The letter was sent, penned by the Captain and newest Kenpachi Yoshitsune. He took on the role and had been firing on all cylinders. He'd begun training and rebuilding the Combat Squad.

But even this Captain needed time away if only a little. He'd been mulling it over for some time, who would be the Vice-Captain of the Combat Division. Laskt lacked what he needed, Yoriko wasn't experienced enough. Plenty of things had to be considered. Hanako was the best selection from the current generation.

He was choosing a distant future, one which he hoped shined bright. This Squad had always contained the brightest stars. Shinryu had been a departure from that in some ways. The man practiced a different form of combat. He seemed more akin to a stealth operative.

That was the impression he'd gotten when facing Hebi. Yoshitsune had proven himself with his resolve and cutting the doctor's arm off. Though Yoshitsune had a sense, the man could grow it back. He had the Vice-Captain's badge on his person.

The question was what would she say, the choice was hers to make. As with all things, we have a right to say no. He wore his Haori, his eyes looking over the population from a bench. He didn't get to come out here often, lesser nobility had things to do.

And coming out here didn't some haughty enough, though the Kobayashi were different. They lived out in the Rukongai among the people. So this was fine in his case. He had no time to judge or discriminate against the other Nobles. It was a tiresome practice and brought no fruits.

No, justice was important and the balance is kept in the world. The honor was always going to matter to people. But if your honor could be trampled on so easily. It wouldn't be considered strong, it wouldn't have the name Kenpachi behind it.

That was the goal for everything, to try and correct this course that had been taken. To move the organization or at least his squad towards the future.

The Big Woman

Hanako Yamada

Distant Futures 6EdIfMt

In her time since joining the Gotei Hanako has had quite a few letters and quite a few surprises. Sometimes the letters themselves were the surprises. Very few of them, however, came close to the surprise that this message was. It was an invitation to meet, signed by the new Captain of the 4th Division , a Yoshitsune Kobayashi. It wasn't a name she had heard or read before. Of course, Kobayashi was a name she was vaguely familiar with. It was one of the names you hear every now and then, nobility and such. But that didn't tell her much who Yoshitsune was.

In any case, it was a Captain that summoned her and as a simple trooper she had to obey.

She had just come out if the shower after doing some laps around the compound of the First, so at least she didn't smell like sweat when she met a Captain. It took only a few minutes to dress in her Shihakusho. The last item she took was her sword. Softly she caressed it's sheath, while it was still in the rack against the wall. Then she took Bakumusha and slid it into her obi. After that she finally went out the door.

It didn't take her long to reach her destination. She knew the way. To her surprise she met someone she knew.

Her face brightened.

"Jaeden!"

She greeted him happily like she would greet a colleague and she was about to ask him if he also had been summoned by the Captain of the 4th, when she noticed the Haori. Then it dawned on her and she felt incredibly stupid.

"Wait...are you the new Captain of the 4th Division? Congratulations on your promotion. I am sorry if I acted too familiar."

She bowed respectfully, but her face was honest and she really was happy for Jaeden.

"But I am confused..the letter says I am to meet Captain Yoshitsune Kobayashi…"

So she did at least remember him, the familiarity was nice. The rumors the flew around the Gotei were about the frightening worth ethic he had. Yoshitsune the man who was rebuilding the Combat Division brick by brick. He glanced at her having taken his gaze from some children playing.

"Ah, there is a face I'd hoped to see again after our training. Glad to see you remember me, pay it no mind. We are alone and out in the Rukongai, for now, you are someone who remembers me from before I got the Kenpachi to title other things."

He smiled a bit leaning back as he'd done prior. Kobayashi, his new name and adopted residence. How long could he maintain the illusion that was Jaeden Crow? Not anymore at this point, the documents were signed and sealed.

"I was adopted into the minor noble family of the Kobayashi, they live out here in the Rukongai. They preach closeness to the community and combat-driven philosophy. They've been apart of Squad Eleven since its inception. When war comes, they protect the innocent and poor here. "
They did hold a seat in Central 46 so that was something.

But they weren't with the Four houses, they didn't do or act in any of that. He knew they'd be adopting more people in, to take the last name on. He was a steal as the last one of his family left. His skills and rank didn't make them less likely either.

"They gave me a new name and eventually are going to perform a ritual to seal the deal. Evidently, I'll be getting a full-body to make over according to their council. Not sure what all that entails, but on to business."

He cleared his throat now, moving back into his Yoshitsune personality. Getting himself ready to move back into the act of why he called upon her.

"I am seeking a Vice-Captain, your name is at the top of the list. For a few reasons, I'll lay them out to clear any confusion. Firstly a former member is an obvious selection, someone who survived and kept their will from Shinryu's failures would be ideal. I need someone with a strong will who I can help train and rebuild this place with me. I intend to have two Vice-Captains because our task is large. And I feel as though one, will not cut what must be done. "

He said pausing as his glance went back to those children in the street. The Haori felt heavy, heavier than it had when he stood in the barracks. He inhaled before continuing to speak.

"The fact is, we are weak and those kids suffer for it. My job as a Captain is to prepare those in Squad Four, as best I can for combat. To be the first one on the field and the last one-off. Laskt isn't ready yet, he has inner demons he must overcome. Saera is new yet, unfamiliar with our people and the roster. Durza is on leave, and Yoriko isn't suited to the role yet. , I'm working on a list of other possible candidates. To serve as your partner within the Vice-Captain role, the duties would be divided evenly. "

When he flipped this switch, he became all business. It was as though Yoshitsune understood exactly what was needed. Rebuilding the Division was going to be important. But it required someone familiar, to help those from Shinryu's time recover.

"So, will you accept this task and help rebuild what the previous Captain tore down? I don't mind giving you time, as I still must seek your second out. I'm hoping you'll return and help me restore what the Combat Division was and should be. "

The surprises kept coming and each one seemed to be bigger than the previous. So, Captain Kobayashi and Jaeden were the same person. Only that Jaeden was a nobleman now. Hansko made a mental note that she had to read up how to properly address members of a noble family.

That Jae...Yoshitsune was Captain of the Combat Division was only fitting. His skills were beyond any doubt adequate. All the more was it a surprise what he told Hanako next.

"A Lieutenant? Me?" She asked and her eyes widened in disbelief. Was it a test? Was he toying with her?

When she looked at Yoshitsune's face, she could only see serious determination. In his voice she could equally hear nothing else. No, it was no test or game. He meant it.

"I am honored. I really am. But maybe you should know, that I walked away from the 4th Division and transferred to the 1st because I didn't agree with Shinryu's methods and his person. I felt I couldn't serve under him, so I left."

Hanako didn't think about what Yoshitsune might think about it, but to her it had always felt like a weakness. What was precisely why she wanted him to know. Hanako might be a person that had a distorted self-image, saw herself weaker than she really was, gave into frustration too much. But she was an honest person and could sense how important all this was to Jaede...no, Yoshitsune. She felt that he had to know.

"Also you should know that I haven't had a seat before."

She added. It wasn't like she tried to degrade herself. Her voice was firm and factual, telling information he might want to consider.

"That being said…" she finally spoke again after a while of deep, thoughtful silence
"If the offer still stands it would be an honor. And I would very much like to help you. I like that you have a vision. I can understand that and I resoect that. I deeply believe in the Gotei and it's duty and if I can do my part...I will gladly accept."

After all, even if she might doubt her qualification...this was the chance she was hoping for. This was the chance to do something meaningful, make an impression that lasts, pull your own weight.

He was aware of her leaving the Combat Squad, going to a different Division. Very vividly of the fact truthfully. Yoshitsune didn't mind her humbleness, she had earned that much.

"I know, I was a foot soldier at the time of his leadership. Many many people left, going to other squads his methods weren't in line with the Combat Division. Or how it should be, with that said I'm offering you this out of respect and trust."

He said, knowing full well why she left. He didn't have a duty or a job at the time. He was merely a face in the crowd. The difference being his level of power at his command. The fact he'd been a Captain on prior occasions as well. So he fell into a comfortable lull.

Trying to train those within the Gotei, the future possible Captains, and hoping they did before the war. Shinryu didn't understand the job he guessed. Or maybe it was a lack of people for him to look up to. Lots of possible outcomes to the question.

"I've read your file top to bottom, Hanako I know you as well. A hard worker who has put in the effort and time. This is rebuilding, the Combat Division has lost its way. This won't be fixed overnight or be something I alone accomplish. Each person within and those recruited back. Will have to help in their own ways. Because someday, near or far we will have to step on a battlefield. I can only promise myself, I will be the first one there and the last one-off."

He held out the badge of the Vice-Captain, one of two he had made. The second one if all went well, would go to someone very strong. Honami was the person he hoped for. But that didn't mean it would work out. Other possible candidates were around. But would require an equal amount of effort to obtain.

Hanako had accepted, that was good her peers would be happy to see her return. Also, her hard work is rewarded. That was the goal of Yoshitsune, he smiled when she finally accepted.

"Welcome back, we've got plenty of work to do. I'm sure you'll get a nice welcome back party too. "

With awe Hanako took the badge and looked at it for a second. It was a simple badge, only with the symbol of the Division and the Kanji for the Number four. But Hanako realised in an instant how much more it meant. To her and to the Gotei.

To her it was not just a step forward. It was a leap. Paired with what she just had learned about herself, it made her feel strange, unreal. It once had been her only wish to make an impression into this world, make the world remember her, make everyone remember her, so that the future would not be the void her past was. Later her focus shifted somewhat. She still wanted to make an impression, contribute something that lasted, but now she began to realise that it wasn't for her alone anymore, but for the Gotei and it's mission. And just recently the void had suddenly filled up. Just a tiny bit, but suddenly there was something.

After a moment she fastened the badge to her obi on her right hip.

"A thought just came to me." She said while doing that.
"I might have something in common with my new Captain, something that's not yet in my record. I too have discovered that I have a second name. I just recently recovered some of my memories. Not much, but I remembered my name, my real name, that is, from before I arrived at the Seireitei. I once was named Ameko Sato."

She shook her head and finished fastening the badge.

"But I still go with Hanako Yamada. That's who I am now, I guess."

She straightened up and couldn't help but feel proud. Who would have thought that she would be back in the Combat Division, as a Lieutenant no less.

"I am ready to get to work."

A second name huh, that was a nostalgic feeling. The good news was she was who she wanted to be. When she looked into the mirror, she didn't see an illusion. But the person who she was, she didn't forget that face when she saw it. The shackles that bound her, weren't simple things. No one ever was, plenty of those he'd taken to teach were similar.

"Then, welcome back to Squad Four, I'll formally give you the update now." He said casually as he spoke now looking at her.

"Fact is we are weak, right now if we fought any of the organizations in a mock battle we lose. We are dealing with differences in two primary locations. Combat Division wise we are at the weakest we've ever been. And our Captain Commander Abalia isn't suited to combat. Her skills and wisdom are better spent upon the strategy table. So, these two problems make for an interesting rebuild. "

He'd gotten to meet Ibiki and Abalia after compared the two in terms of prowess. He didn't mean disrespect, nor did he show any in his voice. It was just as it stood they came up drastically short in combative skills at this moment.

"Kuro's our strongest Captain I'd say, Everfrost and Suika are the strongest in the organization by far. This won't do, we of the Combat Division once housed Ibiki and Kenpachi Zaraki. So I find this situation while frustrating one we can handle."

He was giving her his assessment of the situation from a Combative stand point. They came u short and that was just the fact. He smiled a bit, he wasn't depressed or discouraged. If anything the best feeling was coming back from a loss.

"So, for this moment we are focusing on training. Breaking through whatever chains are binding each person. I'm recruiting members, I'll do what I can on that front while also training each person. Eventually, we'll come to sparring, those willing I'll fight..or you can fight. "

He wasn't testing them or trying to set them up to die. Not even to fail, he was trying to help them push through whatever held them back. Whatever it was he could be blunt he could be soft, he'd do what needed to be done.

"If you disagree, let me know. Right now this is what I've been doing to make sure we can protect those kids. The Combat Division has to evolve and grow together, we don't have fancy kido or equipment. We have the techniques and practices we train into our bodies. "

Now it was time to hear her thoughts and answers. To see what she thought of what he presented to her at this moment.

Hanako Yamada

Distant Futures 6EdIfMt

“Thank you, Captain.” Hanako said and bowed. So, it seemed that as of now she was a Fighting Fourth again. Who would have ever thought. Not so long ago she had held the plan to rise through the ranks of the First to one day stand beside Magnolia, Hime and others and behind the Captain Commander to put her life on the line for the Gotei, Seireitei, Soul Society and the Balance that they were sworn to defend. And suddenly all that changed. Although, as she noticed, the goal and the determination remained the same. Only now she stood at the side of Captain Kobayashi, together with the whole Fourth Division. Not bad, she’d say.

Hanako nodded.

“I can attest to the strength of Everfrost-san. I trained with her and only saw a fraction of her true power, but it was still almost overwhelming. To be honest I deeply admire her and am uncertain how she might react to this change. I hope she won’t see it as if I was abandoning the First.”

Hanako still stood in front of the bench. She felt it inappropriate to take a seat next to her Captain.

“I once saw the Captain Commander in person. I was quite far away but...I have heard that she is allegedly weak. Someone once even said to me that I could defeat her in a physical fight. But I find that hard to believe. I felt a power and presence emanating from her, different from anything else I have ever felt from any Shinigami. It affected even the strongest Individuals present. How can such a person be considered weak?”

She thought about all the people she had met. All the people she had sought out for help with her training.

“There are also people like Ulv Auber and Elyss Kishimoto. Both are very strong. I already fought on Elyss’s side once, not too long ago.”

She felt those were two names that should be added to the ‘assets’ the Gotei had. Elyss was serving in the Gotei anyway and Hanako was at least reasonably sure that Ulv was on their side. And there were some more she remembered, whom she’d met in the world of the living. Some possessed a strength so vastly different from any Shinigami that it was hard to gauge, like a certain demon and her goofy companion she remembered.

“Concerning fighting...I am ready for that. You probably remember that I am always up for a training or a sparring match. Well...most people know that, they see me running around the Seireitei after my shifts almost every day.
There is only one thing: I finally know the name of my Zanpakuto and it has granted me access to it’s Shikai. However, I...erm...haven’t discovered it’s full potential yet and I don’t know how well it is suited for training. So, should we need to step up the training to such levels I would hold back until I have learned enough about my Shikai to know whether it’s full power is safe to use under training conditions or not.”

Absentmindedly she patted the sheath of her sword. It was still the same, almost shabby looking weapon. But if Hanako had loved it already, simply because it was such a well-made sword and perfectly balanced, the affection she now felt for it was beyond any description. Sadly she didn’t realize that by loving her Zanpakuto she loved a part of her own soul, a knowledge that would be infinitely more valuable. But even so it felt like there was not only a weapon and a comrade in battle, but also at least a part of a family she must have had once, but couldn’t remember.

“If I may speak my thoughts...maybe we shouldn’t only work on our bodies. I know that you believe in our duty and our mission. I know that I do. It is what keeps me going, what gives me my determination. I...don’t talk about this a lot, but I really do believe in a greater good. If we could make our fellow Shinigami understand...I mean…”

She broke off. It was frustrating and embarrassing how fast she came to her conversational limits. The lack of practice could do that. So, how could she convey her thoughts?

“Hm...I don’t know how to express this. You know...if we can show somehow that we don’t do this for ourselves. I mean, the whole thing, the Fourth, the Gotei and all. Training and all that surely is for our benefit and fun.”

Talking shop about training and fighting was one thing. But conveying a feeling with words was a totally different story. Hanako just hoped Yoshitsune would understand what she meant. There were those that had a flame burning inside them. A flame to protect the worlds, to protect the Balance and guide the deceased to Soul Society. That was the traditional duty of the Gotei. A flame that was fueled by the knowledge to do something that really mattered. And what Hanako had tried to clumsily propose to her new Captain was that they should try to share that fire, try to lighten that flame in others. As corny as that may sound...

He understood her meaning well, Abalia was special and had respect from people. That was a clear-cut thing, the strong respect for her. But respect didn't always equal out power. These were the facts as he saw them, Magnolia or Shuten was the strong fighters.

"I hear you, I know better than most how hard you work. Your efforts are seen, I can help with your Shikai and things involving it. If we are talking in terms of combative skills, our current Captain Commander doesn't compare to Ibiki. But she does in other areas compare just fine. She doesn't need to fight, that's our job."

Yoshitsune believed in the goal that had to be done. The Fourth couldn't be the only one to stand up. The others had too as well, but for right now. "I want to get the other Squads back on track as well. But for the moment, we are in a rebuild. I can't do any more than I have. The squads are currently in flux, some Captains are missing. Murasaki isn't feeling well, Unohana's gone, Kurotschi's here. Kuro is on a walk somewhere. Our command structure for the Squads is in a state of change. "

Well, that summed up some of it, a few leaves and people who aren't present at the moment. The fact was he could only converse with one Captain at present. He didn't know what to expect though. Given her heritage and the type of person she was.

"Squad's Two and Five are in disarray, Two is mostly run by the Kuchiki at the moment. Takehiko Kuchiki, since his Captain's gone missing. Squad Five's is run by Vice-Captain Shuten Suika, from what I can tell it's a do as you please system. But that's about it."

This was mostly conjecture, nobody knew the whereabouts of Kuro. But he was reliable when needed, Liana, he couldn't say on for sure. Same for the Captain of the Research and Development Squad. He was going to have to take his measure of them.

It was problematic, the entire thing was he would need to increase his strength as well.

"We should head back, but after this moment of respite, we'll be busy. So get your stuff ready, I'll try and help you with your Zanpakuto and fighting stuff as best I can. Eventually, it will come to sparring, but the road has paved a brick at a time. So we'll start small and create your foundation. Alright, I'll be waiting for you at the Squad."

He turned after standing and used a step to cover an absurd amount of ground, he was fast just as many people were lead to believe. It was time for him to get started on further training and further duties.

The Big Woman

Hanako Yamada

Distant Futures 6EdIfMt

Hanako nodded as she listened to Yoshitsune’s words. The Captain Commander confused her. She knew little about Abalia, not more than was generally known about the woman leading the Gotei. But what her talents were, how she inspired so much confidence and trust to lead all Shinigami, while allegedly being not much stronger than a mere human. And then there was this...presence that Hanako had felt when she saw the Captain Commander in the flesh once. She had felt that. Abalia was definitely no ordinary human. Maybe she would ask Magnolia or Hime about her one day.

Once again Yoshitsune offered to help her with training, something Hanako would always gladly accept these days. There was always room for improvement. However, in the case of her Shikai, her concerns were elsewhere.

“Thank you, I would gladly accept the offer when there is time. But what I meant was the nature of Bakumusha’s power, not the scale. I will see if I’m right, when I have discovered it.” she said, half jokingly. Serious again she added:
“However, as I said, I can use it. For now it seems that Bakumusha is a melee type Zanpakuto.”

What the Captain had to say about the other divisions was grave. To her shame, Hanako had to admit that she never thought much about other divisions. She had her own work in the First and that was enough. Sometimes more than enough with the Realm Enforcement being responsible for the peace in all of Soul Society. But now she realised she had to broaden her view. And quickly.

“The Second and the Fifth...that’s Kido and Stealth, isn’t it?”

She thought about it. Wasn’t the Healing Corps part of the Second Division? If so this was indeed grave. They probably could use a stable and good Healing Corps. Hanako made a low grunting sound, giving expression to her concerns this way. Not just slowly, but suddenly and with might did she begin to realise the scale of their task. WIth so much of the Gotei in disarray, Captains missing or positions completely vacant, the Soul Society was more or less open for attack. It dawned on her how a group of Hollows could have managed to set up camp inside Soul Society. There was so much to do, so much to plan...and for Hanako so much to learn. It almost made her feel dizzy. So much at once.
At first she had been so surprised that she had just jumped in and talked about rebuilding, other Divisions and so on with the Captain. Now the reality of it had caught up with her.

Hanako hoped that Yoshitsune would have also read about the incidents with the Hollows in Outer Rukongai and the intel Hanako had uncovered about them. She was about to ask him about it and mention her recent avenue of research into the matter, when he left, so they would meet again at the Division later. or to be more precise: he vanished, flash stepping out of reach in an instant.

For a moment, Hanako stood there. She looked down at her right hip, the badge fastened there. Lieutenant Yamada. It had a ring to it. Well, she wouldn’t back down now.
She turned around and also left the scene, albeit considerably slower than the Captain. there was one duty she had to do, before she really could throw herself in at the deep end: She had to speak with the command of her...former...Division and clear out her quarters. At least the latter part would be easy: Hanako didn’t have many possessions.
