I. Personality

» Personality:

Distant, Especially Towards Family:
Shintaro hasn’t quite been one to go out of his way to interact with others beyond his contained life. He doesn’t feel as if others would be too eager to converse with someone like him, and thus just simply assumes others wouldn’t gain anything talking to him. Typically his day to day is get up, work, go home, sleep, with minor interactions between these. It isn’t as if he doesn’t want to be social, it’s more of an underlying feeling of inferiority driving him to not be all over people.

This is doubly so with talking to other family members; Shintaro even gets a bit anxious if he’s so much as stopped by his cousins or other members to talk to him. He feels like an alien in his own home, and often times either tries to end the conversation as quickly as he can, or just says that he’s busy and can’t speak. He feels guilt for pushing his family away at times, but he just cannot shake the sensation of not belonging.

Grumpy:
Shintaro’s attitude can pretty easily be described as having a sense of crankiness to it. He wakes up early to work long days just to go home, possibly work some more, and then sleep. He’s very busy and very tired, which leads to him getting pretty huffy and short with people if they’ve proven to be irritants. His temper can be short and impatience can float into his demeanor at times, but anytime he expresses frustration it’s never loud. Unless the incident is serious, he speaks softly yet firmly when scolding another person, as not to be completely out of line and unfair in behavior.

Compulsive Organizer:
Shintaro needs to know where everything is in his day to day. He gets angry whenever something is missing or out of place in his room or workplace, as he cannot see. He goes out of his way to look for the person, and when found, strongly tells them to not touch his things, taking organization extremely seriously as it’s less stressful for him to just, not have his stuff touched. Anytime he’s in a messy setting, he needs to clean it and organize it, as he’s gotten so used to giving everything a place, fixing things up is second nature to him.

Humble:
Shintaro is by no means a prideful person. Even with his level of success, he never boasts or presents them in any light of his own making. He allows others to recognize his successes on their own, never even mentioning that he did anything big unless asked. Despite being in a family of esteem, he never views himself as highly important or above anyone, thinking anyone who believes they’re better than anyone merely by existence is an idiot who needs to be slapped.

Kind and Polite:
Despite his sharp attitude, Shintaro is not a bad, cruel person by any means. In typical circumstances where he’s able to feel comfortable, Shintaro is actually very pleasant to be around, a quiet man with manners and respect for others. Though he isn’t overt about it, Shintaro treats those he respects with a soft kindness, showing concern for others when needed and having a competent level of even showing love to others, his only issue is that he’s so quiet about his own feelings that most people who only look skin deep just don’t think he cares, or he’s robotic in emotion.

I. History

» History:

Shintaro was born on a calm spring morning, however something wrong could immediately be told by the newborn; His pupils were pure white, and he didn’t appear able to look at anything, but otherwise behaved normally as a newborn. His parents would soon come to learn that their first, and only son, was born blind. He was so small and weak, but despite this, his mother adored him. His father was hesitant to even hold his son, the child was so fragile. He didn’t know how to think or feel.

As Shintaro would get older, he would suffer from frequent seizures as a child, such a sight terrifying to his whole immediate family. With this, his father was angered, one day collapsing in despair over his only son being born damaged. Damaged, broken, those were frequent words tossed around Shintaro as he fumbled through the first leg of his life. His siblings would tease him about his blindness, tripping him, taking things, overall making him feel horrible for being different than them.

Akari, Shintaro’s mother, would always spend time with him, as much as she could. She’d take him to bed to read him stories, describe things that he wasn’t able to see, and many other things to interact with him. Shintaro loved his mother, and often would cling to her when she was around. She his light in the darkness, bright and warm to him.

Shintaro would sit by as he heard his siblings spar, two older sisters going at each other. They’d always brag that they were going to be in the Gotei while he sat at home smacking his stupid face into the wall for the rest of his life. This angered Shintaro one day, him challenging his eldest sister to a spar. Even if they were laughing, Shintaro was serious, as his older sister would hand him the wooden sword.

He lost. He didn’t back off, challenging them several times, losing within seconds with each and every strike. He’d flail his sword helplessly as his siblings laughed. His mother would come out to retrieve him several times, scolding his siblings for making fun of him, and brought him away to reassure that he can learn to be able to be self sufficient, and that his siblings were wrong. However, Shintaro didn’t take these words in. All he could think about was his father’s disapproval and that his sisters acted like they hated him. He grew to hate himself, frequently yelling how much he hated being blind.

His mother introduced him to a teacher, a specialist in Kido, telling him she would help him by teaching him about sensing energy. He spent time with this teacher, hesitant to trust her at first, but grew to heed them and practice sensing energy at such a young age. Within these lessons, it would soon be discovered that Shintaro had an inherent gift in his senses, that with a few pushes, made the world clear to him. He could see, not in the same way as others, but he could sense the energy around him and how it lied out shapes and people. Shintaro was finally able to start doing things on his own, with constant practice he soon was able to navigate their residence without any help. His teacher was impressed with his abilities and ability to overcome his impairment, advising that he likely had a place in the Kido Corps when he was older.

With that teacher, Shintaro became comfortable with being taught personally by many more, with using a blade, practicing kido, and many more that would later on become part of his arsenal of skills. One day he challenged his eldest sister to another spar, the older child scoffing and asking if he was ready to lose again. He would lose that spar, and many more, as his mind was trying to keep up with sensing energy and fighting her at the same time.

Over time, with all the teasing, failed spars, and lessons, Shintaro would soon grow to the day he would defeat his eldest sister easily, his young mind sharpened with the stress of time and practice. She couldn’t believe it. They fought again, she lost. Again, she lost. Again! She lost! Both his sisters were dumbfounded, irritated, but decided to leave him be from now on, as they felt such losses were just downright embarrassing. Shintaro felt accomplished, but felt terrible for feeling that way at the same time.

As a young teen, Shintaro brought up the idea of joining the Gotei with his father, who would say no. Shintaro didn’t stop at just that, he would constantly ask his father to allow him to do it, being met with ‘No’s, angry grunts, or annoyed sighs each time. Several weeks of this would go on, until Shintaro got fed up with his father’s stubbornness. He would snap at his father, yelling that he was just as good as his sisters, so why were they allowed to go to the Academy and not him? It wasn’t fair, he would only continue to go on about how unfair it was, until his father suddenly smacked him, hard enough to toss him off his feet. His father told him he was not to talk to him that way, and how dare he behave so rudely to an elder. This sent Shintaro to his room, crying.

Late in the night, Shintaro’s door was open, the boy awakened by his father’s footsteps as the man told him to get up, and to follow him. Shintaro, afraid that there was a worse punishment coming for his disrespect, walking behind him sheepishly. They walked quite a long way, the young man puzzled as to the amount of twists and turns they took just to get out to a district with an open field. His father tossed a sword at him, the young man catching it, and told him that if he could defeat him, he could enroll at the Academy.

They fought, Shintaro doing his best against his father, but he inevitably lost, being pinned by his father with no other options. He almost wanted to cry, knowing that fight was just his father putting him up against impossible odds, about to yell at him for how cruel he was for giving him something impossible to do, but he was stopped by the man placing a hand on his head, telling him he has proven himself, and can join. Shintaro was shocked, but said not another word, thanking his father.

He would enroll in the Academy soon after, spending several years with joining the Kido Corps in mind. His mother was happy and proud, but his father and sisters didn’t really talk to him during the course of his time in the academy. At times he was self conscious, but Shintaro would keep at it, because to quit now would make any and all of his struggles and developments null and void. He would graduate with little issue in the normal timespan, joining the Kido Corps.

His mother was overjoyed in his successes, and convinced his father and siblings to do a surprise dinner when he came back. Though he was startled, he came to calm down and sit to eat. However, as he ate, he sensed something.. Wrong. His vision directed to his mother, sensing something strange, but he soon came to disregard it. He would continue noticing it in his day to day at home, seeming to get more noticeable as he went on, but never said anything, he was certain if there was something wrong, his father and siblings would have noticed as well.

On one untimely morning, a loud thump would be heard. His mother was lying on the floor, motionless. She died later that day to an underlying condition.

Shintaro was heartbroken, brought to the most tears he had ever cried in his life, facing his siblings and father to snap at them, yelling about how did they not notice something was wrong, why didn’t they say anything, why didn’t they do anything? But by the confused, grief-filled voices of his family, he just went to his room to cry. He stayed in there for hours, quietly thinking to himself, slowly becoming to a conclusion; They.. Didn’t know. They didn’t do anything, because they simply couldn’t know. It had to have been something only he could see. That realization made his grief-filled heart drop.

He later would come from his room, going up to each of his siblings and father to apologize for his behavior, and that he would do better next time. His siblings spoke of their own apology to him, that they treated him horribly as children, and that they genuinely were proud he managed to get where he wanted. His father was already wracked with grief, but in his own way Shintaro knew he understood and forgave him for his outburst.

With the growing onset of World War Three, he transferred to the medicinal branch in order to atone for his mother’s death, and what he felt was himself neglecting her. He would be out on the field in encampments to give first aid to those who fought. While he was a bit rough at it at first, he managed to learn how to take care of others, quickly, as such a scene required him to know what to do as soon as possible. He encountered similar situations as he was there, of patients having “hidden” injuries only he seemed to be able to point out. There wouldn’t be much merit or belief to his gift until his older sister, the middle child, was brought in with abdominal injuries. They would have surgery to patch her up, and she would seem alright for the first while, Shintaro having made sure he had some presence for her recovery as he was worried, even if their relationship was rough.

He noticed that same strange sensation, his vision stuck onto her body, focusing as he saw something strange in the area she was operated on. His heart lurched, noticing it was a tiny spot of disturbance inside of her, quickly getting a surgeon’s attention to it, at first being blown off for being overly worried for his sibling, but he stopped them, held them by the shoulders, and said the last time he ignored his senses, someone died. This was enough to convince them, putting her under a few days later.

This time, Shintaro was present for the surgery, directing exactly where he sensed the disturbance in her body, and in that spot the surgeon was surprised; A small piece of some kind of debris was pulled from her, the spot likely would have developed a terrible infection if left long enough. His sibling would come out of surgery fine, and put on antibiotics just in case. Shintaro was relieved, but didn’t tell his sister that it was him who found the potentially deadly foreign body. No, instead, she was told by one of the surgeons, in response she would catch him and hug him a week later, thanking him. Shintaro felt anxiety towards her acknowledgement, quietly accepting the thank you.

Further on into the war, Shintaro would be forced to fight to protect his comrades at times, the first few times of going into Shikai being a complete mental rush for him as he was forced to mentally develop faster to keep up with the state, protecting many patients from scumbag invaders who would dare try to go for the sick or injured.

After World War Three, he quietly worked within the medical branch, trying not to draw too much attention to himself as the decades rolled by, but those treated by him know him as an excellent medic.

I. Racial Techniques/Abilities/Skills

» Racial Abilities:

Sharp Spiritual Senses:
Born with and trained upon for several centuries, Shintaro has a sight beyond sight so to speak. Almost to make up for his inability to see, his energy sensing capabilities are in a realm of it’s own. He is able to sense and even “see” people as the energy coursing through them, his mind being able to process shapes depending on how the energy around him is formed. He is able to pick up even the smallest of traces, such as on objects, and even be able to tell what kind of energy it is. His view is of a 360 degree radius around him, spanning about 30 feet of clear vision on flat ground. Anything past that blurs and fades out into the void of uncertainty. This vision isn’t like xray where it can see through objects, for the most part he’d be able to tell if something possessing an energy signature is nearby, but he wouldn’t be able to see it unless it was out in the open.

This is primarily how he sees, his brain processing them into whatever form they appear as, however it isn’t like a one to one with how typical sight is; there are no colors, shapes are not always an exact one to one to their actual forms, even if his perception of sensing energy is sharp. That meaning, while his abilities in sensing energy are far sharper than the average person, he isn’t going to be able to recognize someone only by “looking” at them.

Exceptional Kido User:
A strong part of Shintaro’s primary arsenal, as someone apart of the Second Division, it would be shameful if he didn’t have some expertise in the use of Kido. Shintaro is skilled with even using mid to high level kido typically, and of course his strongest suit is in healing Kido. Shintaro very well can hold his own even with spells alone, being able to quickly decide and perform whatever spell needed in such scenarios. He has even shown excel in performing strong seals, barriers, and often only chooses to use lower level offense kido, as he feels it isn’t necessary to “Nuke a can to get it’s contents”, being more partial to using his natural abilities.

Body-Soul Irregularity Detection:
An extension of his strong spiritual senses, not only is Shintaro able to see someone by their energy, but he can also detect issues within their body or soul. Say for instance, someone’s appendix was going to explode, but they didn’t exhibit symptoms yet. Shintaro would be able to “sense” the body’s hidden reaction to the ailment, and be able to point it out, and even specifically where the irregularity is. He can detect many illnesses and conditions before they even start showing symptoms, especially so since he’s only trained this ability more to be able to pick up even the tiniest of possible disturbances. He can also sense conditions of one’s soul, such as being able to tell if it’s been fragmented, corrupted, etc.

Sharp Mind:
Due to his abilities and training, Shintaro has the gift of an intelligent, clear mind. He has been proven to be a smart young man, despite his personality, being able to strategize and figure out the best options for himself and his allies. Typically, especially in states such as his Shikai, where his spiritual sensitivities are only further sharpened and enhanced, he has been known to appear to almost predict his opponent’s movements when given enough time to know how they fight, his mind picking up on all manner of small details in order to use any to his advantage. He is also resistant to mental attacks, as his mind and senses typically will automatically tear the illusion apart, as it wouldn’t make sense to him and can be logically dispelled.

His ability to process and retain information is also stellar, such as when he uses Shunpo or otherwise go very fast, his mind is able to process every little bit of it without overloading or running out of steam, and even notices things of intrigue while in such states of speed that he can notice quickly enough to stop and double back. He is also able to do similar to particularly fast moving opponents, being able to see their movements to a degree that he’s able to react almost as quickly as they advance to attack.

His memory is also insanely sharp, retaining a lot of information about other people or even small details such as how someone’s footsteps sound like. It’s entirely possible for him to hear a piece of information only once, and be able to recite it almost word for word some time later.

Reflexive:
After a good long time of accidentally bumping into things, tripping, and getting unexpectedly hit, Shintaro has built fast reflexes that are so effective they work well in combat. With his strong senses, he can see when things are coming, and moves in order to react to them. Hence why touching him without warning isn’t really a good idea, as you’ve set off his automatic reaction, but at the same time he has to reel himself back because, why hit or push someone who’s trying to hug you? With his fine senses, he’s even able to react immediately to even tiny objects being thrust at him, and react quickly in order to either protect himself, or to retaliate.

Medicinally Skilled:
Not only a healer with Kido, he also is very informed on all manners of medicines, poisons, etc. Sometimes he keeps a vial or few on him in case of emergencies, also being able to make his own medicines or poisons for whatever occasion calls for them. Slow acting, fast acting, potent, weak, bitter, tasteless; it doesn’t matter, with enough time he can figure out how to make a drug for just about anything medically possible.

Skilled Shunpo/Speed:
As previously stated, Shintaro is an effective user of Shunpo, and generally can be quite fast without it in general. Not only are his speeds faster than most opponents can process, he can also maneuver whilst in a high speed state, changing directions and otherwise being able to deduce how to move while moving due to his mind’s ability to process the environment while in such states of speed, allowing for more effective and diverse movement while being so fast.

I. Sealed Powers

» Zanpakutô Name: Yurei

» Zanpakutô Spirit Appearance:

Shintaro Kuchiki [3-4+, D Rank Hazard] IPFeBgK

» Inner World: Pure darkness with vague hints of objects, such as grass or the breeze, being present, very similar to how he “sees”.

» Zanpakutô Appearance:

Yurei typically takes the appearance of a typical cane intended for the blind, though if one looked closely all along it’s features are faint traces of the intricate, eye-like markings on the zanpakuto spirit. The tip of it is very sharp, lacking the plastic nub typical canes possess.

» Sealed Zanpakutô Power:

Hands of the Unseen:
This ability is very much one derived from psychokinesis. When in use, the markings on Shintaro’s cane glow, emitting a strong aura. The “hands” themselves cannot be easily seen by the naked eye, appearing merely as slight fluctuations in the air with untrained eyes. Shintaro’s cane emits a psychic force that he can easily manipulate and use for whatever purpose he desires. This presence is able to move very fast, as fast as his mind goes as it is the entity controlling it, in order to do things such as grab, push, or block things. These hands can only affect up to a 30 foot radius, as it’s the same radius as his own sight and in turn, the farthest these hands can easily reach. These hands are also very strong, as it’s strength are scaled to the strength of his mind and will, being able to do things such as pick himself up, pick others up, throw large objects, and similar feats.

I. Shikai

» Shikai Release Phrase: Expand the mind to see the unseen, Yurei!

» Shikai Appearance:
Rather than being a sword or any physical weapon, Yurei seeps into Shintaro’s hand, spreading out to become all manners of intricate, crimson markings all over his body, reminiscent of his zanpakuto’s markings, in particular a large, eye-like marking takes place on his forehead, taking the appearance of a third eye of sorts. These markings seem to shift, as if made of an ethereal, ghostly presence.

» Shikai Abilities:

Mind’s Expansion:
As implied by it’s release phrase, Yurei quite literally expands Shintaro’s mind. His spirit sensing becomes far sharper, being able to see up to 50 feet rather than his natural 30, and the images are so sharp they’re almost one to one with regular vision, aside from everything being fluctuating outlines. He himself has stated that his is possibly the closest state he believes he can ever get to normal sight.

Not only are his senses sharpened, his ability to sense other’s energy is also enhanced, being able to sense even the smallest traces of a foreign entity, moderately “see” through objects, and in some instances he can predict things (Such as movements/attacks) that could happen in the short term far more clearly, his mind being able to chart possible scenarios within seconds in order to gauge how to react.

Blade of the Mind’s Eye:
Even though it would appear Shintaro has been rendered defenseless by the disappearance of his zanpakuto, this couldn’t be any further from the truth. In reality, Shintaro’s blade has become entirely a psychic force, one he can manipulate at will, most commonly demonstrated by the use of two fingers pressed together. Shintaro can create a blade made purely of near invisible energy, using his fingers or his hands as a medium of control.

In short distance, he can mold psychic force to behave as if he were holding an actual blade, being able to stop attacks, sword fight, slice opponents, etc. This blade is extremely sharp, being able to slice through flesh like butter, and even slice hard objects such as metal or stone clean in half. His efficiency in movement can make close combat potentially deadly for his opponents.

This ability can be used long distance as well, with the sharpness and strength of his blade, he must swing his blade in order to send a long streak of psychic energy barreling in his desired direction, being able to fly up to 30 feet before diminishing. This long distance psychic blade isn’t as sharp as it’s origin, but it still can prove to be a deadly force as it’s difficult to see and quite fast.

Mind’s Eye - Rain of a Thousand Spirits:
By swinging his psychically-created blade in rapid succession, Shintaro can produce many, many psychic blades to attack his opponent. All of these blades travel in a very lineral direction, never deviating from their trajectory until they dissipate. They are just as sharp and fast as the aforementioned long distance blades, however they are much, much smaller, the equivalent of being hit with many small, sharp knives, rather than one large blade.

Mind’s Eye - Heaven’s Rage:
By focusing his psychic force on a specific area, Shintaro shuts his eyes, and upon opening them, that spot suffers from a sudden explosion of energy. This explosion is by no means fiery or devastating, merely suddenly and loudly causing destruction in one specific area. The explosions aren’t very big, being more comparable to a mine’s explosion than a proper, full powered bomb. They’re the most dangerous when one is close to or right on top of the spot he initiates the explosion at. He can only create these explosions within his available sight, which is within 50 feet.

Hazard Rankings
  • Power:D Rank
  • Influence: B Rank
  • Resources: D Rank

Comments/Notes: I'm giving this character the rank it has for a myriad of different reasons. I feel that they were able to execute on a decent theme for their powers because of the fact that it ties into their personality, background, and who they are as a person. It is a power that is connected to his sense of blindness and trying to find usefulness in a world he cannot physically see.

Secondly, since he is a Kuchiki, it is assumed he'd have a high amount of influence since they are considered to be a prestigious family in the Soul Society.

Thirdly, I also trust that Lilian isn't one to abuse the powers that were approved since I helped work suggesting the idea to her and have threaded with her extensively enough to feel confident in this approval.

So, I'm comfortable with the tier since it gives him enough skill to be useful, but still has room to grow since as a character I feel he should progress more.
