Gota is a rugged and sometimes intimidating figure. Standing well, over 6 foot in height as well as having many scars on his face and body, he is almost immediately identifiable as trouble to most normal people. Having a light, fit frame he isn't as physically impressive as other guys who might be a bit wider or more bulky, but he makes up for that deficit in the sheer negative charisma he exudes. A simple smile twists his scars and adds an aspect to his expression that generally obliterates any sort of sane look to most. Some who grow familiar with him have noted that one can adjust to the scars and find his smile quite nice, but this is far from the norm.
I. Personality Traits » Personality:
Gota, despite all appearances, is a calm and gentle sort of man in the grand scheme of things. Or at least that's what he seems to give as an impression when most run into him. Preferring to speak calmly and without getting too loud, Gota abhors violence and needless displays of aggression, to the point where he will often go out of his way to try and end a conflict before it can escalate in as efficient a way as possible, with varying success. The manner in which people find ways to clash against eachother sickens him and he feels it is unnatural to feel joy or elation in inflicting harm on another, especially killing.
Gota also despises lies and does his best to tell the truth if possible. Which admittedly is a little easy given it's hard for im to understand things at times to the point where his friends often call him 'Clueless'.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Gota is that he is hypocritical much to his own displeasure. While he has his preferences and his sense of morals, he somehow always finds himself in positions to violate them. The world is a hard place to live and even as he abhors these things he finds himself pushed to them in order to survive, fit in with those around him, and even try to enhance his relationships with those he is close to. Because of this, he particularly hates himself: Namely his inability to find solutions that keep him from violating these testaments to his morals. » Likes:
Cooked meat, Stories at Night, Drinking Games. » Dislikes:
Liars, Violent People, Nosy People.
I. Character History » History
"Those born without talent are cursed with reality.
The reality of clawing for life every day."
Survival. His family was always poor. From what he could try to remember while he was rasied initially in Germany, his mother fled to Norway in hopes of an easier life, but it always eluded them. So often did she move around that he began to realize she'd likely been doing it since before he was born. He along with his three siblings did their best to support their mother who picked up an illness in her travels and was often too sick to work a full day's labor. From place to place they moved, always changing where they lived, always changing their names. As the days went by, he stopped remembering what he was supposed to be called, but in his heart he decided that he liked one particular name among the flurry of others. Gota.
All the same, as he began to grow, he began to notice that as they moved from place to place, there were belongings that Mother always took with her. A special bag that she never allowed them to look into. But finally, the sickness claimed her, having not survived on the ride to Iceland: A place that she had hoped would finally be suitable for them.
Gota's oldest sister: Tsara at that point, took on the role of Mother and soon everyone was doing what they could to earn money once they arrived in their new home. Tsara would work in a clothing factory near the harbor and sew numerous types of clothing. Her kind boss would often allow her to take home some clothes with defects or imperfections for them to wear.
Iko, the second oldest, spent her time doing tricks and performances on the street hoping for the charity of strangers. The Youngest of his siblings, other than himself: Chijo, would guard their sister. Being Gota's only brother, he respected and looked up to Chijo as he always found ways to get people to leave their sister alone without having to resort to violence. Whether it was intimidation, talking people down, or outsmarting them, Chijo always seemed to have an answer and once he was old enough, he did his best to help him. but in most cases, he simply wound up following his brother's lead.
It was a few months after the death of their mother that one of them finally had the heart to open the bag that Mother had always forbade them from opening and inside they found the most peculiar of objects. Five shiny silver objects like five-pointed spokes. Gota couldn't believe their luck, they could sell them and be able to find a decent place to live and plenty of food!
But that excitement turned to shame when he saw the looks on the faces of his siblings. They were appalled at the idea of selling the trinkets, being the only things they had remaining from their mother. Ashamed of himself, he took it upon himself to figure out what they were. Although Tsara would not lett him take any of them, for fear he would sell them, he made drawings of them instead and began to ask around the area. Hopefully, if he could find out what they were, he could figure out why Mother had cherished them. And he didn't take long to find his answer.
They were Quincy Crosses. At first he didn't quite believe it himself, but as he began to ask around for information about them, he was fascinated by the past that was ingrained in them. Genocide, wars, and all kinds of stories of long-gone peoples. His siblings, although initially skeptical, promptly began to share in his enthusiasm at his discovery. Had their mother been a quincy? Had she intended to give these crosses to them when they were old enough? Almost immediately, his older sister Iko began trying to looking for someone to teach them how to be Qunicies, but as it were it seemed that it was a rare thing. Not only that, but people seemed uncomfortable around the subject.
But they were determined, and by Gota's fourteenth birthday they had found their teacher: An old man by the name of Tartusa Gilde, a drunk that often could be found in the local tavern. It was only after seeing Iko perform with the cross on her wrist that he had ever spoken to any of the children, and once he found out where she'd gotten it, he took pity on the children and began to do his best to train them. At first they seemed....to make no progress. The man was a horrible drunk and would often fall asleep in the midst of his own lessons. But as the months dragged on, he slowly began to sober up. His lessons became more coherent and consistent, and soon they began to feel they were ACTUALLY learning something! In no time Chijo was the first to begin showing signs of his new powers and Tsara was close behind him! However, even as their siblings continued to progress and grow in strength: Gota and Iko were never able to get the hang of it. The only thing that kept him from despair was seeing how it affected Iko.
Seeing his sister distraught and disconnected from the thing that linked the other two siblings to their Mother, she fell into a depression, and soon she began to stop singing and performing on the streets. What was once happy songs and dances had devolved into sad, wistful looks. Begging instead of earning the money. Gota could barely bear to see it. While Tsara and Chijo began to earn money by offering their services as quincy to drive off hollows, Gota put all of his effort into trying to cheer up his sister. Little by little, he could see her health beginning to fail as she lost herself to despair.
More than anything in the world, he wished he could trade something, anything for her to gain that connection she so desired with their mother.
And then.... overnight, it was as if his wish had been answered. All at once, his sister suddenly seemed to grasp the lessons that the old drunk had been trying to instill in them. She began to manifest a bow, and suddenly she was able to use the power that had eluded her for so long. For the first time in forever, he saw his sister Iko smiling, not even caring that his own powers had still failed to manifest.
Now that all three of his siblings worked with the town guard, Gota began to find himself at home. Cooking, cleaning, keeping things in order as well as helping manage the money that his siblings made as well as learning basic first aid from some of the other villagers and Tartusa to help his siblings recover from injuries they accrued during their work, he even became good enough that from time to time some of their neighbors would come to the house so he could fix them up. It wasn't long until old man Tartusa began to show up more and more. Before long, he was like a Father they had never had and Gota saw pride in the man's eyes in the skill he had managed to pass onto his siblings. It finally felt as if it was a place they could belong.
However, as his siblings and Tartusa worked on their quincy powers, it began to draw the ire of the town around them. Though they depended on them to help drive away the rare hollows, the recent conflict deeper inland had ravaged the area and many refugees from the conflict between Shadowfall and Vanguard moved to the coastline to try and escape the conflict. Even after the conflict had resolved, and as they did, the siblings soon came under scrutiny as did others in the little port village who had spiritual abilities. Fearing that they would be drawn back into a conflict if either side discovered active quincy int he area, resentment and fear began to brew.
And then, one night, Tartusa was waking them up in the middle of the night. Hurriedly trying to get all of them dressed and ready to move. A crowd had begun to gather outside of their houses, and he focused on trying to get Gota and his siblings out before they began to cause trouble. But Chijo was sure he could talk them all down. Ignoring Tartusa's warnings, Gota watched his brother walk out into the flicker of the lit torches that the townspeople had gathered. He could hear that soft, charming voice that had calmed so many nerves before. But what had once been words of charisma and charm, to the townspeople it was simply ash from the young man's mouth. A rock suddenly struck him from the crowd, and Gota watched as his brother dropped to his knees. Clutching his bleeding forehead.
He was shocked, unable to react. But not his siblings. Almost immediately, Tsara rushed in to try and protect him as more rocks began to be thrown as Chijo nursed his bleeding head. She shouted, trying to remind the people that they had helped them, protected them. But a rock finally silenced her, embedding into her left temple. Unlike her brother, she was slain on the spot. It didn't even register what had happened. The first to react as the crowd went into a sudden roar was Iko.
In a flash like Gota had never seen, the silhouette of his sister was suddenly glaring with light. A halo and brilliant wings formed from his enraged sister like nothing he had seen before. even Tartusa seemed shocked. In a rage, he watched Iko suddenly throw herself into the crowd and before he knew it, Tartusa grabbed him and ran, evena s Gota struggled. Yelling that they needed to go back for his siblings. He watched as the crowd rushed Iko, as arrows of blinding light cut into them. Before long, the scene vanished as they fled into the night. And as he yelled, struggling against the man who he had come to know like a father: He swore he could FEEL Iko breathe her last. And something deep inside of him wept and then burst into a rage when he felt her soul slip from her body.
For the first time in his life, he felt spiritual energy coursing through his body. But suddenly, he felt something hit him in the back of his head and he was knocked out.
When he finally came to, he was rocking. Not being rocked by a person, but the soft, subtle shift of a deck beneath his body. As he sat up, he realized that he was on a boat. Tartusa had gotten him to a small sailing boat and he could no longer see the shore. Almost immediately upon him, Gota shouted, furious that he had left his siblings behind. But the man explained that his siblings had been fatally wounded, and that Iko was a goner rushing into that many people.
As he heard this, Gota felt a white rage burning inside of his chest. And once again he felt spiritual energy begin to roar to life inside of him, before suddenly he was slapped by his mentor. Jolted from his rage. That energy died down, and for the rest of the ride, over the several days it took them to sail away from that place, he simply mourned in silent tears for the loss of his family.
When at long last they made it to land, Tartusa explained that he had to leave Gota.He began to say how he blamed himself for teaching them that accursed art. And he spoke of being glad that the power that had awakened in Gota was not the power of a quincy. Gota was confused at first, but he began to realize that he could FEEL the energy inside of him. That energy that reminded him of his sister Iko. Power. Before Gota could ask him anything else, the man pulled him into a hug, and pressed something into his hand. A soft, whispered wish of luck, and then the man turned and left. Gota was far too stunned to do anything but watch as the man walked right out of his life. Leaving him in the grief his siblings left behind, watching as Tartusa vanished, pulling out a bottle of whiskey before vanishing from sight. And Gota felt in his heart that he would never see the man again. As if he could SENSE the shame in him.
Over the next few weeks, after figuring out where Tartusa had taken them, he realized that they had landed somewhere in Ireland and Gota soon got himself a job as a housekeeper for a wealthy Lawyer. Slowly, even with the weight of loss in his heart, and that smothering sensation of helplessness. He found himself.....strangely...pushing past the helplessness he had felt as a child. Somehow, he felt warmed by the memory of his siblings, especially Iko. He began to speak like he remembered his brother Chijo doing. He could put on a brave face like Tsara once did. And he even began to learn how to sing and dance like Iko once did. All the while, he began to uncover the strange powers that he had garnered. As his Seventeenth birthday came to pass, he learned more and more how to use his abilities. Unlike his siblings, he wasn't able to use Reishi, but he WAS able to use Reiryoku like most other races, especially in being able to fill people with energy and vigor.
Much like how his siblings were able to lift him up, he found himself especially talented in lifting the will and spirits of others, and to a limited degree able to bolster his own abilities. the Lawyer that he worked for soon began to recognize his abilities and noted that they seemed similar to spells that his own family had practiced in. As such, Gota soon was taught by his Employer how to use Celtic Runes in order to focus his spiritual energy and his ability to help others. By the time he was Eighteen, Gota began to branch slightly from these teachings. While the traditional teachings of rune magic helped him off the ground, he found that his power while similar did not quite fit these traditional guidelines, and in his own time he began to experiment and develop his own abilities with runes.
With his abilities he began to help not only around the Lawyer's home, but also began to follow in the footsteps of his siblings and joined the local guard to respond to hollows or other supernatural hazards at a moment's notice. But as time went on and his nineteenth birthday grew nearer, he began to realize that he couldn't feel fufilled. The attempt at settling down he and his silings had attempted weighed heavy in his mind and before long he quit his job. It was in this fashion that he found his newest calling as a wanderer, moving from place to place and protecting people along the way.
I. Equipment » Equipment: Quincy Cross
: A Trinket that has purely sentimental value to Gota as he is incapable of utilizing it. However, to Quincy this item is quite useful as it is an old but well-made quincy cross that halves the mental and spiritual strain of drawing in and manipulating reishi.
I. Natural Abilities & Skills » Skills: Survivalist Medic
Even beyond his Rune spells, Gota is capable of using his knowledge and experience as a healer to bandage, clean, and dress even severe wounds with a proficiency one would usually find in a Trauma Care setting. This however exclusively applies to wound care and Gota has limited if nonexistent medical knowledge in pathology, diagnostics, or really anything other than putting people back together after a battle along with basic disinfecting and antiseptic use.
I. Other Supernatural Abilities » Powers: Soul Runes
Using Celtic Runes, Gota has developed his own spellcraft using Runes in order to manipulate his reiryoku in order to augment himself and others. This particular type of Runecraft seems uniquely specific in that he is only able to use his Rune Magic to it's full potential when used on living targets and as such his Skills are always considered 1 value lower than normal when used on inanimate objects or his general environment. Additionally, while he can gift people with powers or curses, he cannot perform attacks such as bursts of flame or beams of energy. As such, this ability is less about the utilization of power and more the Granting of powers to himself or Others. Runes can be applied instantly bt physical contact, or can be ejected from Gota's hands by actually throwing the Runes out like a whip. » Pure Abilities: Soul Rune: Augen Im Herzen
(Eyes in the Heart)
Runes intended for medical use. Etching the runes for 'Eyes' into a person's heart Gota is capable of sensing and seeing the flow of spirit energy through a person's body and as such is able to detect disturbances in the flow caused by injuries or other maladies as it serves as a general body scan. When used on inanimate objects, it has the ability to turn the object into a sort of ward, sensing nearby disturbances in the spirit energy around it. At any point, Gota can focus and tap into the runes he has inscribed into a person to check on their status, regardless of distance.
Scales off of Power Control.
At Beginner, this allows the sensing of basic injuries and obvious details similar to a very rough X ray. Inanimate objects allow wards with a 5 meter range.
At Adept he is able to perform more detailed scans, similar to an X ray with contrast. Inanimate wards have a range of 20 meters.
At Advanced not only is he able to scan someone with the precision of a CT scanner, but he is also able to pick up distributions of foreign chakra in the target person or area. Wards have a range of 100 meters.
At Elite these scans can pick up the details one might find in a high power MRI or better! Not only can foreign reiatsu be detected in a subject but Soul Rune: Tor Zum Sieg
(Gate to Victory)
Runes which implant a sudden burst of energy into the target to allow them to execute a sudden fast burst of speed similar to shunpo or sonido. This spell etches the word for 'Gate' into the target, granting them the power to use rapid movement. This power when used by Gota or those it is inscribed into is based on Gota's Power Control. For others, it is based on this skill at the time it is applied or reapplied.
At Beginner this burst of speed is small, at most allowing increases of speed over very short distances up to about 50 meters at most and with a margin of error of about 10 meters.
At Adept this burst can reach distances of up to 300 meters, with a margin of error of about 5 meters.
At Advanced this burst can reach a full Kilometer and with a mere margin of error of about 1 meter.
At Elite this burst can span several Kilometers and can be accurately executed with a margin of error of only a few inches.
At Master, this burst can span several hundred Kilometers and can be done with pinpoint accuracy.
At Grandmaster these bursts can span half the width of China (about 2500 km) and has no margin for error in the slightest. Soul Runes: Herz Aus Flammen
(Heart of Flames)
By inscribing the runes for 'Bravery' into a target, Gota is capable of sharing his own resolve and will with another. So long as a target remains branded with these runes, they will be able to channel spiritual energy into them to gain access to Gota's Will skill (At the time of application, Gota can also choose to give limited access to any skill leevel below his own). This however does drain spirit energy to do and is similar to maintaining a low-level Bakudo spell.Soul Runes: Chreckliche Nacht
By inscribing the runes for 'Darkness' into a target, Gota is capable of clouding the senses and robbing a target of their sense of sight and Reikaku (Spiritual sense). Individuals of equal tier simply have these senses reduced by about 75%. Targets of superior tier merely have their senses reduced by 25%. Targets at least 2 tiers above Gota (ex 1-5 vs Gota's 3-1) will simply have slightly blurred senses as if their prescription were slightly off. Soul Runes: Die Ernte
This is not so much a spell as it is an effect of Gota's spellcraft itself. Gota can sever the connection with a target branded by his Soul Runes by dragging them back into himself, draining a chunk of spiritual energy in the process. Targets of inferior Tier will be significantly tired out as if having fought at full strength for several hours. Targets of Equal or only slightly superior Tier (within the same Tier, or only 1-2 rungs above) will feel moderately fatigued, as if fighting at full strength for half an hour. Individuals beyond that level are only slightly inconvenienced, as if having run a few blocks or exerted their full spiritual pressure for about ten minutes. This effect is multiplied by the number of Rune Spells engraved in the target.
If at least 5 spells are active on a target, their soul will not pass on and instead will be absorbed into Gota (Elite Power Control)(Only requires 1 spell at Grandmaster)
This process happens automatically if a target dies with runes applied to them.
