I. Basic Information» Name:
Tsurugi Toru» Alias:
Carnivore of the 79th District (South Rukongai)» Age:
20 Years Old» Gender:
Gotei United» Appearance Image:
I. Personality» Personality:
At first glance, Tsurugi is a rather scary fellow. He exudes a powerful aura that would make those of weaker wills jump out of their skin in fear, as if they were standing before a predator about to sink his teeth into them. His stance lacks any sort of insecurity or fear, standing tall and steadfast, the look in his eyes being full of strength and focus that could appear intimidating to others. His reserved demeanor doesn’t help much to quell any fear or anxiety his appearance would bestow to the unprepared, if anything making him seem even scarier and creepier given he’d look like he was stalking after people with ill intention in mind.
But for any willing to start a conversation with the man, they’d quickly find that his actual personality is completely different to what his appearance and presence would tell someone. He is rather soft-spoken and polite, speaking to his superiors with great respect and understanding, and anyone weaker than he with gentleness and grace. He is noticeably more gentle towards women, though it appears to be more part of his nature than intentional. This isn’t to say he lacks any self respect or dignity, being willing to stand up for himself if ever needed, but he isn’t one to yell or bark to assert himself, rather doing it through politer means than others probably would.
Really getting to know the man would reveal he is sweet at heart, even if he doesn’t see himself as such. He’s very mindful of other’s space and comfort, and values any relationships he does manage to forge. He didn’t have a chance to form many bonds growing up, so he does find some awkwardness and mistakes in his attempts to do so, but profusely apologizes if his actions come across as offensive or crude.
However, something lays at the depths of this man. Despite his rather polite demeanor and kind heart, when the situation turns to violence or combat, something awakens within him - a killer instinct of sorts. Even during sparring this facet of him shows face - a monstrous spirit who is willing to do anything to survive. It’s especially bad during the rare times he is pushed into a full rage, his actions seeming more like something else, something far more violent than he, is guiding his actions.
I. History» History:
The beginnings of Tsurugi was that of hardship, hunger, and violence. The boy was abandoned in one of the most crime-riddled districts of the Rukongai at a young age, the only recollection of this event being the look of fear in the eyes of the woman who left him behind to perish. Unfortunately, this boy would not so simply perish, as within him was an innate, burning desire to survive. The first few years of his life were spent barely scraping by, between being near always hungry and thirsty, to the occasional attacker who would try to kidnap him. The nameless child quickly learned that he had to be on high alert, else he would die or suffer. These hardships were met with far greater resistance - The boy ate and drank whatever he could get his hands on, even if it made him ill, any attackers being met with an abnormally strong child’s wrath and ferocity as they were beaten into the dirt.
Most who occupied the same space as him quickly learned not to try anything with him, apart from one boy who often slowed down to see him before carrying on. Eventually, this boy came to directly interact with the child, offering him actual food. Initially, he didn’t trust him enough to get close to him, the boy often leaving the food on the ground and backing away, but came to realize that what he offered him tasted far better than whatever garbage he found lying around. He one day found the boy being attacked by three thugs, such a sight being greatly angering to the child, however in what felt like a blink of an eye, he went from looking at the scene, to being held back by the older boy, and one of the thugs being brutally bruised and bloodied by his fists beneath him. Horrified and dazed, he stopped swinging his arms, letting the boy’s attackers get away.
After things settled, the boy introduced him as Toru, and asked if he wanted to come home with him, offering more food than usual and a necklace to convince him. It didn’t take much begging to cause the child to quietly nod and go along with him. Taken in to an underground warehouse that regularly took in young children found in the Rukongai, the nameless child was put to work alongside Toru, their supposed “mother” being absent for the time being. It was simple - He worked, he ate, and got to stay somewhere relatively safe. It was hard, sometimes incredibly filthy work, but it was what he had to do to survive.
Years of this life later, living as a nameless child amongst a crowd of others, one of the children living with him shoved a note in his hands in a hurry, insisting he read it immediately. Not even reading the entire thing before being consumed by anger, he bolted out of the complex, no matter how many other kids tried to stop him, they were either choked by his mere exertion of presence or shoved out of the way. It was a blackmail note directed towards their “mother” - Those scum had Toru and were threatening to kill him, his best friend who taught and cared for him.
It took hours of running, but he arrived to the spot designated in the note, only to be met with a confrontation. He chokeslammed his would-be attacker to the wall, before more stepped out, one with a knife to Toru’s neck and holding him tightly. Rage engulfed the boy as he was told to let go of the man he had pinned, the child doing so, only to get pinned to the ground by more scum. The clear leader out of the group wanted to make an example out of him, by killing him and hanging his corpse to send a message to someone who went by a name he didn’t recognize - being that he was the exact type of kid “she” would like to have. As he was being flipped over to be gutted, his rage and survival instinct hit a breaking point. Only one sentence crossed his thoughts before everything went black - “No, I have to survive.”
The next time he came to, it was dark. The moon hung over the clearing between buildings, it’s light casting down as the boy realized that he was covered in injuries, the worst gashes looking cauterized. He immediately went to look for Toru, looking at charred corpse after charred corpse, their very appearance sickening him, until he came upon one figure slumped in the corner, part of their body burned. It was Toru. He begged Toru to get up, but the boy was completely unresponsive. To the child’s young mind, he didn’t want to believe the worst outcome, he wanted his friend to wake up, and thus went to guard the alleyway from any intruders, until the boy woke up.
He intimidated or attacked anyone who got close, neglecting eating and sleeping for days, until one foe he could not defeat came along. A tall figure in the dark of night, against a sleep deprived boy; the battle went on longer than anticipated, however his attacker was incredibly powerful and trained, far more than the usual opponent he managed to at least scare away. The battle ended when the boy was pinned, however instead of killing him, the attacker revealed that she had ‘lost a son’, and affirmed that she found him, remarking she loved the deadly look in his eyes. She would take the nameless child into the alleyway, throwing him to the ground and instructing him to pick up Toru. He didn’t want to initially, claiming he just needed more time to wake up, though was met with a swift kick and the woman’s gentle yet cruel revelation of reality - that Toru was dead - and how much he was disrespecting him by not even giving him a proper burial. The boy was shaken, but complied.
Taking him elsewhere, he would be made to bury his friend and give his final goodbyes, and on the rising sun would be the first time in his life he would cry. Giving him a comforting gesture, the woman would give him a name, ‘Tsurugi’, and coldly whispered that she would make him into a better son, so he wouldn’t make such an awful mistake ever again.
After that, he was taken back to work with the children in the warehouse, however the woman who called herself Mother wouldn’t have him work with anyone else. She personally took him aside to ruthlessly train and instruct him, hardly ever getting a break or an easy day. Surprisingly, he had no more incidents of his blackout anger since Toru’s death, at times the woman seeming to try to draw it out of him but to no avail. Over time, he learned how to use his natural strength properly with his Hakuda teachings, though Mother had him try to do things that he had heard only Shinigami could do, such as Kido or Hoho. When successfully showing the ability to do both, she told him he had the potential to become one, and appeared far more ecstatic than her usual cold exterior. He was confused as to why she would want him to become one, considering she made her disdain for the Gotei plenty clear, but the only illumination on this was her revealing she herself had a Zanpakuto, though this revelation didn’t really excite or enthrall the boy.
She had secretly trained him as a Shinigami, even down to giving him a fake sword to practice Zanjutsu. Over time she realized he had no above average talent in Kido, however excelled in Hakudo and at a similar level in Zanjutsu. He didn’t feel inferior to her level of skill or any time she mentioned he was lacking, rather just going along with what made him comfortable and capable of fighting. She slowly started sending him off to work, however the tasks she assigned to him were far more dangerous and risky than his previous delivery or theft-involved jobs. He often times was fighting his mother's rivals, often times ending in their deaths or gruesome beatings, as well as him earning his scars. His brutal actions coupled with his frightening appearance led to rumors being spread about him, eventually being known as a carnivore - seen as a successful, ruthless hunter of the filth permeating the district he lived in, as well as a few others he operated in. He obtained quite a reputation despite being so young, and to such a reputation he felt nothing - He felt no pride or joy in the work he did, merely doing what he could to live and protect the weaker of the district’s residents.
One day, Mother said she was leaving on an important “trip” once more, putting an older member of their group in charge, however pulling Tsurugi aside, telling him that if a note came in ten days, he and he alone must read it. And then, she was gone, time passed, far longer than ten days.. Weeks turned to months before he woke up to a folded up note on his chest. Opening it would reveal.. That Mother was dead. She was dead, and that he was to do whatever he wished, be it stay with the children, or go off to Shin-o Academy to become a proper Shinigami, being finished off with telling him that he was a good son, and would know what to do.
He mulled on it for a few days, before deciding to leave in the middle of the night. He left, and joined the Academy. With his advanced knowledge and training, he ended up graduating earlier than normal, spending about four years, however there was one fault in him - No matter how hard he tried, how long he focused, he could not connect with his Zanpakuto. He hardly saw their face, heard their voice, much less their name. He had heard about the conflicts of the world, but was either too far or uninvolved to have personally experienced them, though they influenced his decision to join the 7th Division.

I. Racial Techniques/Abilities/Skills» Racial Abilities:
High Perception Skills: Tsurugi practically got the tendency to make sudden, rash decisions beaten out of him, and replaced with a keen eye and reflex to analyze his situation before engaging. He performs a lot of watching, be it people, environments, enemies, and more. This helps him learn more about and prepare for the things and people he may or may not interact with, though often times he does a lot of watching at a distance or personal study of things, over direct confrontation before he’s ready.
Abnormally High Amount of Natural Strength: Ever since Tsurugi was a child, he possessed a noticeable amount of strength. With such raw power, even as a small child he could thoroughly beat his opponents bruised and bloody, such an abnormality becoming more powerful as he engaged in more and more fights, and actually trained his body and mind to properly use it. He is very practiced in Hakuda in order to properly control and use this strength tactfully, and thus he uses this sheer force with control and care, as while he has the power to smash most weaker opponents to dust, he is able to pull back when needed at will under most circumstance.
