Weighting on a Woman [Tsubine/Yusei] Empty Weighting on a Woman [Tsubine/Yusei]

The closer districts were hit hard, and even with some trouble near his own District of 66 West, Tsubine couldn't help but hear the plight of these citizens that were caught up in the crossfire. He still hadn't heard any real information as to why this invasion occurred. Sure, there were rumors about people getting kidnapped, Captains dying, etc... but all of that seemed like a smokescreen for something bigger. There was something more going on. He just knew it.

But the time for thinking about whys wasn't now. Tsubine had just finished handing off some dry goods to one of the many refugees around here when he heard a loud crack followed by a scream. His two escorts, the same not-twins he had been using when Kohaku wasn't around, rushed after him as he took off towards the sound of trouble. He could hear people clamoring—their voices hopelessly intermingled except for a constant cry of help.

The scene was not pleasant. It looked like a wagon being used to transport someone's whole life from a house still smoldering had tipped over. It wasn't just any wagon, where whatever it carried would just spill out. It was something in between a carriage and a standard farmer's wagon—and many of the items inside were still trapped within.

Also trapped was an elderly woman. She was not inside the wagon, thankfully, but she was in a precarious position. The wagon was clearly on top of her somewhat—she wasn't able to squeeze out of the gap between the walls of the wagon and the street, but she wasn't being crushed. Yet. "Sazanami. Suzukawa. Split up and find a doctor. If you bring two, you bring two. I'll pay them for their time." Tsubine's authority went unquestioned by the two not-twins. Their bowl-cut forms nodded and split off.

Tsubine took in a deep breath and scanned the crowd for anyone that wasn't old, injured, or (perhaps with a bit of protective misogyny) a woman. He caught sight of one person. "Hey you, with the sunglasses." Tsubine pointed between a gap in the ground. "Yeah, you. Mind giving me a hand here? I can lift this, but I need someone to pull her out."

YUSEI KUROIWA | DAREDEVIL

While living on the outskirts, in an industrial area, nobody was spared. Yusei's small cot was being used to shelter atleast two civilians until there was time to rebuild people's lives. Captains disappearing, invasions into the Soul Society at large... These were larger moves on a chessboard between bigger players. Yusei was a pawn, luckily pushed around by the right people. He was little more than cannon fodder who could tank a cannonball.

Ending up further inland, then, was a personal choice. He knew where he was needed the most, all else could wait. Despite everything, he still had his shihakusho on fastened loosely, and a recent looking mid-taper. His stride was confident, head cocked back and wide steps. His zanpakuto laid at his hip, fastened by a length of green cord. His instinctive, near thoughtless move was cut off.

The crack of wood against the ground rang out, with an overturned wagon in sight. Yusei ran over, to the sight of what looked to be a fellow Shinigami sending his subordinates off. The wagon had an older woman pinned down, a pained look on her face. Yusei's eyes widened.

At Tsubine's call, Yusei looked over at him. The light of the sun glanced off his glasses, completely obscuring his eyes. He ran over, watching him lift the side of the wagon. He then knelt down, curling a stiff arm over the older woman's shoulder, and another under her stomach. He lifted with his back and legs, pulling her out from under the raised wagon. He rolled her over, so as to let them make eye contact. Yusei folded his sunglasses, clipping them to his robe.

"Can you walk? --I know medics are on the way, we're gonna sit tight until then, okay?"

Yusei brought his voice up half an octave, as if he were talking to a child, the elderly, or a cat. He meant nothing by it, just voicing a concern that his face wouldn't, maybe couldn't show.

The young guy was quick to react. Good. Tsubine nodded in thanks. He felt around the wagon's wall for a good handhold. Once he found it, he planted his feet. He likely could have just used his Zanpakutō for this. It might have even be faster. But he was close enough to the Seireitei to warrant not doing such a thing. Otherwise, it might attract the wrong kind of attention. Muscles it was. "On three. One. Two. Three."

With a heave, the wagon was hoisted upward. The young man acted quickly. Once both were completely clear, Tsubine set it back down on its side as gently as he could. He ignored the sound of glass breaking from somewhere inside there. Whoever owned this wagon would likely be mad, but he'd eat that if for no other reason than to make sure that the person that pulled her out wouldn't catch flak.

Tsubine dusted off his hands and turned to see the guy over her, clearly trying to comfort the woman. The woman shook her head in response to Yusei's comforting answer. She was still in the middle of catching her breath and her legs were still weak from shock. Tsubine took a few steps towards them. He placed a hand on Yusei's shoulder. "Thanks for your help there." He turned his attention to the woman who was still regaining her composure and breath by kneeling down on one knee. "You're not hurt, are you?" The woman shook her head.

"Well that's good. Here," Tsubine removed his jacket and lightly lifted the woman's head up so she could lay her head down on someone more comfortable than formerly-cobbled stones. Still knelt, he turned his own sunglassed gaze to Yusei. "So, kid, what's your name? Anyone who rushes to help like that deserves to have their name known in my book." He extended his half-gloved hand. "Tsubine Shirazumi."

His attempt at freeing the woman from under the wagon was successful. Yusei looked up, seeing Tsubine lifting the side of the wagon by himself. His eyes widened for a moment, before it came time to tend to the survivor.

His back straightened out, as Yusei let her down gently on the ground. He raised his sunglasses, letting them rest on his bangs and press them against the buzzed sides. He winced, but seemed relieved that she could hold on for now.

"Mm. Well. We can wait for paramedics together."

Tsubine looked down to him, prompting Yusei to adjust himself and enter a squat when Tsubine knelt to meet the two of them. His steely grey eyes looked completely dull and dead, but he had a slight grin, which narrowed his eyes a little. He blinked, and glanced down. It just dawned on him that he was wearing his shihakusho, and not his dye-splattered work clothes he walks around in normally. "S—"

Yusei caught himself. He spaced out for a second. How much time passed while he was in the infirmary? Probably not a good choice to just walk around in his old uniform with his zanpakuto at his hip. Yusei clasped his hand and shook it, but kept it brief and pulled away."Yusei Kuroiwa. Used to be Squad 8, and I worked at a textile mill here before that."

Tsubine expected either of his two subordinates to return soon. Hopefully both would. Instead of just waiting, it was time to get to know at least some of the people around here. The Shihakusho was already a giveaway the guy was a Shinigami. Tsubine didn't know the Divisions, besides the 4th being the Combat Division, there apparently being a "Death Division," and the 6th was Realm Enforcement. Though, that didn't really matter as much now that the Gotei United was gone. At the very least, someone in this 8th Division was a decent person, and that was what mattered most to him.

"A textile mill, huh?" Tsubine focused in on that. In some ways, there was a bit more of an admiration there rather than on the Squad 8 mention. There were a lot of people who were skilled in fighting. People who knew how to work complex machinery for processing materials into clothing, bedding, or other "textillic" goods were just as needed. "Well, I hope it didn't get blown away in all this. Unless you've got other plans now that the Gotei's gone. It's going to be a wild world for a bit, I tell you."

Tsubine wondered about some of the Shinigami he had encountered—the multitude whose attitude put him on edge. He was concerned about their actions more than anything else. "Some people are going to be trying to get power for selfish, evil goals. Thankfully for everyone, I'm not one of them." He scanned the crowd for any sign of the two not-twins. "So, Yusei Kuroiwa formerly of Squad 8, what is it that drew you to the Gotei and away from working at a mill?"

The squads were well defined, sure. Yusei on the other hand was just a glue guy; Squad 8's role is to provide reserves for other units. He was there to facilitate other people doing their thing, and buy time for them. He certainly had the scars around his chest and shoulders to show for it. He tugged at his collar comically, and had a sheepish grin on his face. Tsubine however made his eyes light up. Not him specifically, but he felt like a million authority figures he trusted.

If he had other plans. Tsubine could watch gears turn in his head for a minute there. He looked back at the town behind him, and looked back. Yusei shrugged his shoulders. He then glanced down at the zanpakuto fastened to his hip. "Hate to say it, but. The Gotei was my plan. I had my own agenda, and just enough leash to pursue it. I've been going back to the mill, I mix dyes. These are just the cleanest clothes I have."

Yusei glanced to the side and squinted. Those twins would be here eventually. In the meantime, he glanced at the ground and thought about it. He untied the length of black cord securing the zanpakuto to his robe, and laid it across his shoulders. He hoped to illustrate a point here."The town I lived in was attacked. I evacuated people and held out until Shinigami showed up, but I wound up in the infirmary. I wanna protect the Rukongai. If someone wants a fight, I'll fight, but I wanna leave everyone else out of it."

Weighting on a Woman [Tsubine/Yusei] Empty Re: Weighting on a Woman [Tsubine/Yusei]

Tsubine was meeting quite a few people with gumption in the wake of the Gotei United's dissolution. It made him question his previous thoughts on the group. Sure there were bad apples, and maybe they didn't do as much as they could or should have... Between this guy, Tento, and others, there was something to be said about the type of duty that was being instilled into them. These were good people, and he hated that they had to be associated with people that weren't. His cocksure smile widened some.

"You've got spirit, kid." Tsubine wanted to test some of that spirit himself. A kid who unfastens his Zanpakutō like that was someone not afraid to use it. He placed his hand on his own Zanpakutō—a blue-hilted katana with no tsuba. The second sword at his hip did not match like a traditional daishō pair, and it remained untouched. "If you want to help out the Rukongai, sure you can go back to that mill. You can do little jobs like this," he gestured with his chin to the overturned wagon, "that do mean something. But I'd like to offer you something else."

"I'm forming a group that takes the burden of the Rukongai off the shoulders of the people who want to serve the 'higher cause' of preserving the balance and whatnot. That way they can do their thing, and the people that actually care about the Rukongai can defend it. I've already been doing this in 66 West for many a year now, and we're probably just as prosperous as a single-digit district. Compared to others, we weren't hit as hard, and I'd like to think that my work had something to do with that. I just want to expand my work past just my own little corner, and I want people with spirit and care—like you."

Tsubine made some bold claims, but it was hard to deny the truth of them. Whether Yusei had heard of the prosperity of 66 West—Shōjin—was about a 50/50 shot. Some people cared about the further districts, some didn't. "You interested in hearing more?"

The exact tone and tenor of what he was saying struck a chord with Yusei right away. He couldn’t help but think about it. About healing home. “Home” takes on air quotes without ever meaning to when you leave. That left him torn, but ultimately driven to rebuild the Rukongai. He wasn’t a heavy hitter saving the world, he was just there to fend off minor threats. That being said, every now and then, he’d shut his eyes and see concrete a millimeter away from his face. He kept that weary smile on his face, and tried to bide his time to voice this.

All the while, he started to think. Tsubine could see the gears turning in his head when he paused, for about three seconds. He swallowed a lump in his throat, and fastened his zanpakuto to his hip again. The outline of the sheath made his asauchi’s exact length and taper clear; this was the sort of sword people fought with on horseback in the Edo Period. "I have one last thing I want to do before I sign up. I heard we still have guys down there." He pointed to the ground…? Did he think the land of the living was beneath them? "I wanna relieve someone of their post, if only for a week or so. Some of the stories from other patients drove me nuts when I was in the infirmary. I can find my way to and from, somehow."

It felt like a job interview. Like one of several he’d had, here for the mill or otherwise. Yusei’s eyes lit up, despite his weary grin. He looked sleep-deprived, but confident. Dangerously so. "My zanpakuto… is a shield. Wherever I go, they’ll be in good hands."

Shojin was a mystery to him. He kept mostly to his district and neighboring ones. Sequestered away from the worst of the danger out there, despite the home invasion and war front pushing him to serve. He bit his lip, then looked up at Tsubine again."…Hate to say it, but I’ve never heard of that. But I want to know more. I’ll be there when I come back."

Weighting on a Woman [Tsubine/Yusei] Empty Re: Weighting on a Woman [Tsubine/Yusei]

Tsubine couldn't help but to feel confident in this kid. Something about him showed promise. Perhaps it was the way he spoke of wanting to do good for his former comrades. Perhaps it was how his Zanpakutō was a shield—something not usually seen. Or perhaps it was just a general vibe the guy gave off. Either way, it was something Tsubine needed in his new group.. "I think we can cover for you not being here for a week or two. And even if we can't, I'm not in any position to stop someone from doing something like that. Nor would I want to."

Tsubine sighed, as he knew the next stumbling block to Yusei's goal. "I don't have much to offer in assistance for that though. I don't have the means to get you to the World of the Living. There are rumors of both a Vizard in the Seireitei that's doing it and an Arrancar that's charging an arm and a leg that's in an area I don't have good eyes on. The fact that I've heard of success stories from the latter says to me that they're not part of the invasion. Don't know which route you want to take, but that's all I know—unless you wait for the Senkaimon to get rebuilt by one of the nobles vying for control. But I think that might be the worst option of the three."

"Good, they're back." Tsubine's senses beyond his sight ruined the surprise. The two not-twins rounded the same corner. Although they had initially split up, it seemed like they had reunited and were practically dragging a middle-aged man behind them. The man stumbled to a stop as Sazanami and Suzukawa both glided to one. "We were told this man was the closest doctor that wasn't a quack, sir."

"Sorry about their rough treatment. I was worried about this woman over here; she was trapped under that wagon. And Yusei here really sprang into action in making sure she got out." Tsubine clapped Yusei on the back.

The doctor, hunched over and catching his breath, looked over to the woman Tsubine indicated. His eyes went wide. "Mother?!" He ran over with renewed vigor. He knelt down and examined her. She was tired and likely had a bruised rib, but overall she would be fine. "I told you not to load any of Kyoma-san's things yourself. I was going to do it when I got back—"

She interrupted him, sitting up. He tried to gently push her back, but she batted his hand away. "Oh don't give me that. Everyone's got to do their part right now. I wasn't going to just sit around and gawk while everyone around me worked. I'm just lucky these two young men were able to get me out before it really hurt me."

Defeated at a stubborn mother's insistence, the doctor turned to both Yusei and Tsubine. "Thank you both. If I had lost her too..." The doctor shook his head. "Is there anything I can do to repay you?" Tsubine glanced to Yusei, and so the doctor's attention focused on the younger of the two. It was another little test. What kind of repayment would Yusei want from this, if any?

Upon hearing this, Yusei smiled. Either way, he was already thinking about... a distinct lack of preparations. He wanted to run down there, take up a post, and run back. Tsubine could see his eyes light up for a moment. "I know we have our own trouble here. As soon as I'm done filling in for someone down there, I'm going right back home."

He'd scarcely seen either. Or if he did, they were hard to pick out of a lineup. In either case, the word "invasion" jogged his memory. He had a vague idea in his head about either, and he could see the gears failing to turn in Yusei's head. Something "hollow" related. "I'll take my chances with the Arrancar. I might be too late if I wait on one of the nobles to fix it." All the while, the twins started charging back with a man in tow. He'd been squatting there and waiting for a moment, and finally stood up to face them. "We lost you for a minute there. Is this our guy?"

The hand clapped on his back startled him, and Yusei looked to the doctor. He didn't want to take too much credit for this, but wouldn't give any pushback at the praise he was given. He sheepishly tugged at his collar. "It's nothin'. It would've bothered me if I did nothin'. And I'm sure Captain Tsubine felt the same way."

Yusei looked back to the older woman they'd called the doctor for to begin with. She seemed as full of life as ever, prompting a sigh of relief. However, he was prompted to talk again. The doctor asked the two men a question, and it was pushed on him. He couldn't even think about something like this right now. Yusei was a little too casual at the moment, offering a slight shrug. His demeanor returned to what it was before the adrenaline kicked in; he looked tired. "…Not really. You're a doctor, right? You probably have your hands full already."
