Cyrus

Artist: Kota Hoshino - Song: EG Expression II

To be Grandmaster of the Sternritter came with privileges few others enjoyed. While it was true most of them did not concern Cyrus, there were two which saw fairly frequent use. The first of these was the wide information network he had formed courtesy of those Vandenreich members he sent across the globe. He was, after all, one of the highest authorities in the organization, and he treated his people with a compassion that would ensure a mutual loyalty. He did not want blind followers, but allies. He gained information from them not by ordering it, but simply by treating them such that they would share it with him. Regardless, the word of the many Quincy was one of the greatest things to which Cyrus had access. The other...

“Niflheim. My apologies for extended absence, I have been rather preoccupied as of late. A great deal to do, especially with the war as it has been. The Soan fellow has finally left our domain, something I am all too happy to report.”

In truth, the regularity with which Cyrus felt a desire to give counsel to the Elect distressed him tremendously. Such a thing was both unprofessional and, frankly, wholly inappropriate. She associated herself intimately with Ulv Auber, a woman on whom Cyrus' opinion was...mixed, to put it delicately. But this id not seem to reflect much on how he viewed Niflheim, and that was something which gave him great pause any time he considered it. Why was that? What was the reason for this consistent attachment to his superior?

Such a question was hypothetical, of course. Cyrus knew fully that this was simply attraction, nothing more and nothing less. It was quite simple though, surface level at best. Outright subtle, even. There were few things about her which stood out to him, after all. Her eyes, of course, mesmerizing in their ever-shifting shade, silver at a glance, though he had noted a myriad of shades and could recall most offhand. But who could not do such a thing? Her inhumanly pale skin, as well, unblemished as it was, elegant as the finest porcelain and yet infinitely more beautiful to look upon in its radiance. Natural for anyone to remember. Her hair as well, of course, such gossamer which might never have been woven even by divine hands, much less by anyone upon the Earth.

...Having considered those all together, perhaps it ran a touch deeper than “surface level.” Regardless, none of those features, beautiful though they might have been, were truly what Cyrus found himself gravitating towards in Niflheim. Rather, it was her ability to display such presence and such authority, to carry herself as was expected of someone in her position, and to let nothing of her humanity show through. He understood fully that it was present, that she was not simply an unfeeling machine. He had seen the faintest traces of it here and there, and of course if she was to marry (something Cyrus often let slip his mind), then it was only natural that there was far more beneath the shell she displayed. Yet it did not come through. The Vandenreich saw only their unflinching leader, resolute and unwavering to lead them forward. It was something Cyrus could not help but find...admirable. Yes, that was it. Surely.

“There is nothing further on my agenda at the moment, though of course I am here to advise you on any matter you see fit to discuss.”

How true that was. Cyrus did not like to have his time wasted. He did not appreciate spending even a few moments on idle chit chat. Yet for the Elect, he would have spoken on any topic she desired for hours on end. He hated it, truly. This level of admiration (yes, admiration, certainly not affection) did not suit him. He was not sure something so unbecoming suited anyone. Yet he could not turn himself away from her radiance, though he masked it as though simply a well-meaning subordinate. In time, he hoped, it would all simply pass.

ENTER THE DEPTHS

Artist: N/A - Song: N/A - Word Count: 963

"I almost made a mistake, maybe love... Just isn't for me." The thought came unbidden to the Elect as she looked out the large open window of her office, her eyes shimmering with undertones of shadow silver, highlighted by hints of steel, and a glimmer of platinum from the refractory rays of light that gleamed upon them. The smell of brine was thick in the air, and the cry of gull's warbled against the distant crashing of waves against the artificial piers of the city of light. A gentle breeze tangled her snow-white hair, which she thoughtlessly tucked a stray lock of behind her ear.

Documents lay neatly piled on the right-hand side of her desk, by an old ink brush that she used to ink out her signatures in classic brush-strokes. On the left, a book: Great Expectations, lay ajar, a dog-eared page showing where she had just left off. The elect raised an arm straight over her head, her other arm coming around to stretch it across her form. Niflheim had just finished catching up with the mountain of wartime papers that she had to file, and intelligence notes on the happenings of the war front which all lay neatly organized by importance, and necessity on her desk in manilla folders.

Today she was in her standard attire, the Quincy bangles that hung from her ears, and the ethereal white dress she wore emblazoned by the symbol of their race; the thin see-through netting which overlay her skirt was neatly tucked away, her clothing was spotless. Her head would turn from looking out the window when she heard a sharp rapping on her door.

"Come in." Her voice was soft, mild-mannered and neutral, carrying with it an air of aristocracy; However, that air did not stem from superiority, but rather from the impassivity, and the reality that lay behind the inflection of tone that carried across the room. It was simply kind and betrayed no emotion beyond that tempered kindness.

A small smile blossomed on the face of the Elect upon seeing her Sternritter Grandmaster. It was not a full, measured smile, but one that was of appropriate expression for that of a superior meeting one of their confidants. Cyrus went into a long-winded speech on his apologies for his extended absence, one that would be cut short by the elect raising a hand to stifle a laugh at her uptight comrade, returning to a state of emotional mildness as she brought those shimmering eyes to gaze upon one of her hopefuls for the future of the Quincy race.

"It's quite alright Cyrus, I'm more than used to doing this amount of paperwork, the small amount that came for your absence was negligible, considering the benefit of having you out in the war front. " Niflheim's statement was gentle, flowing like the sea breeze that tousled her hair, and cooled the room with its mild warmth.

Niflheim's back was poise, everything about her from the faint way she nodded her head, and the way her eyes studied her Sternritter thoughtfully as he spoke of Stefan's departure aided the sense of etherealness about her. While she would not outwardly verbalize a similarity in opinion about the Soan's departure, she would offer her grandmaster some sound advice.

"The Soan, while not beneficial for our race, does mean well. It seems like he is actively making strides to better himself. While I do not agree with his viewpoint, I can admire him for that one aspect of himself." Dislike, or happy was not a term she often coined when it came to the Quincy people. Only betterment or detriment in the grand scheme of things was something that mattered. It was one of the things that she wished to impress upon Cyrus, that their own personal views did not matter when it came to the leadership of the Quincy people, only the progression of their race was what mattered.

"Have a seat Cyrus, have some tea. " The elect spoke, raising herself fluidly from her chair in a motion that seemed to carry with it, the mild dignity that embodied the Quincies leader. Her steps brought her to an ornate kettle that lay within a glass armoir. She would open a jar next to the tea kettle, picking out a few leaves of green tea, freshly dried, and put them inside the kettle.

From there, it looked like she had just put her palm upon the kettle, while in fact she had used her control over reishi to embed the concepts of condensation, and boiling onto the tea kettle. This led to the water in the air rapidly cooling and filling the kettle, before the second concept would boil it, steeping the tea, and filling the room with the aroma. She would grab two porcelain cups, bringing them over with the tea kettle before setting them all down on the desk. Going back, she grabbed two coasters and a glass jar of sugar cubes.

Niflheim would pour each of them a glass, bringing hers to rest cradled between her palms as she looked out the window. While Niflheim was Looking out the window, Cyrus might notice a few small cues that not all was right with the elect. The faint, dull look in her gaze that spoke of sorrow, or the way her shoulders seemed more tense than usual. Or maybe even, the way her fingers pressed against her cup, and the momentary tremor that would run through the glass-still tea within her cup. Or maybe, the fact that she had invited him in for tea when often their meetings were brief, concise, and about instruction, learning, and planning. Whatever the case, it was clear something was amiss with the Elect, and maybe, just maybe, by inviting him in, she could be hinting she would like him to break the ice. Of course, most of this would only be theoretically understood, maybe Cyrus could pick up the differences if he was focused on reading her.

"There are sugar cubes if you want Cyrus, I know tea can be quite bitter, but it reminds me of my homeland." Niflheim said, that gentle smile once more surfacing upon her lips, as she made eye contact with the Sternritter Grandmaster once more.

Cyrus

Artist: Kota Hoshino - Song: EG Expression II

Naturally, though he was hardly proud of it, Cyrus almost immediately recognized that Niflheim was not herself. There was what he might hae called a nervous energy around the Elect, as if some great weight pressed upon her. True, it was subtle, infinitely moreso than it might have been upon any normal person. But in spite of his wishes, Cyrus noticed even those minute changes in her demeanor. One one hand, personal matters of hers were just that, personal, and it was not his place to intrude on such matters. On the other hand...

"The tea of my home is quite bitter as well."

That...had not been what he intended to say. Perhaps he could write it off as some sort of metaphor? No, that would be dishonest of him, such things he would not abide. He felt the fool here, and as such he took another moment before replying, wishing to collect himself.

"Forgive me, Niflheim, but you do not typically invite me for tea. I do not believe we have once had such a meeting. That is not to say I have any qualms with it, for of course I do not. Rather... Are you well, ma'am?"

Cyrus left the question open after tht. He did not want to press any further. What she wished to say, she would say, and he doubted there was anything that he could do to change that. He knew that something was wrong, of course. He could see it in her every action. But he would not force open the facade that Niflheim raised. It would only sully her.

ENTER THE DEPTHS

Artist: N/A - Song: N/A - Word Count: 963

With a soft clank, the cup she held came to rest upon a coaster upon the thick wooden desk. Her gaze fell upon Cyrus, her eyes shining like bottomless mercury pools, fringed by hints of platinum. Those eyes almost would seem as if they could peer into a soul, almost like they could extract one's darkest secrets with but a glance. A faint smile graced her lips, full of weariness, it was a marginal breadth of emotion, which the elect had allowed to slip past her almost perfect facade.

"No, I am not alright."

The elects words were gentle, and her silver gaze broke from Cyrus before she looked out a window, as if trying to find serenity in the wayward clouds that drifted on by. She soaked in their beauty, and from that, she managed to regain her calm. She raised her cup to her lips and took a soft sip, sighing after she had done so.

" For millennia I have existed as a bastion that our people could return to for refuge. Ever since Yhwach nearly destroyed our people I have looked on. I have seen and felt joy and sorrow for our race. "

Her words were even and soft, and her silver eyes flickered back to Cyrus before she would have stood up, walking over to the window, looking out upon the town that remained peaceful even now.

" But I have always been alone, and until recently I thought that would remain true until the day I died. "

A small chuckle escaped the elects lips as she gently waved to a family that was passing by on one of the walkways below, smiling as one of the younger children waved back excitedly.

" However recently I have caught myself thinking that it might be nice to spend these endless days with another and yet... "

Niflheim's words remained even and soft, wistful even as she leaned back against the ledge to her window. Her mercurial gaze leveling back at Cyrus, as the faint smile that adorned her face seemed far sadder than it had initially if one did not just consider it a trick of the light.

"I find my trust broken, my honor sullied. I find myself regretting this fledgling hope of mine."

A faint giggle bubbled forth from Niflheims lips as she shook her head faintly.

" You'd think I'd know better. A thousand years and I still don't fully understand the machinations of my own heart."

Cyrus

Artist: Kota Hoshino - Song: EG Expression II

Far from a fool, Cyrus was something of an intelligent man. True, his greatest strength was in his mathematical capability, but one did not achieve such a remarkable talent for calculation without an eye for even the smallest details. Though...in truth, this deduction did not require many small details. He was already fully familiar with the Elect's...relationship, though he would not speak on that unless she broached it first.

Still, what could he say to her? Was honesty the best policy in this instance? Could he even trust his own words? If he simply took a moment to step back, to analyze himself fully...yes, he knew that he was exceptionally biased in this situation. He would hae loed to deny it, but for the sake of his own honor, and his duty, it would simply be disingenuous to deny the truth of the matter.

He did envy Ulv. He did long for Niflheim, try though he might to deny himself those feelings. But...this was not simply about that. This was about her well-being.

"Perhaps it is not my place, Niflheim, but as your advisor I feel I should speak as honestly with you as I could. I...cannot say that I fully understand the scope of your feelings. I have never shared such feelings with another. However, I understand the nature of such things. Beyond that, and far more importantly, I value your happiness, both as Elect and simply as a fellow person.

"There is no fault in wishing for such a relationship with another, to share such emotional closeness. Nor, for that matter, does fault lie with you for misplacing your trust. If it is your desire to find one to share your days with, I implore you not regret that wish simply on the failings of others. I know you are a woman driven far beyond most, Niflheim. I cannot say you should simply drive this pain away, or ignore it. But do not let it define you, either. If you wish for such companionship, then find it, Niflheim. Find that love with one who will not betray you, with one who will give you all that you both want and deserve. I do not claim it will come easily, but it will come if you seek it out. Of that I am certain."

"You have said your honor is sullied, but I think that is far from the case. You are still the Elect. The Vandenreich still stands behind you. They may not know this has occurred, but I, as your Grandmaster, certainly do. And I, Niflheim, do not see you any differently."

That much was all too true. None of this had changed what Niflheim was in Cyrus' eyes, no matter how much he himself wished to change that. She was not simply the Elect to him, she was a woman, perhaps the first he had ever felt such genuine emotion toward. Was it divinely ordained? Or was this the influence of daevas upon him? It worried the man that he could not answer that question. Yet, as he looked upon the leader of the Quincy, unable to help but study her features with far more care than he looked upon any other...it only proved more difficult for him to consider the issue.

"I know this is a personal matter for you, Niflheim. I obviously do not wish to step into such a thing as Grandmaster of the Sternritter. But that does not mean I cannot do so as simply Cyrus. I know that there is little I might do, but you need only ask, and I will do whatever I might."

ENTER THE DEPTHS

Artist: N/A - Song: N/A - Word Count: 963

The words that were said, each resonated strongly with her soul. Despite not saying anything, the elects platinum gaze, which shimmered incandescently with varied white-silver highlights truly rippled as the elects lips opened and she felt words lay just on the tip of her tongue, unbidden words that she wanted to say, but was woefully hesitant, and afraid to voice aloud. Slowly, her lips closed, and her fingers increased their pressure on her teacup as she blinked back the water that glimmered on the corners of her eyes.

"all i need, is for you to listen. All i need, is to not be judged."

Once the words escaped her mouth, the glass that lay in her hand shattered, her small modicum of strength, enough to send the shards of glass into her hand, enough to let crimson scarlet pour from her pristine flesh. That pain gave her a detached sense of clarity as she studied the shards and made no move to remove them. Instead, Niflheims platinum gaze moved back from her hand to stare up at Cyruses face.

"I feel.. that I stand on a precipice. While my mind agree's with your statements, my heart does not. "

A sigh escaped her lips, as the emotions that lay bare on her porciline features were barely veiled behind the phantom mask of serenity that the elect had attempted to erect upon her face. For the first time, something else flashed upon the face of the elect, an emotion that the elect had always known of, but never truly allowed herself to feel. A feeling known simply as hate. For the moment it was visible, a raw emotion that was impossible to hide, and it was accompanied by Nif gripping her hand closed tightly, blood flowing from the shards that continued to dig into her flesh.

"But I am also afraid, because while I allowed myself to love, I am now also capable of hate."

After a few moments, she let a soft smile adorned her lips, and she'd allow her fist to unclench, her eyes studying the man that sat a very short distance away from her. The smile that lay upon her lips was forlorn and sad, the kind of sorrow that stemmed from watching ones race go from the very heights of glory, to the very depths of despair.

"Because If I can hate, then that hatred could potentially lead our race to ruin. "

Niflheim's face shifted to turn and look off out the window as her smile turned more serene, her elegant posture showing her as what her people saw; a ruler that was unassailable and pure. The one thing that had been constant for hundreds of years, almost since the beginning. Not emperors, not gods, not rulers, Her.

"It was for the sake of our race that I took them from our ancestral lands."

Her smile grew slightly greater.

"It was for them that I severed the Legacy of Emperors, and sent a dear friend into exile. "

A soft chuckle escaped her lips.

"It was for them that I spat upon the pride of our race and put aside my own misgivings to forge a momentary peace against our mortal enemy. "

Soon though, if one looked past her lips, up to her eyes, one might see the tears that now fell freely, the shining droplets of crystal that trailed down the contours of her face.

" So that we could wait, and thrive, and grow stronger. As the world imploded around us. So that we could weather any storm."

Soon, the Elect let a hand press against her lips, to keep the sobs back, to keep the crying down. For once in her life, the shell that she had erected, the unassailable symbol of her perfection, had finally came crumbling down against her will, allowing her heartfelt thoughts to be laid bare.

"But right now.. I genuinely want to ruin the woman who betrayed my heart. Only then will I truly be at peace, but this is the one thing I cannot ask of you. . . Can I?"

Niflheim exhaled slowly, before wiping her eyes. Before looking up at her grandmaster, the raw pain, and truth of those words, reflecting in her eyes.

Cyrus

Artist: Kota Hoshino - Song: EG Expression II

Were these tears in his own eyes? No, surely not. A god did not cry, and Cyrus knew that he would certainly never have shown such a sign of open weakness. Not...not in front of Niflheim, regardless. He simply felt empathy for her in this moment, that was all. That was the full extent of it.

That was it.

"Niflheim, the pain that you have suffered is not some cross that has been yours to bear. It is not good or right that you have suffered under that yoke. You have struggled, have brought our people through storms which surely would have destroyed any other. We have persevered, and you have carried our people to a safety they surely would not have known otherwise. Yes, such a thing is good, is worth unspeakable praise. Yet..."

It was difficult for Cyrus to find the words to reply here, if only because of the feelings that he simply could not suppress in this circumstance, the undeniable, unassailable sense that, yes, he did care for this woman, wished to hold her and assure her that all would be well, and-

No. He would not let that train of thought continue, he would not make this about himself. Cyrus was forgetting the truth of the matter at hand, letting his damnable heart interfere with what he knew was necessary.

"To love, to hate, these are things which I would never deign to deny you. To deny anyone, Niflheim. If you come to hate so strongly that you feel you must destroy her, then simply tell me, and I will rein you in even if it kills me. Such is my duty as your Grandmaster, to serve as your advisor and assist you in all things. Do not force yourself to suffer in silence. All that I wish for you is that you may feel earnest happiness, however that must occur. If it demand you harm others, then bring that harm unto me. If it demand that you end the love you have felt for so long, then end it. But do not ever allow yourself to think that you will never find it again, Niflheim. I-"

Cyrus caught himself there. He swore at himself internally, but continued speaking with only the briefest of pauses. That was one thing he could not say to her. It would be improper.

"I know with every fiber of my being, Niflheim, that you can be loved by one who will not bring this pain upon you."
