As a third year student of Karakura High School, Hitoshi was now working on his final year of school, having to finish up everything he had worked on up to this point. His first two years of school had treated him well, keeping his own powers concealed well while getting great grades at the same time. It would not be long before he could graduate and start working at a fancy place, not knowing what he should be doing once the time for it came. Working on his homework, Hitoshi started thinking about the things that had happened in the hospital over two years ago, just before he signed into the High school. Even now, the horrific visions had not abandoned his mind, and haunted him whenever his mind started to drift away from the present. Even though he had killed the thing that caused him to suffer, it was not enough to erase the feelings of weakness from his mind, in turn leading to why he had been working so hard in school to become a smarter and well educated person, as well as work hard on his skills as a Quincy to help those important to him. It was strange how watching ones family die like that could have such an effect on one person, yet could lead others towards suicidal tendencies. The world was strange like that, and that was one of the things one could always rely on to never change, at least until someone would accidently blow the entire blue sphere to bits.

With his mind drifting further and further away from the point where he could be studying in peace, it seemed like a good idea to him to go outside for a bit, to get some fresh air and some time to think in the great outdoors. Fuma park always had a way of calming him down, it’s large gardens, the tall green trees and the playgrounds where children always spent their time during the day, making it look somewhat spooky during the night. Leaving his house behind, he started the short walk towards the park, being no more then five hundred meters away from his street. When he stepped outside, he could already see the tall trees of the park in the distance, loving that even in the modern age, there were still parks as beautiful as this one. Upon reaching the park, he knew exactly where he wanted to go, because it was always the same spot that was visited whenever he headed outside to think about his life. This spot of his was his favourite bench that stood on a small hill overlooking the lake. Even though it was little past midnight, he had no fear of anyone or anything that might come out at night, things such as Hollows or Demons. After all the fierce training he had put his body and mind through, he was sure enough that no matter the opponent that would show itself, he would somehow be able to defeat them in battle.

Up in the distance, he could already see the hill, and decided to pick up the pace to a slight running one, reaching his spot that much sooner, almost as if he was worried that someone might reach it before he would. Taking a seat on his bench, he looked out across the lake, watching the light from the moon sparkle on the waters surface, creating a slightly blurred reflection of itself. Taking his time, he just looked out across the waters dark form, the lack of light making it seem as if those that fell in would be sucked into another world. Then again, his imagination had a tendency of going rampant when things looked funny to him, this time being no different. As he let his stress flow, he would just wait in his seat, not disturbed by anyone that might get close to him.

||Kayumi Yuhara||

The sun had fallen on Karakura City hours ago. The children that usually played here were gone, and Kayumi was standing at the edge of a lake. She was alone. A gentle breeze made it's way through the trees of Fuma Park, causing her body to immediately relax. The petite young woman took in a deep breath, her eyes closed as she enjoyed the cool winds caressing along her skin, her hair floating towards the lake as if it wished to move with the breeze. Kayumi loved this place. It felt more than natural to her. Everything that surrounded her was nature, the essence of her being. As she stepped along the grass barefooted, she found a softened spot to sit. She took advantage of the spot and laid down, her hair spreading along the ground. The grass around her began to move against the wind, as if it was reacting to her very presence. She turned to lay on her side. Her head was lifted by the gathering and growing of grass. The grass around her body grew unnaturally fast. It reached about eighteen inches in height and then wrapped around her like a cocoon. In reality, the grass had grown on it's own and wrapped around her body to keep her warm and lifted under her head to give her a pillow and some support.

Kayumi had no problem with this. The only part of her body that could be seen right now was her head, neck, and her hair scattered over the floor near her. Her eyes soon closed, comfort taking over. She relaxed until she fell into a soft unconsciousness, asleep at the shore of the lake. She had been in this place for hours and hours, watching and playing with the children that were here during the day. Today had been fantastic for her. She was able to receive the teaching job she wanted at Karakura High. When something good happened, this was the place she would come to celebrate. She had no where else to go but home, and that wasn't exactly where she wanted to be. Now, asleep on the side of the lake, wrapped in soft grass, Kayumi was completely content and trusting of those who might come along. It wasn't the smartest idea for a young woman to fall asleep like this, but if anything were to happen, she was able to take care of herself, if needed.

Looking out across the lake, his attention was suddenly brought to the side of the lake, his sixth sense drawn to spiritual activity not too far from him. Incapable of truly seeing what was going on from the distance, he got up from his seat and walked towards it’s source at a steady pace, his mind pondering on what it could be. It was not one of the biggest sources of energy he had ever seen, though it was something worth checking out when it was this close to him. As his imagination rose, he figured that it might be some invisible leprechaun that was hiding under the cover of night, maybe hiding a pot of gold, or maybe it was an Imp, taking a peepee in the lake at night. Whatever it was, he had gotten quite interested in what it might be, his eyes locked on it’s location so as to not let it get away. Hitoshi had been reading into a large amount of mythological books and novels based on history and the various religions in the world. He was not religious himself, because he had no love for things such as Christianity or the Islam, but always enjoyed hearing the stories from all over the world, knowing that some demons and monsters were real, and walked around the earth just like humans did.

As he got closer to the origin of the Reiatsu, he noticed that there was a lot of tall grass, and… a head… just laying there. Not moving at all, it seemed as if someone had killed someone there just now, and left the head there for someone else to find when they went into the lake to swim. Then again, what if it was one of those Nuke-Kubi, a type of Youkai that looked like a normal human during the day, because it attached it’s severed head to it’s victim, but let go of the body at night to find a new victim. He had been reading in one of his books that in one of the Japanese myths, a family of Nuke-kubi had attached themselves to a set of bodies, looking like a normal family during the day, but killing and feeding during the night. It seemed that when they chased after a Samurai, it had led them into a net meant for catching birds, escaping with his life. In case this was in fact a Nuke-Kubi, he would not want to be used as a meat-suit, and held his Pendant tightly in the palm of his hand, ready to call forth his spirit weapon and blast it to the depths of hell. Fully prepared to drop a bombshell on whatever it was that sent out this Reiatsu, he came to find out that none of his wild ideas were real.

Upon reaching the site of the energy, it seemed that it was just a pretty woman that had fallen asleep in the grass. That was not all though, for it seemed as if some of the Reiatsu was originating from the Grass itself. As a Quincy, Hitoshi had quite a skill in sensing spiritual pressure, and it was not just his mind playing tricks on him, that much was sure. Somehow, the grass had been caused to grow around her like some sort of cocoon or outdoor sleeping bag that made people look like mummies to him and his imaginative prowess. Still wondering if it would be okay to do something about whatever was going on, he placed one hand behind her head, and the other on her shoulder, trying to pull her up a bit, gently waking her. Unsure of what the grass might do about it, he was ready to fight at any given moment if the situation would ask for it. “Hey miss, are you okay?” he said, hoping she would wake up without getting startled.

The moment someone entered within thirty feet of her body, Kayumi was completely alert. This being did not seem hostile, nor was it a child or someone that knew her. She kept still, wondering what they would do. Another breeze pushed through the area, slightly harder than before. In a way, it was warning. This warning was not for her, but for the stranger that approached her still body. Kayumi did not tense. She was still just as relaxed. She kept her eyes closed the entire time. No. He was not hostile. He set his hand on the back of her head and another on her shoulder. She turned over and opened her brightly colored eyes, staring at him for a moment. She blinked a few times and then smiled. "Oh yes." she nodded to him as the grass that blanketed her receded, "I was just resting for a short while. Thank you very much for waking me." Kayumi stood up and straightened out her thigh length hair. Kayumi would always seem to have a strange glow about her, never is this intentional. She looked around to see what time it was and realized it was passed midnight.

"Oh dear..." she said in a sweet tone, "I can't believe I fell asleep for so long... I guess I was really exhausted." Turning her attention back to the male that had come to see if she was all right, she smiled. "What is a young man such as yourself doing out here so late?" she asked him with a sweet smile. She tilted her head slightly tot he side, awaiting his answer if he would give one. Placing her hands behind her back, she kept the kind smile going. "My name is Kayumi. What is yours?" she said after he would explain, obviously a very friendly woman. Kayumi was a mere five foot three inches tall, had hair passed her waist, bright pinkish-red eyes, and a smile that could light up any room. Her friendly personality easily shines through when she is talking to someone, especially when she just meets them.

How strange, it turned out that she had just fallen asleep in the middle of the park like that, a thing he could not even begin to describe in levels of stupidity. Did she not understand the Hollow threat? The Demon threat? The fact that even humans would harm other humans because they wanted money, had a mental condition or just went outside to find someone they could rape. It was hard for him to understand the kind of humans that thought like that, because he had not once felt like plucking someone off of the street so he could stab them with his oingo boingo against their will. No, he would most likely never truly understand them until he would himself be struck by some form of mental disability that would lead up to similar events. This however, would most likely never happen, because he was one of the sharpest minds of Karakura High, and even had plans of becoming a teacher there once he graduated, set on helping out the students as well as he could. It was the kind of aid that the school had given to him that made him want to give something back, and what better to do then to get an actual job on the school. For him, it would also be a bonus because people had to pay him for something he enjoyed to do, and it just would not get better then that.

As his mind drifted back to the present, he watched as she got up, showing that she was shorter then him, but appeared to be in the same age category as himself. It was rather interesting, because he had not met this woman before in his life, yet he felt like she was one of the good guys, a person people would have no problems with. Still, he had some thoughts that needed to be answered, things he did not truly get to figure out yet. When his sixth sense mingled with what he could see, he noticed a faint aura around her, which was most certainly a form of Reiatsu, maybe even the kind of Reiatsu that caused the grass to act so strange around her. This was just a theory though, and he had no way of being sure about any of the things he thought right now, but he figured that the best way to deal with his own curiosity would be to just ask her about it. Hearing that her name was Kayumi, It seemed that she was at least an honest person that did not much cared about concealing her identity, something people did quite often. Kayumi seemed kind, and it was almost like she did not even notice her aura, or had just forgotten about it.

My name is Hitoshi Hikaru, and it’s very nice to meet you Kayumi. This may seem strange to you, but this aura I see around you, did it have something to do with the grass that seemed to grow and move on its own, or would you say that none of that had anything to do with you. You don’t… have to answer any of that though, and if I make you feel weird, I won’t stop you from walking away” Hitoshi said, realizing that it was quite a mouthful. Still, he had to introduce himself, as well as get into the subject of the girls Reiatsu and the grass that acted so strangely around her. Chances were that the things he just blurted out seemed strange to her, and if she was just another human that did not understand her powers, he might seem like a creep or a stalker. When he waited for her to answer, he looked her over a bit, and it seemed that she was quite pretty specimen, even though something about her seemed strange.

Kayumi smiled even wider and curtsied to him, grabbing onto the skirt of her outfit and dipping down a bit. "It is very nice to meet you." she said in reply to his introduction. Although a grown woman, she had a sense of youthfulness about her. She seemed young, vibrant, and had a rare beauty that seemed to shine brightly from her essence. Immediately he began to ask about her aura. Kayumi turned and looked towards her hair, realizing it was floating there. "Oh.. I apologize." she said as she dropped all evidence of her power. The breeze that blew through the area stopped, the grass halted all movement, and her hair fell to her sides and back like normal. "That happens a lot when I am relaxed and outside." she said to him as she turned her head back to facing him, "And yes, it does. I have this wonderful connection with nature itself. Not all of nature unfortunately, but a lot of it." Kayumi noticed a single hair on his head was out of place. She raised her hand and used her middle finger to push it behind his ear.

"Would you like to see?" Kayumi asked him as she straightened his hair. She was one of those people that cherished her powers, considering it a blessing and gift. She took pride in what she could do, practicing when she could. It was one of the reasons why she enjoyed being out side so much. It felt like it was where she truly belonged. "I have no problem showing you any of my power." Kayumi said with a smile, "You likely have some too, correct? Either that or you'll be developing some very soon. I only say this because you were able to read my aura and sense my location. You did walk straight towards me when you saw me sleeping." Kayumi smiled as she hinted towards him. She knew he was there the moment he had entered her sensory range.

...Thank you” he said as Kayumi brushed some of the loose hairs out of his face and behind his ear. He was not a big fan of people touching him when he did not know that much about them, though he had gotten over this when his own power started rising, no longer caring about such little and trivial things. When the woman shut down her aura, he knew enough about the fact that she most certainly had control over them, and was in a way similar to his own power, a power that only activated whenever he wanted it to do so. Scratching behind his ear while listening to her explanation of her powers, it might have seemed like he did not truly understand much about her powers, because it seemed rather vague. From what he understood, she had the power to control Nature in some ways, but could not control other forms of it, which made him rather interested in learning more about it. He had read that most Nature Youkai were shapeshifters, and only showed themselves in a human form. Maybe she was one of these, or had somehow gained a power similar to that of the spirits of nature.

When she offered to show him some of her power, his curiosity sparked up once again, because who would turn down the chance to see someone elses powers, the chance to learn more about the powers controlled by the mortal races. In his time, he had learned enough about the Hollow breeds and their powers, as well as the Shinigami Zanpaktou, an object he personally got to investigate and experiment with, though that was something for later. Right now, he would much enjoy seeing the kind of power Kayumi had going for her, the power that controlled Nature. “Oh yes, feel free to show me if you’d like. Also, were you born with these powers, or did they originate later in your life?” he asked, because it was not that uncommon for people to gain powers later in their life, something he heard about by his mother. People becoming a part Shinigami, part human, people getting a spirit sealed inside of them, or just people that did not find out about their powers until they got forced to unleash them due to pure levels of stress. It had been both of these things for him, because his Quincy power had always been inside of him, and his other powers only came later on in his life, once he got the right equipment for it. When he thought about what she asked him about his powers, he brought his hand to his chin and just sighed.

What if her power actually came from a Youkai, or if she was in fact a Youkai herself, that meant that unleashing his own powers could truly hurt her, if not banish her entirely. He was not sure if he should tell her the truth, or if he should try to work his way around it for a while. To some people, him using his powers was rather dangerous, especially his Vollständig, a technique that rapidly absorbed large amounts of Reishi and even Reiryoku, making it a lethal technique when used near spiritual beings such as Soul reapers and Hollow breeds. “Yes and no, I have always been able to sense spiritual pressure ever since I was a boy, though I don’t really have anything you could relate to a real power. I have a gun, I have some hand to hand skills and I can break a Hollow mask with a punch, but other then that I don’t really have any notable powers of my own” he said, thinking it to be best if he kept his powers concealed for as long as possible. It was not like he was lying, because he named a couple of powers he had, just not nearly all of them.

"You are welcome." she replied to his thank you as her hand dropped back down to her sides. She awaited his answer on whether he would want to see any part of her power and soon it came. He seemed a little more enthusiastic about it than she thought it would be, but that just made her keep that smile on her face. "All right then! Let's see...." she turned away and looked around for a moment, thinking about what would be interesting to show him. "Ah!" she stepped over towards a nearby tree and looked up at the branches. Right now they were completely bare since winter had set in and blew all of the blossoms away. She set her hand on the trunk and raised her arm, opening the palm of her hand. In a single wave of her hand that looked to go the entire length of the tree, at least from where she was standing, a small amount of her energy came forth and as rapidly as the grass had grown, the tree had become covered in cherry blossoms. "Beautiful..." she mumbled under her breath as if she was shocked about what she had just done. That was not the case though. She just really thought it was beautiful.

During her demonstration, she had listened to Hitoshi's answer to her questions. One would think she had ignored it, but she heard it all. Turning back to him, she tilted her head slightly to the side to think. "Well before I answer your question, I wish to acknowledge your answer to mine." she said with a smile as she stepped over towards him again, hesitating for just a moment, "Be glad you have a gun and some hand to hand combat skills. I do not. Also, be glad that you have sensed spiritual pressure since you were a boy, because... to answer your question now... I did not." She looked off for a moment, a single tear dropping down her cheek as she recalled the memories of her past. She looked down to both of her hand and sighed. "I didn't get a warning..." Kayumi explained in a saddened tone, "I had to learn about it all on my own and because there was no warning, it ruined a large part of my life..." She stopped talking. That was enough. There had to be some point where she drew the line.

"I'm sorry..." Kayumi wiped the tear from her cheek and took in a deep breath, letting it out slowly, "I should not be giving out such information to someone I just met. I mean no offense by it, but I would prefer to change the subject." That little bit of conversation would show that the current subject was very, very sensitive to Kayumi. Although he did not know, she kept a secret that hurt her every single day. Part of it wasn't big, but there was a large part that was and just thinking about it had the ability to tear her heart in two. After a moment, she returned to her normal self and turned her attention back to Hitoshi, wondering if there was anything else he'd like to say. It was late after all. "So... why are you out here so late?" she asked him, tilting her head to the side and obviously trying to make a different conversation come about.

What he was just shown by Kayumi was quite interesting, and it was not really something he expected from a human being, but rather from a Youkai of nature, a creature that tried it’s hardest to keep the planet green, keeping the worlds population of wildlife around. Every couple of years, an entire race of animals went extinct, all because humanity could not stop taking more and more for themselves, destroying everything around them. It was a sad thing, because most people actually cared about it, just not enough to give up on their luxury and do what they needed to do in order to save their world. Kayumi apparently had the power to control nature to some extent, and could even bring a tree back to life just by wanting it to be done. “Wow, that’s amazing, it seems like it just responded to your will. I wish I could do things just like that, but my powers are only meant to wreck other people. If I could heal the world, I’d do it every day, but all I can do is destroy it…” hitoshi said, letting out a deep sigh as he looked down to the floor, tilting his head to see the moon’s reflection in the water. As he kept his head down, he just listened to what the young woman told him, not really looking at her while she talked, making the surprise that much bigger when he did.

All of a sudden, he noticed just how sad all of this made her, and it was not something he enjoyed at all. He did not know her well enough to understand, but he could figure out that something about her power had taken away the things she loved. He saw her tears, and it truly made him feel that much worse for asking her about her powers out of the blue. He did not have the right to do such a thing, though he was not really in the position to comfort her. It would not be a good idea for him to ask any further on any of this, just somehow lock up this part of the conversation as fast as he could. “I am sorry Kayumi, I did not mean to cause you any pain. If I had known, I would not have asked you about it and just left you to your business” Hitoshi said, wishing he had never asked her about anything, and had never mingled in her business. To be honest, if he had just let her rest, she would not have been feeling bad at all, and he would just have been having a quiet night to himself. On the other hand, he had met a kind woman that seemed extremely nice, even though he had saddened her by asking for her story and forcing her to recall the things that had happened in the past.

He understood quite well that she wanted to talk about something else, because the subject obviously made her sad, and he did not want to be making anyone sad at all. She seemed like a nice enough person, so it was not that hard for him to think up another subject if it would make her feel better. “I decided to go here a while ago when I needed some time to think and get some fresh air. Ever since that day, I guess I decided to just turn it into a habit. Whenever I need to blow off steam or just take some time to think I go here to that bench on the hill to just look at the lake” he said, explaining her why he went over here in the middle of the night, at the same time changing the subject. Yes, School would be a good thing to talk about, maybe she also had some fun stories about the place, or something else they could talk about. Being a resident of the city, she most likely spent some years over there, leading to something she could certainly smile about again. Kayumi had a soft and gentle face, and he would love to see her smile again.

"Well thank you." she immediately replied to him telling her that her powers were amazing. Hearing the rest of what he said, she tilted her head to the side. "What kind of powers do you have?" she asked him, blinking a few times in curiosity, "If you use them to help people, then even if they are slightly destructive, that's okay. I mean... even my power can be extremely destructive and hurt people if I wanted it to. I just choose otherwise." Kayumi was only hoping to show him that he could choose what to do with his powers. It was sort of like the old saying about guns not killing people, people do. In her opinion, powers don't kill people either. It was the people that got the powers. It was their choice what to do with them. When Kayumi got upset, she didn't mean to make Hitoshi feel guilty by any means. When he apologized, she immediately pushed up a smile and waved her hands back and forth in front of her. "Oh no, no, no!" Kayumi said with a small giggle, "I am the one who chose to talk about it. You may have asked, but I could have easily told you I'd rather not say anything. It was my choice, not yours." The way she was speaking was also supposed to hint that it is always a persons choice in what they do. No one can force you to do anything, and that includes using your powers for bad.

After that, it was nice to get off that subject. She felt like it might have made things a little awkward between them, and she didn't really want that. He explained why he had come here. She kept that same smile on her face the entire time. Hearing him speak, she blinked a few times and raised her hand, shaking her finger. "Ah, ah, ah!" Kayumi said in a sweet, but correcting manner, "Hitoshi it isn't 'I go here' it's 'I come here'. You got to use the correct form of the word." Kayumi couldn't help but giggle at him. "Sorry..." she said, wondering if she offended him, rubbing the back of her head in embarrassment, "Being a teacher, I have a habit of correcting things like that." Well she felt guilty now. She shouldn't be correcting someone she had just met, especially when they were as kind as he was. Putting her hands on her face, she shook her head. "Oh!" she sounded angry, but with herself not him, "I am so stupid! I'm sorry. I'm sorry! I really shouldn-.. Ah!"
