How many Hollows had it been? Just how many had Steiner Franz put to an end with his blade? To tell the truth he had lost count and the fact that he had lost count made the task that he had set before himself even more daunting. To be honest, he really hadn't brought up the need to train harder on his to do list. In fact he loved training in his the woods in Karakura, it was safer there, and it was closer to home, but Valus, well Valus had other plans. He had groaned about how easy it had been doing the same thing, day in and day out, and had begged for him to up the ante a bit and train under much harsher conditions. Steiner, at the time, had thought it was a brilliant idea. Believing that the only way he could catch up to Cirno, no that wasn't right, hell the only way he could catch up to the other heroes, and make a bit of difference was for him to step up his game, and get his training heading in the right direction.

So that is what he had done and boy did he regret it now as he plunged Excalibur into his third hungry hollow of the day. Blood smeared from the gushing wound caused by the blade on to his favorite coat jacket as the Hollow deteriorated from the inside, leaving nothing to show that it had ever existed. Steiner let out ragged breaths, gathering himself, and trying to focus his senses to see if another Hollow had crossed his particular camp. His camp, a make shift tent to be exact, was not much to look at, but for the past few days, Steiner had camped here. He had thought living in the woods would be the toughest thing he had ever done before, but Steiner learned real quick that that particular though had been a falsehood. This was the most difficult thing he had ever done. Falling to one knee and trying his best to recuperate from his struggle with a particularly nasty quadrupedal hollow, Steiner began to think this was a mistake. He was no where near strong enough to be taking on Hollows in this sort of frequency. He had just learned the basics of controlling his powers and things were just, not going too well for him.

Get off your knee, now is not the time to rest. I can sense another Hollow on its way. Must have heard the death throws of that one that you just killed. As Valus spoke, it felt like someone was breathing on the back of his neck. It was heavy and hot breath that was laced with disappointment. Valus really didn't like the fact that Steiner was his "chosen" to be honest, and it was evident from the way he was being treated. Valus called it tough love, but Steiner...well Steiner thought it was a load of crap. I had hoped that was the last of them. Remind me to have a nice long chat with you once I'm done dealing with this next one. Steiner knew to get stronger that he would have to take on harder challenges, but damn was this getting way too hard for him. His body was not used to the physical strain it was being put on and his body groaned for just a tiny bit of rest. Yet, as a bipedal simian looking Hollow made its way over a sand dune, Steiner smirked to himself. There would be plenty of time to rest once he had taken care of the imminent threat to his well being.

Plucking Excalibur from the sand, Steiner watched as it neared him, rushing him much like the others in the area had. The location of this particular wasteland was close to a nearby city, the defenses of which were good enough to repel Hollow attacks, and the remnants of those Hollows were here. Mostly too weak to do much damage and lacking in the skill department. These were the perfect adversaries for a person looking to hone his skills against the weaker Hollows. So as it neared him, Steiner did as he had done in repetition for the last few days he had been here. He channeled his Soul Force into his feet, launching himself forward with a Soul Dash. It always seemed to confuse these weaker Hollows that a man like him had powers and that he wasn't an easy meal, because as Excalibur cut through the right leg of the Hollow, he could hear a confused scream as it fell to its' side, probably wondering what had even happened to its' leg in the first place.

It would look at him one last time before Steiner gave it a good taste of the metal of Excalibur, watching it slice through the Hollow mask much like it was butter. The Hollow's screams end abruptly as Excalibur slices through what little brain it has in its' skull and exits with an audible "shlick", followed by a splatter of blood across the sand. Steiner stands calmly as he looks down upon the beast as it fades away. He wonders what sort of person used to be inside, just what kind of man had once existed inside the body of the soul hungering beast that now seemingly fading away from existence. He takes a deep breath, swallowing the arid air of the wasteland, and then takes another knee in the sand. You told me that fighting in Nevada would be easy. That I wouldn't be swarmed by Hollows every day, but would you look at this? I'm getting swarmed. Mind telling me why you lied straight to my face? Valus was quiet, not really speaking to him, and that irritated Steiner more than anything else.

Here was this being, of immense power according to what he said, and he was wanting to guide him, at least that is what he said, and now when the important questions were being asked, he just goes quiet? It was infuriating for a young hero like himself to be dealing with the cold shoulder and the constant fights with Hollows that he was getting in. It just wasn't right and though he knew that Valus had his best interests in mind yet he couldn't help, but feel that the current relationship that they had in terms of Host and spirit was being completely ignored. It felt more like Host and wall at this point. There seem to be no more Hollows nearby at least. Shame, really. You were just starting to reach your point of desperation. I wonder what sort of interesting developments would come forth if you did. Steiner shook his head, everything was about developing their bond, and pushing his powers to new levels. The fact that he had powers alone wasn't enough anymore.

Well, that was true. If he wanted to be a hero who could change the world, Steiner Franz would have to grow much stronger than he was right now. He couldn't be winded just by swing Excalibur around at a few Hollows, he had to raise his stamina, and push a bit more to reach whatever his potential was. He groaned as he stood up from his kneeling position, dusted himself off, and removed his favorite coat, now covered Hollow's blood, and threw it aside on to the sand. Steiner stretched and then made his way back to camp. He was starving and thirsty and if things were going to keep getting rougher, he was going to need to chow down now while there was a lull in the battle, otherwise he would just ware himself down more. So, he began to rummage through his tent upon returning to camp, looking for whatever goodies he could find to restore his energy.

PREPARE TO EMBARK INTO LANDEN'S POST!

He had come out to the wastelands a week and a half ago with one thought in mind, control. He was going to attempt to gain better control of his inner hollow so when he arrived he let out his spirit energy to pull in a horde of hollows and kill them one by one, day by day, in his hollow form.

That hadn't gone so well. The second his hollow was let out Landen felt himself caged within his own mind, the mask covering his face and jailing his soul. The Panther was finally free to hunt and that's what it had been doing day by day, hour by hour. He could feel Azai trembling each second in the creature that was Landen's hand. She didn't like nor trust this perverted power but she could do nothing to stop it yet save for bidding her time and wait for a crack to appear so she could slip back to Landen and give him the power needed to once again cage his monster.

This all had happened because of the events in Bolivia. Landen knew in his masked state he was more powerful but his lack of control made it so that he hardly ever used it. Unlike most who have a hollow in them his wasn't a complete whack job. Sure it was ruthless and blood thirsty but the Panther was smart so it could and would thwart every attempt Landen and Azai made to break free. It knew though it would have to give Landen his body back because as much as it liked the freedom it was lacking in the power it could have, power it would gain by Landen becoming stronger. So it was taking full advantage of it's time in the sun to enjoy some carnage and a nice holiday. The deep violet orbs that twisted like fire in the eyes of the mask scanned the wasteland below from a top a high peak. It had just finished raking a weak hollow to pieces with it's bare hands and the creature whine quietly, The panther having refused to deal the death blow just yet. The boned white fangs of the hollow mask would open and a small hiss would echo out when it felt another meager energy source not to far away. A few times before it had felt it but left it allow thinking of it like a dying fish flopping on a shore line.

This time though it was engaged with a hollow and had killed one just before hand. This upset the beast because only it could hunt its own kind, this was it's territory. It had allowed the human to live because it posed no threat but when it started to take away from the fun he was having it had to draw the line. "I guess I shall clip a little birdies wings...." He purred before walking off of the peak and falling through the air.

In his left hand Azai would appear, the Zanpakutō in a warped and twisted state from the hollow's power, but the right hand was open, palm facing the ground. Without a word or any real effort it tapped into Landen's shinigami powers and used his strike from the dark power, his shadow coming alive and shredding itself into eight black orbs that hovered around his right hand. With the panther's almost god like understanding of all of Landen's abilities it warped the orbs into two large discuses that a man could fit through. The falling body of the hollowifed Landen fell through one of the shadow portals and the other vanished, appearing twenty feet behind the energy source.

Within the blink of an eye The masked vizard appeared in the sand. His bare feet kicking up dust and his clawed hands gripping his Zanpakutō even harder. Anger was rising up out of the hollow and he wanted to smack thebeing that dared come into his haven down. This was his hunting ground and he wasn't going to have some little holy feeling child come and defile it. A violet cero began to charge up in the hollow panther's mouth, black electricity crackling around it as it gained in power before he shot it off, a wave of sand coming up in it's wake as it rushed the panting boy from behind. Wasting no time the hollow would appear by the boy's right side in a flash with Azai coming upward, the blade swaying like a snake ready to strike, the metal appearing to be like rubber as it swayed back and forth before the hollow brought the blade down to slice into the boy's sword arm. Inches from the skin the Zanpakutō stopped. Landen pulling his arm back, trying to regain control of his own body from behind the mask. With a grunt his right hand would come up and start to pull the mask off, the inner fight would give the boy enough time to react or attack Landen.

Artist: Yuki Kajiura - Song: The Battle Is To The Strong - Word Count: 1,126

As he rummaged for snacks, minding his own business he had little to no inkling as to what he had done wrong. To be honest, he had come here to hone his own skills, but to also build up his kinship with his Ziamchi spirit. It was true at times he despised having Valus inside of him, but he was a mentor to him, and was sort of the father figure that he never had. Which was an odd thing for him to say, but at the same time it felt right to consider Valus like a father, and though he pushed Steiner hard, he could at least understand what the end purpose was for it. They both wanted to get strong, they both wanted to push themselves to new heights, but that took time, and it took effort. Steiner was determined to make sure that this particular visit to the wasteland wouldn't be completely wasted on his weakness and hoped he could gain something from it. That is when the chaos began, the horror, and realization of the line he had just walked over, and the world he had finally emerged into. Steiner, you need to move right now! As Valus gave him the warning, Steiner turned to see what was happening.

He had little to no time to react as he saw a horrible visage charging up what he had heard was known as a "Cero", yet he had been here for a few days, and yet to see one in use. He had been told that was due to the weakness of these particular Hollows in this specific location. They weren't strong, not overly strong at least, and Steiner though weak as he was could handle them. This however, was a completely different beast entirely, this was a bipedal, and humanoid looking Hollow. He had met an Arrancar, but he had never seen something like this, and as it finished charging its' Cero, Steiner knew he would only have seconds to react to such a thing, maybe less if he kept thinking about his reaction. So, tossing aside all hesitation, and looking to gain some distance, Steiner focused, and in that instance he accelerated his feet while also calling on some power from his Anima Stone.

It was then it that moment that Steiner would use something similar to a shunpo to move an appropriate distance from the Cero to at least dodge fatal damage. His reward for doing this was a feeling of breathlessness and then him being shoved forward by the explosion, this was followed by him rolling forward much like a ball. Finally, after rolling for what felt like a good couple seconds, Steiner got back to his feet, still clutching Excalibur, and wearing a few new bruises from this acrobatic feat. He groaned as his eyes searched through the kicked up sand and the smoke left by the explosion, looking for the source of the attack, and trying to judge his next course of action. It was in that moment that he saw the beast, inches from him. Just how had this being caught him so unaware? How had he been so stupid? Never take your eyes off an opponent had been what he had been told for weeks by Valus, he had been instructed that if he were to fight someone stronger than him, that he should always keep his eyes on the opponent, and always be on guard. But now he had just squandered both of those rules like they were toilet paper.

He tried his best to defend himself, but his speed was much too low, and his body much too tired to match the speed of the being. He was going to die. The thought made him growl inside and Valus wince at the thought of death this soon into their quest. Yet, as Valus lamented, a fire was lit inside of Steiner, and that all too familiar fire that Steiner had felt on that day during his fight with the Arrancar caused him to feel that this situation was not lost just yet. That he had to be determined, that he had to struggle here, and fight on regardless of how strong his foe was. This was his time to take his first steps, but as his mind raced, the creatures sword came for his sword arm, and in that moment Steiner would try his best to dodge. Yet, it surprised him when the sword arm stopped almost inches away from his sword arm. Steiner managed to jump away a few feet and watched as the creature tried to pull its' own mask off. There is another person in there. He might be like us a bit. Steiner was confused by that statement, how was this thing the same as he was, it didn't make any sense to him. Could Hollows be Ziamichi? His world was turning upside down from the mere thought of that.

Yet, Steiner couldn't help, but think about what his next course of action was. The creature was like a Hollow, which meant that its' mask was its weak point, and that if he wanted to defeat this creature he needed to slash through that Hollow mask. Yet, he was tired, and not strong enough to really do damage to something of this strength. He was quite honestly, out of his pay grade in this certain encounter, and that didn't frighten him as much as fill him with even more determination to be stronger than before. He lifted Excalibur and in that moment he would Soul Dash, running around his opponent in a circular fashion, and building momentum. What he lacked in speed, Steiner had made up for it in speed, and willpower, he was going to speed himself up to a point to where he could slash through that mask. As he continued to speed up by putting more Soul Force into his movement, Steiner would begin to build up a minature sand cyclone around his opponent, eventually Steiner would become a blur of movement, and in that second Steiner launched himself at his foe.

He knew the beast was faster than him and stronger than him, but he would help whoever was removing that mask by hitting the mask with all he had. Which wasn't much to be honest, as he had already been using bits of his reserve energy to accelerate to higher levels to make this attack a possibility. It was in this window of opportunity that Steiner would slash down on the opposite side of the mask where Landen's hand was pulling on. Not trying to cut too deep as to damage the face underneath, but trying his best to slash through the mask itself.

PREPARE TO EMBARK INTO LANDEN'S POST!

It was hell, the darkness Landen found himself in. He only had one light, a window of sorts that let him see through the same eyes as the hollow. He could feel what the Hollow felt and knew this kid was more than just an awoken human, it had a dual soul, two beings in one. It wasn't an Arrancar nor a Vizard though so that was something new to Landen. In the darkness he saw the Hollow strike out at the boy and managed to push against the abyss he was stuck in in a desperate act to stop the Hollow from attacking and killing the boy. The difference in power was obvious but this kid didn't appear to be one to run away, didn't appear to be one who would back down and that scared Landen. In his fear for the boy's safety he managed to pull himself closer to the surface enough to take control of his right arm and enough to touch the spirit of Azai.

The blade of the Zanpakutō seemed to be alive, writhing like a snake, the tip of the katana had turned into a corba's head with black beady eyes, the snake being the color of the blade and still attached at the hilt, all of it's scale gleamed with sharpened edges. This was one of the perversions the Hollow performed on Azai and Landen was yelling for her to fight back. The swaying snake answered the call, the blade coming down and wrapping around the wrist and up to the elbow of Landen's sword arm, like a constrictor crushing the wind from it's prey. The Hollow roared in anger in pain, being attacked from the inside by Landen and the outside by his own Zanpakutō. It wasn't until the boy's sword glinted off of the bright sun that the Hollow realized it was being attacked on three fronts and this angered it.

Claws stabbed into Landen's soul, pulling him into the darkness of his own mind, in the darkness he could feel fangs sink deep into the flesh of his right shoulder blade. In the darkness vines wrapped around his own limbs and forced him to stay put. In the real world the Hollow regained control of the rogue arm and felt the Zanpakutō give his sword arm some slack. This boy was still coming and he wanted to cause fear, deep fear, down to the boy's bones. Instead of dodging the attack the beast headbutted the blade. The sheer defensive power of the Hollow made the blade bounce back off of the mask and send violent vibrations up the boy's arms.

A sickening purr would come from deep within Landen's throat, like a cat who was delighted, the Hollow's violet eyes gleaming with excitement. His left arm whipped around and the snake like blade of Azai flew through the air, going around the boy's right side and his back before circling back around his left to face him, the metallic snake aiming to entangle him to begin the constriction.

If the attack hit Landen would stand back and watch as the blade worked it's magic, either way the hollowfied man would speak, his voice coming out smooth and rich, like a demon with a silver tongue. "You don't stand a chance boy, but I do like to play games. Now let me see that little weakling sharing a soul with you." He taunted before opening his mouth and discharging another cero at the boy, more sand kicking up in the trail. At the same time Landen's shadow ripped free from his body once more and split into seven orbs that floated above the boy before they flattened like plates and aimed slightly downward at him from seven different locations in a wide circle formation. The eight plate being in front on Landen's mouth. Once done he would let out a roar infused with his dark energies, the wind turning black and pulsing with violet lightning before vanishing into the black plate and coming out of the seven around the boy, the black plates acting like demonic sound systems, the energy blasting through at all seven angles, the black wind vanishing and a concussive force pushing down on the boy, making the ground cave in. If it hit the boy his ear drums would rupture and minor fractures would appear throughout his body along with varying bruises on the top of his skin. Once finished the shadows vanished and reformed on Landen, the attack being a long distance sound styled one. The whole action took only six seconds to preform, the Hollow adding to Landen's already high speed and energy levels.

It would give this weak human no quarter's, making it fight him at its full power, making the boy realize the only way it stood a chance was to give its all. The reason was solely so the Hollow could crush all hopes this boy had, making him realize in the end even at full power he would stand a chance. That was the sick enjoyment this cat got when it played with it's prey. This is why Landen was so scared to let it out.

In the darkness of his mind the image of the battle could still be seen from Landen's restrained postion, the vines holding him down with fangs and claws still dug into his flesh, if he moved they sliced deeper into his soul and forced a howl of pain from him in his silent prison. The pain though was nothing compared to the torment he felt Azai undergoing. She was a Zanpakutō of nature and was being perverted into some sick mockery of her true self. He could almost feel her tears and he was ashamed, he had chose to let this beats out in this desolate location in hopes of taming the beast to use in battle, Azai had warned against this but still he went ahead and now he was paying the price for what he wanted to do. He was willing this boy to win somehow, to manage to find an opening in the attacks, knowing that the power between the two was vast but still he hoped. For now all he could do was watch and pray, pray for an opening on his side so he could break free from this torture and stop this fight before he had innocent blood on his hands.

Artist: Shiai Kaishi - Song: Carnival Phantasm - Word Count: 1,265

This had to be a nightmare. Steiner Franz had only been training mere moments ago, looking through his makeshift tent that was now nothing more than a crater, for some snacks, and now...well now Steiner Franz was caught. He wasn't fast enough to stop the snake like sword from wrapping itself around him and as the creature spoke to him, he listened, and though caught like a fly in a web he tried valiantly to resist what was more than likely coming his way. He struggled against his restraints, pushing, and pulling at them madly like a wild beast caught in a net, but to no avail. Nothing was working, he just wasn't strong enough, and the horror of that realization brought on a whole new set of problems for the young hero. The creature opened its' mouth, another purple cero greeting his eyes, and with little to no thought launched at him with killing intent.

Time slowed down, the only thing that Steiner felt was the crushing sensation of the snake wrapped around his body, and the realization that no matter what he did there was no way he was walking away. And he had been so close too! So close to becoming something more than a smudge on the world's history. Valus too, was silent, he was thinking, and Steiner knew this because of their bond. Thinking about how he had failed him, but that wasn't true. No, Steiner was the reason that this was happening, he was the reason that he couldn't stop the incoming assault from blowing him away into nothing, but ashes. If only he had been stronger, if only he had pushed himself more...well maybe...just maybe things would have been different. Yet, there was no time for regret now, he had lost his only chance at being somebody, and making this world a better place. I've failed you, Steiner. I just...wish we had more time. The once hot air that Valus' voice usually felt like on the back of his neck was now nothing more than a brisk summer breeze.

Valus had given up. He had pushed Steiner hard, had worked him since the moment that they had been able to communicate with each other, but pushing him to field test too soon....well that was on him. And now he had sealed both of their fates. Valus thought that was fitting, perhaps this was the goal all alone, to leave behind nothing, much like the other Caliber spirits before him. Leaving nothing to show for the effort of their creator. Valus watched the cero approach, to Steiner, and him it seemed like an eternity had passed. Each agonizing millisecond was highlighted in rich detail, the details of their end would at least be without question they supposed. Yet in their darkest hour, Steiner Franz looked ahead, completely resolute. He continued to struggle much to the surprise of Valus, who watched his soul burn brighter than a thousand suns from within him. Human survival instinct was something that couldn't be replicated, wasn't something that could be defeated just by the inevitable. To Valus, the struggle was over, and though Steiner was thinking of his failings and his own death...he still struggled.

Valus watched him struggle, watched that human spirit, and instinct push Steiner to new heights. That is when he felt something inside. Valus had never felt this power, this sort of strength that seemed to be flowing from Steiner like a cup that had too much water in it. It was overflowing, Steiner's special energy, Judgement Energy was overflowing throughout Steiner's body. Valus watched, it puzzled him, but he watched none the less as Steiner Franz roared in defiance at absolute defeat, denying the Hollow's want to see him cower. Denying him that sweet feeling of watching a man suffer. Steiner Franz's will came alive at that moment and in a way, so did Valus' will. White light engulfed the boy's frame, Valus couldn't see, and he doubted that even Steiner could either, but he could feel it. He could feel Steiner's strength explode outward and could feel what little energy that the boy had was finally pushing itself to the surface for the whole world to see. It was the boy's will that was the trigger for his first step into the realm of heroism. His first evolution.

As the cero went full speed, the blinding white light did not dissipate, it accepted it, and challenged it. Valus felt the explosion and the concussive force of the attack, but the world did not fade, instead the light faded, and from it a man, no longer a boy, emerged. Steiner Franz, the boy now man, stood before his enemy still wrapped in the familiar snake sword of his foe. His body was bruised and it was very clear he had taken damage, but the most remarkable change was the boy's clothes. An arraignment of powerful armor pieces, cracked from the physical strain they had been put in by the power of the Cero, but not destroyed. It was as if by some act of Divine Intervention that Steiner had survived. Steiner was surprised, but none the less with the power coursing through him, and knew that he had finally turned the corner. The world wasn't as scary anymore, but the snake tightened around him, reminding him of his situation as dark portals appeared in the sky around him, darkening, and showing him purple lightning. Steiner, however didn't shiver, and he didn't back down as the noise of a powerful roar pierced him to his core.

Valus could feel fractures popping up all over the man's body, these fractures spread to vital bones and ligaments that would allow Steiner to continue to fight, but Steiner wasn't going to back down just because he was pain. No, Steiner was working on adrenaline now, not just of the natural chemical kind, but of the spiritual kind as well. Steiner and Valus were alive and in that moment their chances sky rocketed. I'm not dead yet, Valus! Steiner roared through his mind confidently as he put his hands facing away from Landen's hollow monstrosity and then propelled himself forward at lighting quick speed by channeling geothermal energy, through his feet into the palm of his hands, shooting out pressurized steam, much like a geyser, launching himself toward Landen, dragging his feet across the ground as he did so.

He knew that the snake blade would try to resist his movements, but the sudden surprise of a quick burst of speed from what seemed like a position of helplessness would more than likely give him the advantage that he needed. After all, what was he to the Hollow? An easy opponent and he would exploit that line of thinking to the fullest. If he successfully hit Landen, Steiner would charge his own body up with Judgement Energy, exhausting himself further, but none the less helping him do what needed to be done. If he did so he would then send it exploding outward, much like a miniature explosion it would more than likely send the Hollow back a good distance. He hoped that by shifting the balance of power, maybe he could help the other personality break free, and thus end the battle. He did worry, however that this might not work, and with his options limited, he knew that there was very little chance that he would be able to surprise his opponent again. So this was a now or never move. This was Steiner's ONLY chance.

The Panther flicked it's tail, the boy had survived the initial cero but the sound attack had done considerable damage. Bruises dotted his skin where the armor wasn't covering. This would mean he had multiple minute fractions and minor organ damage but the boy had some GUTS, he didn't back down and in the instant he should have been blasted to pieces his sheer willpower held him together and helped him break free of the snake blade of Azai, something the panther hadn't expected. Granted it caught him off guard and the boy was producing high amounts of energy for his level but it wasn't enough to topple him.

The boy seemed to have undergone an instant transformation in the light that engulfed him, becoming a man. This made the panther curious, was it the boy's own power or was the creature slumbering within him finally activating. Either way his curiosity was cut short as the man propelled himself forward once breaking free of Azai, using his hands to projected highly pressurized steam at the ground while building energy and using himself as a bullet to impact with the panther.

The sun glinted off of the metallic scales of the snake formed Zanpakutō when he flicked his left wrist and pulled the blade back in, the speed of it over taking the human bullet. In the last second the Zanpakutō slashed the ground open, making a large fissure right under the path the projectile man would take, in the instant he flew over the fissure highly pressurized and condensed water would gush out, like a geyser spraying up from the underworld, the water would be charged with the hollow's energy but the really hit here would be the contact it first makes, the torrent of water hitting the boy at the force of a fully loaded semi traveling at 90 mile per hour. That alone would have enough force to put cracks in his spiritual armor given the difference in power between the two but the panther slowed the speed of the jet just enough to give the boy a chance to survive. He didn't slow it enough so that it wasn't a threat but just enough that it wouldn't kill or cause major battle ending injury. Wherever the man had been hit a coat of mud would be over his armor or skin, rapidly drying and condensing, the mud gaining in weight with each moment, being so much so that the man would lose his ability to move or stand soon but he would find the mud wasn't hardening if it hit him. That the panther was letting the mud fall off and become useless as he was having too much fun with this all to stop it now by making the fool bow down.

If he managed to get past the jet of water and still rushed the hollow with his attack that seemed to come in utter abandonment he would stand still and let the explosion hit him, his feet digging down into the ground as it cracked under the force. Once the light of the attack faded Steiner could see the hollow standing, looking at him through the dust, having only been backed up two feet. The creature cracked its neck and extended it's right hand, energy building up in it.

Now something completely unexpected would happen after the water hit the boy. The Panther would send a blast of his own energy at the man so fast that the boy wouldn't know what happened until after contact was made. This wasn't to kill him though, the hollow taking one of Landen's powers and modifying as it often did, Landen's ability to heal if the environment held high amounts of spirit energy. He would twist it and use the ability to heal the boy, use his own energy and not the environment's because it was lacking in spirit energy. The boy would find his exhaustion gone, his body would feel well rested, his pains would be gone, all in the blink of an eye.

The Hollow purred, "This is too much fun to end now, I'll heal you once or twice more before I finally get bored and kill you. Now give me all you've got if you want to walk out of this" It would taunt him, taking all of the pain it had caused and tossing it aside. The hollow would stand there, hardly showing any signs of fatigue, showing the boy just how far apart in power they were.

The blade unwrapped from around him and the feeling of quick relief of not being crushed flooded the man's body with euphoria. He had never experienced the level of pain he was in, his body's ligaments, and bones were fractured in multiple places. Thus, every movement that Steiner made was a challenge in of itself, but there were far worse things going on with Steiner right now. His own internal organs were slightly damaged, the pain of which could not be described by the youth at the time, but Valus could see it all. He could see the strain that the young man was putting himself under to continue this fight, but he could also notice the lessening of the boy's stamina as well. This was the first time that Steiner had ever transformed, let alone the first time he had ever fought in this form, and it was evident that he was losing this uphill battle quite quickly from the way he was breathing.

Steiner's breaths were ragged and gasping as he struggled to get the air into his body to keep on fighting like this. To be honest, he didn't know what was going to happen here as each, and every move he made was easily countered or read by the creature, at least so far. Steiner also was worrying about the state of his body, how could he possibly heal himself after this fight? He had no means to do it himself, no power that could heal, or money to visit a doctor. If he did survive this battle, what sort of shape would the young man be in? Would he really want to live with the pain he was going through right now for the rest of his life? If he had to, he would, and he would find a way to work with it, he pondered. Yet, the excruciating pain of having so many micro-fractions and slight internal organ damage was enough to make Steiner doubt if he could actually do that.

Steiner was currently rocketing at Landen at high speed, like a bullet as the Hollow had probably already assessed, and he hoped to at least make contact at this time. It was then that he saw Landen draw back his metal sword, much like a metal whip, and watched is slice along the ground in front of him. Confused by the action, he was quite surprised to see as water came gushing out from the earth. Steiner, watch out! Valus warning was however too late. At the rate of speed Steiner was moving, even if he let up on the steam jet he was using, he would not be able to slow his speed in time. Steiner managed to twist at the last moment, almost curving himself around it, but that was when the harsh reality of the damage that this geyser could cause was realized.

The tip of the fingers on the hand that had been used to summon the steam and launch himself forward was caught in the Hollow Energy enhanced water. The full force of a semi truck moving at ninety miles per hour, crushing the tips of those fingers like it was nothing more than a grape. Steiner's eyes went wide as he let out a yell of agony that could be heard for miles around him, inside Valus felt the shakes, and trembles of the pain. He watched in horror from the inside, unable to do much more than grant Steiner minuet power in this situation. He saw Steiner's finger tips as he began to spin erratically the steam that he had used now completely gone. The those tips now looked like nothing more than a mush of putty: broken bones, torn ligaments, and ruptured muscles. It was horrible to see, but Valus knew that Steiner was more than likely passing out due to the pain he was feeling. Steiner, who had his fair share of broken bones and scars growing up, had never felt this level of pain in his life.

It felt like nothing he had ever felt before, it was more than just stinging and dull throbbing pain, no this felt like thousands of little blades had cut into every part of his arm and were continuing to do so. Steiner had dodged the brunt of the attack, sure, but now he was wounded to the point to where a normal person would pass out. His eyes momentarily rolled back into his head as the light of Judgement Energy surrounded him, exploding in Judgement Burst. Valus saw the effect of the attack and his eyes went wide, the Hollow had only moved Two meters. Two meters was all that Steiner Franz could make his adversary move and in that moment Valus knew he had to do something, he had to stop Steiner from passing out at the least. Come on, Steiner you got to stay awake or you are really dead! Stay awake!

Steiner's body landed harshly to the floor, like a puppet who had no strings, and Steiner grasped the sand in front of him with his one good hand. He could hear Valus trying to keep him awake, but he was struggling to do so, blood loss and pain contributing to the bodies need to shut itself off in an effort to save him. Yet, Steiner knew what would happen if he fell asleep, he knew he would be dead, and that was more than enough motivation to keep him from falling into the blackness of a pain induced sleep. Steiner tried his best to use that one arm to push himself up to at least a kneeling position, his other hand still functional, but the tips of the fingers looking like a useless mesh of muscle ,hunnging loosely from his other hand as he did so. He felt like he was made of lead and each bit of pushing he did was nothing more than a struggle in futility, but eventually Steiner at least got himself to a kneeling position. He glanced at what remained of his hand and cursed his own weakness more than anything. How could he continue to fight with this much pain and damage? How was he supposed to live like this?

Steiner, coughed up a bit of blood, the internal injuries taking their toll as well with a sick sense of humor. Steiner glanced at his foe as if trying to see one bit of the person inside of this creature, his eyes were growing heavy, but Steiner kept himself awake with the prodding of Valus helping him to do so. It was then that he saw the Hollow extend his hand toward him. Steiner couldn't move, his body frozen from fatigue, injured ligaments, and the sheer pain he was feeling from his hand all contributing to his sedentary stance. It was in that moment that he was hit with a weird wave of energy, the pain dulled, the wounds began to heal, and his stamina slowly returned to him. It was more than that though, it wasn't just Landen's healing power, but Steiner's own healing power that Valus noticed kicked into overdrive once his stamina had returned. Judgement Energy and Soul Force leaked into the wounds that had not been healed by Landen's power and sealed the wounds that had not been sealed in his hand. He could feel little pricks of pain, not much pain, but enough to let him know it was still there as the bones began to push themselves back into place naturally and heal themselves as if it were part of his own natural healing process. Steiner looked at his hand momentarily to confirm his suspicions.

The healing combined was enough to completely seal the wound and more than that, he could see that his fingers were gaining some of their original motor operations as well as he twitched the tip of one of his fingers. He smiled, at least that problem had been solved. That is when he heard the creature boast, taunting him, and reminding him of his place on the food chain as it stood two meters away. Steiner's eyes returned to the threat as his mind raced as to what he could possibly do. We should run! Valus shouted at him his advice, but Steiner was having none of it. He was too determined to back down, but not only that, his will to save the man inside of this creature was keeping him going, pushing him harder than most. He struggled to his feet, the wounds in his fingers still not fully healed, and still throbbing slightly. He let out a deep breath. His stamina recharged and his body now restored, he had a fight on his hands.

"I don't know who you are or why you are doing this, but I'm going to save you.", Steiner's body tensed up as he used his Soul Dash to clear the two meters swiftly. Steiner's eyes felt weird, like Judgement Energy was slipping out of his body through those eyes, as he tried to make direct eye contact with the beast that had caused him so much pain before. If the Hollow would stare into Steiner's eyes he wouldn't feel anything at first, due to the nature of him having a stronger will than Steiner, but over time he would begin to the feel the pain of Judgement Energy attacking it's energy from the inside. Valus chuckled, the boy was using abilities, and he didn't even know it. It impressed him that his partner was naturally adapting to his new form at such a quick rate. It could be because this was his power and that he was always destined to use it, thus by process of elimination making it easier for him to adapt to it.

Steiner's true intent for clearing the distance, however wasn't too stare into the eyes of the Hollow, but to get him close enough to begin his attack upon the Hollow with his sword. For some time they had been on an uneven playing field, not in terms of power as it was clear who was superior, but in terms of distance. Steiner had always been at a distance, as such now that he was in close it was time to show him the fruits of his sword training. He channeled his Soul Force into his sword swings as he began to slash at his opponent as though he were dancing. The blade would appear almost hypnotic, causing hallucinations, and confusing images to pop up into the vision of his foe as he began his assault with Soul Dash enhanced slashes. Each slash would not be too kill, but to cause injury or maim his opponent.

Steiner knew that he wasn't strong, he had discovered this the moment he had first come on to his quest, but Steiner was persistent, and he was determined to follow along that path, even if it meant fighting foes like this. Foes that were too stronger than him in every way. Valus watched from the outside, proud of the growth of his partner, but that pride was tempered by the worry of what closing the distance with this creature could possibly yield. Sure, Steiner was a good swordsman, but he lacked formal education or training. Everything Steiner was doing was improvised and as such he was very much a beginner. He had no clue how good at sword play this creature was, but the thought that was running through his mind was that if he could control a blade such as the one he had, then more than likely his sword play dwarfed Steiner's own. He would have to watch out and be vigilant for now on. He was going to make sure that if something happened, he would step in, and activate a power by force. He knew his own powers and which one Steiner could handle and which one he could not. So he watched closely, readying himself for an opportunity to help his partner.

Artist: MASA-P - Song: Beheading Dance - Word Count: 815

The pitter patter of a child’s footsteps could only be heard by her as she scurried across the empty plains of the wastelands. Strangely enough a child of her level and stature would have been attacked by evil hungry hollows however due to divine intervention someone or something had killed them all. At least within the vicinity. Though she was definitely not alone, while hollows were murdered there were at least two people having at it in a death match! Even though such actions were not in the least peaceful, the beautiful sacrifice of one of their souls would leave behind a fresh body in which she could easily harvest the pieces of ‘peace’ to give to Khala. Even just the thought of doing something for Khalaism had left the child in a bundle of shivers, and the only release would be a sharp coo that escaped her lips. It was set one of them should most definitely die just having a taste of the euphoria of what she would be experiencing later on only gave her the drive to pursue this further.

With Blank determination she would have paced herself carefully as to not run into the middle of the battle, but surely close enough that if any of them turned their heads to her direction they could clearly see a tiny demon child watching them intensely. Blank wasn’t just standing there. Oh no. An energetic child like herself wouldn’t have just merely stood and watch a battle in which could possibly takes weeks to finish! No, no no. Blank found more joy in trying to mimic the strange ones actions, of course a child would cry and act like the one that is clearly winning above all else. Even from her point of view this wasn’t even a close call, the poor human would perish, but all for a greater cause. That’s when the strange creature person tail start to flick that Blank’s tiny form excitedly twisted her body to look at her own tail. His tail didn’t have a lantern! Not to mention it looked very different from her own, maybe he’s not a demon! The child couldn’t help but find herself in a strange situation, there stood before her a human and a-a... monster alien! Father Sunshine only told her about humans and demons, perhaps because they are far more common than people like to think. Whatever he was it was a disgrace against people with tails, his being all weird looking.

Now Blank may have been frustrated however, it doesn’t mean that she would blow her top; she was a reserved young lady in her mind. A hyper and childish one, however one can’t get mad because someone else looks different from her, that’s racist. However when Blank had been patiently and quietly waiting for this poor human to die, and the strange Monster Alien goes ahead and heals him back to full health. Even a lady like herself would lose her head, if she was more animated perhaps onlookers would see the steam pouring out of her ears much like a steam strain. Even though to her she sounded angry and aggressive, the loud scream that escaped the child must have been more like a squealing infant to the others. Stomping her feet on the ground the child would have continued to make sounds of frustration while her arms flailed up and down, flapping her long kimono sleeves in the air. She didn’t much care what they were doing in the battle at that point, and once the child had finally finished her sudden temper tantrum, her eyes darted around on the ground. Finding a small rock that was the size of her tiny palm, the child swung with all her might towards the human, trying to hit him with the rock. She even threw herself off balance a bit while doing so.

”WHY DID YOU LET HIM HEAL YOU!!” The child let out a screech before turning her attention back to the Monster Alien. “A-and YOU!!” With that being said she’d drop her head down to look at the ground darting her eyes back and forth to find something bigger to hurt him with. Finding her prized rock the child quickly scurried over to it, using both of her hands to try and pry it away from the earth. Even though she was struggling a great deal, the child was able to lift it off from ground however keeping it up in the air was much to hard for her untrained body. She was red in the face before tried throwing at at the Monster Alien, barely even making it a few inches from her position and so with a tired huff the child’s body would have fell back. Dropping her down onto her tush, only continuing to glare at the two with an angry huff..

“Why?! Blank doesn’t understand! Why?!?!”

PREPARE TO EMBARK INTO LANDEN'S POST!

When the man healed himself with the power the panther gave him combined with his own the Hollow felt a rush of excitement, this was the very best time it had had in a long time. It didn't want this guy to die just yet, he wanted to beat him to a bloody pulp many times over before the man begged for death. He was going to get a primal rush from the man on his bloodied knees crying for the panther to kill him, and the panther, like an appeasing god, would grant the wish. But until then he would make this whelp burn in the hell of this wasteland, he would make the boy hate every pebble in this land, hate every choice that led him to this moment.

It was clear the child was attempting to attack the panther with energy coming from his eyes, at first he would feel a slight stab at his own energy, like a thorn in his side. Not wanting to take the annoyance he would flash Landen's own eyes, the poor wretch taking the attack for the Hollow. His own soul suffering and not the bastard panther's. It would shiver with delight at making the man trapped within him suffer as the man had made him suffer, suffer pain of the darkness, of being alone. Sure he was combined with the Zanpakutō spirit but even she ignored him, even she pretended he didn't exist. Now though he was making her notice him as he took control of her form, turning the beautiful katana into a living snake sword that was his slave, now he would make the Shinigami that caged him watch form the cage while he had his hay day.

To top it all off the baka was coming at him again, closing the distance thinking to get in and make cero and kidos useless, thinking maybe if the Hollow excelled in them he would lack in swordsmanship. He would make him pay for that mistake, his speed combined with his utter mastery of his zanapkuto, in sword combat, making him counter the initial barrage of attacks the boy used. He moved in slow motion almost in the Hollow's eyes but the boy did have a decent grasp of sword fighting, he had the fundamentals of it down and if he had been allowed to survive he probably would grow into a half decent swordsman but the Hollow wasn't planning on letting the boy survive.

In the same moment he began to deflect the attacks he would notice the boy's arms would move in mirages making it appear as if he was coming from angles he really wasn't, the Hollow blocking attacks that weren't really there but still managing to block the true attacks hidden within the illusions. His speed in another league compared to the human's. After a few rounds of the countering he would find himself annoyed, inhaling deeply in frustration at the boy. The air building up in his lungs, his energy combining with it before he exhaled the air, cupping his hand over his mouth to direct the stream of super heated air. It wasn't carbon dioxide like a human would expel but pure oxygen. In the same instant a spark would produce in the cupped hand setting the stream of air on fire burning upwards of 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit, he would direct the stream at the boy's feet turning the sand to glass, aiming to trap his legs and burn them. The glass glowing as heat rapidly left it. The stream could have burnt the boy to a crisp at this close range but being the sick bastard that the Hollow was it merely wanted to trap the boy and let him suffer in the extreme heat.

Once done he noticed a small child, a young girl with emerald hair, two horns protruding from the hair, starting onyx black at the base and turning to a teal green color near the tips. Her eyes were strange orbs, on her lower back bat like wings fluttered effortlessly, a bone structured tail coming out of the base of her spinal cord, it having a lantern wrapped in its clutches. Instantly the Hollow felt drawn to her, like a kin for whatever reason. Landen and the Hollow had fought demons before and the Hollow felt nothing for them but seeing the girl mimic his actions then berate him for not killing the weak human made him feel as if finally he found a friend, found someone who made him feel not so alone.

She threw a small rock at the human then attempted to pick up a larger one and throw it too but only moved it a few feet. Losing interest in the fight the Panther would walk over to the small girl and kneel down, "Don't worry little sister, the more I beat him the bloodier he will be when he dies. It's always good to play with the prey before you end their week lives." He Hollow would say, his twisted voice coming out like an elder brother trying to soothe a younger sibling. His right hand would pat her head quickly before looking at the larger rock and picking it up. "Let me help you." He said while hefting the rock before flinging it the human, his being most likely stuck where he had left him from the glass encasement. But he had been wrong before.

Nothing was working against the beast, not his eyes, and not his slashes. He moved with effort, enhancing the hallucinations of his attack, but the beast was easily blocking them even with his enhanced speed, and special properties of his slashes. Steiner cursed his luck, this creature was absolutely pushing him to his limits and more so than that was pushing him to the brink of exhaustion. With each failed attempt, more and more energy was drawn as he tried to make another move to hit his foe, and do some damage, but each time it was blocked. Naturally, this was beginning to build the young man's frustration, why exactly was this so hard? Was he always destined to be this weak? "Damnit!", Steiner cursed out loud, speaking some of the first words of the fight as he continued to miss.

That is when he heard him inhale and seconds later start a spark with his hand, letting out his flame breath of high temperatures, Steiner closed his eyes, expecting the fire to burn him to a crisp. However, Valus was already giving it his all, granting him his own natural heat resistances making the fire ineffective in his intent to burn Steiner. However, Steiner was locked in place now, stuck in the ground, and at the mercy of the Hollow and whatever he had planned for him. For a few moments, he grunted in frustration as he tried to force his legs free, and then finally gave up. His strength just wasn't good enough to unshackle himself from the glass made by the Hollow's fire breath. He growled in frustration and glared at the Hollow in disgust, the futility of his attempts were probably amusing to him, but to Steiner it was frustrating to deal with.

That is when he felt a solid object hit him in the back of head, in that moment Steiner fell forward, landing face first in the sand, receiving a mouth full of the desert as he did so. Steiner turned around to see a little girl, he raised one eyebrow at her, and wondered why she had even threw a rock at him in the first place. "Get out of here!", he shouted at the child, "It isn't safe!" At that moment he saw the Hollow walk over to her, as if now the fight between them two mattered very little to him, and as he knelt down to the girl, he could hear him berating the hollow for not finishing him off. Steiner's eyes went wide, it surprised him that someone wanted him dead, especially someone so young, and at that realization Steiner began to wonder what he had done to make her so angry. Yet, even though she wished him dead, he didn't want her to be harmed by the monster.

Even though the hollow seemed to be forming a bond with the little non-human girl, Steiner couldn't help but feel for her safety. He focused himself, drawing heat from the earth, and then launching super heated steam at the glass at his feet. The glass began to slowly dissolve. That is when his eyes caught the Hollow hefting the giant stone that the little girl had tried to throw at the Hollow earlier. Steiner put more strength into the steam assault on the glass right as the rock was thrown. Steiner roared as the rock reached closer to him and right before impact, the glass would finish dissolving, and Steiner would jet away from the impact zone, only dodging the hit by a few inches. Steiner jumped to his feet, the remnants of his clothes covered in a bit of flame which he patted out, and as he went to attack again he realized the position of the Hollow in vicinity to the little girl.

He grunted, not sure what to do with the being so close to her. All of his techniques were mostly close range and if he went in close he would only draw the little girl into their struggle, something that he didn't want to do. Steiner, she is a demon. A demon wouldn't struggle with this whole moral compass crap and just go right for the kill. You need to realize that sometimes you need to compromise your ideals to get the job done! Demon or not, she is a child, and she has done nothing wrong that I know of. I will not bring her into the heat of our battle. Listen for once Steiner! You are already losing and the Hollow is toying with you, like it or not you are going to die at this rate, you don't have the power to fight the Hollow, and if this demon is on his side...then your chances of survival are going to drop even more. If you don't want the girl to die then flee while you can, while the Hollow is distracted. This is your... Steiner severed his link to Valus in that moment, not permanently, but momentarily silencing his conversation ability.

"I get she isn't my number one fan, but step away from her so that we can do this with some class. You want to fight me at my best, step away from her, and we can do this.", Steiner shouted at the Hollow. At that moment the blue gem in Excalibur began to glow, he remembered when the gem had been handed to him by Cirno. The gem that was supposed to be shaped by his own will and drive as a hero and for a moment he wondered what was going on, but then shook his head. He remembered hearing about what his gem was suppose to do and he had wondered how to make it work for all these weeks since visiting the mountain's peak, but now...now Steiner knew. He reached out, trying to bridge the two souls of himself and the being inside of the Hollow. Can you hear me? If you can...all you have to do is will it and we can talk. The hollow doesn't know that I can do this and this may be our only chance to get you free...but I need to know what I can do and how I can do it to get you out of there. I don't want to harm the child either...so whatever plans you got at this moment, lets hear them.

As Steiner said that he would also try to push some of his own reserve energy to the being inside, if the being was knocked out, or what not maybe sending him a tiny fragment of his energy would wake him up and get the ball rolling. But for now, Steiner was clearly on the ropes.
