has to be someone he's seen, but he only has to see them once. His mind and observation skills are keen enough to pick up on almost everything about a person, and by using the imagery to study the layout of their vocal chords, he can recreate their speech patterns without even having to have heard their voice. Again, he only has to see them. This transformation, this doppleganging, doesn't give Ed any new abilities based on who it is, nor does it replace the original person. It's just an aesthetic copy.
The "greed" sin is more of a personal, inward power, than an outward one. It doesn't effect anyone else, and it's more of a defense than an offense. "Greed" may refer to him being greedy about his own life. Ed has the ability to, with only a simply thought, rearrange the carbon atoms in the molecular structure of his skin and bone to form a substance with roughly the toughness of diamond. This shell is extremely difficult to break through, but not impossible. This "Ultimate Shield" is the true power of Greed.
Edward's ability for the deadly sin "Sloth" actually allows him to be a bit faster than he normally would be able to, contradicting the sin itself. He is able to transform his body into a watery composition, flowing from place to place, easily slipping through crevices and grates, or using the water to drown or trap opponents, depending on their strength. Now, it is not impossible to harm him in this form, damaging the water also damages him once he returns to his original form. He's just a lot faster in this respect.
Ed's "Wrath" ability takes his alchemic power, and turns it inward. Now, normally, the manipulation of humans is something impossible and taboo, even one's own body. However, using "Wrath", Ed can assimilate any sort of material or object into his body. Using this, he can take the world around him, and turn it into defenses, offenses, or boosts for himself. For example, he can take the steel of a building, and mesh it into his chest, creating a stronger defense and an armor of sorts. It's uses like this that make this ability potent, even deadly, depending on the situation.
Edward's "Pride" ability is an interesting one to try and explain, as it does not reflect his own pride rather, but the pride of others. In the simplest sense, Ed is surrounded on all sides by an aura, with a diameter of about twenty feet. Anything within this diameter is subject to this ability. Quite simply, if one is bragging to Ed about their abilities, their strength, their life, or basically if they're being arrogant or hot-headed about anything in general, then it will activate this aura. Something to note is that the enemy doesn't have to be within the aura to activate it, they can be exemplifying this hubris anywhere within earshot of Ed. Whenever the aura is activated, targeting a specific enemy at a time, all attacks that enemy uses towards Ed will be halved in damage as soon as they enter the aura. This does not include Physical Attacks. This ability does not in any way force a change or alter the opponent in any way, it simply changes the flow of reiatsu and reishi around Ed to disrupt that of the attacks, lowering their full damage output. However, if more than one enemy is showing this trait at any one time, then Ed must choose which opponent is effected by this, as only one can be at a time.
One of the more peculiar things about Ed is the fact that his right arm and left leg are not, in fact, real. Instead of flesh and bone, Ed's arm and leg are actually made out of a plate metal called "Automail", the appearance of which looks about as mechanized as one could possibly get. On the stumps, where the arm and leg connect, various scars and burn marks can be seen, made from the incident that caused Ed this permanent dismemberment. If one would think the weight and adjustment of having two metal limbs would slow Ed down, or make him less maneuverable, then one would be thinking wrong. His reaction times aren't slowed because the limbs are hard wired into his system. The nerves of his leg and arm are both interconnected with the metal replacements. This, plus the alchemic properties of the metal to make it lighter than any metal of it's durability should be, allows Ed to retain his full speed, movement capability, and reaction time. Now, to the combat properties of it. It could be said that the automail is one of the most dangerous things about Edward Elric. His arm and leg being mechanical, he feels no pain in either of them when they're destroyed, harmed, or otherwise attacked in any way. Beyond this, it takes a near-ridiculous amount of strength in an ability or a physical attack to even damage them in the first place, as the metal is a biweave of steel, carbon, and a forged alchemic metal with the properties of Seki Seki. This special material allows the automail to take more attacks, directly, than even his spiritual being, making the limbs his foremost method of defending his being. Beyond this, they also make a great offensive tool, as coupling his already immense strength with a material of this nature.. well.. it would hurt like a bitch, if you even had anything left to feel pain, I'll leave it at that.
The ancient metaphysical science/mystical art of manipulating and altering matter by using natural energy. This act is known as "Transmutation" and its sequence is usually described as:
- Comprehension -
Understanding the inherent structure and properties of the atomic or molecular makeup of a particular material to be transmuted, including the flow and balance of potential and kinetic energy within.
- Deconstruction -
Using energy to break down the physical structure of the identified material into a more malleable state so as to be easily reshaped into a new form.
- Reconstruction -
Continuing the flow of energy so as to reform the material into a new shape.
The proper application of this craft requires not only a full understanding of chemistry and ancient alchemical theory, but also a sort of natural talent towards recognizing and manipulating the physical objects with energy, which require uncommon levels of intelligence and aptitude
As suggested by his unprecedented acceptance into the State Alchemist program at such a remarkably young age, Edward Elric is an alchemical prodigy of genius level intellect. From early childhood, he displayed a proficiency for alchemy, acquiring self-taught alchemy skills and comprehension from the advanced literature in his father's abandoned study at an age that shocked even his mother. Having incorporated alchemy into his life during his developmental stages, Edward sees the world alchemically and is therefore able to solve complicated codes, puzzles and mysteries much more easily than normal. He has also shown himself to be exceptionally adept at chemistry and reasonably competent with biology; indeed even his preparations for the failed attempt to resurrect his mother were indicative of these. Edward's near-encyclopedic knowledge of alchemical theory is astounding and contributed to his incredible success with emergency Soul Binding experimentation. He shows an uncanny level of focus that allows him to effectively shut out everything from his surroundings and devote all of his considerable mental power to whatever problem demands his attention, especially in the case of books.
As a result of having passed through The Gate and witnessing the Truth, Edward became one of the few alchemists who do not require a drawn Transmutation Circle to perform alchemical transmutations. By merely touching his palms together, he creates an energy circulation with his arms and transmutes by using his own will as a substitute for the necessary runes. This remarkable talent makes his transmutations both instantaneous and incredibly versatile, allowing him to use alchemy to its fullest potential in direct combat.
With this quick style, Edward becomes a master of his surroundings and uses the substances therein to supplement his physical prowess in battle - creating giant earthen hands to lift objects, columns of stone to gain himself the higher ground and ogre-faced battering rams with which to strike opponents. Ed also specializes in transmuting weapons with which to do battle and often crafts menacing-looking swords and ostentatious lances when necessary, but his primary weapon is his automail right arm, whose forearm plating he transmutes into various blades.
Of course, the true genius of Edward Elric's combat alchemy lies in his aptitude for incorporating the alchemy styles of others into his own after merely having once seen them in action, which makes him very adaptable to various situations. For example, if one were to fight using an ability that targeted and destroyed certain chemicals, and said person attempted to use this on Ed's automail, he could actually change the chemical makeup of his automail to negate this ability. His versatility is one of the things that make him so potent.
While Edward can transmute inanimate objects, he can also transmute his own body thanks to the power of Wrath. Along with this, he has also shown capability of transmuting Water, and even Plant life. However, Edward is unable to transmute the bodies of others with his main alchemic talent, as it is a taboo. The Hidden Taboo; The Left Arm:
Though transmutation on other living/spiritual being is impossible with Ed's main source of alchemy, his left arm has the ability to do so. His left arm gained the tattoo engraved upon it, the transmutation array, when his older brother Kane, who originally created this array and had it tattoed on his own person, gave Ed his left arm so Ed could forge a new one after Ed's was removed in combat. After this, Kane was brutally murdered, being defenseless with the loss of his alchemy, by a human.
As observed by those who have seen it in action and lived to tell the tale, Ed's method follows the cyclical flow of transmutation, but only takes into account the first two steps - comprehension and deconstruction, by way of the intricate and arcane Transmutation Array tattooed thereupon. By "stopping at the second step", the physical structure of whatever he targets is broken down and not reshaped, essentially reducing it to formless debris. By applying this method to his victims, he destroys their internal systems (general organs or the brain specifically) instantly while circumventing Human Transmutation. Now, while this may seem like an instant kill, it is actually possible to avoid or negate. While the flow of energy required to blow people apart is almost instantaneous, a strong pulse of energy from the one he's using it on, depending on their strength, could negate it. Along with this, it is possible to dodge the arm entirely. However, physical and spiritual defenses and durability aren't of much use against this arm, as even the strongest physical fighters can be heavily damaged by this method of transmutation.
Kane's left arm (reversed on right, just go with it), before being transferred into Ed's:
Born to Trisha Elric and Van Hohenheim of Resembool in the winter of 1899, Edward's first few years were relatively happy; but after the sudden departure of his father during the lad's formative years, Ed was left with his mother and older brother Kane as his only family. The three Elrics lived in peace in the rural village and the boys began displaying a remarkable talent for alchemy at a young age, much to the joyful astonishment of his mother. However, early in the year 1904, Trisha contracted an illness that had been spreading in the area and died, leaving her two sons orphaned. Even while mourning, mired in grief, Edward vowed to his brother that the two of them would find a way to bring their dear mother back to life with the power of alchemy.
Edward and Kane spent the next few years living on their own in the Elric family home, supported by their close childhood friend Winry Rockbell and her grandmother Pinako, and pursuing the alchemical knowledge necessary for their planned resurrection. Although they had gained a great deal of information and comprehension regarding the extended basics of the craft, before long it became apparent to the young prodigies that there was only so far they could go while being self-taught. In a stroke of good fortune, Resembool was visited by an exceptionally skilled alchemist named Izumi Curtis who, after some persuasion, agreed to take the Elric brothers on as her apprentices provided they pass a preliminary test. She brought the boys to Yock Island near the town of Dublith in the southern region, where she informed them that they were to survive for one full month without alchemy. If, at the end of their ordeal, they could correctly explain the concept "One is All and All is One", they would begin their training under her wing.
While there, the brothers discovered self-reliance and gained new abilities and insights relevant to living in the world under their own power from having to forage and hunt for food as well as fend off periodic attacks from Manson, an employee at the Curtises' butcher shop who had disguised himself as a masked wild man at Izumi's behest. Coming to realize that, as a human, he is but a small part of the world and universe as a whole, but that the world and universe cannot exist without a collective of small parts, it is Edward who answered Izumi's riddle properly when she finally returned. For the next five months, the Elric brothers were subjected to Izumi's intensive alchemy and martial arts training, growing significantly in both mind and body and gaining a great deal of alchemical knowledge before returning to Resembool. Though instructed specifically by Izumi to understand that death is an irreversible part of the flow of the world and that acceptance of such is important to the "One is All, All is One" concept, the boys dove headlong into their plan to resurrect their mother upon their homecoming, having advanced their knowledge while abroad and discovered the basics to a forbidden practice called Human Transmutation.
Devising a Human Transmutation Circle, amassing the elemental ingredients for an adult human body and offering their own blood as soul and biological data, the boys secretly initiated the Human Transmutation secretly in their home. Unfortunately, the Human Transmutation resulted in a Rebound; Kane and Edward were pulled into The Gate. Encountering the mysterious being called Truth, Edward was stripped of his left leg in exchange for crossing into God's domain and peeking at the Gate's vast wealth of alchemical knowledge. Maimed and bleeding, Edward was returned to the human dimension to find that Kane had not yet returned from his disappearance into the Gate, that the mother they had attempted to revive was a grotesque mass of organs only capable of sustaining life for a few moments and that his own sojourn into the Gate had granted him the curious ability to perform transmutations merely by clapping his hands together, without the aid of a Transmutation Circle - in the same style used by Izumi. Desperate to at least have his brother by his side, Edward willfully performed another Human Transmutation to call him back, this time sacrificing his right arm in exchange for Kane's soul, which he bound alchemically back into the world before passing out from severe blood loss. Kane carried Ed to the Rockbell house, where a shocked Pinako and Winry performed emergency surgery to save the young boy's life.
For some time afterward, Edward remained in a sorrowful torpor until a Lt. Colonel of the Alchemist Program arrived in Resembool on an inaccurate tip regarding possible State Alchemist candidates. Upon discovering the bloody remains of the brothers' failed experiment, he confronted Edward at the Rockbell home and persuaded him to consider joining the State Alchemist program as a means to perhaps restore his limbs someday. Edward, driven by the guilt of what his ambition had done to his mother, commissioned Pinako and Winry to craft him an automail arm and leg in order for him to follow his advice. When told that the surgery would be excruciating and that recovery would take at least three years, Ed commented that the pain would be nothing compared to their mother's suffering and promised to finish recovery in a single year.
In the fall of 1911, his new automail limbs complete, twelve-year-old Edward ventured with Kane to Central City to apply for his state certification. After passing the written examination and psychological evaluation, Edward astounded all the officials present - including the Führer, King Bradley himself - with his superb and unique abilities and even managed to win the Führer's favor with his brazenness. Within a week, he was issued his license and the symbolic title of "Fullmetal Alchemist". On October 3rd, Edward returned to Resembool, packed up his belongings, burned down the Elric house (claiming that, without it, he and his brother would have no means of turning back from their goal) and left home with Kane to find a way to restore him to normal.
This was, however, when everything began to go wrong for Edward. As a dog of the military, he and his brother were sent to the small city of Ishval, all intents being to demolish it. Furiously leaping into combat, it only took a few days of fighting before the last of the city was being burnt to ashes. However, not without tragedy. During one of the climactic battles, Kane was tattoing a Transmutation Array onto his arm, allowing him to also perform alchemy without a circle, like his brother, however, he only finished one arm of it before he heard Ed cry for help. Having been bested in battle, his mortality all too realized, Edward had lost his left arm, reliving his past once more as he slowly bled to death. Ignoring the enemy, Kane made the split second decision to save Ed's life, grafting his tattooed arm into ed's being, allowing Edward to replace his arm with the materials. However, the tattoo carried over with the replacement. A now weakened and ripe target, Kane was murdered by the strange opponent in a blast of fire. Ed escaped, only barely, with his life.
Years later, Ed's mortal shell finally passed. He moved on. But not very far. It was only a day of death, after dying from a bullet of all things, before he found himself in a strange new area, feeling... a whole lot less mortal than he had previously. With a crack of his neck and a new resolve, Ed set out to find out more about the area. He didn't get far, however, when a woman identifying herself as Mana requested for Ed to join a task force, something called.. the Banshees. Ed accepted, having nothing else to lose, and thus not caring about human lives anymore. Instead, he would use his abilities as a hired killer, a weapon... as a banshee. the Banshee of Creation.
