VANYEL XIAOYANG

It had been nagging Vanyel for months now. That one tiny, innocuous detail that Violet had let slip while she had been staying in Japan with him. It was so tiny, yet it stuck with him so much that, now, he finally felt like he needed to talk about it. So, with a sharp exhale, he walked through the house to the shower, knocking a few times, before opening the door slightly.

"Vi? I wanna talk to you about something. Once you're done, can you come out and sit on the couch?"

He waited for her response, before closing the door and heading back to the couch, sighing. He had figured that it was something she didn't want to talk about. But, with how much that one line had been bugging him, and the other smaller things that he'd noticed since he started living with her, he felt like it was long overdue for them to talk about it. He loved her, he trusted her, but he also wanted to make sure that he knew just as much about her as she did about him.

Violet finished bathing herself ten minutes ago and had just been enjoying the cold water running down her hair and skin when she heard a knock. “Yes?” she called out. Vanyel opened the door and requested to talk about something. “Oh, okay,” Violet said and then turned off the water. That was... worrying. If Vanyel needed to talk, she wasn’t going to be able to relax, and letting time go by with that on her mind would only make her think the worst, only to find out that her hair clogged the shower drain way too much, or something like that… In fact…

Violet reached down and checked the shower drain to make sure that wasn’t it, realizing that the hair catcher she had made sure to buy was doing its job. She emptied that into the bathroom trash and put it back. Violet grabbed a towel and half-dried off, got dressed, and walked out with clothes sticking to her after not taking enough time to truly dry.

Violet went over to the couch and sat down next to him, fiddling with the bottom of her nightgown. It was obvious she was nervous. She had that look on her face, the one he had come to recognize when she was in a mental panic. "Sorry... Did I do something stupid again?"

VANYEL XIAOYANG

As he watched her come out, he noticed her clothes sticking, and he chuckled softly, reaching to gently touch her hand, scooting a bit closer to her. He hadn't expected her to hurry like that.

"Hun, you didn't need to speedrun getting dressed. I could'a waited."

However, he noticed that look, and the warm smile faded to concern for a moment, before his other hand reached around to gently rest on her shoulder. He knew that she always tended to assume the worst, so, he shook his head lightly, leaning in to kiss her cheek.

"No, no. You didn't do anythin' wrong. I just wanted to talk to you about something. I...should have asked sooner, really. But, I just...didn't want to make you feel uncomfortable or upset with me. When...when we were staying at my place in Japan, I remember you mentioning somethin' when we were getting ready to make French toast. You said that your mom made it once, and when she found out you liked it, never made it again."

Vanyel's hand tightened ever so slightly around Violet's, holding onto her, as if to try and ensure himself that she wouldn't run away for what he was about to ask.

"...Can you tell me about your family? I've told you basically everything about mine, but, I don't know a lot about yours. I just have a feeling it was...not good. I didn't want to put a rift between us and end up pushing you away, so, I...I never asked. I won't judge you, and it won't make me see you any differently. I just...want to know more about you."

And, given what he knew about her, also use it as a way to learn what kind of fucked-up notions he needed to work on un-teaching her. He wanted her to be the best she could be -- to be the happy, smiling woman that he loved so much.

Vanyel’s touching her hand turned into holding it when she closed her fingers around his. “Yeah, but now, you don’t need to wait… It sounded important, so I wasn't gonna make you wait. Besides, I'm all washed up. I was just playing with the water when you came in.”

His attempt at kissing her cheek was also foiled when she turned her head to make sure he hit the right target. Her lips were over HERE, damn it. When she did that, however, her blush deepened and she looked away shyly while he explained that she hadn't done anything wrong. That was a relief... Sorta. Then what did he want to talk about?

Violet's demeanor did not change. She was stuck, as still as an image, with those same wide eyes and that terrified look on her face. 'He said he wouldn't judge me... He said he wouldn't judge me...' she thought, gathering the particles of confidence she had to try and answer his question. "Mom didn't want me to get fat, so I couldn't eat a lot."

"What... exactly... are you wanting... to know?" Violet said, each word forced out through sheer will over a desire to speak them. She knew what he was curious about... sorta. She lived in her own version of denial where the abuse was warranted, deserved... her fault.

VANYEL XIAOYANG

Her turning her head to make sure he kissed her lips always brought a smile to his face and made him chuckle a little. It was adorable, how couldn't he like that? Rubbing her shoulder, Vanyel scooted a bit closer to her, his arm moving from her shoulder to her waist as he held her close to him, his other hand gripping hers with firmness, yet still managing to be gentle.

"First off, she has a stupid line of logic. As long as you keep a good balance of exercise and food, weight gain isn't that big of an issue. But, second...as much as you're comfortable sharing. I...I won't lie, part of me is wanting to see if there are any stupid notions that your parents put in your head that I can show you the truth of. But, more than anything, I want us to be transparent with each other."

Part of had a feeling that there wasn't much, if anything he could do that would comfort her. He knew that he had been right, at least partly, deep down. She didn't seem to want to talk about it, he could recognize that terrified gaze from a mile away. But, he persisted, for both her sake, and his own.

Violet nuzzled her cheek against his shoulder when he brought her closer. Thinking about how to answer his question was hard. What story could she tell? What memory should she share? She didn’t know.

“I… Well, um…” she started, but hesitated again. "Dad is a Quincy... Mom is too.. I had a sister, but she died fighting hollows... We lived in Texas, in one of those big houses on about fifty acres of land. The family made money off agriculture... crops and cattle." Violet was just picking random details, avoiding any serious description that could be judged.

VANYEL XIAOYANG

Despite the reassurance he tried to provide with his hand around her waist, his gaze still held worry and concern. Nevertheless, he listened closely. Both of her parents being Quincy made sense, but what shocked him the most was the amount of land she said she lived in. Doing the visualization in his head, his eyes widened at the sheer scale of her childhood home, his surprise coming out in a whisper.

"Holy shit, that's a big property..."

But, he composed himself. His arm gripped her waist just the slightest bit tighter, before he sighed softly. He could tell that she wasn't sure what to tell him, much less about the details. He wanted them to be transparent with each other, so, he needed to cut the bullshit and just ask her what he wanted to know.

"...Tell me what happened in your childhood. Your mom not wanting you to 'get fat' doesn't make sense for her to ban something like French toast outright. What...what did they do to you?"

It was a question that brought hesitance to even Vanyel himself. He wanted to know, but, at the same time, part of him didn't. Just from that one note he knew about her mom, he already didn't like her, but...something told him that it was going to get a lot worse. He had a sinking feeling in his gut about this, but he wasn't even sure if it was his general paranoia and anxiety right now, or if it was an ill omen.

Where Memories Sleep [Vanyel, Violet] Empty Re: Where Memories Sleep [Vanyel, Violet]

There it was… Any time she answered questions like this, before she came to the City of Light, people treated her strangely afterwards. She was always honest, and that proved to be a problem, since her ‘friends’ would start asking her mocking questions, giggling behind her back, or comment on her appearance in negative ways. All of that led to panic attacks, bulimia, and more issues with her family. These questions never ended well. However, her parents weren’t here, and if all the books and movies were right about love, and Vanyel did love her like he said, she should be able to be honest without feeling any repercussions like that.

Violet pulled away and put a small bit of distance between them before fiddling with her fingers. She took a deep breath, and slowly exhaled before raising her gaze back to him. "People said my family was weird... We didn't live like other people did. We kept isolated, mostly, and because of being Quincy, our traditions didn't fit well with a lot of the others. The French Toast thing was just part of that. Momma said if I was ever to get married to a good, wealthy man, I had to look the part of a woman who deserved it. I had to be beautiful, perfect, and so she tried to teach me how to cook, clean, keep my diet right. If I liked somethin', like French Toast or ice cream or cake, she didn't cook it cause she knew I'd end up fat and unattractive to men, and I'd never get married... I just..." Violet looked shamefully to the ground. "I just never did anything right... It's why they don't love me anymore and sent me away."

Seeing Vanyel verbally freeze up, Violet felt compelled to continue. Even as he tried hugging her, she was resistant, as if she needed to explain more and justify everything she had said. She took both of his hands in her own and held on to him, smiling. "No, no, no... It's okay. They were trying to help me. Daddy trained me a lot to be a Quincy so I could honor the Gardner family, but I failed. No matter how hard I worked, I couldn't summon a spirit weapon or use steigen or gebet, so to make me stronger, I had to sleep in the shed, but because it happened too many times, I'd get sick and prove I wasn't physically strong enough to be a good Quincy. Since I couldn't do that, Mom thought being beautiful was the better choice. I wasn't a soldier, so I could marry one, but... I... Uh...."

Violet's voice began trailing off, as if she wasn't connecting the dots in her own mind anymore. She created so many reasons and excuses for her family's behavior that she had convinced herself it was normal, but when she said it out loud, it sounded insane. And since she had so much more of it in her head that she was wanting to explain, she couldn't find the words that made it sound normal. "Wait, no..." she said and turned toward nothing as she tried to collect her thoughts. "When my sister died... she was a prodigy, so I needed to fill her shoes to honor the family, but... he didn't hit Jasmine... because she was good at everything. Jasmine made the family proud, so when she died... I, um... I couldn't replace... They never wanted me, Mom said that already."

"I don't... understand," Violet grabbed the locked of her hair between her fingers, gripping so tight that her hand shook. She could have ripped her own hair out if she pulled, but she was just trying to think... "If they loved me, then why did I sleep in the shed... Jasmine didn't, or maybe I wasn't born yet. I... didn't have any toys either... No, wait, right. I remember. Mom said if I wanted Daddy to love me, I had to become a good Quincy, so since I didn't, and Dad would hit me so... so much. But Mom protected me... She hired a healer to make the bruises go away..."

VANYEL XIAOYANG

Vanyel was stunned. The more she said, the angrier he got. Not at her, god no. She was the victim. Every admonishing thing she said about herself made him sick to his stomach. There was a saying that he heard growing up, something along the lines of "all children deserve parents, but not all parents deserve children," and this was a prime case. But, even with all of his anger, something else welled up inside him at hearing her story.

Heartbreak.

What made it all so much worse was that she smiled during it. She tried to justify these...fucking horrid actions, and it only made him grip onto her hands harder. The more excuses she tried to make for them, the more she tried to lie to herself about it, it only made Vanyel's hands and body visibly tremble in rage.

I'll kill them.

How could they do that to their daughter?

I'll kill them.

Even his own mother, as horrible as she had been when he was growing up and taking things out on him when his dad left, never did some of the things that Violet's parents had done to her.

They're dead.

As Violet went to grab her hair, Vanyel's trembling hands slowly reached up to take them in his own, his eyes wide and staring downward, though there was no focus to his gaze. It looked as if he was staring off into space, his eyes so full of hate and rage. He was still hearing everything, but only specific words started to process.

"Didn't hit Jasmine."

Dead.

His own thoughts started to mix with Violet's words, his fingers tightening around hers, slowly bringing them to his lips.

"Never wanted me."

FUCKING DEAD.

"Sleep in shed."

Everything was mixing together, and he couldn't stop it.

Right now, it was taking everything in his power to stay seated where he was.

"Bruises."

"Hired a healer to make the bruises go away."

His arms trembled more and more as he held Violet's hands close to him, trying to keep himself composed. The noise in his head was growing louder and louder, his own thoughts mixing with words and terms from Violet's story, what he wanted to respond with, what he wanted to do. His head was going a mile a minute, it was like a storm that just didn't stop, but he could hear one thing loud and clear.

Then, without thinking, Vanyel wrapped his arms around Violet. He held her close to his chest, holding her firmly and safely, despite his body still trembling. Finally, the storm cleared, and, all he could say was...

"...It's not your fault."

Every time Vanyel pulled her closer or held her hands tighter, Violet kept trying to explain more and more. She tried to justify everything that happened to her, as it broke down in her own mind. As Vanyel’s mind fell to chaos, Violet’s entire reality was being cracking under the pressure of logics she had learned from being away from that horrid home. And finally, as that reality shattered under the weight of her new life, falling to shards around her, she was pulled into the arms of the man she loved.

"...It's not your fault."

"But... I... thought..." Violet struggled to get anything out while memories flooded her mind. She could hear her father yelling, feel the weight of his boot against her ribs, see the look of disgust in her mother as she reached out to her for anything as simple as a hug. "Why..."

The memories kept coming, and Violet recalled the pain of a cigarette pressed to her face, her father's grip on her hair as she was dragged across the yard, the cold dirt floor of the garden shed, the tickle of spiders crawling over her arms and legs, the snake that luckily never bit her, and the roaring boom of thunder as the walls rattled around her when the storms hit... and they forgot about her... again.

No birthday parties, no sleep overs, no time out with friends, no prom, no dances, no sports teams, no mall, no after school hang outs, no holidays, no presents, no smiles, no laughs... No love.

Violet crawled into Vanyel's lap and curled her knees up, and moved as deep into his arms as nature would allow. Her entire body was trembling, though not a single tear fell. "Mom and Dad... never loved me, did they?"
