Rukongai Adventure [OPEN]
Mon Apr 29, 2019 3:20 pm
It had been over eight years since Mirajane last stepped foot in the Rukongai, a land beset by poverty and criminal activity. Though she currently had no feelings, positive or negative, about the place, as a young child Mira had been soured against it entirely by stories of what happened to her mother. Such things were now trivial to the newly anointed First Division member who, after a grueling eight years in the Shino Academy, was now a full fledged member of the Gotei United. This fact, too, was unimportant to Mirajane. Little genuinely mattered to her, and as such being in the Rukongai didn't affect her in the least bit.
The reason she was here in the Rukongai today was in response to the recently expelled incursion of demons, one of World War 4's initial conflicts. Though there had been another battle elsewhere in Soul Society, the majority of attackers here had merely been low level mooks and as such was a more fitting area for someone like her to investigate. As part of the cleanup process following the first wave of attacks Shinigami were being sent out to the locations of such battles as assurances of safety and reinforcement for victims and those most vulnerable to Soul Society's enemies. To Mirajane it just seemed like PR, but it didn't matter either way. As long as she did her duty and got through the day things would be fine, she was sure. After all, "join and serve the Gotei" was her father's final command.

Takehiko Kuchiki
Stepping out of the academy had never been tricky really. Leaving the manor now that was hard for a Kuchiki. During war times especially it was difficult but he had to do something. Sitting and pretending to be a porcelain person didn't work for him. He wasn't good at anything really but he could help people out. Takehiko had arrived after the Gotei member had. But he'd begun working on clearing the way of debris not really strong. He had to rely on smarts over that muscle in his arms. Takehiko could use his mask but only for a second which was wasteful. Wiping the sweat from his brow he moved a piece of lumber giving a girl her bear. Takehiko didn't really have a good answer for coming here. He was still considered a Shino academy student and hadn't even gotten his sword's name down. Though something told him that was for the best given the feeling he got. Tapping his digits on the girl's head he sent her off. His azure eyes slowly shifted left to right before arriving at the figure of Mirajane.
He'd heard of her from the academy at the very least. He didn't call out to her as that seemed improper to him. Calling out wasn't the way a Kuchiki should do things. He walked over calmly sighing and taking in air. She was a member of Squad One presently. Worlds apart from Shino Academy and it's students. Though he didn't join any defensive he'd decided to make a ploy. Going for the chance to adventure and see the world. Taking his time to help several refugees among other things. This wasn't so much a rebellion on his part as just what he could do. Takehiko never stood out as anything special really in classes. Unremarkable would be his slogan he guessed as a student. He did have bravery and courage for whatever those were worth. Takehiko would rush to help someone even if had no concrete ideas. This was just his personality in general when he walked over stopping at Mirajane. First meetings were so stressful with members of the organization. He didn't really know the proper title or addressing for this stuff.
So wait and be noticed was his only tactic at hand.

Mirajane had never excelled in the Shino Academy during her stay there, to say the least. She had failing grades in every course besides Zanjutsu and took a whopping eight years to graduate, at which point she was only allowed to leave due to the Gotei's need for new soldiers after all the battles and wars over the last decade. However, her reputation in the Academy was still a fierce one; Having been the most skilled sword fighter in the entire Academy among all students for eight years running is a legacy of extremes, both good and bad, left behind in her wake. Little else was known of the young Shinigami as she kept to herself and didn't seek to make a single friend during her tenure at the school.
Now in the Gotei, things were not much different. Mirajane still failed in almost all aspects of Shinigami combat, with Zanjutsu being the one exception, and didn't have any relationships of note. Which also explained why instead of sticking with the group of Shinigami sent to the Rukongai on today's mission, she remained isolated and alone. That is, until a stranger not sporting any indication of belonging to the Gotei showed up. The man just sort of...stood there. Awkwardly. Though, he did at least seem to be a Shinigami from what Mira could tell. Turning on her classic Mirajane charm, she turned to the man and asked coldly "What are you doing all the way out here?"

Takehiko had heard about her troubles, though he'd been a failing student for a while. Failures had to admire one another in a sense. He wasn't good at anything of note when it came to his skills. He didn't have any traits which stood out strongly. Despite having a rather impressive lineage he simply fell short. "Helping those I can." Takehiko didn't really where an emblem that said Shino Academy on it. Though he thought about it for a moment blinking deciding to offer his name. Social interaction still wasn't his strong suit. "I'm Takehiko Kuchiki, you are Mirajane Soan right? " Doubtful she'd know how he knew the information or of him. Coming out here to help people was strange for a Kuchiki too. Sitting still didn't give him much hope of anything realistically. He didn't need anything to help people that was just a desire. In his heart, he realized the Gotei had their hands full as it was. So every able body person should have come to help.
But life often times gives lemons so one makes with what they have. "Is there any other things you need to do I can help with?" An earnest desire burned in his eyes and soul. Help those here as much as he could here. Helping people was second nature for him at the very least. Talentless and loser were a name he knew well. So being able to help people was a boon and blessing in a way. Takehiko had the intention to fight the next time it came. Though not for glory or such things. But to protect these people and allow for peace.

Being a newly anointed foot soldier in the Gotei made this Takehiko's ability to identify her a bit strange. Her first thought was unless he was some kind of walking encyclopedia of Gotei recruits, they must have attented the Shino Academy together. After all, she had graduated less than a year prior so unless he was brand new to the school then perhaps they had been in a class together. Still, she didn't recognize him in the slightest. Not that she could name a single person she graduated with anyway. Acknowledging his introduction, Mira responded in kind "Yes I am Mirajane Soan, soldier of the Gotei. I am currently on official Gotei business."
Turning away from the other Shinigami, Mira ran her gaze across the torn apart buildings around them in an attempt to analyze the consequences of Shadow Fall's attack here. Evidently this particular section of the Rukongai had suffered to an extreme degree, and clearly didn't have the resources to rebuilt. Crumbling infrastructure was the first indication of this, while dead bodies still littered about here and there reinforced it by quite a bit to Mira. While she may not emotionally be able to sympathize with their situation, her understanding of the Gotei's objectives and purpose meant forcing herself to appear sympathetic was probably the right call. However all this succeeded in doing was make her almost seem patronizing, so Mirajane decided to just keep being herself for now.
In response to Takehiko's offer Mira responded as coldly as before, though unintentionally so "You can help by not getting in my way or interfering with my mission." After doing so she set off southward without any indication for the Kuchiki to follow, though given her personality not specifically shooing him away could easily be taken as an invitation to join. There were still some things Mira was curious about in the area, and this mission would be a good chance to explore such suspicions.

Takehiko Kuchiki
If she didn't know him which was fine since he was bottom tier as it was. Takehiko shrugged his shoulders expecting little else. So it was as he guessed she was here doing something for the Gotei. Her air around her was difficult to read as cold it was. There was more to it that he couldn't understand. The strange part was she didn't send him away but told him not to get in the way. Takehiko didn't plan to ask her a large sum of questions. At present, he and she both didn't hold a tremendous amount of power. They were pretty low on the totem pole at least he was. Takehiko could only glimmer small things about her. But he guessed from the graduation class she wasn't the highest. Takehiko's steps followed her staying behind and out of her way. He was alert however and ready to exercise what skills he did have. "Fair enough." Was all he offered Mirajane Soan, not saying anything more. He sensed she wasn't one for talking so it didn't seem right. To continue trying to press conversation with her awkwardly.
Gotei business could have meant a large number of things. Did they expect a lingering presence from demons? Takehiko wasn't sure exactly what could be accomplished at present. But waiting till a signal or something was given could be problematic. Takehiko didn't know the nature of this mission but decided to follow Mirajane. The reasoning behind it was less so about being annoying. He was merely curious as a child observing. Though he could leap in and help at a moments notice. Takehiko's skills were worse then Mirajane's he guessed. He didn't have much of a skill set anywhere large. This was due to some issues that haunted his progress. But his azure eyes shifted left to right, looking over the people around them. A sad smile dawned on his expression as he couldn't help but feel pity for them. They had endured a rather tragic outcome of the world. They'd been pushed and shoved into this corner. The question was what did the Gotei intend to do from here.

Considering all that had happened here, Mirajane found it a bit suspect all of the vile invaders had simply retreated the instant the tide turned against them. While it was true the majority were either slaughtered or injured significantly enough to warrant retreat, the total lack of lingering presence, especially in an area without regular guard or protection from the Gotei, seemed too good to be true. Such a possibility put her in a bit of an awkward, difficult position though: Bringing along a Shino Academy student into what could possibly be a lion's den seemed irresponsible, but knowing her own capabilities any assistance from others would be welcome. All she could do was hope the number of potential enemies would be reasonably low.
As the party of two continued onward through the dirt streets of Rukongai a growing sense of malice pervaded the atmosphere, swirling and surrounding the Shinigami like a blanket of degradation. Whether this was simply residual from the war or an indicator of something else was still as-of-yet unclear to the budding Gotei soldier. That is, until they came upon a particularly thick cloud of dread radiating from one building in particular, a crumbling structure clearly meant to house at least a dozen or more Plus's; basically a mansion compared to it's hut neighbors. It stood out like a sore thumb, which made it an odd hideout for Demons who chose to stay over retreating; yet at the same time, Mirajane doubted she was exactly dealing with the Einsteins of Shadow Fall.
Choosing to approach the building through stealth, Mira crouched and indicated for Takehiko to do the same. Afterwards she circled around it's neighboring house and the two made their way to the structure's rear where Mira would have the opportunity to come up with a battle plan. Once the duo was situated comfortably by a back window, which as expected of the Rukongai was just basically a hole in the wall, Mira peaked in and had her suspicions confirmed: Inside the house were three Shadow Fall soldiers, all of whom seemed to have sustained at least surface injuries during the previous battle. Being far enough away from them to openly whisper to Takehiko without worry of being detected, Mirajane did just that "Three demons, as far as I can tell. They don't seem all that special but they are Shadow Fall soldiers nonetheless. You can either fall back or assist me here, up to you."

Takehiko Kuchiki
It was a strange thing as far in as they had gotten, he'd been concerned about similar things. Had any demons remained in this place they called home? Takehiko followed Mirajane giving her a respectful distance. But also keeping senses alert till he finally detected that malice. So some had remained indeed, troubling indeed. They didn't need back up he imagined if they used their advantages. Takehiko's eyes examined the house noticing the exits and entrances. They had one blocked at the moment so this gave them a chance. Something to obscure vision would be helpful he imagined. Or a distraction so she could go in for the kill. He ran his hand along the home's foundation taking it in as well. Sturdy and built to last in this situation making it difficult. Dropping the house would have been extreme solutions as well. Takehiko didn't have the advantage in strength or speed really. He was good at Hoho, had been practicing kido. So evaluating his choices he kept his voice low and quiet. Noticing two escapes beside the windows.
Though from what he could tell from the malice running was unlikely till one or two fell. That was when they'd try running he suspected. But he needed to leave room for all possibilities in this regard. Takehiko's azure eyes looked over the area. " I'm going to the front entrance to get their attention when you see an opening hit them. I'll use kido to try and get their attention at the very least." Takehiko said softly in a whisper before waiting for her to acknowledge it. She was a skilled sword wielder and could easily dispatch them given a chance. So his job at this moment as a tag along was to give her a chance. Sneaking around once she was alright with the plan he moved. Inhaling he didn't say anything as incantations would cause trouble. But he needed something potent to hold the three of them. At least long enough to get their attention in this regard. Extending his right hand a crawling crackling rope shot from the front entrance towards the three.
Quickly he drew a symbol in the air as a red glow began flowing from his body. Hainawa and Geki both used. He hoped he could hold them long enough for her to strike them. They didn't know about the other Shinigami yet, he needed to introduce himself. It all was going to have to be good in terms of performance here. "I thought I sensed a foul presence here, in the name of the Gotei and the Kuchiki family I demand you surrender." He said it was as much conviction as possible. Holding his kido and a trump card in the wings. They weren't the strongest thankfully or smartest he hoped. They could take advantage of this in some facet or regard. Takehiko's azure eyes watched to see what happened next. He still had one hand free for another kido if need be. He was using kido because at close range he would only get in her way. Mirajane was far superior to him in sword skills. Well, it was a guess he hoped proved correct in this regard. Distraction from one direction and a hit from another direction. Windows were a problem but he had a plan for that as well.

In lieu of vocally confirming the plan, Mirajane responded by simply nodding in Takehiko's direction. She knew there was no guarantee any step of this plan would proceed without hiccups, but doing something was certainly better than doing nothing. Thus she allowed the Shino Academy student to leave and go provide a distraction for her to get in and do the dirty work. Once he turned the corner she raised her head slightly and began observing the demons and their current positions. They were spread out across the main room with the two healthiest standing while the most injured of the bunch was on the floor, leaning against the left hand side wall. All three were pretty worse for wear however, and their general morale seemed quite abysmal. Perhaps they would welcome death.
As Mirajane kept watching, her gaze was drawn to all the various openings and hiding spots they could use to escape. Only a couple windows...can't discount possibility of reinforcements from above or below. she thought to herself, considering various potentialities. Being prepared for everything meant being surprised by nothing, a lesson hammered into her consciousness throughout her stay in Soul Society's most brutal wilderness. Mira's thoughts were interrupted by the sudden appearance of an energy chain orange in hue which quickly wrapped itself around the demon standing in the room's center; it would have gotten all three had the other two not immediately dodged out of the way. Though not incredibly powerful these warriors certainly had decent reflexes, a fact which didn't surprise Mirajane given their chosen career field as Shadow Fall soldiers.
Without hesitation the purple haired Shinigami leaped through the window and immediately crossed the distance between herself and the demon to her right, currently recovering from diving to the ground to avoid Takehiko's chain spell. Before the enemy soldier could prepare for battle Mirajane's copper blade found itself impaled in his chest, causing him to cough up blood. Quickly after she withdrew the sword and sliced cleanly through his neck, beheading the demon where he lay. By swiftly cutting one down, Mira made it easier for Takehiko to hold the other two down with Kido which is exactly what happened. The middle demon remained in chains while the injured one was now glowing red, trapped by the Shinigami's Geki spell. From the straining lips of the demon still suffering from wounds of war a few choice words were uttered "We...surrender...!" To the demon, even life in the Maggot's Nest was better than immediate death.
"I accept your surrender." Upon saying this, Mirajane turned to face the two remaining enemy combatants and her unfeeling gaze remained trained upon them. Without waiting for Takehiko to act again, Mira walked forward and raised her Zanpakuto before beheading the chained up demon; immediately after she walked over to the final enemy and did the same to him, leaving three headless corpses in the otherwise-untarnished building. With her objective complete Mirajane turned to leave and headed to the front entrance where Takehiko still was and voiced her appreciation for his Kido "Thank you for the assistance. You performed above expectations. All that's left is to--" Before Mira had a chance to finish her statement suddenly the floorboards of the house shattered with such force she was pushed against Takehiko before both of them would be sent flying across the street, as if an explosion had erupted underground.
Mirajane found herself disoriented as her ears rang and eyesight was now blurry, but this lasted for only a few seconds before she recovered and realized, rather awkwardly, she was currently laying atop the Shino Academy student's body. Rolling off, Mira brought herself to her knees and turned to look at what happened and a look of astonishment spread across her face. While she had been prepared for reinforcements, a fifteen foot tall hulking behemoth of a demon standing where the house had been was not considered a possibility. Evidently the strongest of the pack had been hiding in some kind of basement and their actions had drawn it's attention and ire. The beast had stone-like skin, four arms, and an enraged look about it indicating a berserk-like state. "I hope you can still use Kido, Takehiko Kuchiki."

Takehiko Kuchiki
The blast had not been part of his plan from the start. Though he should have considered the basement in the tactical plans. Returning to his senses he realized Mira was on top of him. While it was different for both of them he imagined. He got to his feet examining the figure in terms of height. He was a big one so chains were an option again for fighting. But tactical speaking chaining him down wouldn't solve the problem. It would take too many chains in order to immobilize him. So that brought up one kido in mind. He wouldn't be able to just cast it normally without chant. This required a bit more demon magical power to it. Thankfully he was familiar with the incantation of it very vividly. When she asked him if he had anymore kido left in him. He merely nodded and began to recite the incantation and draw the simple. This was going to have to work, a bunch of smaller kido wouldn't work. He would need to first take away movement to give her a chance of attack. " Disintegrate, you black dog of Rondanini!! Look upon yourself with horror and then claw out your own throat! Bakudo 9 Geki"
Finishing the incarnation quickly for a more potent version of the previous kido. His entire body began to permeate a brilliant red glow. Soon it would engulf the large being regardless of size. Now if she could attack him while he was held still it would be helpful. Takehiko didn't have a plan b in mind for this. The first kido was successful now he needed something else. Could he do anything to hinder it's movement further? Holding it still with the glow of Geki was difficult enough. Perhaps something else could be done as he felt sweat trickle down his body. He would simply have to trust Mira to make the most of the chance. This kido was the strongest binding one he had. Takehiko was focusing on kido so as to not invade her space of combat. Sometimes it was just best to know supporting cast from the main cast. Takehiko looked around scanning the area for something.
Anything that he could do to make his job easier as he wasn't sure he could hold him forever. One more kido needed to be cast just in case. But for right now he was stuck with this to buy her time. Mira would have to make the most of the full body paralysis spell. Takehiko would need to think about his next move very carefully. He wasn't exactly a kido master and only had a few in his tool belt to use. At this point, he was really wishing he could another kido that was stronger. He just didn't have much else to use at this point aside from a flash step. One last tactic which wasn't terribly bright. Would be to use his speed and point blank a Byakurai to the head. But the creature's body seemed pretty solid. So maybe it was better he does not do that yet. All tactics ready in his mind he prepares for possibilities from her getting wounded to him losing his Geki. Hopefully, it couldn't brute force it's way out of a kido. But this was unknown territory for him in this regard. Concentration and deciding to try something else.
From surrender to fighting a large demon with bulging muscles. His day did not seem to get any better. Well on the brighter side of things he was getting some exercise. What he would give to use Sokatsui at this point and destroy this being. It was a Kuchiki Clan specialty that he was nowhere near using. But couldn't do anything about that here and now. He'd need to merely make use of the tools in his kit. To make the most of his prowess and growing skills at the field of kido. Takehiko knew his role well enough in this regard. Fight from the back using kido to allow Mira to muscle her way through with swordplay. But he also was a good hand or foot rather at Hoho. So the question of the next move was now laid bare for Mira to take.
