The Flame Of Hope

Artist: Carrotwine - Song: Dark Side Of The Road

Like a blazing lantern in the everlasting night, Ulv touched down gently outside The Tundra, and may have been letting out her Resolve Flame-touched Reiatsu on purpose just so people would have a better day, but that wasn't something that was going to harm anyone. A bit more hope, a bit less anguish, and a person's life could change. If they were in a life-changing place. If not, it could just brighten the day. Both, were equally good from where Ulv was stood. And, then she walked in. Having timed it properly, Abalia would be doing some work in the Cafe before getting on to Vastime duties. And she wanted to see her friend now she could sort her head properly, before going to see Hayden again.

"Knock knock. I heard this place was owned by the most beautiful woman in Africa, and so obviously I had to come down and check that out, just to see if it was true or not" Ulv gave a bit of flattery, and a smile, just so that the effects of her flame weren't the only thing that she was giving out. There was more to live than just magic flame powers, after all. Demonica, of all people, had taught her that one.

Abalia naturally sensed the reiatsu as she worked in the Tundra, preparing for the morning's visitors, but she gave it only slight attention. Not because she dismissed it as a potential threat, but rather quite the opposite, that if it was genuinely a threat, she would be informed in relatively short order by the city. Still, there was something...familiar about it, and a touch comforting. She could have sworn in that moment she felt the scirocco brush across her face, but it was only a fleeting feeling, and the silver-haired maiden shook it off before making her way out into the cafe proper to greet her new guest.

“The most beautiful woman in Africa?” Abalia did not much care for those sorts of comments, but inwardly there was the faintest sense that something about this was more acceptable than most. Only faint, mind you, and she still hardly appreciated it. “I sincerely doubt this, ma'am, and even were it true I would rather not consider such a thing. Would you care for a meal, or a drink?”

This was still only a matter of business for Abalia, but in the back of her mind she did wonder who this woman was, exactly. She was clearly someone of import, though she could only assume that through her spiritual pressure and the way she carried herself. But there was something more, something unplaceable that nagged at Abalia's mind despite the woman's face being entirely unfamiliar.

Ulv smiled softly as Abalia, being Abalia, totally deadpanned the compliment and got down to business. It made Ulv smile and let out a soft laugh.
"You've not changed, huh? I always said that a beautiful flower needs to be admired, Abalia. Ahh, and you always refused me. Never letting me pamper you woman side, you are all business all the time. But then I guess I am a stranger so business is expected" Ulv exclaimed, shaking her head softly and holding out a bag for Abalia. "I know you are going to refuse this like you refuse everything nice I try to give you, but I have to at least try to repay you for the food you brought me when I wasn't doing so well" Ulv told Abalia, before going to find a seat.

Inside, there was some exquisite chocolates and a cute new dress for Abalia to wear. Casual wear, not formal, but still making her look good. And then Ulv looked to Abalia. A most, wolfish smile on her lips.

Song: The Steel Samurai - By: Turnabout Jazz Soul

As Abalia listened to this visitor's words, she could not fully suppress a sudden catch in her breath. This woman was saying things no one should have known, no one could have known, not without having been there. But only two people had been there, herself and a friend she had never been able to say farewell to. There were a thousand thoughts racing through her mind as she opened the bag, but only a single one as she saw the smile that crossed Ulv's face. There was not a single doubt in her mind of who she was speaking to, and yet she could not dare to look at the woman quite yet.

“...Yes, I do suppose I often avoid accepting such gifts. Do you suppose I should be more open to them? I think you would know all too well that I do not much tend to appreciate unsolicited giving toward myself. These things could go to someone far more in need...”

While she spoke, the silver-haired maiden made her way to the door of the Tundra, quietly changing the sign over from Open to Closed. She was a woman of duty, absolutely, but in this moment, duty toward a friend drew her more than this. It was a slow hour regardless, and this would take only a short time. As Abalia turned back to Ulv, there was, perhaps, the faintest hint of tears in her eyes. Tears? No, surely not. Merely a glimmer of happiness, a glint of confidence. That was all.

“But for you, I do suppose I could make an exception. Now tell me... Where have you been?”

Abalia's tone was chiding, motherly as always, and yet within it there was care and a tenderness that it was unlikely any had seen before. Any, that is, except for the dear friend to whom she now spoke.

"Accepting gifts is a different one. In this day and age people will expect a certain reaction to giving a gift. They will give you that gift to prompt that emotion. Others will give you gifts just to give you gifts because you deserve it, and you need to deal with who is who. Alternatively, you can take the Buddaa approach. Accept all the gifts given to you, with humble thanks. And then do with them what you want when you have them, since it is now yours. And fend off peole trying to get in your pants. I mean, I tried, and I failed real badly, so I think your pants just straight up don't exist" Ulv gave a giggle at that last bit, and then stood up when Abalia closed up the shop and turned to her.

"Dead. it's a really sad tale that I don't want to tell a friend on our reunion" So Ulv just stood up and gave Abalia a hug. Unlike Mirja hugs, which were kind of hard and not a lot to them since she had a slender figure, Ulv was warm and muscular. There was a feeling of peace in her hugs, and a feeling of Hope. She was inundated with the Resolve Flame such that she had it constantly on, at skin-level.

Were hugs simply the norm in this day and age..? It seemed someone or another was always wrapping their arms around Abalia these days... Though, in this instance at least, she could not say she minded too terribly. Returning the hug with no hesitation, she found a certain comfort in returning to the company of her first friend.

“Yes, well, you should certainly know that I tend to wear a skirt far more often, now shouldn't you? Pants are a bit too constricting, and when working from my position, any advantage is helpful.”

Of course, Abalia wished to say so much more, and it was likely she could speak for hours, if not days, simply catching up with... Oh, she supposed that was something worth asking, now wasn't it?

“Then I shall refrain from asking about the circumstances, at least for now. But you know me well enough, I should think, to know that I must tell you not to do so again. That is both an order as your superior in Vastime, and simply as your friend. And, though I will not inquire as to what happened, I must ask, do you go by a new name? Something tells me that you do. Call it an officer's intuition.”

Ulv's happiness went all down the drain at this moment because Abalia was stiff work persona while not at work. Maybe it wasn't a persona. Maybe it was just how she was and all of Ulv's interactions would simply deviate and filter to this point of strict and boring none-contact and just consise words to the point and then that was done. Must be a realy boring life to lead, but it wasn't exactly negative so she couldn't really do anything. Much as Ulv wanted to drown her in her Resolve Flame until the woman got the ability to smile.

"Superior doesn't work anymore because I am an unaffiliated civilian. Mirja died. She is dead. That's it, game over. There is no protocol for people inheriting the title of someone they claim to be. And besides, I met Hayden a while ago and we didn't get the best or receptions. So probably just gonna not join Vastime and see what the world has to offer" It was unnatural to see a vibrant and passionate woman like Ulv lose the spark of enjoyment. "And yea, Mirja died. I didn't want to confuse and upset people by stealing that name from her. I am not Mirja, I just am a body with her soul in it. Everything else about me is new. So yes, I am Ulv. And I shall leave you to your work. The Tundra was always busy in the mornings. People need coffee"

The sudden shift in Ulv's demeanor was enough to genuinely take Abalia off her guard, particularly considering her guard had not been “up” in its fullest sense in the first place. She had not intended to offend, far from it in fact, and it struck her that, even with her best attempt at humor, it almost assuredly had sounded almost entirely humorless. Perhaps this was what Mirja had meant at the time, that this cold exterior could only do so much. And yet, at the same time, what was she to do? To open herself to others was too great a risk, one that, in her position, was outright dangerous to take.

“You... I seem to have communicated poorly. I am sorry, I meant it only in jest. I would not wish to give you any orders in a setting such as this, even if you were still subordinate to me, and particularly not an order so...callous.”

Even as she apologized, it was clear that Abalia could not simply shed that icy shell of hers. And, of course, she could not, for it was not simply a wall constructed for the sake of her duty. The two were inextricably and forever linked, equally real aspects of who she was as a person. But at the same time there was undeniable regret in her eyes, not at who she was, but at the thought that it had harmed someone she well and truly cared for.

“Truth be told, I find that these days people come less and less. My presence is simply not as inviting as yours was, or even still is. I try, of course. You should know as well as any that I give my greatest effort when it comes to the good of others. But I do not have your cheer, M- Ulv. I never have. I am not some wounded woman who became an icy queen from past harm, who turned her back on emotions when they caused me too much grief. I have always been this way, for as long as I can remember.”

Though her tone had stayed even as she spoke, there was passion in her words, and a faint trembling that suggested not sadness, but energy, as if she were not merely stating this, but arguing it. She did not want Ulv to think her ungrateful, unhappy, unfulfilled with what she had done, and what she did do. Such a thought caused a pain in her heart that she had not felt in a great many years.

The Flame Of Hope

Artist: Carrotwine - Song: Dark Side Of The Road

"No, you communicated well enough. I just charged into this situation like a fool. Even when my Empathic Heart of Fire told me that you had not changed at all and were still the kind of woman that I always knew, I wanted to hope that being here in a capital of vibrancy and a man who called the Mantle Of Kings his own, even in this day" She shook her head and turned back to Abalia, a sad look in her face. These were the kinds of people that Ulv did not like. Not because of anything they had done, but because she couldn't help them. There was nothing to help.

"Were you a cold, wounded woman, I could help you, and together we could return to the glorious and beautiful world outside the door. But you aren't. You are just Abalia. Your world is crisp, orderly, gray and everything is in neat rows. Everyone does their duty and nobody falls out of lock-step. It is a good world for it's predictability. Nothing will hurt you here, nothing will surprise you, and your life will be one that you can see the entirety of from any point. It isn't because of anything, it is just who you want to be. And as such my powers are useless against you because there is no pain to soothe"

"While most people are not my, shifting prismatic shapes, riding a unicorn on top of a rainbow kind of world, a lot of them have more vibrancy and colour than you have ever allowed yourself to have, or probably ever will allow yourself to have. It is great for doing your duty and working with the greatest efficiency you can, but it does nothing to earn you people. Because people need something more in their life. They need light, they need dark, they need elation and they need despair to make that elation matter. There is none of that with you. it is just all gray. Neither one side nor the other. Simply, is"

Just Abalia.

Just who you want to be.

There was a dull pain within Abalia's chest, not unlike the hurt that came moments before the body fully realized the gravity of a wound. She stared at Ulv for a moment, then two, and it was as though any light in her eyes had simply been snuffed out. If there had been the faintest hint of a smile upon her lips, it was long gone now, replaced only with a thin, unhappy line. When she spoke, there was not a single trace of emotion within her voice, as if it had simply been wiped away entirely.

“Yes, I suppose that is the case. The people do not much wish to associate with someone so very cold, now do they? They wish for someone who might show them all the extremes life can contain, who can whisk them away to parts unknown, be it literally or metaphorically, and change their lives. They are not after some dull attendant of the law, who gives them little more than a smile and what support she can, who feels so very little outside of satisfaction at a job well done.”

The longer Abalia went on, the more weight seemed to fill the room, and seemed to loom behind her words. They were still passionless, still lacking in anything one could call energy. It was not as though a great fire had been lit inside her, far from it, in fact. Far more applicable would be an iceberg which had broken away from its glacier, and slowly but surely moved forward unperturbed. Her every word was all too clearly spoken with every bit of emotion Abalia could muster. And, perhaps, that simply made things all the sadder.

“You say things as if they are so very black and white. I am clearly not unhappy, and so I must be happy with this place, yes? Or if not that, content? To live in this never-changing quietude, where no matter the event I can scarcely conjure much more feeling for it than a faint self-approval, where my every action is taken for the good of bettering the lives of others.

“You are right, Ulv. The people of the world do need so much more than what I have to experience a happy life. They require those feelings I have never known, those joys and sorrows that, no matter what has occurred in my life, have never struck me for my own sake. I have cried for those I failed to save. I have smiled for those I brought happiness. Yet I have never truly felt what I suspect is happiness, nor what one would call sadness. I am but a shell who performs her duty not simply for its own sake, but in the knowledge that it is the only thing which brings me anything resembling those feelings.”

Abalia was not angry. She did not get angry when it came to herself. But it was clear from her tone that she considered Ulv's words all too incorrect, not simply a minor misstep but a grave error that had been made.

“I dare say that you were the first person I ever knew to make me feel something more than that. I have never had a friend before you. I would ask if I told you, if you remembered such a thing, but I suspect you already would have been able to tell that simply from who I am. And to say that what you brought me resembled everything I know of happiness would not be a lie. Yet here you are, now, saying that you can do nothing to help me, that I live in an empty world of my own choosing.”

Her eyes changed ever so slightly, then, and her lips seemed to tremble just the faintest bit. The silver-haired maiden's brow creased, her grip tightened upon nothing, and all at once Abalia turned away from Ulv entirely, looking instead toward one of the windows.

“And now, I think, you have brought me what I suspect is sadness.”
