Preparing herself for today, Captain Unohana promptly removed herself from bed. Each movement was like clockwork, as she removed her night wear. There were no blemishes to be found on her body and most would stare in awe at the sight of her bare form… but there would no doubt be attention drawn to the scar in the center of her chest. However, it was not merely a scar. Serving as the memory of the first battle that gave her warrior’s heart pleasure, this mark was something engraved in her spirit, a testament of her battle with the man known as Zaraki Kenpachi. Once her night robes were removed, Unohana swiftly assumed her captain’s garb, dressing herself with little effort.

Fashioning her hair into a braid around her chest – "Retsu's" trademark hairstyle – she erected her kind smile and welcoming aura. After her morning preparations, Unohana quickly exited her room, traveling towards the fourth division. Suffice it to say, the moment she walked in, the mature maiden was expecting to see injured bodies numbered in the thousands. War was hectic, and such things were to be expected, of course. She was revered for keeping a strong face in such adversity, but was no stranger to it by a long shot. She had tasted war long before most of these individuals were born, battle was something that came natural to her, and her experience in this field equaled if not surpassed her healing abilities.

However, no one was welcome to know that side of her. Few knew, and she would have it no other way. More specifically, would anyone believe that a woman as kind as this was in the past – Soul Society’s most diabolical criminal? Surely not; if anyone who knew “Retsu” heard such a thing… they would deem it a farce. They always knew her for her kind smile and a dangerous aura she emitted whenever she was upset, but few could ever understand the reason behind it. Either way, none of that mattered today. She was simply happy to meet her subordinates and carry out fourth division’s goal as she was meant to. Arriving at the fourth division barracks, Unohana greeted her division’s members before reclining towards a chair, waiting for the day to begin.

Upon Neviah's arrival, she was greeted with the depressing sights and sounds of her agonized comrades. As Unohana expected, the sight that greeted her was comparable to a nation of people being bombed by an unknown threat. Bloodied bodies, severed arms and legs, faces twisted in unbearable agony… this was the result of the tumultuous war that occurred in London. Judging by so many bodies, Unohana could clearly tell that the Shinigami had been decimated in this war. Not even a single Shinigami looked as though they were happy, and those who endured their pain, showed no signs of a warrior just emerged from a victorious battle. Depressing as it was, Unohana had grown accustomed to this cruel sight many times in the past.

She was a dealer of death, herself, but she was honorable enough to slay her enemies rather than prolong their lives with torturous pain. It would seem as though whoever fought her comrades had two things in mind; asserting their dominance and creating a sense of despair within the enemy forces. After all, it was one thing to come back with a few injured men, but this number of injured bodies was something that would deter even the most hardened of army generals. Sighing inwardly, she could easily perceive Neviah’s distraught face. It was to be expected, of course.

Neviah was a young woman, and while she boasted much charisma for a shy individual , the ability to numb her emotion towards situations like these was sub-par at best. But then, that was why Unohana existed. Serving as her motherly figure for the better part of Neviah’s life, Unohana had fulfilled the role of a mother with flawless grace. She taught her the art of healing, raised her as though she were one of her very own, and teached her the myriad lessons of life. She knew her role in Neviah’s life and never once fought against it. No matter how depressed Neviah was, Unohana possessed so great a motherly touch that she could quell any depression the girl had.

However, upon witnessing this gruesome sight, what could the fourth division captain say to her today? Like all mothers, she knew there were the times where you could lie and say things would be alright, and the times where you had to be brutally honest. In this situation, however, both options were implausible. She couldn't tell her that everything would be alright, because quite honestly, she was not sure today’s process would go as planned. Although a Shinigami had much better chances of surviving, would these warriors be the same after this crushing defeat?

And being brutally honest, especially with her background was even more laughable. In conclusion, it would be difficult to think of a way to bring a smile back to her lovely face. Removing herself from her chair, Unohana walked towards Neviah, greeting her with a warm smile, though a hint of uneasiness could clearly be seen. “Good morning, Neviah-san. I’m terribly sorry that you had to see such a gruesome sight in the morning, but do not despair. I, as well as my division members, will decrease your burden by making sure these warriors are healed and brought back to their full potential. But for now, come sit down and talk with me. They say talking is the best medicine for a troubled spirit. “

Even though Neviah complied with Unohana’s request to take a seat, her expression hadn't changed in the slightest. The extreme inner turmoil burning within her had drained all of the happiness that built her such a warm reputation within the fourth division barracks. Unkempt hair, blackened eyelids, a half-worn dress…. No doubt, this disheveled appearance was a far cry from the tidiness that she usually carried herself with. Needless to say, the way Neviah appeared right now only served to exacerbate the uneasiness Unohana felt ever since she arrived.

Despair had dominated her young soul already. Although she had grown into a beautiful woman, she was still a child at heart. She possessed the trait of innocence, something most children are inherently born with at birth. In that sense, Neviah was a helpless child to this situation. Children grow up in many environment; these environments sets out a map of how they react to the many perils of life. If a young man or woman was born in an environment of war, then they would no doubt become soldiers who know the battlefield in and out. If they were born into a life of happiness and joy, then it was difficult to numb themselves to despair or carnage.

Unohana had always raised her as most mothers do, in the presence of joy and happiness. She never once allowed her to see anything that would taint her soul nor did she ever let danger befall Neviah. Retsu Unohana was the perfect mother. She did everything required of one, carrying that role out until the very day Neviah grew into her own as a woman. But she never taught her the way of a warrior, of how bloodshed was second nature on the battlefield.

In truth, she could not expect her to react any differently than the way she was now. This begged the question, however. How could she fix the dilemma eating away at her heart? If she were to show her the art of bloodshed, that would mean she’d be revealing a side of her that only a select few knew of. Could she really risk showing her Unohana Yachiru?

Sighing inwardly, unable to find an answer to her current dilemma, she decided to break the silence. “What burdens you, my child? Ever since you arrived here, you looked as though your entire life has been destroyed. I know this sight before you is disparaging, but I can’t help but feel that is only a piece of the puzzle that has caused your despair. I expected that to happen, of course. I never raised you to see a cruel sight such as this. I only taught you how to mend it and alleviate the problems at hand. For that, I am truly sorry. Nevertheless in spite of my carelessness, it is my duty as your caretaker to perish that despair into oblivion, no matter what. Now, tell me everything. “ When Unohana finished her heartfelt declaration, she requested that one of her subordinates bring both Neviah and herself tea. Even in such chaotic situations, her fourth division members were able to react with ease. A young woman had brought green tea to their table. Placing the cup within her hands, Unohana took a momentary sip before redirecting her attention towards Neviah.

In a singular moment etched into time, Neviah gave way to the agony bearing down upon her innocent soul. No longer was there even a hint of the vibrant, vivacious maiden that had so always impressed her makeshift mother. Stricken with guilt, filled with despair, Neviah uttered every word as though she had committed the crimes herself. And yet, Unohana could only blame herself. She hadn't raised Neviah to know the cruelties of war, never showed her that on the battlefield, there was no remorse, only bloodshed and carnage. She had feared that showing her such things would've affected her development, but in the end, everything had backfired on the fourth division captain, and she was left without an inkling of a plan that would help her mend the sadness burning within her lovely child's pure heart. Faced with such a difficult situation, what would be the proper rebuttal to put her at ease? She was in a dilemma with escape as unlikely as surviving through a mighty hurricane with only a house built of wood. This really is troublesome, she sighed inwardly, perturbed more by her inability to help Neviah than her reaction.

Thinking back on it, she never quite knew what kind of man Ceon was, but there was one thing she would never doubt, and that was that he didn't believe in senseless killing nor would he condone such gruesome murders without bringing his enemies to justice. He was not exactly would one would consider, "a knight in shining armor", but he did have a sense of right and wrong. There had to be some underlying reason as to why he disappeared along with Claire. But that was neither here nor there, Neviah was who truly mattered the most at this moment - and just as she had done many times before, she would fulfill the role given to her by that young man. With a few more sips, she was finished with her tea, even though half of it still remained. And besides, it was meant to soothe Neviah's soul, something that proved unsuccessful so far. Releasing a single deep breath, Unohana placed her arms around Neviah, and brought the young girl's head towards her bosom, consoling her special gem. Neviah thought herself a burden, but that couldn't be any further from the truth. In fact, Neviah was but one of a few symbols that showed Unohana's "humanity". After all, who would expect the most diabolical criminal in all of soul society to care for the well beings of others? To an onlooker, it was a farce, but to those who knew her well, Unohana possessed a kind heart. And she would not abandon Neviah in her time of need.

"Although i cannot begin to gauge the pain you are going through, Neviah, you are the legacy of something great. Your father was a humble man. He was always silent most of the time, but his heart was always in the right place. I know not of his motives, nor if he even had the chance to stop your aunt, but i can assure you he is a good man, and only wanted the best for his lovely daughter. Don't let anger cloud your thoughts. "

She slowly pulled away from Neviah, her tone taking on a more serious edge.

"I... never told you how truly is, did i? Neviah.... the battlefield is where innocents and heroes die everyday. War does not favor the weak, and those who show even a sign of weakness are swept away within the tide of death. War is cruel Neviah, very cruel. But that's why people like us - you and me - exist to help heal the fallen, and prevent them from dying meaninglessly. Indeed, your father left you with me so he could shield you from war. His life was filled with it, and he never wished to let you experience that. I accepted responsibility of you, and i will let you know this... Neviah you are not by any shape or form, a burden on me. I love you as though you were my own daughter, and i cherish everyday we spend together. It pains me to see you in despair, in tears, in agony. And so, from the bottom of my heart, understand that you are not a burden nor are you nothing. You are a star who shines brightly within the sky, one who will someday reach the same heights as her own father. But for now, find consolation in me, and cry until the tears go away. Whatever you need of me, whatever you so request of your mother, i will oblige---to the best of my abilities at least," she finished with a giggle, playfully pulling on Neviah's nose. "A woman can only do but so much. "

Now that Unohana laid all of her cards on the table.... just how would Neviah react?

And so, with Neviah's single request, the atmosphere around the two took on a much more ominous direction than what had been established at the outset. Of course, from an outsider's perspective, her request seemed so amazingly normal as to be admirable, but no matter how much of a fake proxy Unohana was compared to this young maiden's real mother, she read through this Neviah's intentions with all the ease of prodigious scholar. In fact, it was fair to say this was not the Neviah she knew, and her hunch would prove to be correct, despite her unawareness of what was going on within Neviah's spiritual world. Rather than make a scene, however, Unohana smiled, though it was clearly the same menacing smile she regarded her division members with or the entire eleventh division when they became too wild and unruly. She would comply with Neviah's request. Indeed, if her desire was to be introduced to the cruel truth governing the battlefield, then who was Unohana to deny her of such pleasantries?

"Very well, if that is what my daughter requests, then please follow me. "

Removing herself from the chair, Unohana signaled for Neviah to follow her towards a location most suitable for the rondo of carnage that was about to occur. She exited the office quietly, the kind expression on her face never once losing its exuberant glow. Through her talented expertise in Shunpo, the fourth division captain effortlessly exited the barracks, making little noise as the two would now be within a few miles of the Rukongai district. Unohana elected to traverse the buildings, as to not cause any suspicions to the citizens enjoying their daily middle class living. In moments, Unohana had arrived within a barren wasteland, devoid of everything save... for the scent of blood. The two have reached the outer section of Rukongai, a place where no one dared to travel unless they were asking for a meaningless death. Needless to say, it is this exact place where Unohana and Neviah will conduct their matters, none of which are well-meaning. The intentions were clear from the moment Neviah spoke, and with someone of Unohana's intellect, how could she fail to notice? Let this farce come to an end. The curtain to a exquisite banquet of malice is about to raise, and so Unohana must play her role well - one she had discarded many years ago - the role of.... Yachiru Unohana or the First "Kenpachi".

"Although I've obliged with your request, it would seem as though i directed it towards the wrong person. Whoever you are right now, though you may still be Neviah, you're not the one who i have come to love and admire. Even so, since you requested to know the horrors that await the battlefield, it's only fair that i teach my sweet, loving child the truth of war. And so, allow me to give you your first introduction into the Art of killing... "

As these ominous words left her mouth, Unohana undid the bow within her hair, allowing it to flow freely and away from the center of her chest, of which showed an unmistakable scar. Turning around to face Neviah, her visage was no longer the kind, motherly captain of the fourth... no, the look on her face was much more appropriate for a demon, a war demon. The bloodthirsty nature of the first Kenpachi has just been unveiled.... now let the play begin.
