Artist: Falkkone (Metal Cover) - Song: You Say Run - Word Count: 1,213

Three weeks time had flown by rather quickly for the young man who had made his temporary home Vastime, no one seemed to look at him oddly anymore as he walked the streets, or when he put out his own form of justice to those that crossed the line. It was a good feeling to feel like he belonged, even if he didn't share the Vastime's conqueror mentality, he still respected their military advancements, and their gathering of knowledge on the subjects. He had spent so much time in the training fields and in the libraries that one could assume that he lived there, which was fine by him because his thirst to become stronger so as to protect others outweighed any mocking he received. That thirst for strength today had taken him to a small hole in the wall library that was deep within the confines of Vastime, he had only been here a few times, and each time they had some new tome or some new manual for him to read. Today was no different, as upon arrival the librarian smiled warmly, and waved him over to their "just got this" section. They knew him by name and welcomed him warmly as they thought of the pursuit of knowledge much like he did.

After spending a good half an hour rummaging through the newest acquisitions he managed to grab a couple manuals on fencing and ancient North African swordsmanship (which to be honest he was actually quite excited to read about). He went up to the front desk, was greeted warmly, and told to bring the books back in the condition that he had taken them from the library in. They knew he would, but it was procedure, and Steiner thanked them before stuffing the books in his backpack and making his way out of the library into the morning street. As he looked about at the already packed streets, Steiner let out a long sigh as he stretched his hands to the sky, and began to make his way back to his camping site which was a rather far way away, but he viewed this as exercise so he didn't really mind it. As he was walking through the crowd of citizens, making sure as to not bump into anyone, and being a polite as he possibly could, he heard a young lady begin to shout.

Steiner looked around for the source of the noise and noticed across the street a frantic young woman shouting something about a purse while pointing down the path to what looked like a faint image on the horizon. The image was booking it and Steiner decided that since no one was doing anything to stop it, he was going to have to. He ran through the crowd, shoving people out of his way, and earning a few death glares in the process as he emerged on the empty path the lady was pointing down. He began to use his full speed combined, driving himself through the empty streets as fast as a powerless human could run, and to be honest Steiner could run pretty fast for a powerless human. He hopped over urns full of goods being prepped for markets like an Olympic runner, ran along walls much like in a kung fu movie to dodge carts, and spun around random pedestrians as they were making their way to work much like a pro-basketball player cutting through a solid defense. In essence, Steiner was focused on getting the purse back, and he wasn't going to allow the few obstacles in his way to stop him from doing just that.

The thief looked back and Steiner could see the fear in his eyes as he realized that he was being chased down by him, after all thievery in Vastime was pretty big, and would definitely mean some time in prison if he got caught. He desperately would throw stuff to the ground to create more obstacles, knocking over carts, and goods much to the dismay of people trying to set up things for the rest of their day on the town. Steiner leaped over it, much like he had done before, and performed feats of acrobatics to continue to gain distance on the villain who was now beginning to think of what he would do if the young man caught up to him at this point. The thief rounded a corner, probably trying to ditch Steiner by ducking into some shop or something around the corner, and out of his sight. Steiner, however had another gear and tapped into it as he rounded the corner with every bit of ferocity as he had been running at for this whole chase.

And in that recklessness to get the purse back and bring it back to the young woman, Steiner Franz ran head first into a young woman who was walking down the path herself, and fell hard on to his back, hitting his head in the process. Steiner groaned as he lay on the floor, momentarily looking up to see a pretty young woman with white hair, and a hint of red if he looked closely. Steiner looked past her and saw that Vastime authorities had already grabbed the man and were "roughing him up" so to speak. He let out another groan and stood up, cleaning himself off, and looking at the young woman in front of him with concern in his eyes. He examined her for injury, using all of his research on anatomy that Mirja had told him to study to see if there were any vital points that had been injured during their collision. "Are you alright, miss? I didn't mean to run into you like that! I was just pursuing that guy because he stole a young woman's purse...", Steiner said as he pointed at the thief who was now way down the path being dragged by one of the officers, while the other went through a back alley to take the purse back to the young woman.

He looked into her eyes for a moment, thinking of how mad she must be at him for running into her like this while he was trying to recklessly chase some bad guy through the streets. Still, she oddly reminded him of someone that he saw when he was a member of the Vanguard, and he just couldn't place his finger on who she was or if he had truly ever seen her before. "Hey, I know this is a stupid question for some random guy, especially one who ran into you like a few moments ago, but...are you a member of the Vanguard by chance? You look really familiar is all.", Steiner asked, his curiosity getting the better of him, as he looked her over again to make sure she was okay. He decided just in case he would give her some of his healing salve that he had bought off the market a few days back, and reached into his backpacks side pocket procuring it. "Here you go. Just apply this to any place that is injured, alright?", Steiner said with a grin on his face. Hopefully he wasn't about to be yelled at, or hit due to his recklessness earlier.

ENTER THE DEPTHS

Artist: N/A - Song: N/A - Word Count: 530

Another day and still, still Chifuyu was in Vastime. Some force must be keeping her or something since she would very much like to go back to Japan. Nevertheless this day would not be wasted, she headed towards the market. If she was going to be here for a little bit longer than she'd also need to feed herself still. The red in her hair was hidden, or removed where she could, the hair being caused from the mutations within her soul. Chifuyu's duty was done here but nevertheless she would stay for one more night before leaving tomorrow to return to Japan. Arriving in the market the amount of activity was overwhelming.

She must've stood there for a minute or two, blankly looking around for a moment before finally resuming her activities. She walked around thinking hard about what she wanted to buy, even though she could realistically use the Yuudeshi wealth and buy everything within a fifty metre radius and still not even break the bank although that was very stupid and unnecessary she could still easily do it. Chifuyu moved on, picking out a snack to eat on the way since everyone needs to keep their strength up and it was very important to eat healthy so she got the simple protein bar.

Walking down the street Chifuyu was to preoccupied to take notice of the sounds of a chase that was emanating from right in front of her and needless to say when she saw a person run in front of her and then use a high-speed movement she was expecting the other chaser to do just that too. Well nope, there was a sound of a crash and Chifuyu was thrown off-balance with a total stranger laying in front of her in much the same condition. Chifuyu however wasn't damaged, it'd take more than that to hurt her.

Nevertheless her red hair had made itself pronounced with her hair messed up from the collision and her clothes were just a little dirty. She stood up and began to dust herself off, trying to get rid of as much of the dirt as she could. Before looking at Steiner quickly trying to justify himself, pointing out the thief and explaining that he was trying to be a hero and follow all the justice and ideas with left Chifuyu wondering why on earth he could get involved in such business.

"Why are you trying to do law enforcement's job for them? Don't you think they'd be more capable of doing themselves? And yes I am from Vanguard. I am The Reagent's Shadow. Chifuyu Yuudeshi."

When he offered the salve she gestured that she didn't want it. Looking at Steiner her eyes were a little sharp, she wondered how much he knew about her and what he wanted. Studying him also for his actions with the woman and her purse, why would he charge in like he could do anything about it. She sensed he wasn't very impressive in strength and so why would he think he could do what the police could do themselves.

"Why am I doing...are you serious?", Steiner asked as she looked at him sharply, probably trying to judge his strength of character, and what sort of motives he had. She had confirmed that she was a member of the Vanguard and from her title, he felt that she must be a very distinguished member. So why hadn't she stopped the thief then and why was he judging him so seriously for trying to do as most Vanguard did, fight evil no matter how petty of an evil it was. Even as a former member he remembered the pep talks from his instructors about always representing the Vanguard with pride and always helping the little guy out, it had stuck with him, and even though leadership had changed he knew those core ideals would never change. Or had they? Staring at Chifuyu he wondered just how things had become over the last year since his exit and wondered just how bad things had gotten ever since Hayden had taken control from Azure after he died.

"Because it was the right thing to do? Isn't that something they still teach to Vanguard personnel? Always look to represent the Vanguard in the best way and always fight evil no matter how small it is? Isn't your job to protect the world and fight the good fight? I swear if Azure was still around and he saw someone questioning a former Vanguard on why he was doing the right thing...he might flip his shit. Then again, he might not...I only met him once when I had powers.", Steiner went on as he put away the salve that he had tried to give her. He wondered just what was up with this girl, she was a high ranking member of the Vanguard, but didn't understand why he had done this, and it confused him. Was this a Hayden thing or a her thing? He looked her over again and tried his best to place the face with a name of this particular person, maybe she was a recruit that had came after he left, or a recluse of sorts that he only had vaguely seen before? No, he had seen this young woman before, but he just couldn't quite place it.

"Besides, what if law enforcement hadn't been around. Should we just sit by and watch the guy run off with a ladies purse? That's everything she has, credit cards, cash, her identity, and any personal information she has in that purse. Worst case scenario is the lady has to go file a report, cancel all her cards, put her life on hold, and spend months within the system waiting for answers that might never show up. And all because no one did anything. Luckily the authorities were here, but if they weren't, and I had just decided to stand still and be another face in the crowd, not paying attention to a cry for help, then everything she had worked for would be lost for who knows how long. If it ever came back at all...", Steiner was giving her a lecture at this point. Maybe it was his time spent with the Wolf that had made him this way, but he felt that questioning heroism was just a tad bit ridiculous. She had told him what would happen to him if he kept walking this path, but he was willing to do it because somebody out there needed to. The world needed heroes and while the big ones were fighting wars against the darkness, Steiner would fight wars against the bits and pieces that looked to prey on the weak. At least until he was strong enough to fight the darkness side by side with them.

But would he ever be strong enough to fight with them, he didn't really know, but he assumed that he was making some progress as he was getting stronger every day. Though his powers still hadn't manifested. "I'm sorry for giving you a lecture. You probably don't want to hear some 'heroic speech' from a powerless human like myself, but it doesn't make it any less true. What we do defines who we are...we can either do nothing when evil comes knocking or we can face it and do something about it. At least...that is what I think.", Steiner had continued to look into her eyes, unblinking, and unmoving like a heavy stone in a turbulent sea. She could stare at him as sharply as she wanted, all she would see was his desire to do the right thing, no matter the obstacle.

ENTER THE DEPTHS

She wasn't expecting this. He seemed to be one of those people that just needed to open their mouth, speak about the justice and goodness of the world. A childish dream that is a fantasy, an illusion that lead the naive to their doom. How foolish can one be as to believe such a load of horseshit! Chifuyu listened as he spoke to her; criticising her for her idleness, making her out to be the one in the wrong. He even used Azure against her, clearly he didn't understand what he had done but the Yuudeshi certainly felt the blow. It stung and she was angry for it, he had the nerve to use Azure as a reference after meeting him once!? Steiner would likely see her glare at that mention, her teeth closed around her lip and bit it while her fists clenched ready to beat him into the ground.

Self-Control... don't slap him, especially while the police were here a few moments ago. I'm not going to hit him, definitely not. I'm perfectly happy at the moment.

Keeping herself from slapping him was hard work but she stood there and let him take shots at her, when the young man was finally finished. Well that was the time to slap him, he'd feel her hand strike him with enough force to leave a bright red mark on his cheek although not at her full strength which could easily have sent him a few metres away at his level of power.

"First and foremost, don't you ever speak about Azure like you were best buddies with him especially when you meet him only once. Secondly, look at you, all wannabe hero who doesn't use that head of his. Sometimes doing nothing is the best call, for example in this situation, there we authorities nearby, there were people who's job it was to take them in not very far from them. You however had to make a bad situation worse with your blind quest for recognition of being a hero, you causing him to panic, causing him to cause more damage to the street as he ran up it and doing some yourself which could've been mitigated."

Chifuyu's hands grabbed Steiner's shoulder and pushed him out and turned him roughly so he could see the chaos his little stunt left in its wake. Produce, materials and people's living was everywhere. Some stalls were damaged and other's were broken from the ruckus.

"Tell me... is this what a Hero's supposed to do. I think minimising the damage is more important that bursting in headfirst and doing what you just did. Your narrow scope of understanding the consequences of your actions have no cost those people more than what they would otherwise have lost if you didn't chase him down."

Staring daggers at Steiner she dared him to try and lecture her again, to rebut and counter her arguments.

Artist: Rok Nardin - Song: The Last Stand - Word Count: 1,136

When he had began his tirade over what was right and what is wrong, he had expected a slap, and he had expected things to hurt. His life was that of someone that did what they had to do, protected everyone that he could, and done what he could with what he had to make sure that a person's life was never too difficult for them to live. When the slap had hit him, Steiner didn't reel, and instead his face turned to the side for a second, and he looked to the opposite side of the street where people had now turned to see the scene that was unfolding. People were seemingly interested in what this current scuffle looked like and Steiner gave them a slight smile as to tell them "everything was alright", except it really wasn't. Steiner didn't have any ill will against Chifuyu and instead turned to look her dead in her eyes, she was glaring back, but all she would see was pity. It was if she hadn't listened to a word that he had said and instead had been blindsided by what he had said about Azure.

His reference had not been wrong nor used in a manner that spoke ill of Azure, yet her reaction told him something about the current situation that was playing out. As he listened to her, not interrupting her as to give her the due diligence, and even allowing her to turn him around. She continued to speak about damage control and how important it was to think before one acted, but all the while Steiner couldn't help, but feel that he had wounded her a bit there. He felt conflict inside of him about what was going on. On one hand he wanted to tell her off, to tell her that everything she said was off, and that she didn't sound like a hero at all, more like some grunt waiting for orders and not somebody looking out for the people. But a part of him felt for her. She had probably worked with Azure closely as her rank dignified that and he could tell that somewhere deep down that wound was very much still open, then again would a wound like that ever actually heal? He knew his sure hadn't.

"He must have meant a lot to you...he meant a lot to me too. I joined the Vanguard because I looked up to him, I wanted to be like him, and protect people across the world...I wanted to be a hero.", Steiner said solemnly as he looked at the damages that had been incurred during the chase before turning to look at Chifuyu again, more pity would grace her eyes. "He was a man of strong principals and he would have solved this without any problem...he would have saved the day in a blink of an eye. That's what people with power can do...no damage, no risk...so easy.", Steiner said as he took a deep breath, reminding himself to help in whatever way he could to repair the damages that were caused by this. It would take some time, but in a way this was also training, and it was also something that a hero would do. As Mirja had said, he would have to live with the mistakes he made, but more importantly he would have to work to fix the damages that would follow those mistakes. It was his duty as a hero to do so and it wasn't to be taken lightly.

"In a world where people have the power to do things, most just sit in inaction as the little guy gets screwed. Sure, I may be responsible for the damages that have been incurred here today, but without me chasing him he would have never ran into the authorities in the first place...he would have never tried to hide and instead come face to face with the people he was trying to avoid. He would have gotten away, sure these people wouldn't have suffered, but the young woman would have. But just because the damages don't look good...and these people have suffered a loss doesn't mean you turn a blind eye to it and ignore it.", Steiner's eyes were strong and his intentions were true, if she dared him to lecture her, then so be it! She would get a lecture and it would be a firm one. "You're right though, I barely knew Azure, but I knew what he stood for, and why he was looked up to. If he were a powerless human like myself, do you think he would have sat there and watched a thief steal from a young lady? Do you honestly think he would have stood there calculating the damage, thinking of all the possible outcomes, and potential mishaps that could occur? Do you actually believe the shit you are spewing is what I'm asking? What does being a hero mean to you? Because being a hero means to me you stop evil, you fight the fight no one wants to fight, and sometimes you lose, but you learn from those losses.", Steiner stated looking at her dead in the eyes, he was stepping up to her now, challenging her. He didn't care if she had powers, he didn't care if she judged him poorly, or told him to not refer to Azure in such a way.

"If no one does anything what happens in the end? You can calculate and think about all the possible damage that a fire in a building causes, but there are still people burning alive in that building...do you just leave them there to burn or do you forget the calculations and jump into the fire. Every second counts and not all of us have super human powers as a crutch to rely on...I do my best with what I have because I believe that this world needs people to help the defenseless. If not someone with powers then someone without, if I had what you had...I would have stopped this without a seconds notice, there would be no thought...the man would be apprehended and no damage would have been caused. I don't have that luxury...I only have the tools that I have and I have to do what I have to do with them to help the people who need to be helped.", Steiner finished his statement with a stern glance at the young woman who had scorned him a moment ago. Her inaction spoke audibly louder than his own action. It wasn't like he hadn't thought about damages, that is why he had leaped out of the way, spun out of the way, and moved as he had to avoid causing any damage.

"The bad guys don't play fair, young lady. But just because they do damage doesn't mean you don't act...its even more reason for you to act.", Steiner stated as he continued to stare directly into her eyes.

ENTER THE DEPTHS

Artist: N/A - Song: N/A - Word Count: 532

Following that sharp sound that seemed to make the entire street stop producing background noise Chifuyu hadn't even realised that she had gotten a crowd. Her glaring eyes were focused on Steiner's, as if daring him to do something, to fight her or to try and assert his point. He did indeed want to push his point onto the Yuudeshi and instead of backing down he was going to try and make her see his side. How annoying.

The pity in his eyes got on her nerves, why should he pity her? He didn't even know her and if he did it wasn't by personal relationships that he should've known. Realistically Chifuyu should be the one to feel pity for him, a man with heroic ideals and beliefs who has no powers. In a world such as this what difference did this little man hope to accomplish with no enhancements whatsoever. This childish belief and desire! This stupid idea of being a pillar to carry the world was all nonsense. Such ideas killed Azure, such ideas lead her down to the path she is at now! What did she owe by giving her entire life to this world? Why does she have to hold the troubles of people, hadn't she suffered enough already?

An unknown virus that was affecting her on levels not even she understood was slowly corroding her, breaking her down to dust and this man still speaks of her owing the people, the people she sacrificed her safety for on both the Moon Massacre and Micronesia incursions, yet Steiner wanted to tell her that she should keep giving. Who in their right mind gives more than that? More than absolute and blind devotion to the Vanguard's cause! But now while sick her beliefs are questioned towards the Vanguard and people want to point out her lack of consideration for the people. Had she not done enough?

She wasn't going to speak those thoughts to Steiner however, his voice not stopping and his arguments kept on coming. He tore at her, pulling at the human emotions she had began to acquire and eventually he cracked her, her eyes began to weep. Not a conscious thing however and nor was she crying but tears began to roll down her face and fall.

"Please.... stop.... stop... stop it.. I'm sorry, you win... just leave me alone."

Turning around Chifuyu's hand came up to her face and touched her cheek, the wet feeling was foreign to her. She began to leave Steiner, walking the way she had came in both shock and anger that she had cried and not felt it. No warning to prevent her body from letting it out.

God Chifuyu, you're pathetic. Stop crying! Get over it I'm better than this... or at least I was.

She didn't walk very fast which left Steiner plenty of time to chase her down, probably feeling bad at this point for making her cry - even if the Yuudeshi deserved it or not - that hero side of him was likely going to make him violate the request Chifuyu had given him.

Artist: Fate Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works OST - Song: Sorrow - Word Count: 2,050

He had no expected such a sudden admittance of a loss and he didn't expect her to begin to cry before his very eyes either. In fact, most of today wasn't even going according to what he had originally planned to do for the day by himself. Steiner had originally planned for this day to be a day of study and practice, but it had now become a day that he had made a girl cry. Internally Steiner felt horrible and on the outside his facial expression matched that feeling completely as his eyes went wide in shock and he stood completely still as he stared at her as she turned away from him. He knew something was wrong, something more than what this argument had been about, but he couldn't place his finger on it. With a position such as hers maybe she was under a great deal of stress working for the Vanguard? Or perhaps she was having issues with something of a more personal nature? All in all, he felt horrible for making her feel the way she did, and looked down at himself in disappointment for what he had done only moments ago.

The people around him were judging him harshly, he could tell from the way they were looking at him as he glanced around, and he knew there was only one thing that he could do to make things right. So he did what any sensible man would do in this situation and ran in front of her to make her stop from walking away from him. For a moment, he would look at her with an odd glance and then without hesitation reared back and punched himself in the face. For a moment the crowd let out a gasp of confusion as to why the young man had done such a thing, but in Steiner's mind it made perfect sense for him to punish himself with a quick right to his face for making a young lady cry. "It is not my place to judge you.", Steiner stated as he felt his cheek, clearly realizing that he had socked himself real good at that point as a small drop of blood came from the side of his mouth.

"A year and a half ago I was captured by a group of Arrancar while I was on a routine patrol route ensuring the safety of the roads leading out of Karakura. I was captured due to my own rashness, I dove head first into trouble because a group of kids were on their way into town from some kind of field trip or something, and I decided to jump into action without backup to intercept the Arrancar. What followed was a few weeks of torture...they would beat me up, break me in ways that I could never fathom, and watch me struggle to cope with the pain that they had put me through. Every day after their beatings they would ask me to beg them for death and I would spit in their face...every damn day I did this, but they would heal me back up. They took some sick pleasure in having me be fresh for the next day of torture, they wanted me to feel whole, and then take it away again, and for a few weeks that would happen.", Steiner looked down, he still wasn't used to telling this story, and he didn't feel good talking about it in front of a total stranger, but he felt she needed to know more about him to understand him. "Eventually they grew bored with just beating me up and expanded their horizons by bringing back some poor soul they had found in the wastes...they would...", Steiner tried to get it out, but his breath had become ragged as he had tried to speak.

"They tortured people in front of me, chained me up so I could fucking watch as they murdered innocent people in front of me.", Steiner let it out, his own eyes clouding with tears as he looked dead straight toward her face. "They would beg for help...I would struggle in my chains, begging them to hurt me instead...to pick on someone who could at least fight back! But every time they would end them, every time they would grin at me, and tease me as I stood their drained. Eventually they grew bored of that though and decided their fun was at an end. So after killing my Ziamichi spirt and severing me from my source of power, they impaled me on my own sword.", Steiner said slowly as he wiped the tears from his eyes and let out a deep sigh before continuing on. "They didn't kill me there though...they wanted me to bleed out from the wound. They said I was too weak for a proper death and opted to let the vultures pick me dry instead of just ending me. Even in their last act they were ruthless, there was no mercy there. They left me to die in the wastes, alone, and dying from blood loss. I crawled for hours, calling out to anyone to save me, and no one came...not a single person came.", Steiner paused as he looked around as the crowd had gone silent that had originally been judging him poorly. They now instead saw the broken man that Steiner Franz was, what had once been a hero of honor was now nothing more than some left over scraps of what he had once been.

For a moment there was silence as Steiner tried to best focus himself on recanting the next part of his tale. She needed to know, she needed to understand, but more importantly, he needed to get this off his chest. He had never told a soul about this story and even his report to the Vanguard when he had recovered had not covered the trauma he had been through, it just told a bit, but not the whole thing. He felt it was better that way, he didn't want their pity, and he sure as hell didn't want some kind of medical pay for his services rendered. He had joined the Vanguard to be a hero and protect people, nothing more, nothing less. "Luckily some old lady with some kind of knowledge in herbal remedies patched me up...I ended up spending a few months on bed rest, but after my time with that was done I was back to business...I tried so hard to get back to business.", Steiner paused again as he leaned against a nearby store front, and brushed the hair from his eyes.

The tears continued to stream down his face as he took deep breaths, willing himself to continue on with this tale. "About a month in to being back, I was placed on desk duty due to the nature of my circumstances, and that is when the pain started. I went to medical and then they hit me with the bad news. I was dying. My soul had been damaged from the events that had transpired in the wastes...and in essence my soul was destroying my body due to some kind of 'imbalance' is what they said. In truth...they had no idea what was wrong with me, they just said something that sounded right, and even gave me the expiration date on everything that was me. Hell, they even explained that due to the nature of my 'illness' that they didn't even know if my soul would survive after I die...so...no afterlife for me!", Steiner tried his best to give her a mock smile as he said the last part. Just remembering all this was painful, but he kept on going.

"They said you have a few years, but don't do anything except sit at a desk, and file paperwork. They even tried to offer me severance pay so I wouldn't have to work...so I quit. I had joined to save people, to protect people, and now they didn't even want me on staff. After all, who wants to play around with damaged goods am I right? Maybe it was out of some kind of spite or something...some kind of frustration with the cards that I had been dealt that I just put everything into doing what I could for the little guy. I practiced heroism...some times for days I wouldn't sleep. I would just fight the good fight wherever I went and for a while that made things better, but that is when everything started to go out on me. I coughed up blood, my body parts began to go numb, and my skin began to visibly turn gray while black veins began to pulsate around my skin.", Steiner looked at himself in the window of the shop front, the reflection he saw was a complete wreck, and he wondered how he looked to the young Vanguard officer in front of him.

She probably judged him as some idiot for spilling these kind of beans in public, but Steiner wanted to explain himself to her. "The doctors told me that due to me over-exerting myself the ailment had accelerated. Every day I would look in the mirror and I would see...I would see...", more tears began to roll down his face, and he tried his best to conceal them by looking down. "I got depressed, I tried to cover myself up so I could go places, and I even made a bucket list to enjoy my last few weeks. I gave up, it was so fucking easy to just accept that I was gonna lose everything. I hid myself from people, I didn't interact with anyone because there was no reason to. I was basically a dead man walking and I didn't want to burden anyone with that knowledge. Eventually, I found myself in Russia, and a girl named Ritsuko...she made me realize that even though I was dying... I couldn't stop being me.", Steiner nodded as he looked up at Chifuyu. His eyes were red and his cheeks were flushed, but he still had more to tell.

"So, I came here, and as I began to believe that I could beat this thing...I started getting better. I met Mirja and though we don't see eye to eye on what heroism means she still taught me and ever since then I have striven to get better, to be better. Because I won't let anyone go through what I went through. But you are right though...I am reckless, I'm an idiot, and I've made you upset. And for that I deeply apologize. Still, if I had the choice to change what I did, and wait for back up to arrive while those Arrancar slaughtered those kids...I would still dive head first to stop them. I would repeat the same ordeals, I would struggle through all the depression, the pain, the medicine, and the overall self-loathing all over again to make sure that those kids have a future. That is what being a hero is, that is what Azure was, and that is what I am willing to put my all into being. Because the best way to honor his memory is to keep fighting the good fight and keep giving even if there is nothing left to give because you can't let evil win. You can't let yourself give up! You have to keep fighting because if you stop for even a second... that is when you let evil win and that is when you let yourself lose.", Steiner spoke the last bit with absolute conviction in his eyes and in his stance as he stood before Chifuyu.

He felt ridiculous for saying all that, but maybe his story would help her understand, and maybe even make her feel better in an odd way? He didn't know, he just felt like he had to explain his stupidity, and himself in a way that would make her understand his point of view. "I know I can be an idiot sometimes, but I just hope you can forgive me if I offended you.", he finished as he looked at her with a weak smile, his eyes were now brimming with confidence and a bit of ease. He felt better after getting that off his chest.

ENTER THE DEPTHS

Artist: N/A - Song: N/A - Word Count: 529

Chifuyu was annoyed when Steiner got in her way, who did he think he was? Trying to stop her from leaving this place while she was crying. She didn't want these people to see her vulnerable like this even if she didn't know anyone here. Her face quickly turned to scorn with this blockade, the only thing that stopped her putting her fist in his face and sending him a hundred or so metres in the direction she wanted to go was the fact he beat her to it.

The Shadow was more confused, why would someone strike themselves in a crowded place? Did he really think that punching himself in front of her would make it all better. That she'd laugh and get all chump-like with him just because he had a small sting on the side of his cheek. That was so stupid, she was ready to slap him. Send him flying into a nearby wall although he had began talking and Chifuyu wasn't that kind of rude person to beat the living out of a person while they were talking, she was respectful like that. Nevertheless she listened to the tale of Steiner's story, more because she was forced to initially listen due to him blocking the path and the crowd surrounding them.

However despite being forced to listen to this story Chifuyu felt pity for him, a man who was like Azure in so many ways. A man who wanted to be the hero, a hero complex which when shattered left a man struggling to keep themselves afloat. He had brought himself out of it however, how? How can being a hero mean so much to him that he is willing to continue even on his last legs! What can be so important to him that he would give his life away.

It took the individual with the apparently mastermind-level intellect to understand, it was the people around them. The crowd, the innocent and the vulnerable. It was those who needed to be protected... Was Chifuyu wrong to criticise him? She did make an educated guess towards the damage he caused but would all these people understand what he did was for the good of someone else. Did they hate him for the damage? They appeared to only now feel sad with the man. Weeping from the man's tale as Chifuyu still was.

"I'm.... I'm sorry.. I didn't know. I didn't realise it at the time.. You fight for the people who can't defend themselves. And even if it means that said people would lose some small items in the process of helping another person should justify it. I... I'm really sorry for behaving that way, could you forgive me?"

Speaking as best she could she went a little red with embarrassment, having all the people look at her and Steiner who moments ago made her cry but were both giving smiles. Small yes but it was evident there was a much lighter mood in the air and less chance Steiner would have the nearby walls painted red with his blood.

Artist: Fate Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works OST - Song: Sorrow - Word Count: 792

"What are you embarrassed for? For having an opinion on something? Its not like you are wrong either, but that doesn't mean either of us are right. I did do quite a bit of damage while trying to help that young lady and I will spend quite a while fixing that damage myself and working it off. I owe these people that much and I'm sure they will be more than willing to let me do so.", Steiner said as he looked at her with a grin on his face. She wasn't a bad person and she wasn't wrong about trying to make sure to minimize the damage, but sometimes that just wasn't an option, but that didn't mean she was in the wrong for thinking that way. He would have to be more careful in the future to avoid having something like this occur again, he wondered if somewhere out there in the wild blue yonder Snopy was laughing at him for doing exactly what he asked him not to do. He wondered if he would have to have another lecture again, the thought made him shiver, but he knew that Snopy only wanted him to get better so he didn't truly mind.

"I think I'm more in the wrong here, however...I believe I need to be forgiven for making you cry. I don't want to be the reason that a pretty girl cries, at least not out of anger or sadness. So...can you forgive an idiot like me?", Steiner asked as the embarrassment was now a two way street with both Chifuyu and Steiner sitting in their own respective cars. Still, he knew that something was off about the young lady in front of him, and he just couldn't put his finger on it and he really didn't want to pry into her personal life either. Still, it was the fact that she had started crying in the way she did, the reaction that she had given him, and the way she seemed to respond to his story. All of them added up to something potentially similar to what he had gone through, but he would save his questioning of her for another time because he didn't want to pry. That wasn't him and he knew that it was better to respect a woman's privacy than to demand answers of her. If she wanted to tell him, she would, and that was all that mattered.

"I do have one request though...if you will hear me out.", Steiner finally said, breaking the silence as the group dispersed, and began to walk away, going about their normal morning business. "I've been mulling over just what I can keep doing here at ground level. There is only so much I can do going around doing random acts of good in specific locations that I travel to...what I'm trying to say is...I want to rejoin the Vanguard...and work under you personally. I feel like you have a good head on your shoulders and I don't absolutely one hundred percent trust Hayden, so working under you would be the best possible route for me to get back into the Vanguard and really do some good on a global scale.", Steiner looked at her awkwardly as he finished stating his request and silently watched her facial reactions for any sort of movement of dismissal or lack of reaction at all. He feared she would turn him away due to his lack of powers, so he decided to jump first to make sure she understood that he would do everything in his power to be the best fighter he could.

"I know I'm powerless, but I can't just idly by while everyone else is fighting a war on a larger scale anymore. I have to help out as much as I can. I promise I will do whatever you ask of me and be there for you whenever you need me...so please say yes?", Steiner finished as he smiled as broadly as he could appearing as if he was almost begging to work for her. She seemed to understand him a bit now, so maybe she would understand why he wanted to step up to the big leagues again, and do some good on a major level. But there was more to it than that, the earlier feelings he got from her about something paining her that she didn't want to talk to him about, maybe he could help her if he worked for her. "I'll throw in a complimentary trip to a cafe?", Steiner said as he remembered that Mirja's cafe was nearby and maybe she would give him a discount if he begged enough seeing as how he didn't have much money on him anyway.

She wasn't fond of the idea for forgiving Steiner, not that she held it against him however the woman didn't want see there being anything to apologise for. Wasn't it his opinion that he voiced? If someone had to apologise because their opinion makes a few people cry then that's not the free world that Chifuyu wishes to keep alive. Nevertheless she could understand why he'd want it with his sense of chivalry and code of conduct and because of such she'd smile before nodding. At that moment her tears crystallised, cool right? Well she had an even better trick.

She made the now crystal tears gather and with the assistance of her own cells producing more mass from her hands she formed a deep blue sapphire, the blue sapphire represented a promise of honesty, loyalty, purity and trust and that is what Steiner was making to her it seems when he requested to be placed within the Vanguard under her command. She held the stone out to him and smiled, all evidence of her crying had faded and he would grab Steiner's hand to put the gorgeous stone in his hand before guiding it to close around the stone.

"And there's your promise then Steiner, a physical form of it. I shall arrange with Hayden to have you instated as my subordinate and tell him to keep his hands off you then. I always thought that powerless humans needed to be protected, they had no real power to defend themselves but you're different. You're an independent variable which doesn't conform. I would be happy to have you for that."

Now speaking of food the Yuudeshi hadn't realised that she was hungry, she must've only ate yesterday since she skipped breakfast so the thought of food and drink was pleasant for her. She'd smile and gesture for him to lead.

"Sure. Sounds good and I could use some food and I'd be interested in hearing more about you if you were to want to work with me in Vanguard"

Once on their way Chifuyu would recognise certain key features, she had a feeling this man was talking about a cafe she had visited in the recent history. You had to wonder if the wolf and Steiner were somehow together or if Steiner just coincidentally found Mirja's coffee shop. Once she got there and if her suspicions were true Chifuyu smirked.

"Huh.. I've been here, a few days ago actually with a strange wolf girl. Apparently she owns this place, c'mon I'll pay for the stuff I doubt a meal for two will break my father's bank account."

Grinning and heading inside Chifuyu's mind was too focused on this moment to even remember the situation with her soul and the infection that was affecting her. Steiner had successfully reminded her of her values and even eased her mind towards the coming of the unknown, who knows what this virus would do to her at the moment. She had to do her best for the possible last days she had.
