Cocking an eyebrow in some faint confusion, Fuuen contemplated the question she asked him. Start her off easy? This was training, yes? Of course he would begin with the most basic of practice. It would be rather foolish to just throw her into the thick of it without establishing fundamentals.

"It would be poor form of me to do anything else. Draw your blade for me, would you? I would like to study your stance before we move onto any actual techniques."

Fuuen was firmly in his element now, and his focus was now only on swordplay. It was his passion, the one thing that gave him purpose in a life which otherwise lacked even a consistent timeline. The seriousness in not only his tone, but his gaze as he studied her, was rather apparent.

Well, duh. Why would they go into anything complex right off the bat, but it seems Elyss’ attempt at humor fell on deaf ears. At least she knows that Fuuen is fully into this session. That’s good. She should learn a lot from this. Even if she doesn’t get it down immediately, this will surely set the foundation for her to practice on her own and grow. He’s serious, and she can only feel her insides heating up. Her mind has already started zeroing out anything of nuisance to give this man before her her full attention.

A stance, huh? Elyss is a bit lost on how she should stand with her one sword, but she tries something with the idea of her fighting stance. She sets her feet shoulder length apart letting her left sit further up than her right. Then, she brings her sword down while holding it up horizontally tilting it forward as her left hand grabs hold of the hilt as well right under her right with her upper body a bit slouched much like boxers curl up into themselves to quickly defend.

“Like this?”

Of course, she didn’t expect to be in an adequate form, but it’s all she really has. She already felt like she was doing something wrong, and she wonders how Fuuen will take this abomination she is trying to make look good.

"Mm, no."

That was all Fuuen said as he moved to Elyss and began correcting her stance. There was no sense of propriety as he simply touched her wherever was necessary. An adjustment to her hand there, another to her elbows. He crouched lower and moved one of her legs to the side a bit.

"Your stance is more akin to a hand to hand stance than a swordsman's. It would do you perfectly well against an amateur, but in a situation such as this, wherein you are not aiming to kill, you need precision. Keep your back straight and your joints taut."

Taking up his own stance, it was abundantly clear that one could practically cut glass with how sharp Fuuen's every angle was. Most swordsmen kept themselves loose, ready to adapt, but to use a blade as Fuuen did required absolute control of every inch of the blade. To that end, he was tensed at all times, ready to make even the most minute of adjustments. Yet, he did not seem to even fidget, the immensely long blade still as stone.

"This is the cornerstone of everything I will teach you. Before I can show you anything more, your control over your body must be perfect."

Eh? His hands make contact with her, and she feels herself grow slightly rigid. It wasn’t that his foriegn touch scared her or anything, but she did not wish to accidentally ruin whatever stance he forced her into. His hands are that of the crafter, and she, his mold waiting to be shaped the way he found pleasing. Though, she must admit that this is the first time someone has actually gone about teaching her something so gently, yet he had a seriousness about it that has her full attention. Her own eyes move taking in her new stance in interest cementing the look to memory. However, she knows it will take many redos to be able to recreate this stance on her own on instinct.

As he finishes, she tightens herself more letting her muscles and joints grow taunt like a spring wondering if she may pop by accident by holding this pose. When her eyes fall on him, she notes how perfect he is in every way. He is like a still statue, but he flowed into such so easily. That is what practice and love for one’s craft is all about. He is in perfect control of his body. She wishes to do the same and gives Fuuen a slight nod in understanding. Control over her body… She can do that… Yeah… Easy...

After Elyss made her attempt to tighten herself, Fuuen loosened up, watching her carefully for any slight movements. He was impressed by her form, at least for a beginner, but obviously when one was as experienced as he, there were the most minute of differences that simply made themselves apparent. He said nothing, but he once more came closer, touching her here or there to test the degree to which her body would react. They were very gentle touches, soft enough that, were her form correct, she would not move at all.

"Outside stimuli will always be something to keep in mind. While your own body is vital to keep attention on, never forget that you are still doing this with the intent of affecting the outside world. Many swordsmen I have known aim to look inward as deeply as they can, to focus only on themselves. That is not the goal of this technique. You must always be aware of every action you take, of the effects that it has."

He then began to circle her slowly, his eyes continuing to watch her very carefully. He still did not like this attire of hers, as he could not judge her muscles or her joints ideally given how much it covered. But despite his general lack of propriety, even Fuuen was keenly aware that to simply ask her to strip would be far too much for a first lesson. In time, perhaps, when a greater trust had been established.

Here he came yet again to test her posture that he just helped her into. Guess he wishes to see if she were doing as told tightening her muscles to be as composed as he was. His touches caused her skin to tingle from the strain of holding herself still, but she kept it together while he prodded her. Besides, he did help her get like this. Damn. He’s like a hawk circling its prey with how he watched her. Each circle had her eyes on him wondering what his next move will be. Luckily, she wasn’t naked or she’d start to feel a bit conscious about her body. So many times has someone commented on her looks and such, and she couldn’t help but feel that he’s trying to gauge the same in some weird way. Yet, as before, she thought his gaze too professional to be anything to get mad over.

“So, keep watch of my surroundings? React accordingly? Don’t waste any movement? Something like that?”

"Yes. Forgive the metaphor, but consider combat like an unpainted canvas. Every action that you take, or that your opponent takes, will leave a brushstroke upon it forever. Both you and your opponent will see it, remember it happened, and act accordingly from there on."

Fuuen finally stopped, stepping in front of Elyss and continuing to simply watch. He brought a finger to the edge of her blade, pressing forward just enough to draw blood. That was good. It meant she was keeping firm. With a nod of approval, he simply looked upward at the moon, stepping off to the side once more.

"Make a single swing, if you would, and return to that stance. One of the most important things you can do is not only start with a firm stance, but return to it."

Yeah. That’s the same with hand to hand combat as well. Every punch, every kick, and every block. Your opponent is watching you. You’re watching your opponent. Every action leaves an imprint that the other attempts to adapt to. An ever changing battlefield; a canvas that is never truly complete. Even if new layers of paint is slathered onto it, that canvas will always have the drying remains upon it. Elyss understands this.

“Make a swing, huh?”

She notes how he pushed against her and cut his finger. At least she is able to stand rigid. That is her old training at work despite this time, she is wielding a sword. Make a swing and return to her stance. She sighs and takes a breath before raising her sword and swinging downward till the tip barely touches the ground. It is a sloppy swing, but it showed that she has at least used her weapons before. Then, she attempts to return to her stance. However, her hands moved a bit from where they were before and her feet had shifted ever so slightly. Her shoulders aren’t where they were last time, but at least she locked her body once more; rigid as a rock.

Shaking his head almost instinctively as he watched Elyss' swing, Fuuen almost immediately went to her side when the swing was complete, once more making corrective actions on her stance. Her leg was out of place, her shoulders were all wrong, but he was at least impressed that she kept herself firm. He supposed it wasn't terribly surprising that her swing would be so sloppy given her form, but it did mean there would be that much more to do.

"I take it you have not received much formal training with the blade. This will actually serve us quite well, as it means there are no prior lessons that I will need to work past. A woodblock yet uncut, as it were."

Only after he had corrected her entire stance once again, Fuuen stepped aside and watched her carefully, his voice firm and his eyes firmly on her form once more.

"Again."

Again, she messed up. Of course she’s not the best at this. She’s spent most her life training her fists. It wasn’t until she received her Zanpakuto that she actually considering growing in knowledge of how to use a sword. She did not expect to get this correct at first. That would be far too arrogant.

“Okay.”

That’s her only response to getting corrected again. Back into the original position Fuuen had placed her in, she tries to wait a bit to get a better feel of this position. She feels she wasn’t terribly far from this. She just needs to keep at it until her form gets closer and closer until perfection, and even then, she has to continue to take this form time and time again to cement it into her mind so that she can instinctively take this stance without a second thought in a battle. Not wasting time thinking about what to do or how to do it. That is her main goal her.

With a deep breath, she slashes down again, much in the same manner, but her arms seemed less fluid with a more clean cut showing that she is forcing her body to try and do this correctly. And then, she resets her stance back to what Fuuen desired her to be closer to his design but still suffering from slight miscalculations.
