TEN THOUSAND SWORDS

ERIKA MASAMUNE

The Language of Swords [PRIVATE/Henrex] 6EdIfMt

The spring afternoon was pleasant with a warm temperature and a small breeze. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and so the Shinigami saw this as her opportunity to escape into the serenity of the forest, she knew she had to meet someone today which would meet her in the forest eventually but until then the time was her's to use. The journey had taken an hour due to her not using shunpo or any form of enhancement as life always seemed to be in such a rush. Sometimes you had to take things slow and the young woman liked that.

Things had gotten so fast these days, maybe she was just getting old and wasn't keeping up with the times. That must be it. She was in a gigai at the moment, using it was more of a habit than on of necessity. These days people just got about as spirits and everything was fine. The young woman missed the twenty-first Century, after that everything changed and became stranger for her.

Erika finally sat down, her eyes drifted up to the clouds and her mistake was soon realised when she felt the still damp grass that was under the shade get her shorts all wet and her butt felt the cold liquid.

"Oh well.. What can I do?"

The Shinigami mused to herself, not minding this occurrence since it only sought to spice up her day. In fact she slide herself back so that she was laying in the wet grass which soaked into her top and cooled her skin. It made the warm day a little more enjoyable. She went back to her cloud gazing, making out the shapes of them. It was fun, despite the fact it brought back memories of someone she didn't want to think about. Someone who she had come to the conclusion was dead.

"Hmm. I wonder where he is? I even walked slow on my way here. So either they are sneaking around like a dishonourable coward... or they are yet to arrive."

She spoke loud enough for it to resound around the grove and let anyone nearby hear her statement. She was a mercenary but she didn't like any of this shady business a lot of them did and that's why she made it her rule to only listen to those that directly approached her.

Erika went back to waiting, her head resting against the hard wood of the tree behind her and her eyes closing to allow for a bit of meditation while she waited. It was a very peaceful day, shouldn't the woman enjoy some peace herself.

THE RAVEN'S HOMICIDAL FEATHERS

HENREX ASTILLON

The Language of Swords [PRIVATE/Henrex] 6EdIfMt

Erika Masamune. A woman that Henrex had only heard of in rumor, and in legend. Both of them were around during the Edo era, but strangely, never came across one another. But, it was her last name that was what struck his interest, along with what she was known for. Her expertise in the art of the sword. The name Masamune was a name that Henrex had known since he was a child. The legendary swordsmith of Japan, and the teacher of Muramasa, another one of Japan's legendary swordsmiths.

So, after hearing about both her name, and her skill -- Henrex wanted to test that.

It was time to dive into the shadows once more.

Donning the Garb of Tsukuyomi, Henrex set off for the Living World, far off where Erika would be. Resting in a tree, and allowing the shadows around him to take initiative, with his body fading out of sight. His eyes scanned over Karakura Forest, before his body shot through the green, bouncing from branch to branch, from tree to tree, not a single sound being made, nor a single leaf disturbed. The black-clad man soon found himself in the same clearing that Erika sat under. All movement immediately ceased, causing him to now be standing on the branch of the tree directly to the right of the swordswoman.

'Let's see how she reacts to a man who is both ninja and samurai.' He thought, before his body dropped from the timber, soon landing silently on the ground, his feet straight as an arrow to prevent too much damage to befall upon his legs, as well as to prevent any sound from coming from him. Henrex's hand softly drifted to his side, causing the ninjato that lay behind his waist to change shape, finalizing into a single katana. the fingers of his right hand slowly felt their way around the handle of the weapon, before his feet kicked off the ground, and he leaped into the air.

His body materialized, and his body zipped in towards Erika, before he executed the sword style that he knew that Erika would know. The blade of the sword slid from the sheath, before executing a single, massive slash at the sitting swordswoman. The classic sword style of the samurai, Iaido. The act of drawing a sword, cutting, and sheathing a sword in the fastest time possible. Many were taught this in order to keep duels quick, clean, and concise. Henrex could feel the small burn of nostalgia as he performed this action, so familiar and memorial to him.

There would be no telling whether the attack would cleave her in half, or -- the more hopefuly situation in Henrex's eyes -- her blocking the attack. He hoped that Erika would live up to both her skill, and the name of someone Henrex looked up to in life. The man who was said to have forged his blade in the heavens itself. His attack had purposefully been weakened, and slowed -- as to give her time to recognize the attack and go through proper defensive measures to protect herself. So, it was up to the Girl of Ten Thousand Swords to determine how this went.

TEN THOUSAND SWORDS

ERIKA MASAMUNE

The Language of Swords [PRIVATE/Henrex] 6EdIfMt

The of thread time being drawn out only made Erika more aware, more agitated and less relaxed. She became hypersensitive towards sound around her. She still appeared to be sleeping and resting in the grove but that was not the case as Henrex would find. Her eyes flickered open to look at the sky, noticing the figure falling to her right due to the small rays of light and her hyper-sensitive focus she played the part of still being asleep. The silence that came was unnerving in a way but she was timing him and the moment the silence was broken, the shade was forced into the light and Erika reacted in suit.

Beginning with the formation of a sword that formed halfway stabbed into the ground to counter the slash, hopefully leaving him taken back by the sudden appearance of a sword before she used shunpo and was on him quite quickly. The gigai dissipated, being a newer model than the original gigai that ejected the wearer while this one simply dispersed until reformed. In her standard attire the girl was on him in a matter of seconds, pouncing on him like a wild cat but mid-flight forming a small throwing knife to toss at Henrex to take his attention away for a moment so that she could work her next motion.

Henrex would have to dodge, catch or counter the knife. That was certain and Erika was going to take advantage of all three. The motion he would make would allow Erika to come and hook his arm swinging off it and using her flexible and acrobatic frame to twist around and use his superior weight to her advantage as an anchor. She never intended to flip him or throw him with this motion. The shinigami's legs snaked around his arms while his head was held tightly in between her thighs akin to her getting a shoulder ride off him and finally a knife was held against his throat - a small cut would make it evident to Henrex that she wasn't playing around.

"Who do you think you are? You jerk. Sneaking around and attacking me. Don't you have any honour or is it acceptable where you're from to attack women when they are alone?"

There was contempt in her voice, the tone sharp as the blade that was pressed against Henrex's throat. She really did miss the older days, when people had honour and instead it seemed these days were filled with a lack of respect and dishonour.

The weapons around the two of them disappeared except for the knife at his neck as they were no longer needed. Erika wanted to make sure that she kept this place clean in case she ended up on the ground or he thought about using her own weapons against her. It was a tactical move on her behalf but she was quite interested in the cloak he was wearing, assuming it had the concealing effect that prevented her from sensing his approach or else he wouldn't be very strong if he had such low energy.

THE LIVING TEMPEST

HENREX ASTILLON

The Language of Swords [PRIVATE/Henrex] 6EdIfMt

The way that Erika countered said attack was something that he was, initially, surprised at. He wasn't surprised at the appearance of a sword, or the way that she used it. But, Henrex had been prepared for something like this. As her sword made contact with his own, his body twisted, and his feet kicked down, slamming the weapon into the ground, before launching himself into the air, his wings unfurling as he soon took a permanent place within the sky. As the girl lunged at him, Henrex banked to the left to move, and avoided both the knife, and the girl that launched at him.

So, while she did speak, her words did not fall on deaf ears. Henrex heard what she said, and to that, he smiled faintly before he landed, his wings curling back into his back, and he snapped his fingers, which caused his sword to shoot from the earthy grave it had dug itself into, before flying into Henrex's hand, to which he sheathed his sword -- with the blade reforming itself to be a ninjato once more. Taking a deep breath, before approaching the swordswoman, Henrex soon looked at her, before his eyes narrowed slightly.

"A woman with a reputable sword skill, as well as taking the name from the world's greatest swordsmith? As a man who both has an extremely reputable skill in kenjutsu, as well as meeting one of Masamune-san's students, I felt like I had to test you in those aspects. I intentionally weakened and slowed my strike so that I wouldn't potentially end up cleaving you in half on accident." He explained, his fingers softly gripping around the handle of the ninjato at his side that was his Zanpakuto. His voice was deep, but gentle. It was as if an older sibling was talking to a younger one.

"Because if you were just using Masamune's name to boost your ego or reputation..." He trailed off, his eyes closing full, before his fingers locked around the handle of his ninjato, the appendages turning white from the grip that he had.

"I would not have allowed you to live, disgracing his name."

His eyes soon softened, and his hand loosened. A small smile broke out onto the ninja's face, before chuckling to himself for a moment, calming himself soon after and taking a deep breath.

"Henrex Astillon, nice to finally meet you, Erika Masamune. I have a feeling...we can learn quite a lot from one another." He said, bending down to bow to her.

After hearing her talk about the old ways, he figured perhaps he should greet her in the old ways. Standing straight quickly after, Henrex's other hand reached up to the cloak that he wore, undoing the buttons, and taking off the supernatural, and heavily modified object. Folding it in two, and throwing it over his shoulder, Erika would now clearly be able to see the glowing white kanji that lay on the back of the Garb of Tsukuyomi.

"After all, that's also why I came out here. I want to learn from you, and hopefully, you'll want to learn from me."

TEN THOUSAND SWORDS

ERIKA MASAMUNE

The Language of Swords [PRIVATE/Henrex] 6EdIfMt

He had wings. HE HAD WINGS! Erika's mind drifted to the legends of Tengu from Shintoism at this sight, as it appeared he had a motif from them perhaps it wouldn't be the first time someone had possessed powers that related to a theme. She learnt that in the past after all, one of her own sword shared the name of Muramasa's sword Juuchi Yosamu from Japan's culture.

With the avian's return to solid ground Erika's knife disappeared and faded away. She observed Henrex's own use of his zanpakuto which was similar to her own, he seemed to be able to alter its properties and form although she was curious if it could create numerous copies and variants like Katanakaji could which would be interesting for Erika to learn.

However this fascination with his zanpakuto was not the reason that the man returned to solid ground, she was a little angry though when he mentioned her in such a way. Taking a person's name simply to make yourself gain more reputation or increase one's ego was a disgusting act in Erika's opinion, she only sought the swordmaster's name to remind her of her goal, to give her a purpose to be better than the person who wielded that name.

"I might have to cut down my would-be assassin if he dared mock me like that again, to insinuate that I would take a name - especially one that came from Masamune himself as an act of self-absorbed arrogance or even for the sake of improving my reputation!"

There was a noticeable change in his attitude, a more peaceful and soft personality there was even a smile and the image that this was a completely different person that was threatening her only a few moments ago.

How strange.. He is a pretty queer one

It was hard for her to reciprocate in kind with a bow when Henrex did his own, since he seemed to be an assassin who she never really got along with. Their lack of general etiquette in combat was sickening although she fell into line and showed him the same gesture.

"Learn from each other? I'd like to know what exactly you are Henrex Astillon, you're clearly stronger than me so it's not like you need my services to fight or defend for you."

The shinigami laid against the tree she was against before he attacked her again, the water once again saturating her clothes. While she appeared to be sleeping she was really relaxing her mind to focus on the situation and gestured for Henrex to sit across from her this seemed like it was going to be a long day.

DARK WINGS, DARK WORDS

HENREX ASTILLON

The Language of Swords [PRIVATE/Henrex] 6EdIfMt

As far as Henrex could tell, Erika had a lot to ask about him. Her look of shock when his wings unfurled, and his actions with his sword caused him to smile softly once again. But, the smile was soon cut short when her response to his statement of hindsight was given. His eyes widened in shock, not expecting the girl to lash out like she had, especially something that he had said in hindsight, of all things. But, as the words repeated throughout his head, he soon was able to understand her misplaced fury.

"I'm sorry, you must have misunderstood. I did not ever mean this as a direct insult to you, or meant to be an accusation. I was saying that if you were, which are not -- as my test proved that -- I would do that. I will not allow someone to use a name like Masamune-san's to boost their arrogance." He explained, his hands moving from his side absentmindedly as he spoke.

And then, her next series of questions were what made Henrex's eyebrow raise. This was something that was...somewhat new. He hadn't really gotten many people asking him about his what he was. Well, that would be a somewhat complicated thing to talk about. But, she asked, and he would deliver. He silently walked over to where the girl sat, before doing a mixture of sitting an kneeling.

"I am...a collective mess of things. I have avian physiology, which grants me my wings, and my strange body structure. As for race, I am a Shinigami and a Demon. A lot of people prefer to divert to the nickname that Hybrids like me have gained -- freak, impure...the list goes on and on." He said quietly, before sighing heavily as he named off the insults that people had either given him directly, or said behind his back.

"I was born a samurai, but I was also trained as a ninja, can't forget that." He mumbled, another sigh leaving his lips as he knelt on the ground, feeling his knees and ankles getting soaked from the ground, but soon drying due to the powers of his Zanpakuto. While he had only just began on what exactly the man Henrex Astillon was, he had to give Erika some room to breathe, process, think, and respond.

TEN THOUSAND SWORDS

ERIKA MASAMUNE

The Language of Swords [PRIVATE/Henrex] 6EdIfMt

The young woman went a little red as he told her she must've misunderstood, which caused her to look a little awkward for a moment before she quickly recovered and sighed at her own mistake. She hated to make mistakes and to completely misunderstand someone's words could only bring her a little bit of shame.

"I'm sorry. I did indeed misunderstand I apologise for my absentmindedness."

She looked up with her golden gaze and and fidgeted with her fingers from the still lingering embarrassment she felt towards her accidental misinterpretation. It seemed that she made a second error, at the time she hadn't realised what she spoke and thought it to be something completely different. How absentminded of her today was simply not her day at all. First she gets attacked, then she misinterprets something, only for her to say the wrong thing. Oh this was a terrible day indeed.

"I'm sorry. Very sorry, I didn't mean to ask that. I thought I was asking for why you came her, not what you are. Please forgive my foolish mistake and any offence I might have caused you with my question."

It took only a moment for the girl to be on her feet and bowing apologetically, hoping for this man's forgiveness even though he did attack her moments ago but that was a test so really it was justified in her eyes, especially since he knew someone that was taught by Masamune himself, Erika was born to late for that honour something she couldn't help feel a little bit of envy towards.

They were friends here though now, or at least on their way towards it and Erika didn't want to ruin it with such trivial things. She sat back down next to him, and crossed her legs as she laid back into the tree. A little casually but she thought that if she was to serious then he might take offence to it from her earlier mistakes so she wanted to try and stay less rigid towards the young man. When Henrex was done she gently rubbed his back, it was something she had once upon a time - no not avian physiology, it was someone to comfort you.

She did so out of concern that listing off all those things might've made him upset, or uneasy or both! All because she spoke the wrong thing. She did frown a little at the comment of being both a samurai and a ninja, her lips moving before she could stop herself.

"You can't be both though... a samurai conducts themselves with honour and do not deceive while a ninja is an assassin that hides in the shadows and kills without even the honour to name himself. How in any way, shape or form could they both be able to co-exist in the same person?"

She was baffled, confused and it took her a moment to remember she was trying to ease the tensions and quickly went to apologise.

"I'm sorry.. again, it just... slipped out."

Again a look of shame crossed her face at how he must be thinking of her, a little child unable to conduct herself properly. Today really was not Erika's day.

DARK WINGS, DARK WORDS

HENREX ASTILLON

The Language of Swords [PRIVATE/Henrex] 6EdIfMt

It was quite the amusing situation, in Henrex's mind. They were both making multiple mistakes that was causing embarrassment for the two. However, it also presented something else to them -- in a strange way, it caused them to bond with one another. So, when Erika apologized for the misinterpretation of the subject of using Masamune's name, Henrex simply shook his head, waving his hand dismissively. It wasn't something that was major, and it need not be apologized for.

Then, Erika apologized once more, saying that asking him what he was had not been the intended question, instead meaning to ask why he was here. Well, to Henrex, it didn't matter either way. Both questions provided more information about him, although only one of them were able to grant information as to his reasoning to why he was there. As this happened, Henrex could see that she was acting more casually around him, leaning against the tree that she was right next to, to which Henrex simply acknowledged, not really paying it much of mind. It wasn't something major.

And then, he felt something warm on his back after he had finished speaking, causing his eyes to widen in shock from the sudden feeling, before the two orbs shot her direction, seeing that she was...rubbing his back. And then, after he had made his statement about being both samurai and ninja, her response was not something that was surprising. Many people, especially those who were samurai in the Edo era, were under the impression, due to the type of jobs that ninja were commonly hired for. It wasn't surprising that she had come to that conclusion about him. So, the next words that Henrex would speak were going to correct that.

"It's not a surprise that people come to that conclusion about us." He said, his arms acting as supports as he leaned back. "While killing is a last resort most of the time, we are considered to be faceless, assassins without honor. We focus on gathering information, and espionage."

Henrex let out a soft sigh, before sitting up straight, his shoulders raising slightly to shrug as his hand drifted to his side, pulling out a shuriken, a common weapon among the ninja. He slid the throwing star between his fingers, feeling the cold steel send shivers through his hands.

"While some of the shinobi may not follow a code of conduct, the group that I trained with most certainly did." He said, his voice rough, as if his throat were made of sandpaper. "Don't be sorry, it's a common misconception."

But, as his mind recollected on her statement, he smiled briefly of her questioning as to how the two could coincide as one. He remembered when he had questioned that very same thing, so many years ago. As a result of this, the male let out a soft chuckle, before turning his head towards Erika.

"I asked that question many times myself." He said. "The ways of the ninja and the samurai way are very similar, actually. Although the ninja are more focused on tactics and fluidity, rather than brute strength."

Then, an idea came to him. His eyes lit up at the realization, and Henrex turned to Erika in his full, before offering her a proposition.

"Would you like to learn the ways of the ninja? I could teach you new ways to utilize your skills, and you could teach me new ways to utilize mine. What do you think?"

TEN THOUSAND SWORDS

ERIKA MASAMUNE

The Language of Swords [PRIVATE/Henrex] 6EdIfMt

She felt a little better, although was confused as to why he would be so nonchalant about it. Was he not offended by her actions? She really did live in a strange world which had changed so much in the hundreds of years she existed.

I'm so old... Maybe I'm just being left behind in the world. This guy is so strange, I wonder what Tsubine would think of him? This strange man.

Erika's face looked thoughtful, as he explained the nature of shinobi. She still didn't like the way they conducted themselves, espionage took all the honour out of warfare the wars proved that to her. All that mattered these days was victory, not how it was obtained. Despite this Erika supposed she couldn't judge someone purely by the cover. She should at least open the book and read a few pages and so she returned to leaning against the tree with her hands resting on her lap.

"You are offering me... teachings of a Ninja? I don't know what to say."

Something like this offer had never been offered to her, she felt her mouth go to speak and decline which she quickly stopped and silenced. She had to think about this. There was no way Erika was going to make another embarrassing mistake from not thinking. There would be a drawn out silence as she thought, it went against her code of conduct or did it? It was simply her learning about it. She wasn't actually being forced to use these skills dishonourably.

She had to come to the possibility that maybe she was wrong. Just maybe Erika's own philosophy was flawed and should change a little or loosen up. The more she contemplated it the more she thought towards the "yes" side of the scale. Finally she sighed and looked towards Henrex, it wouldn't be hard for him to read the answer off her face before she said it.

"My teacher taught me to always be open-minded though so I should at least try and I would happily try to teach you in whatever way I can"

She stood up and walked towards the sunlit area, not in the shade and turned to try and get the warmth from the day to dry off her back a little. Realistically she could do it with kido but she liked the natural way more instead of using shortcuts, her hand slipped behind her back and she stood there waiting for Henrex.

"Would you like to lead? It was your idea after all and I've never taught anyone before."

THE LIVING TEMPEST

HENREX ASTILLON

The Language of Swords [PRIVATE/Henrex] 6EdIfMt

Henrex took a deep breath as he felt his words float through the air, setting within the surroundings. The teachings of the ninja. It was something that he never thought he would see himself giving to others, as he never felt that he fit the role of a teacher, much less a ninja grandmaster. But, as the knowledge set in that Soke was dying, he knew that it was only a matter of time before the rest of them did too. A slight look of worry passed over Henrex's face, afraid that the most recent time that he saw Soke...would be the last.

But, he was quickly taken out of that trance with the response that Erika gave him. It wasn't surprising that she would be, well, surprised about the sudden offer. So, a small smile came to Henrex's face as she contemplated the decision. Again, it wasn't a surprise that she needed that time, especially to receive the teachings of a ninja. However, Henrex had faith that she would use them in ways that she would continue to uphold her honor, while still having that knowledge with her. He even was someone who continued to follow the Way, even if he was two things that should not have mixed.

Therefore, the next words that Erika said, as well as her expression would given Henrex his answer.
