Crossroads (Kanako, Sabriel)

SABRIEL VENTRESS
A brief trip to buy books had been just the ticket for the rather tender Arrancar and Sabriel had managed to psych herself up enough to travel on her own to do so. She had ended up in Greece of all places but she had no real qualms, as despite the potential risk of her being discovered, the chance to simply travel somewhere different had eventually won the day. Most of her days just recently had been spent in the lovely abode that belonged to Arianda, a woman who she had come to be so close to and had been crucial in helping Sabriel overcome her period of doubt. The worst days were behind her thankfully but she had not come out completely unscathed. She just did not quite feel the same.
Taking a rest outside one of the many restaurants that littered the beautiful town, the Arrancar would be flicking through the pages of the first book that she had bought that day. An avid reader to put it mildly, her eyes would almost zoom across the page as she devoured the information. It had been so long since she had been able to lose herself in a good book, so long since the endless worries had faded away to give her peace. In truth, it had not been all that drawn out over a period of time but when one was lost in their own misery, even a day could last a lifetime. Sabriel was simply thankful that was not how she felt now.

Today was certainly an odd day… odd because Kanako was out in a town alone, and wasn’t being bothered by others. Given what she was, and how big she was, the only place she expected to not receive weird treatment was back at home. As it was, Kanako was being a perfect citizen… sure, she’s an eight foot tall citizen, but still!
As of late, Kanako had been consuming books at a rather obscene rate. She’s trying to help herself better understand her own emotions. Suffice to say, there is a person in her life that she has deep feelings for and wishes to identify and understand them better. This lead to Kanako standing in front of a book store that also had a curious energy in front of it; that of a fellow Arrancar who appeared to be reading books with gusto.
Kanako walked up to her, noticing she seemed quite absorbed. However, Kanako gently tapped the woman upon the shoulder to try and gain her attention.
“Excuse me… Do you know any good books I could read? I’ve run out of interesting titles…”

Normally, Sabriel would have simply flicked her gaze towards the woman and tried to figure her out but so out of sorts was she that the Arrancar jumped a touch instead. It was thoroughly embarrassing and the dark haired woman mentally sighed with frustration at her own tender form. Yet, she could never truly be safe in the human world at that point, not with the invasion still in fairly recent memory. One day, she might just have to pay the piper on that, as humans liked to say. Still, as she relaxed and looked over the woman, she soon realised that today was likely not going to be that day.
The golden eyed woman definitely appeared to be a fellow Arrancar and an awfully tall one at that. She must have been in the eight feet range and certainly towered over Sabriel. Yet, the shorter woman did not feel much in the way of ill intent in the taller and so she saw no reason to do anything other than be civil, remembering her usually oh so keen manners. In a different time, she might have replied with a far more sultry response but as it was, her tone was merely cordial although she did offer a smile.
“If I can help you, I will. What topic are you interested in?”

What kind of book was she looking for…? Kanako wasn’t too sure… Instead of thinking on what she should be looking for as far as a ‘genre’, she was contemplating the smaller Arrancar woman before her. She had the air of a fancy woman, the smell of one too; but lingered upon her was a scent Kanako had never smelled before. Heavy, sweet, and one that Kanako could only identify as ‘weird’. However, the Arrancar woman discarded it after she smelled the woman’s perfume. Clearly, this woman was around someone who smelled a bit different, but Sabriel herself seemed to exude a fine enough scent.
She ceased focusing on things like scents, as much as she could at least, and instead focused on Sabriel’s question. What would help her…? Romance? Perhaps it was better to turn to Fantasy? Khaana didn’t like it when she read certain types of books, after all… Maybe instead it was better to find something Kanako herself could enjoy.
“Fantasy, perhaps? Romance might not hurt… I don’t know many titles, so I often end up reading the same series over and over.”

Intrigued by the answer given, Sabriel would briefly muse to herself as she pondered about the genres that the woman asked about. Fantasy and romance more often than not were entwined in the dark haired woman’s opinion and many of her personal favourites contained a fair amount of both. Not all of them were particularly suited for everyone, given the purple eyed Arrancar’s rather adult tastes but she had read a fair few more mainstream ones too and her collection was fairly large by now. Her library back home was constantly growing and she treasured it more than almost anything. With manuscripts and novels from across the centuries and beyond.
Sabriel had to admit that she had not expected such an answer from the golden eyed woman, instead having thought that maybe she was more of an action orientated genre kind of reader. It appeared not and the smaller Arrancar was certainly unashamed of admitting to herself when she was wrong. Still, the woman before her was certainly striking and Sabriel was most certainly thankful that she was not on her bad side.
“Hmm. Well, there are plenty of series out there if you wish for a bit of both.” Sabriel replied, trying to whittle down what could end up being a rather long list. “Is there an author in particular that you like? That could help a little more.”
After a moment, she would add with a smile. “I am Sabriel, by the way, Sabriel Ventress.”

Kanako pondered somewhat over Sabriel’s question, taking a seat next to the woman; at least if she could. It would spare Sabriel’s neck the stress of looking up at the eight foot tall woman at least. An Author she liked? She thought of one that had a rather long storyline about elves, dwarves, humans, dragon riders, and a foreign land named something quite odd. Kanako didn’t really remember his name unfortunately, but that was alright. She had read those books a bit too often by this point.
“I don’t know, I’m sorry… Like I said, I had been sticking with the same books for a while; they all happen to be from the same author, actually. I’ll take just about anything you can suggest, even if it’s not exactly… safe for the day.”
Kanako rubbed the back of her head, looking a bit sheepish as she confessed such a thing. She didn’t mind the lewd stuff, frankly she found it quite intriguing how much humans had a penchant for debauchery. However, she didn’t want to focus on the subject overall. Frankly speaking, reading, even if it wasn’t helpful in understanding emotions better, did help the woman with her vocabulary; something that was well appreciated.
“It’s nice to meet you, Sabriel. I’m Kanako, Kanako Hashimoto. It’s nice to meet a fellow Arrancar~” A small smile adorned the overlarge woman’s features, warm despite her potentially intimidating features.

It truly did seem that beneath the golden eyed woman’s rather intimidating appearance, there was a far more humble soul. Sabriel felt rather comfortable around Kanako and if there had been any initial hesitation on her part then it had most certainly faded away by now. Her relationship with her fellow Arrancar was such an unusual one, as it seemed that the lavender eyed woman lacked the aggressiveness that many of her kind possessed. Lover rather than a fighter was how humans described her and she supposed it was true. Yes, she had been an aggressor during that blasted invasion but looking back on it now, Sabriel could not help but think that the woman on that battlefield had been someone else.
Now that the polite introductions had taken place, Sabriel would try and figure out how to help Kanako with her search for a book. It sounded as if the tall Arrancar was at somewhat of a loss when it came to exactly what she wanted, which made it rather difficult for the lavender eyed woman to make a suggestion. Still, she would try her best and after thinking about it for a moment, would rummage around inside her bag and withdraw a red covered paperback.
“I am not sure if this will suffice but I have read many of her other novels and she certainly knows how to mix fantasy with romance.” Sabriel would reply, handing the book over to Kanako without any hesitation at all. On the front would be an image of a female, red haired mage, creating fire with her bare hands. “She is fond of making rather strong minded heroines and more often than not, they tend to prefer their own gender rather than the other.”

Kanako watched Sabriel as she considered the woman, uncertain of what to think about the overlarge Arrancar, perhaps. Well, whatever her decision came to, it appeared to be positive. After a small amount of time, in which Sabriel had looked into Kanako's eyes and seemed to derive some manner of comfort from Kanako's 'gentle giant' attitude, the woman began to rummage around in her bag. Kanako tilted her head, her pupils dilating slightly as she took the woman in; attractive, to be certain... But still lingered that smell. Luckily for Kanako, she wasn't terribly interested in messing around. She came here for books.
With gentle hands Kanako took the book from Sabriel and took a seat next to the woman. Even while sitting, Kanako still loomed a bit over Sabriel... But hopefully it wasn't quite as intimidating. Kanako looked at the book, gently flipping through the pages as she considered the words upon them. Kanako also looked upon the summary on the back of the book, something intended to catch your attention and stoke your desire to read. Kanako soon looked back at the cover of the book, upon the red-head conjuring fire with her hands alone. The Arrancar stared at the cover for a few moments until she heard Sabriel's final statement; strong minded heroines that tend to prefer their own gender than the other. Perhaps that could be helpful?
"Thank you, Sabriel... I think this will more than suffice. Do you have any other suggestions?" Kanako extended the book back towards Sabriel, intent on returning it. "Maybe we can go inside? It should be fine as long as I'm with you. I just need to be a bit careful. Ya know, eight feet tall with a tail and all..."
Kanako wanted to go shopping with the woman, that much was clear. She wanted to first, find the book Sabriel had suggested, and then they could peruse so Kanako could find a few more books; perhaps more of Sabriel's suggestions or others that caught the oversized woman's interest. Kanako was proving herself as quite the gentle giant, perhaps a surprise to Sabriel given how most Arrancar acted. Her desire for romance and fantasy certainly spoke of something; albeit Sabriel could probably sense, if she wanted to, Kanako's own desires... innocent desires for someone the Arrancar loves... And the less so innocent. However, the large Arrancar didn't seem to desire to give away personal information without some time; just like how Kanako didn't wish to pry into Sabriel's life. Kanako knew, however, one of her own was just the right person to ask about books; especially one so laden with them.

Gently taking the book back and placing it back in her bag, Sabriel would smile and reply to her new found friend. “Oh, I am sure that I could suggest a great many novels that might capture your interest but perhaps it might be easier if we look around as you asked instead. I only gave a brief once over to this shop in question, as eager as I was to start reading as soon as I caught sight of the book I handed to you. Once I find a novel that I dearly want to read, that is all I focus on until I am done.”
Chuckling, she would stand up, take her bag and then cheerfully lead the way into the shop. Sabriel could understand why Kanako might feel uncomfortable in such places and so the lavender eyed woman would do her utmost to make sure that nothing amiss happened. She had honestly never met an Arrancar quite like the gentle giant beside her and while perhaps in her earlier days, Sabriel might have tried to make a pass or at least some witty banter with Kanako, she just did not seem to find that form of play as appealing anymore. It was a strange feeling and the Arrancar of Lust mused to herself briefly but deep down, she reckoned that she knew why. Much had changed over recent months and the most important one had been Arianda’s entrance into her life. She was not one hundred percent sure, being somewhat alien to her new found feelings still but Sabriel was an intelligent being and could put two and two together.
“I am sure that I found it somewhere around here…” She mused aloud, her gaze briefly turning as she searched for the familiar novel, before asking Kanako. “It is not often that I find another Arrancar who enjoys a good book. How did you come to take an interest in them if I might ask?”

“I understand, it can be very hard to put a good book down.”
Kanako gave Sabriel a gentle smile before the oversized woman followed Sabriel into the bookstore. Due to Kanako’s eight foot tall frame, she had to hunch quite a bit to get into the store. Afterwards, after the woman carefully withdrew her tail within herself (thank goodness she could do that ) so that she wouldn’t bash any shelves with it; tight as it was in here, she wanted to take no risks. Kanako followed Sabriel closely, a little slouched over at times due to the building’s lack of compliance with eight foot tall beings. However, the reptilian woman enjoyed her time with Sabriel. It was a novelty to find another Arrancar that liked reading, and appeared to be a voracious reader to boot.
With time, with that strange scent upon Sabriel slowly fading into the back of Kanako’s mind, they eventually came to where Sabriel believed to have found the book she had shown Kanako earlier. She scanned the shelves, more worried about the book than the obviously attractive woman next to her. Oh certainly, in another time, it seems both Kanako and Sabriel would have enjoyed a night together; but now? Even if Sabriel had shown interest, when it was obvious she hadn’t, Kanako would have refused. It appeared that both beings had someone in their life already. Then came a question, a question that broke Kanako’s concentration as she absentmindedly reached out for a book, just happening to pull out a hard-cover copy of the book they were looking for; albeit she had yet to realize it.
“I certainly feel the same… I think you’re the only Arrancar I’ve met who does like reading books; then again, I haven’t actively searched for it.” Kanako eventually considered the book within her hands, realizing it was the one they sought. She sat down upon the floor, seemingly slightly off balance without her tail, so that Sabriel could look at Kanako without straining her neck. “Well… Someone important to me convinced me to start reading. It didn’t take much on her part, really. What she turned me upon to try and make me more sociable worked quite well; albeit sometimes she complains about me reading too many of the wrong books… She should be fine with something like this, however.”
Kanako smiled gently as she looked down at the book in her hands, carefully running a soft finger across the picture of the fiery woman upon the cover.
“What about you, Sabriel? How did you come upon this interest to read?”
