Howl of the Sea [Vanyel, Sabre]
Mon Jul 01, 2024 9:22 pm
VANYEL XIAOYANG
He still didn't completely trust her -- in part, that was the reason behind what he was doing. He wanted to try and figure out more about her, the powers that Kenichi had mentioned to him, learn the extent of them, and study them in general. From what he understood through Kenichi's explanation, she had some kind of water-based abilities -- and, from his experience, those were pretty rare at times.
While he waited for her, he found himself looking through multiple different books as well as various sources on his phone, writing down notes and possibilities of those powers in a notebook, mixed in with various illustrations and notes of other ideas that had come to his head.
Details of fire and now water, the physical, literal aspects of it, what it represented in various parts of his home culture, as well as rekindling old memories of abilities he had developed in the past and how to re-create them now. Erlang Shen, the Monkey King's Eyes of Truth, the Jade Emperor -- his mind went to every possible corner for inspiration and guidance.

Well, she couldn't say she'd expected to get such a request from the man. Not at this juncture at the very least.
She understood very well the type of man that Vanyel was, but she had expected a confrontation of a different sort. Something more coinciding with an interaction with his boss Rita. Either directly before or after. A warning of some kind.
Which could only mean that this little rendezvous was about something else. The footsteps of the arrancar were surprisingly light. With her own innate feline grace, she slipped into the room with Vanyel and let her attention briefly shift towards the volume in his hands. Even from her perspective, she raised a brow as she parsed what little she could see from where she was standing.
Ah. So this was Academic in nature.
"You called?"

VANYEL XIAOYANG
Despite his focus on the notes and ideas he wanted to pen, he heard the door creaking and saw it moving out of the corner of his eye, causing his attention to shift toward Sabre as she came in. Turning to face her, Vanyel closed the book and locked his phone, stashing it away in his pocket as he looked toward her with a relatively neutral expression.
"Kenichi told me that you've got water-based powers, and, in my experience, those are pretty rare compared to other elements. I've been wanting to do a case study on them for my own reasons, and, you fit the bill."
Setting the book aside and tucking the notebook under his arm, he stood up, and started to move toward the doorway.
"If you're fine with giving me a demonstration, then let's head outside. Floodin' the place wouldn't be super productive. Plus, I've got some questions about your powers. Mostly just etymological, philosophical, and metaphorical stuff, but, still important to me. Overall, I want to learn more about how Arrancar powers operate."
Despite the curt and to the point attitude, his voice was still level, and he didn't seek to dismiss her entirely. There was genuineness to him wanting to learn about her powers, even if some of them were for his own ultimately selfish goals. There were a lot of potential aspects that he was curious about, especially since she was an Arrancar, a race that was so different to humans -- he wondered just how much.

So she had been correct. Though perhaps in a more abstract way than she'd initially imagined. She had presumed maybe he had some questions about Hollows, but this was still interesting. "A case study. Hm." She tilted her head slightly to the side and let her hand rest on her hip as she took a moment to regard him. "I confess. I'm not one who enjoys showing off my abilities. I've always hated loud, obnoxious fools who show off what they can do. Hollows like that always brought trouble. I prefer not to use my abilities unless necessary." she noted quietly, closing her eyes for a moment as she leaned a bit to the side and let her arms fold under her chest as she ... considered.
"That said, I suppose with you being a close friend of Kenichi's. I guess I don't mind showing you things a little." She murmured. She was sure thatif Kenichi were here, he'd probably have plenty to say. Hm. Actually., Its possible that Kenichi probably already DID talk her up a bit. So trusting and loose lipped. She blushed. It was .... an adorable trait of his.
"Perhaps Kenichi has not told you as much as I imagined. My control over my abilities is very precise. As I said. I don't enjoy being too flashy. Inside would be perfectly safe. But if you would be more comfortable, it can suffice." She conceded simply. She wasn't going to begrudge him taking precautions, certainly. And so with a nod of her head, she gestured towards the door. "and as for arrancar. I'm afraid I can only provided limited insight, and what I've garnered from encountering them. I'm only a fresh Arrancar myself actually. I have Kenichi to thank for that. But I'll provide what I can."

VANYEL XIAOYANG
Huh. Well, that was something they shared, at least. He wasn't really too keen on showing off, unlike Kenichi, who never had any problem with the matter. He was, however, mildly relieved to hear that she would at least show him. Even if she didn't, he could always observe her own casual usage of it and take notes. Seeing her blush, though, only made him roll his eyes.
"Somethin' is better than nothin'."
Vanyel opened a small notebook, writing down a note about that precision, as well as a few other minor details more personal to his own findings and thoughts, rather than Sabre specifically. Water was fitting for an Arrancar or Hollow, for varying reasons. He wanted to see how many of them coincided with his own thoughts, his home's culture, and the general ones that, realistically, anyone could think of.
So, as they made their way outside, Vanyel found himself taking a deep breath of the fresh air, before setting his notebook on the ground nearby, a small film of energy wrapping around it to prevent any potential residual damage from the water. Once being sure of that, Vanyel looked back to Sabre, before spreading his arms slightly, keeping an open stance.
"First demonstration: hit me with it."

She smiled just a bit wider at his reaction. "Less often than you would think. Learning an incorrect lesson is worse than learning nothing at all at times. Operating on incomplete information can mean winding up with a blade through your heart." She countered placidly. No real inclination. No chastizement, or fondness. It was a plain statement of fact, correcting him as he seemed to mull over her words and jot things down in that little notebook of his.
All the same, she followed him outside and watched as he set the book aside and even set up a bit of protection. He certainly was cautious. However, what he did next caused her head to cant to the side and furrow her brows ever so slightly as he provided instruction. Hit him? "Hm. An unwise manner of phrasing." She statd as she gently touched her fingertip to the pommel of her zanpaku'to. "I will need to ressurect in order to manipulate water. I'm afraid that since becoming an arrancar, my powers are restricted in the casual sense of things. So do pardon me for a moment." She hummed.
"Aplasta." She recited, as carapace spread around her head, forming more of her mask, one half of her sabertooth's skull forming ontop of the horns on her head, as well as armor running down the length of her spine. But most notably: A black cloak, a reminder of her status once as a gillian.
The release was subtle. Quiet. Though he would most certainly be able to feel the sudden swell of her spiritual energy. It wasn't violent or explosive. It prowled into one's senses instead, as if to sneak up on you.
The air gleamed, a thin strande of water, almost too thin to even catch in the air, lashed out between the two of them. A thin whip of fluid that snapped out and cracked down the front of Vanyel's frame, the sudden crack of that whip aiming to slide down the front of his chest, and cutting through his shirt. It would sting, incredibly so, but she tempered the force such that it would not leave any sort of lasting mark. But most notably, the attack was carried out without a motion on her part. It was incredibly fast and sudden. Certainly something most found alarming coming from a woman of Sabre's size.
"Is there anything in particular you are wanting? An attack thats fast? Strong? Complex? Or are you wanting information about how the power effects me?" She ventured, peering at him through the eyes of her mask.

VANYEL XIAOYANG
She needed to release to use her powers? That seemed counterintuitive. But, then again, from what he'd learned about Amaranta, some Arrancar had other things that they used instead of their powers, or, sometimes, even with them. He did remember he mentioning something about their swords basically being the core of their power. So, as Sabre went through the ritual, Vanyel paid close attention, seeing if there was anything particularly of note when observing.
Despite it being a release form, it didn't come with the explosion of pressure that he'd felt when Amaranta demonstrated. It was quiet, and that was unsettling. It gave him chills, like someone was watching him, even though Sabre was right in front of him. Like a shark, sneaking around the depths to find something to eat.
Creepy.
He stood still and watched as the water whip formed, lashing out quickly and tearing the front of his shirt and leaving a small mark on his chest. So, she had enough skill to at least condense and pressurize it, but that didn't give him all that he wanted to know.
"Right now, things that reflect the physical properties of water. The feeling of it, the weight, the pressure, the temperature, surface tension, things like that. After that, we'll get into the metaphorical and personal meaning."

She paused for a moment and canted her head slightly towards Vanyel as he listed what it was he actually was looking for. Altering the properties of the water? She furrowed her brows slightly behind her mask. But as he went on, his explanation made a bit more sense. "And how would this benefit you?" She asked with a slight tilt of her head as she regarded vanyel. "Truth be told. I had expected this to be some sort of spar. Experiencing something firsthand is often a better way to understand something. But this ...laundry list of aspects you've come up with.... just how is it that you expect to learn more about this? And you do understand that some of the things I show you will be things you're outright entirely incapable of , yes?" She ventured with a tilt of her head. Simply because two individuals had fire as their abilities, did not mean they would have the same capabilities.
She paused for a moment and crouched slightly, to get on his level.
"Why don't you tell me what it is you've managed to do on your own, and then we can work from there?"

VANYEL XIAOYANG
"We can spar to do this, that's just what I'm wanting to get notes on."
He knew that experiencing something firsthand was the best way to understand something, most of the time. For him, it was about getting an understand of the properties of water, as well as the metaphorical and personal aspects. In his notes, thoughts, research, and practice, he had come to a realization through dualism, as well as a manner of how to express that.
So, in response to Sabre asking what he had managed to do on his own, Vanyel's eye twitched, and he lifted a hand from his side, pointing a finger at her. An orb of energy focused and compressed at the tip of it, and a focused Cero-like blast erupted from it. Upon contact, it would feel like a crashing wave, despite its size.
"One of two. The second one is...utilizing and manipulating the properties of my energy to act like water. Make it more adaptable, flexible, and dampening, like a shield of sorts, if that makes sense."

Sabre raised a brow slightly and canted her head a bit to the side as he seemed to go with her own suggestions. But even so, she was beginning to wonder exactly why this was taking place. What was he just making a list of powers he was trying to emulate? A sigh escaped her as she reached up and rubbed at her eyes, she truly didn't understand humans sometimes. All the same, her body flickered as he fired that beam, promptly darting to the side without even opening her eyes as he fired that blast at her, allowing it to slam into something else in the place.
"I'm beginning to think that perhaps I'm not someone suitable to teach you about this. If thats how your power is manifesting, then we have two very different abilities. Theres quite a bit of difference between manipulating water and producing energy that behaves like water." She murmured with furrowed brows. It truly was a ... bizarre power. Sure, she'd seen things like it. Usually not with water though. Fire. Loghtning. Those were elements more energy based anyway.
But Energy water? A hybrid between energy and water seemed.... odd. "Your applications seem more like spells than a hollow's ability. Have you considered seeking out a shinigami?"
