Saisei | Broadening One's Horizons

Several days had pasted since Saisei and Helle Armstrong were able to talk about the necessary requirements for an assault on Jefferson City. In the interim, the woman and her colleagues had made clear their intentions for the boy. Those intentions? Well, clearly, they came with consequences it seemed.

The surprising heat of the spring sun smacked away at his pale skin, the boy finding himself bundled with several other recruits outside of the temporary base stationed near Washington D.C. Before him was a row of instructors and far more important quincy. Saisei was but a fledgling went it came to being a quincy, that being the case made all too obvious that he'd need help. Maybe it wasn't Helle's exact idea but what else could the boy do in the midst of America? Frankly, he had very little choice in the matter.

The instructors weren't too special, the recruit failing to find anything unique about them as he watched them, y'know, instruct. Back and forth, to and fro, their boots and sneakers dug at the carefully laid out dirt tracks nearby the main road leading to the base. Today's lesson was exactly what any quincy needed when they first start learning of their powers. The reishi of the world around them was volatile, learning to at least harness and express it in its purest form was the first steps to building one's self up.

The row of recruits, six in total, had dropped to their knees in unison. Saisei followed suite, soiling his pants with freshly dug dirt without question. One after another, the recruits were tasked with sending what one would consider a small... poof, for lack of a better term, of reishi in the direction of the instructors. After being given a clear cut example, each recruit, one after the next, expressed themselves. The five recruits that accompanied Saisei were what you'd consider perfect pupils, it seemed. Their attempts were successful, a tad too successful.

Finally, the line came to Saisei, the boy without an ounce of quincy blood. He was a special case, his attempts entirely failing. His need to force the reishi from his system was a mistake, something he struggled with day in and day out. With a pretty little sputter, is 'poof' of reishi was more akin to glitter, it was a failure.

"J-Just give me a second, I'm sure it won't be too many times."

Try as he might, his attempts to delay the instruction fell on deaf ears. The instructors continued without the boy, shoeing him away for special instruction. Without it, he would be up a creek without a paddle, as they say. Quietly shuffling off to the side, Saisei took a seat in a nearby chair and awaited his punishment. Failure wasn't an option, even if he didn't possess quincy blood. The Vandenreich expected the best from their recruits, he was a failure in the eyes of even the most fledgling quincy.

It was a shame, really. A damn shame.

ALASTAIR EISFLUCH | OBSERVING FROM AFAR

The warmth of the sun licked away at the pallid skin of another, as Alastair Eisfluch found himself with some downtime between his duties and no place to spend it except for lounging about the DC base. The days and weeks had begun to roll together of late, making a moment of relaxation as valuable as gold dust and yet there was little peace to be had in the camp today.

Fresh-faced recruits were hardly an oddity to the Vandenreich, which took on Quincy of all ages and experiences, but, to Alastair, they were still rather novel. They reminded him of home at a root level, however, it was equally jarring that these trainees were being rushed out into what had until recently been an active warzone. What were they expected to do when faced with a real threat if the limit of their Reishi manipulation could hardly ruffle the white cape that wrapped around his shoulders? He did not mean to belittle them, for he had certainly been at that stage himself once upon a time, but it passed the time at least.

Eventually finding a position on the sidelines, Alastair soon found himself leaning upon a railing doing his best to appraise the trainees without drawing their attention. Each was perhaps a unique talent, though there was one in particular that caught his eye. He was not the star of the show, perhaps the opposite if Alastair had to be brutally honest, but there was something refreshing in watching his drive to succeed at that which his very body seemed to resist. When the time came for each recruit to demonstrate their control, he found himself silently willing for the pink-haired boy to flourish - though even that was not enough this time around.

As Saisei retreated from the training field to take a seat nearby, appearing at least to be humble in the face of defeat, Alastair found himself shuffling along the railing until he was within a pleasant range for quiet discussion. He hardly wished to shout across the camp, and there was something more to this one, so inquisitiveness won out against caution at that moment.

"Are you the lucky one, or perhaps the unlucky?"

He called out, loud enough for it to be clear who he was talking to, hopefully without alarming them. Giving his quarry a moment to face him before gesturing towards the other recruits that were still running exercises with a nod of the head. There was no smile upon his face, instead perhaps a look of mild concern, as his amber gaze sought to meet with Saisei's own to best gauge his temperament.

"Either way, I suppose you are in one of the best places to hone those rough edges."

Johanna | You Know The Drill With This Part

She was , without a doubt, not the right or even the best person to teach other little Quincy's, but that didn't stop the Vandenreich from asking her to assist failures. Maybe they wanted her to scare them into success? Jojo snorted at the thought, if they couldn't succeed at the first try, what was even the point of keeping them around? Not to mention using her to inspire or scare into sucess was a rather masochistic move she didn't expect from the Vandereich to be honest, not that she was against the idea. She grinned lecherously at the recruits, looking them up and down from her seat a bit off from where they worked. They might be weak little losers who still sucked their mum's tit, but at least they looked like good eye candy, especially on their knees. The redhead giggled wickedly to herself as she leaned on her palm to watch one recruit walk away from the others, this one obviously struck out in the training regime. Dude couldn't even gather his reishi, another loser.

Well, that was her job call, wasn't it? With a condescending grin, Johanna descended upon her prey like she was vulture swooping in for her next meal. She stretched out her body as she stood up from her seat, waltzing her way to the pinky and taking her damn time, like she knew her meal wouldn't be going anywhere. But in doing so another man approached him, making the woman quirk an eyebrow. He looked familiar, but she couldn't quite place a name to the face. But that wasn't the only issue here. There was also the problem of that he was absolutely stealing her job, she could just barely hear him speaking. Jojo didn't pout, she wasn't some child despite what her appearance gave off, but she was a little salty. That was her tree to climb, goddamn it. In response to her grounds being breached, the quincy quickened her pace and slammed her metal hand on a nearby tree gain the attention of the two giants.

"i'mma supposed to be helping losers like you who can't even do what babies can do, the Mad Dog herself! So why you tryna steal my job, ginger nuts?"

Saisei | Broadening One's Horizons

The young man felt defeated, the few recruits that had gathered for the special instruction were all clearly from born and bred Quincy families. For Saisei, this was a new experience venturing into the world of reishi manipulation. It came natural for those who were born into the power to control nature itself, as a lowly human he wasn't so fortunate. Not just that, his previous knowledge on the existence of energy didn't do anything but give him the building blocks to begin.

Sitting, wasting his day away, the boy continued to fight against his very nature. Over and over, Saisei attempted to bring forth what one could only consider a cloud of visible, tangible reishi. This wasn't new for him after all, his previous attempts at energy control were actually far more masterful than your average user. Reishi was different, his need to brute force his way to success only backfired repeatedly. Saisei was far from what you'd consider a calm guy who'd meditate his way to success, that was his downfall in this regard.

As his hands lit up with an orange tint, the reishi that slowly built itself up quietly fizzled out.

"Dammit..."

Leaning in his chair, the boy's leg began to shake wildly as frustration began to build. Before long, his thoughts were intruded by the voice of a man he had no connection to. It was rare for a member to reach out when instruction was going on. Turning towards the voice, Saisei's vision quickly became enveloped in shades of red he'd only seen in movies. His eyes a shade that resembled the ooze of a tree than it did a real color.

"I'd say I'm on the unlucky side. Not everyone can be born with the it factor, after all."

Saisei turned fully, adjusting his chair to face towards the stranger before really judging him. He seemed interesting enough, as a senior member he clearly knew more than Saisei did. If he was so inclined, surely he'd take interest in teaching a young boy the ways of a Quincy. He was right too, no where better to be than the Vandenreich if you needed to learn how to be a Quincy in their prime.

"Can't say you're wrong. I've only continued to learn since I've joined. Not too disappointed, not with the Vandenreich at least. Myself, that's a d-"

Before he could finish his own thought, Saisei's mind was invaded by the shrapnel-like screeching of yet another senior member. His head on a swivel, the boy lurched in the direction of the newly acquired voice and felt... well, conflicted.

Yet another shade of red entered his view, this type accompanied by a... rather short statured woman. Cocking his head to the side, confusion washed over his face as he waited for her to finish. Maybe finish was a bad way to describe it away, instead she crudely yelled at the man that was previously speaking from the railing in front of Saisei. Crude was an understatement.

"H-Hey now, the only babies you'll see doin' this are the ones born into it. That ain't exactly fair, Ma'am."

Calling the little cretin ma'am felt like a disrespectful thing to do. Frankly, someone of such small stature and crude words was far more akin to a feral rabbit than they were a ma'am. Saisei was respectful though, he could talk poorly about a senior officer. Even if they were a raccoon.

"I'm Saisei, in case that matters. Can't imagine there's a reason to fight over somethin' right now. Honestly, a little help would be nice."

Turning back to the man, he smiled that same infectious smile he gave everyone. Maybe he'd be likable enough as a recruit to get the real help he needed. Or, the cretin would continue to drone on and on about how 'Ginger Nuts' tried to steal her prey.

ALASTAIR EISFLUCH | STERNRITTER

The corners of Alastair's lips had begun to turn upward, in perhaps the closest the aloof Quincy could get to a smile, as he watched Saisei come to terms with his own fault rather bluntly. It was one of the fairest measures of character, to see someone at the bottom of a low rather than riding a high. He didn't have a response ready to roll off the tongue, but he was beginning to formulate something to assuage the boy's concerns when he caught the blur of another shade of red approaching from beyond.

The self-proclaimed Mad Dog took a different approach to leadership from Alastair, that much took all of a second for him to decide as the words began to tumble from her mouth. His face quickly returned to a resting expression of neutrality, not an eyelid batted at the flippant comment, as he straightened out from his hunched position and corrected the fit of his cloak. He'd no intention of escalating matters any further, but, equally, he was not one to bend before he broke.

"My name is Alastair Eisfluch, of the Sternritter."

His gaze did not falter as it moved between both Saisei and Johanna, eventually settling on the latter.

"I would apologise for my interruption of your lesson - Mad Dog - but, if you are meant to be responsible for training these recruits, can you be confident that it is not your teaching methods that are at fault?"

Even under the heat of the spring sun, his words were delivered with an icy cool that certainly did its part to temper the mood. An invisible gauntlet had been thrown down for the woman to accept if she so wished.

"So, your trainee has asked for guidance. What do you have in mind?"

i'm crazy but
you like that i bite back

"Shut it, bubblegum."

Johanna quickly shushed the recruit, he can wait, he wasn't the issue right now. Well, he technically was, but that's because he's a loser. The problem lied in this cherry that had the nerve to challenge her, because what, she looked like small fry? Walking closer, Jojo sized up her opponent and gave him a dirty look. People like that type always had something to prove and normally she would have attacked and tried to assert her dominance. It was tempting, really, more than anything to just jump his bones like a wild animal.

But alas, Jojo knew that doing any of that right now would just get her in trouble. So instead she just flips Alastair the bird and told him to kiss her ass, before turning back to the loser. The kid who wouldn't even do what she could do at one years old, what kind of person couldn't just grasp the most basic of quincy abilities? She snorted in amusement as she pulled up a chair to drape herself over and observe the pinky. "Ok, now you can talk. Why do you suck?"

JOHANNA.

Saisei | Broadening One's Horizons

Looking from Alastair, then to Johanna and back to Alastair once more, Saisei let out a clearly dejected sigh. He wasn't annoyed, no he wasn't in the slightest. The racoon and her counterpart Mr. Pretty Boy were far from an issue. Frankly, their arrival was almost like a fortune being granted to him. His eyes lit up and quickly fell dull, the fact that the two of them seemed to be at odds was a tad annoying. How could they ignore him when he was the one that needed so much help?

"Alastair, interestin' name. Nothin' like mine, definitely somethin' I'd have preferred though. As I said, I'm Saisei."

Thinking of what to refer to his last name as, Saisei scanned his mind for the tens of thousands of packages he delivered back in Karakura. The hard work paid off, given he'd finally be able to make himself somewhat special. Having only a first name was... corny, he thought.

"Saisei, Saisei Satō."

Watching as Johanna so eloquently made her point clear, the boy straightened himself out in his chair in order to explain himself. Well, maybe not explain. Maybe he meant to elaborate but not explain, explaining wasn't possible given where he was right now. Bottom of the barrel, one could say.

"Alright, so. I just... I sorta try to do what everyone else does, right? I go ahead and pull at the reishi I can around and just, y'know, push. I push, and I push and, as you can see, this is what I get. Less of a push, more of a poof, so to say."

He repeated himself from earlier, generating a wide sum of reishi from around the three of them. It was obvious the boy could control what one would consider the foundation of the waking world, it was also rather obvious that he couldn't exactly do anything with it. The built up reishi, which could be described as grand and far more potent than the recruits accompanying him, quickly dissipated and sputtered back to the world. Saisei's head dropped, his fingers curling around his pink locks as he spoke up once more.

"Like that. Exactly like that... I don't get it. Everyone else can do it, no issues. I try and it all goes bottoms up. I don't get it, honestly. I feel like I'm hittin' my head against a wall, y'know?"

He looked up at Johanna, then back to Alastair. Hopefully, one of the two would be able to help him in the matter. Racoon or Pretty Boy, their choice.

ALASTAIR EISFLUCH | STERNRITTER

Alastair had half expected Johanna to throw a punch as she stepped forward, eyes burning with a fiery tenacity that painted a clear picture of disrespect for authority. A quiet voice in the back of his mind wished that she had gone for it, but he was quick to bottle that arrogance up behind a wall of apathy. Instead of attacking, though, she just swore at him and marched off to find a chair of her own. Satisfied for the moment, he let his shoulders sag and turned his focus back to Saisei.

"Your name is what you make it, Mister Sato, don't go losing sleep over it."

Alastair smirked a little at that comment, resuming his original stance of leaning against the railing, and watched as the boy began to demonstrate his issues. The sudden shift of reishi took him by surprise, drawing more of a reaction from him than Johanna's provocations had managed, and he could feel the energy building higher and higher until suddenly it was gone. All-in-all the experience was a strange one, like a bottle of pop bubbling up until it was ready to burst and then dissipating into nothingness. Even he could not help but feel some level of frustration, but it seemed like he was on the cusp of a breakthrough.

But it was not his place to speak now and so, as Saisei looked back to him for some semblance of guidance, he nodded his head back in the Mad Dog's direction and waited to see what wisdom would be proffered.
