Kuchiki Keiko

Yamamoto wheeled Keiko up a ramp into the open ryotei. Servants of both the Shihouin and Kuchiki were present, the table already set. The ryotei sat in a traditional japanese garden, built right over the side of a small, serene pond. The leaves were still gone, the water frozen over still, and a soft blanket of cotton snow layered over the ground and roof.

The person they were meeting was not only a senior, but a Head of a Great Noble family. To pay respects, they made sure to arrive earlier at the set location.

"Are you nervous, Keiko?"

Yamamoto bent over a little to whisper into Keiko's ear, the sudden arrival of his voice surprising her into a small jolt. Keiko's eyes were still covered by bandages, so she had no way of anticipating Yamamoto coming closer. Her mind was pre-occupied. She was doing her best to enjoy her time outside, exposed to the chilling, fresh air and the warm sun. At the same time, Keiko couldn't help but be consumed by her thoughts and anxieties. She was to meet the Head of the Shihouin, a family she held heavy reservations over. The only person to overturn any opinion she had of them was Kokoro, but even then she was an exception. Kokoro was also a girl, something much easier to deal with. The Head, was not a woman. In fact, Keiko had never, of any of her memories, met him face to face.

"N-no. I'm just... I'm fine."

Of course, she was lying. Inside the sleeves of her formal kimono which she was put into for this meeting, the girl was clenching her hands hard.

Then, her head shifted to look to the same ramp she came up to before arriving to the table. Her eyes had been out of commission for a while, so her ears were a bit sensitive, and she could hear the rumble of a wheelchair smacking against the wooden planks.

He was here.

PAPA SHIHOIN

"I'm too fucking old for this." Yushiro spoke the words to his half-daughter, Kintori, who was currently on wheelchair duty today. At the moment, Yushiro was equipped with an oxygen tank and tubes down his nose to try and force air into his lungs, as currently he couldn't even do that himself. Every breath was agonizing pain and all he wanted was for it to be over soon. Kintori was just staring straight ahead. She's had a lot on her mind since the fateful day that she injured her niece, none of the thoughts healthy for her mental or emotional state. As he was wheeled in, Kintori immediately noticed Keiko and started to cry, but she couldn't show weakness to everyone here, especially the Kuchiki. So, tears were flowing down her face as she kept her expression to a very blank but serious one, rolling Yushiro into his spot.

"Yes, yes, hello all." He mustered up some energy to bring his arm up and wave to all of his guests. As far as who was present on the Shihoin side, it was him and Kintori with a few nameless servants. Some of the faces he recognized, others he didn't. One person that did catch his eye however was the young girl in the wheelchair. Assuming this was the reason of his visit anyways.

"Please, as you can see I'm very sick so I'd like to-" There was a loud, single cough from Yushiro that was so sudden that it would scare a few of the Kuchiki. Most of the servants have been used to his coughs by now, it filling them with a pang of dread. "I would like to get things wrapped up as quickly as possible."

"Now, someone speak." Kintori was still crying, her mouth now forming odd shapes due to her trying to hold back a burst of emotion. A small cry escaped however, prompting her to immediately cover her mouth. She couldn't stand being her, watching what her mistakes have caused: pain and suffering.

Kuchiki Keiko

There were a lot of noises flooding Keiko's ears. At first, she heard the rattle of the wooden planks on the ramp that the wheelchair rolled over. That was quickly replaced, or rather overtaken, but the rasps of Yushiro's heavy, assisted breaths. Not that Keiko could tell what it was; she figured the wheelchair was perhaps electric or something, and the noise was just the motor going, or something along those lines. Almost masked by those rasps was the sound of someone almost tearing up, but it was such a momentary thing that Keiko assumed she heard wrong.

It wasn't her ears that caught onto this, but just her sense of touch. For whatever reason, around where Yamamoto was, the atmosphere felt like it was getting hotter. It flared, for a moment, but faded quickly after. Like the tearing up, maybe it was just Keiko being mistaken?

The truth of the matter, and likely only someone as experienced as Yushiro would be able to tell, was that Yamamoto's reiryoku momentarily flared violently. His zanpakuto spirit hummed like an idle engine building up power, and a heat burned in his body, only barely leaking out enough to warm Keiko. His eyes were dead-set on the one pushing Yushiro's wheelchair, sheer killing intent, focused enough to be normally undetected. The intent and flare were quickly subdued, and Yamamoto returned to being a faceless figure behind Keiko.

Then, the man started talking some more. She could tell it was from the person seated on the wheelchair, just from the direction and magnitude of their presence. They coughed once, a loud and sharp sound that gave Keiko another jolt, but she did her best to composer herself otherwise.

"Ah, Shihouin-sama, uhm... my aunt, Kuchiki Rukia, set this meeting up. She didn't really, uh, explain things very clearly. Uhm... it's, I guess she thought it would be good for us to meet before... uh, you know..."

Keiko's words started out formal, but the more she thought about these circumstances, the more her confusion influenced her and transitioned into less formal speech that was trying to make sense of these things.

"Ah, pardon me, Shihouin-sama."

As if to mask her nervousness, and also to clear her throat that started to grow very dry, she reached onto the table, tapping it lightly while moving her hands around until she eventually found the teacup and took a polite sip.

PAPA SHIHOIN

He still had no idea who she was, so he was going to continue this meeting under the assumption that she was Keiko. But first, he had to address someone. Yushiro's eyes averted towards the man standing behind Keiko.

"Know your place. I'll let that slight pass, but know that any sign of hostility shown during this peaceful meeting will be seen as a disregarded to my position, Rukia's power, and an insult to me. I will respond in full." He pauses for a moment. "You may ask my niece what happens when you insult me." This promise was made on the assumption that news about Yugiri got out, which it should have. His servants talk, and people talk.

He went back to Keiko. "It's nice to meet you, finally. Granted I hoped that we would me in better circumstances. I'm not long for this world and yours has changed drastically. While on the subject-" A smaller and lighter coughing fit occurs. "I want to personally apologize to you about what happened. I have failed as both a father and a leader. I thought I raised a daughter who learned to show restraint, but better yet have simple decision making skills." Kintori was silent.

"Now, to lighten the mood. How have you been doing? I'd imagine the wheelchair was a very unfamiliar switch to life. Believe me, I know."

Kuchiki Keiko

"Yeah. Sure. Gotcha."

Yamamoto responded curtly, frankly pretty rudely in fact, and in response Keiko turned around in her wheelchair to punch him in the stomache. He recoiled, not really hurt since she couldn't muster that much strength with her poor positioning, but it was enough for him to react. Yamamoto mouthed a sorry to her and himself, and went back to being "invisible", though that wasn't very effective the first time.

"I sincerely apologise for his rudeness and him stepping out of line, Shihouin-sama."

Keiko offered a bow, a few curses floating through her mind. That said, his threatening words and reference to his niece had the girl biting her tongue in disapproval. It wasn't in her place to speak, but that wasn't something she could agree with. Even with all the failures of Takehiko, as much as Keiko disliked him, he was still family, and the Kuchiki clan was his clan no matter what. He was something of a dishonour and at times dragged the name down, but it was his name to drag down. Maybe Byakuya was too lenient on his nephew, but at least she knew that her family was one which stuck together. The name was something to be upheld appropriately, but names never came before the relationship itself. Casting Yugiri off, even if she brought shame to the Shihouin clan... it's not even like she was the first to do it, or the worst to do it, was she?

Keiko lifted her head back up once her name was called. It felt... very uncomfortable, to have this man speak her name. She knew he was her grandfather, but they had never met, so they never had the opportunity to make any semblance of a close relationship. As far as she was concerned, they were strangers. Strangers who only met at the behest of her aunt, and even that was something she was starting to question.

The apology felt... hollow. It felt formal. It didn't feel like she received an apology at all, it felt like she received the usual lip-service that was all too present in high society. It was the kind of thing that made Keiko numb to conversations at all. But, that sounds about right. Yushiro wasn't the Head of a Great House for nothing, right? His words must be some of the emptiest around.

Despite all the thoughts she was beginning to form on the man, Keiko still spoke clearly and eloquently. A lot of the nervousness from the beginning was starting to fade, deep inside being replaced with judgement and dislike. On the surface, it simply looked like she was regathering her faculties.

"I have been doing well, Shihouin-sama. Life has not been forgiving in most recent times, but it has surely been educational. I feel as though I have learned more in these recent times than I have in the last ten years of my life. To include the feel of a wheelchair, of course. It is not as comfortable as being able to walk myself, but I can only come to face things which are in my power. As a grown-up, I am sure you know much better than I, that we can not have everything we want. The hills we are offered are sometimes ones not to be ours, but to be overcome."

People sure did talk about a lot of things. Yugiri and Kintori's wrongs and failures weren't the only topics spread around from the Shihouin House.

PAPA SHIHOIN

Yushiro listened to what she had to say and frowned. Off the bat he's noticed a few things about her.

"You are too close minded little one, and that's a horrible outlook to have of life. While yes, you can get by just fine dealing with only your problems, trying to overcome only your hills the same way over and over again. Though that's going to become very boring, very fast. So if you hate being in a wheelchair then you will most certainly hate the rest of your life, thinking the way you do."

"You can have everything you want, you can overcome all the hills, and you can face more than just the things within your power. The problem with your and Takehiko, I've come to find out, is that you all trap yourselves in the situation at hand. Make the most out of the situation, no matter how negative it is or how painful it will be. I'm getting closer to death every second, and while it's not something I look forward to, I have begun to cherish every moment I have with my family. Even right now, with me, you, and Kintori."

"Because I've lived life and I have regrets. You and her are both so young, and you're both going to make a lot of mistakes, and you're both going to learn a lot. I wish I could be there to see it all, be a shoulder for you to cry on, an ear to listen to your woes, a wall for you to lean on, bu I can't. That's a situation that I've taken to make my own, not just one I have to deal with."

"So how are you two going to make your situation your own? Will she just stand there and cry for the rest of her life, never to cope with the error of her ways and actively work to fix on them? Will you stay in that wheelchair forever, getting healthier by the day but weaker by the moment? Or will you both fight against the now? As far as I know, Kintori has yet to reach out to anybody, wallowing in her sadness in her room day after day. What have you done to work towards walking again, seeing again, living again? Sure, you can take every bad thing that comes your way sitting down, or you can do that standing up. It's much easier to walk over your hills instead of crawl, Keiko."

Kuchiki Keiko

Seems like he wasn't catching on. Normally, someone invested in noble speech also responded in kind with similar two-faced slants. Was this a change of pace? Did he notice and just ignore it, or was he trying to throw her off? Keiko was still young and inexperienced in the fields of sophistry, but she wasn't keen on just giving up. That said, his advice--his words as a whole seemed more genuine here. Like, they were actual advice.

"Thank you for imparting me with your wisdom, Shihouin-sama."

Eh? Wait, right now? Keiko was here. Yushiro was here. Was Kintori here? Keiko's head shook around as if she were scanning the room, but to no avail considering she had nothing to work off of. A shudder ran down her spine in memory of the barbarian woman, but perhaps he was just speaking of her in fond memory... hopefully. The spine offered a slight calibration to her words, however, distracting her from the forceful attempts to sophistry and instead answering back genuinely herself.

"I've already taken steps to, perhaps not fix the situation with my legs. Auber-sama, of Minatumi Harbour, will be training me. I intend to still dedicate myself to the goals I had before the incident. Admittedly, at first, I was... distraught. But, people dear to me uplifted my spirits, and showed me the folly in keeping my head down and wallowing in self-pity.

Auber-sama let me understand that life did not stop where my legs stopped, but where my heart stopped. If I desired more, than I just have to keep yearning for and pursuing more. Kokoro taught me that, maybe not for even my own sake, but for the sake of the important ones around me, asking for help and overcoming our hills together is an option most desirable. Hills are hard to climb, crawling or walking, but someone to climb them with makes it better and easier all the same, no matter how you climb it."

PAPA SHIHOIN

"Please, call me Yushiro. Not even my servants call me Shihoin-sama. They don't really call me anything besides Papa now that i think about it..." He chuckled at the oddness of it, but he did want to make everyone feel like family as they're stronger together than divided.

"Keiko, can I ask you something? Do you hate us? The family, for what we've done or how we've treated you. Do you hate me, Chidori, or especially Kintori? I ask because what your father did was out of line, and even though we had reprimanded him, it was wrong of him for leaving you alone. Though, you probably enjoy your time with the Kuchiki I assume? They're not bad people, most of them." He said that in good fun, something that could be noticed if she could see his face. But she couldn't so there was a possibility that she would take that as an insult. Oh well, he was a lighthearted guy. Once she gets to know him, she'd know that he was joking.

Kuchiki Keiko

"I understand, Yushiro-sama."

Calling him "Papa" would definitely be uncomfortable.

Then, he asked a very direct question. One that used to be one of the easiest questions of her life to answer. In fact, even now, in her heart she wanted to just straight-forwardly say, "Yes." But, she didn't. She held her tongue for a moment, and really thought about this. Did she hate the Shihouin? She did hate some of them. She hated Kintori, and she hated Yoshimaru, for sure. But she didn't hate Kokoro. She used to hate Takehiko, but now it felt more like an instinctual dislike... Maybe this was one of those questions you had to answer with your gut.

"Yes. There are many things I hate about the Shihouin, and there are people in the Shihouin that I hate. But, there are people in the Shihouin that I like, Shihouins that I even pity, and ones that I wish weren't Shihouins. I am content with having lived with the Kuchiki, having been raised by them, and received the love of my mother. But, sometimes, I think I regret not knowing another half to me. A half that I vehemently denied, and still to a degree deny--or at least I am learning to cope with. Sometimes, I regret having been born in this position, and the hate I feel for the Shihouin turns very much into the hate I feel for myself, that I had to be one.

This used to be one of the few things in life that I was certain on. Now, after experiencing so many things recently, many of my thoughts and opinions have become confused and uncertain. That includes whether I--or how much I--truly hate the Shihouin."

A weight was lifted off her shoulders and chest.

PAPA SHIHOIN

"Okay, but if you hate some Shihoin and you like others, is it fair to assume that you only hate a few people because you've come to know them and are just grouping everyone else with them? It seems like more a coincidence that the people you hate are also Shihoin . I don't know, just something to think about."

Yushiro relaxed in his chair, closing his eyes to focus on how warm the sun was on his skin. "I find it quite worrying that you can easily say that you hate people just because of who they are associated with. The Shihoin is not only a name but a family, and while we do leave an impression on those that we meet, not all of us are the same. I can tell you right now that you are nothing like my son, you have a more serious air to you than he ever had. In fact, you remind me most of my niece, which is both a good an bad thing. You take being a noble too seriously, so much so that it has become a part of your person. Byakuya once took being a noble too seriously, and that almost led to the execution of his sister. Granted, there are some more details to the situation, because he was so caught up with being a Kuchiki and a captain, that he forgot who he really was." He sighed. "Many people assume that I didn't care for my niece after I banished her. It's actually the opposite. Because I love her, I banished her. She was so caught up in being a noble that she in turn nearly destroyed what it meant to be one, and not just for her but for all of us. I had to stop her while I was able to, or else she wasn't going to be able to live. Was it too harsh? Yes, but it had to be."

"Sorry, I went off on a tangent. What I'm trying to say here is lighten up and relax. This was supposed to be a meeting of two people, for us to strengthen relations and all that. But it seems to me you're treating this like a formal meeting over matters that you would never be delegated with." He then gestured to Kintori with his hand.

She stiffened up before kneeling on the floor at Keiko's feet. "I-I want to apologize, even though that barely matters now. I didn't want to hurt you, I didn't mean to hurt you but-" She was going to burst into tears again but instead held it back. "But I did. And I'm sorry. To reconcile, I offer you my life."

Yushiro cleared his throat, something he instantly regretted because he felt a sharp pain in his chest. "It's not that simple. I'm giving you Kintori as a servant until you are better. She's at your disposal, and hopefully she'll learn something while doing so. This isn't an offer, this is me telling you."
