Kuchiki Keiko

"Hi, I'm from the Seventh Division. Captain Kagayaku needed these papers delivered to command, so, here you go."

Keiko handed the bundle of folders and papers over to the lady at the front desk. She took them in and asked Keiko to wait by while the paperwork gets processed, and to sign some documents and take the receipt to officiate that the paperwork was successfully delivered and received. Naturally, she obediently waited, all the while assuming she'd complete this task and return to the Seventh Division grounds for the next one. As luck would have it, that wasn't on the table for today.

Kokoro

Yawning as she left the 1st Division's changing rooms, Kokoro stretched and thought about where she was gonna go now that her shift was over. She had way too much stuff to do...

"Wah!"

Honestly, she hadn't even been paying much attention at all, and had only barely avoided walking right into the other girl waiting around at the Realm Enforcement front desk. She didn't recognize her, so that probably meant she wasn't from around here. Was she a Shihoin? Didn't recognize her though, so that wouldn't be right.

"Uh, sorry 'bout that, my bad."

Kuchiki Keiko

"Wah!"

Two people yelped in surprise at the same time, with the same yelp. The collision bumped Keiko forward and knocked a small stack of papers over, not onto the floor but just spread across the raised counter at the desk. She apologised to the counter lady and compiled the papers back into order.

"S-sorry about that, miss, I'll put it ba--"

Her words paused when she looked over to see who had bumped her, though her hands didn't stop with the reordering.

"Ah, yeah, it's fine."

Her words were a bit quiet, though still audibly clear. Keiko was familiar with the person before her, and normally someone of their heritage was the type to be immediately met with a scowl; but, this person was a bit different. Keiko knew of them through noble lessons, where she was to learn the members of various noble families, and almost the entire registry of all the Great Noble families. She probably also saw her at various ceremonies, if they both attended. She'd also heard about various rumours from the maids in the Kuchiki House--they were prolific gossipers, and one of them was about the Shihouin "bastard". Just like Keiko.

Keiko continued filing the papers in order without saying anything more, allowing an awkward silence to fill the air. Once done, and with basically nothing else to do while waiting, she turned a bit to Kokoro at an angle, not quite facing her fully forward. Her face was directly towards Kokoro, though her eyes were a bit downturn, not quite making eye-contact.

"F-fancy meeting you here, are you delivering something too? O-or, do you work in this division?"

The type of words she was saying were as if the two were familiar, but that was just because Keiko was familiar with Kokoro. She had no idea if things were reciprocated.

Kokoro

Kokoro may have been dumb, but she wasn't so dumb that she couldn't tell when someone was uncomfortable. For her part, though, she wasn't really sure why this girl would've been. Nervous? Hm... Maybe, but it's not like Kokoro was really anyone worth bein' nervous about. Just a girl, after all. At least, in this context.

"Oh, yeah I work here in Realm Enforcement. I figure that's a good way to keep in the Soul Society while I learn a thing or two, yeah?"

Though she was speaking as if they were already familiar, that was mostly just because the girl was both tired and a bit of an airhead. It didn't actually register to her at first that she should maybe make an introduction, explain further, any of that. She did, however, really like Keiko's headband, and moved closer to examine it without really waiting to ask for any permission on that front.

"Oh my gosh I want one of these! Where did you get this, it's like, beyond adorbs! Ya gotta take me there some time, I'll even buy ya lunch if ya do! Oh! I'm Kokoro, by the way. I totes forgot to ask your name, lol, that's my bad."

Kuchiki Keiko

"Keep in the Soul Society? Would you be somewhere else otherwise?"

It felt like overstepping boundaries once Keiko asked, but from her curious nature, she didn't even think about it and immediately asked. Especially since Kokoro was a Shihouin. For a moment, she wondered if the woman meant to leave and go to the Living Realm; it wouldn't be the first time a Shihouin did that. A tinge of disgust momentarily flared in her heart, but she reasoned with herself mentally before any of that came to the surface and expressed itself.

This bit of thinking and self-control had Keiko unprepared for Kokoro's sudden closeness. She took a step back with her arm bumping into the stack of papers yet again. Thank god she caught the stack just in time before it spread all over the counter again. The lady behind looked up from the papers and gave a certain type of look towards Keiko, and she responded with a meek "sorry".

Then, she turned back to the woman in front of her. Only then, she realised that she hadn't introduced herself either, and that Kokoro was entirely unfamiliar with her. Wow... that makes things even more awkward.

"Uh, yeah, me too. I'm Keiko. Kuchiki Keiko. I've seen you around before, like, at ceremonies and stuff."

This was the type of girl Keiko found most difficult to deal with. The type that took things at her own pace. Usually, she liked those kinds of people. Ulv Auber was one, someone she idolised privately, and so was her Hakuda tutor at home. This person in particular complicated that affinity. Especially since Keiko was the type to get swept up in it quite frequently.

"That sounds fine, y-yeah. I got it from, uh, I think it was a gift from my tutor, actually. It was from the Living Realm. Karakura Central, I think. I've had it for a couple years now.I, uh, I like your horns, too. I think they work well for you."

Kokoro

"Well, ya know, if I was in Earth Affiliation or somethin' like that I might end up down there. I dunno, I wanna stick around here for now."

Kokoro definitely didn't mind any questions, but she was also just the sort of girl who didn't really think too much about boundaries most of the time, especially between two girls their age. What would be weird about that? Nothin', obvs.

"Oh! Oh, gosh, I'm totes sorry, I didn't even recognize ya! You're usually all dolled up at stuff like that, wouldn'ta even imagined ya in somethin' like this. It's cute though! Super cute, I think it suits ya."

With a nod of affirmation as she grinned to herself, she put her hands on her hips proudly as Keiko complimented her horns. Most of the time she might've taken that as an insult, but since this wasn't someone from her own family, the thought didn't even actually occur to her. That was, after all, where most of the teasing came from.

"Ya think so?? I'm glad ya like 'em, I usually try to make sure they don't just look bland n' stuff. I tried some new ribbons out today, usually I go with a couple little bells but I thought maybe a good luck charm would be cute. C'mon, let's walk n' talk!"

Without actually waiting for any affirmation of that decision, Kokoro simply took Keiko's hand in hers and started making her way out. She didn't really have a destination in mind, but that was fine. Just walkin' was fun!

Kuchiki Keiko

Once again, Keiko felt complicated in determining how she felt about Kokoro, because she yet again seemed to make a distinction between herself and what Keiko usually thought of Shihouin. Being in the Living Realm on account of Gotei responsibilities is rather filial and responsible. Compelled to say something to keep up with her flow, Keiko briefly commented on it, not that what she said particularly mattered.

"Ah, I'm interning with Earth Affiliation."

Keiko might've blushed from the compliment, but in her experience they were usually motivated. She felt that Kokoro was being earnest, but the adjustment to not taking direct compliments to heart just became a habit. Also by habit, Keiko responded with a polite smile and a "thank you". Admittedly, she never thought about if anybody else felt the same way, so Keiko freely complimented other people, sometimes genuinely, sometimes motivated. At first, she didn't actually know what to say, and just complimented the horns. But, after saying she liked them, her attention was drawn there, and in the end decided that she did indeed like them.

The girl's inner-thoughts were interrupted by Kokoro's continued assertiveness--she could only submit with a surprised "O-oh, okay," and followed along per Kokoro's pull. Certainly, sometime later, she'd remember that she was here to begin with for business, and that the receipt still needed to be brought back to Seventh Division. Sometime later, certainly.

Kokoro

"Ooooh~ Earth Affiliation? I heard that's a fun division, don't they go campin' and stuff? Ya been on any of those yet?"

Kokoro was honestly just making small talk, not really thinking about whether or not this might count as prying. Of course, it wouldn't, not if you were a normal person, so Kokoro naturally didn't mind either way. She just kept on with their walking, a big smile still on her face as they made their way through the Seireitei. Where to go, where to go...

"Anywhere in particular you'd wanna stop into? We probably got some time, it's still early in the night after all."

The idea that maybe Keiko did not, in fact, want to hang out had not really crossed Kokoro's mind, nor would it do so any time soon unless pointed out to her.

"No, not really, I just do menial stuff."

Anytime Kokoro talked to her, Keiko felt compelled to answer, and she thought much harder than necessary about what to answer with. Especially since the results were very short and unimaginative. Worse yet, she started thinking about how short and unimaginative it was, and the rumination cycled onward. So much so, that while the mention of the night still being young would've typically reminded the girl of her duties and schedule, her worry over making an already awkward (for her) situation more awkward took precedence.

"Oh, uh, wherever's fine with you."

Kokoro

"Whaaaaat?? Woooow that's totally lame! I'm glad I didn't join up there, I almost did though. But it's cool spendin' time here! Ya get to know a lotta the people and the places, lotta stuff you'd totes never even see if you were just walkin around normally."

Eventually, a sign caught her eye. An izakaya she stopped into now and again after especially long shifts, the name "Sasayama" in neat, almost quiet-looking typeface above the door. She didn't actually even ask if Keiko wanted to go, she just pulled her right on in, picking a table and sitting right on down with a big grin.

"Yoooo! Miss Barkeep! Gimme three, it was a long day today and she needs one too! And a buncha yakiniku, thank ya thank ya~!"

The bar was, all things considered, not too terrible noisy for an izakaya, though the very nature of such a place meant that it was definitely louder than anywhere nobles might have usually gone. Indeed, Keiko and Kokoro were, even at a glance, the only two of anything resembling higher standing here. Everyone else was a regular, everyday member of the Gotei. Most nobles might have felt out of place, but Kokoro? Well, she felt right at home.
