A Storm on the Horizon [Abalia] LT5vPYw

She had heard of the world known as Soul Society. She had been told many stories as a child and as an adult, and had been expecting something in a more traditional Japanese style. None of it had actually prepared her for what she was now seeing.

Sylvia walked with wide, curious eyes for this new world around her. Her hands hung casually at her sides as she was escorted by several imposing men with swords. In stark contrast to the black robes of the Shinigami of this world, she wore her white long coat with pride, adorned with blue accents and her own signature gold borders. Underneath that, the dark blues of her business formal suit were visible, leading down to a skirt, leggings and booties.

Though she tried to contain her powers as best she could, the sublte push and pull of reishi around her was inescapable. Just as her leiden hant repelled the nearby atmospheric energies, her own body drew it back in an inevitable loop. Beyond her capabilities as a Quincy, even, her path through the Seireitei towards the office of their Captain Commander was colored by her more esoteric abilities; strong feelings of love for all things and a compassion towards others left to hang in the air for anyone to latch on to them.

Eventually, however, she was brought to a more impressive location within the Gotei's otherworldly fortress. Her escorts stood to either side of the wide door, and allowed Sylvia to enter at her own pace. Drawing her hands to behind her back in a show of respect, she held her head high and entered the open front room. A soft grin adorned her face, and she waited patiently to be called in to the office of the Captain Commander.

Abalia Kyoraku-Hayden

When dealing with her fellow Shinigami, Abalia had come to allow her office a certain degree of warmth, her stony demeanor lightening just the faintest bit so as to welcome a more positive atmosphere for the Gotei. In a diplomatic situation such as this, however, the Captain Commander did not afford that faint bit of matronly air. Despite being quite visibly into the course of her pregnancy at this point, Abalia was very capable of seeming every bit as unflinching as always.

She motioned for the guards to allow the Quincy guest entry, not hugely worried as to her own safety. There were a few reasons for this, of course, but chief among them was that she knew Hime would be more than capable of stepping in should anything dangerous occur. For now, though, she didn't have her bodyguard right at her side. It would send a better message if it were simply the two of them.

Regardless, whenever the woman was given entry, Abalia greeted her with a nod, gesturing to the single unremarkable chair across the desk from her. The breeze blew through the office, rather handily accomodated by the room's immense balcony, but it almost seemed muted simply by the firm presence that Abalia chose to exude.

"Welcome, Captain Brauer. I thank you for making the journey to Soul Society for this meeting, there are rather many things which prevent me from leaving often. What can I do for you?"

Try as her spirit might to keep its air of curiosity and good will, the feelings of control and tension within the commander's office was stifling. It did a great deal to remind her of her mission here, and the heavy weight that she carried for all the Vandenreich.

Sylvia cleared her throat, though she couldn't help but to watch the room with all of her senses. Beyond the surprisingly... Not strong soul of the woman sitting in front of her, her abilities of perception caught on to what was readily apparent once she had taken the moment to look: the woman's pregancy. Her gentle smile only grew more emboldened; however, she did need to be professional now.

The Quincy took her seat before explaining, "Zank vu for agreeing to see me, Frau Kyoraku-Hayden." She had noticeable difficulty with the soft and flowing nature of the commander's surname, but was nothing if not persistent. It didn't hurt that she had been practicing, either. "I vill be brief.

"Ve vish to haffe your permission to trafel through zee Godei's territory in zee Americas." She paused momentarily to allow the most basic details of their request to sink in. "Some of our soldat haffe been enthralled by zee demons of Schadowfall, und ve vant to perform ein rescue."

Abalia's eyes gave nothing away, given her exceptional practice in situations such as this, but she studied the woman across from her thoroughly. It was simply in her nature to compile something of a brief analysis of all those she spoke to, particularly when meeting them for the first time. When you lacked in any particular ability to defend yourself, one became very good at gauging a threat at a glance.

"I had heard report that there was a schism within the Vandenreich, and that some had allied themselves with Shadow Fall, but enthrallment is news to me. I will have to update our records accordingly."

Tapping her finger against the desk only once in what seemed to be some indication of thought, Abalia then immediately began to speak once more. Most would have needed at least a few moments to consider the weight of that sort of request, but this was simply what the Captain Commander excelled in.

"I quite understand the necessity of traveling through our territories in this circumstance. However, you must understand that to openly grant you passage in a hostile action would paint a target upon our backs. Your people and ours are allies, and I do not wish to simply push you out this door with nothing but a denial of your request. But I cannot in good conscience simply risk the well-being of my men and women."

Silence again, for a fraction of a second, and Abalia spoke once more, another long series of hypothetical questions all running through her mind before she settled on one in particular.

"Do you intend this as an open declaration of war, Captain Brauer? Or merely a clandestine operation? This is a closed meeting, and none other than myself will hear your answer. I ask for honesty from you."

"Ja," Sylvia spoke softly and nodded, in an almost involuntary tick intended to convey her understanding of the commander's concerns. Such an action was likely to cause further aggression between them and Shadow Fall, if not outright war, but she stood with Cyrus on the matter: they couldn't allow their soldat to fall prey to demons and Hollow.

"Ve vish to send ein small, capable force into Schadowfall's territory und extract our men und vomen." The Quincy didn't miss a beat, though now, she was treading in uncharted waters. Cyrus hadn't discussed the plan itself with her before her departure, so now, she was making it up as she went along. However, her posture and tone grew only more steadfast against the commander's questioning as she continued.

"I understand your concerns about putting your schinikami in danger, but ve schare in it. Our numbers are small, as it is, und one of zee vomen taken is Fräulein Montero." She paused momentarily to carefully think over her words. "Ve aren't zure vether she is ein orchestrator, or ein victim, yet. Ve chust know that she has knowledge that zee Schadowfall schould not possess.

"I vouldn't be here if it vasn't of zee utmost importance."

"Mm. Yes, I quite understand, both your plight and your desire to keep Ms. Montero from sharing any information with Shadow Fall. However, it is to my understanding that she is indeed a willing participant in their actions. One of my Captains, whose judgment I trust on matters pertaining to demonkind, faced her directly in China."

Abalia steepled her fingers as she leaned forward very slightly, mostly to underline the importance of this whole situation. Taking into account the whole thing, it was not difficult for her to come to a decision.

"We will freely allow you to move through our territories. In the event that the Gotei United engages in hostilities during the course of your operation, we will acknowledge you as allies. However, I will not offer the same refuge in the event that the ceasefire remains in place. Should such a thing happen, and Shadow Fall come to the Gotei regarding your people, I will tell my men to hand you over without hesitation, for their own safety."

Given that Abalia did not state their discussion was over, the table was still open to any negotiation. She was a decisive woman, yes, but she also understood that the Captain had a better understanding of her people's needs than Abalia could possibly have had. If such an agreement was not to her liking, then naturally corrections would need to be made.

A hint of disappointment and anger invaded the Quincy Captain's mind for a moment. Just what sort of ally would sell them out like that, to save their own skin; against demons and Hollow, no less? If her opinion of the Gotei's competency had suffered because of what she'd seen in Beijing, then she now was getting dangerously close to understanding why Ghislain would cut himself off from the world like he had.

Sylvia breathed, and continued, "I'm getting zee feeling that ve are lacking vital information. If it's not too much trouble, I vould like to sbeak vith zis captain who fought vith Fräulein Montero, ven ve are done here.

"Alzough," she furthered the conversation without a hitch. However, as her emotions came to a boil, her accent was steadily growing thicker. "It makes me vonder how dedicaded zee Godei is to its subbosed mission ven its commander vould sooner ally vith demons und Hollow akainst humanidy zan take ein stand."

Before she had realized it, Sylvia had leaned forward in her seat, and the air had grown heavy and humid. A slight bit of embarrassment crossed her face, and she breathed again to calm herself. With the falling tide of her emotions, the reishi within the room returned to its normal state.

"Sorry." She was sincere, if it counted for anything by this point. "In mein time vith zee Vandenreich, I haffe seen schinikami destroy souls. I haffe had to put mein life at risk ven schinikami vould rather hide than fight. Now, ein schinikami tells me that sche vould rather ally vith Hollow, chust to avoid ein fight."

Her previously soft expression had turned stern, and the fires of love and compassion within her now burned hot. "If vu beliefe that zis is in zee Godei's best interest, I cannot say othervize."

A Storm on the Horizon [Abalia] VYUCru2

Abalia Kyoraku-Hayden

Abalia Kyoraku-Hayden was a woman who had spent a vast majority of her life in in the pursuit of rightful duty. A woman who had spent over 20 years without a single moment to herself. Even now her life was comprised of nothing more than the work she performed. It occurred to Abalia that, in all of her time pursuing this, none had ever so flagrantly insulted her. She was not actually upset by it, given that she did not feel such degrees of emotion to begin with. However, the statement was so boldfaced in its nature that "tact" had been taken out of this discourse.

If Sylvia considered her own expression stern, then the crushing weight that now filled the office was infinitely moreso. It was good that those who guarded her were among the best of the best, for even they felt their chests tighten drastically from the overwhelming will of the Captain-Commander. The temperature of the whole room seemed to plummet, glacial was the stare Abalia gave to this woman, and even the few insects who had flown about the room simply fell to the floor, killed by nothing more than her presence. There was no spiritual power here, only the authority of a woman who had spent her life to better the world.

"In my time with the Gotei, I have watched the Vandenreich engage in assaults which have led to the near-annihilation of the Quincy people twice over. I recall the reports of Antarctica's annihilation at the hands of the Kokuryuteshi, as retribution for the hostility undertaken by Ghislain Eberhart. Do you think it prudent that I, a woman who must take into account the whole of the Soul Cycle, and the well-being of all within the Soul Society, ally myself with a people so apparently self-destructive?

"I will not tell my men and women to lay down their lives for the safety of a group who has proven itself incompetent in the past, Captain Brauer. I have already taken a great risk in allowing you to move through our lands. And if my men and women have failed in their duties, then I will correct it. They will receive the necessary disciplinary action for such egregious action outside their duty to the Soul Cycle. But do not accuse me of allying with Hollows, simply for refusing to so openly provoke Shadow Fall."

Abalia's gaze remained firmly centered on Sylvia, and it did not lessen in its inhuman intensity in the slightest bit. However, she unsteepled her fingers now, and looked through the drawer of her desk for the reports she had received on Sofia Montero. Placing them onto the table, they contained only the most cursory of information, quite a bit of the more relevant detail already redacted with thick lines of black ink.

"Speak with Captain Kuro Okami of the Fifth Division. I leave it to his discretion what information to share with you."

Sylvia's breath caught in her throat for a moment, as the commander stared at her with an intensity that drew her mind back to Ulv. Only; here, there was no deeper feeling that she had only wanted what was best for the Quincy, but was outright angry with her. If she had been any less, or if this meeting had come any sooner, Sylvia feared she might have succumbed to baser instincts, like she had before.

However, she did not. Even as the flies dropped dead around them, she stood her ground, and swallowed the choking emotion from her throat so that she could breathe again.

The captain graciously took the file on her former ally, and tucked it underneath her arm to peruse later. Against her better judgement, she felt it necessary to leave with just a few words more, "Ve do not pretend to be gods, Frau Commander."

Sylvia stood, no longer wrapped in airs of genuine respect for the other woman. She remained professional, but nothing more for someone who admitted to wishing death for her people before thinking about fighting the threat of very real demons and monsters.

"Zank vu for your time." She stepped away from her seat, but had one more thing to say, "Und, congratulations." After so much, she turned and left the office of the captain commander. There was more work to be done, and yet more people to meet before she was done in the Soul Society.

Exit
