A heroes purpose [Shio,Steiner] - Page 2 Empty Re: A heroes purpose [Shio,Steiner]

Artist: Yuki Hayashi - Song: You Can Become a Hero - Word Count: 1,040

He was in the middle of clearing a rather small pizza joint nestled in between what looked like a clothing store and hobby shop when he heard the sounds of conflict coming from further down the street. In the distance the hero of honor could see the Shinigami and Quincy going in on the Hollow with reckless abandonment. Internally Steiner thanked whatever divine being was up above that he had cleared that area moments before they had started going in on this particular Hollow, but something inside of him did not feel right. Looking at a nearby window and catching a glimpse of himself, he realized how sad he looked at the state of affairs that was going on at that very moment. In a way, he felt like he had been relegated to a task, that though heroic in nature, was rather ill fitting for a man who had spent every waking moment of his life training to stop big monsters like the one stomping through the area. He remembered that feeling of having powers, of making a difference, and of fighting the horrors that the world had to offer.

But those were just memories, fleeting at best, and Steiner who had been relegated to search and rescue knew for a fact that it would be pointless for him to run back into the maws of hell to do battle with such a being. Yet he continued to look at himself in the window and with each and every second he looked, allowing resignation to this role seep in, the more and more miserable he looked. Steiner's grasp on the sword he had bought turned his knuckles white as the last of the customers from within the pizza shop made their way down the street to escape the conflict. For a moment he would look away at the fleeing civilians as they beckoned to him to follow them as they made their way to safety. For a second Steiner was about to follow them and why shouldn't he? This was a world where power trumped effort no matter how hard one tried to escape it. That was the reality of the situation and if someone like him went back into the conflict behind him, he would surely be hurt or worse killed. For another fleeting moment, Steiner stood shaking as he struggled internally with all of his hard-wiring and after that moment was over, Steiner knew what he had to do.

"Keep going that way...you will be safe if you just keep going!", he shouted as he loosened the grip on his sword and looked back at the conflict that was brewing behind him. The people didn't wait for him as they began to rush to the location that Steiner had told them would be safe while he continued to stare back at the three super powers battling each other for dominance in that area. "What are you doing Stein...you know what is going to happen if you go back and fight this fight. You know you have no place in this war...you are only human after all!", Steiner shouted at himself as he walked over to a nearby wall and slammed his head into it softly. For a few seconds he stood there, breathing heavily as he began to think of all the possible outcomes that his decision to return to the battlefield would lead, and just how stupid of an idea that this was going to be. Yet he never once talked himself out of it and after retracting his head from the wall, he turned to face the war zone that only moments ago had been a peaceful day in the market. He took a deep breath and began to run forward, passing by familiar obstacles and familiar sites as he did so.

He paused as he grew near, ducking behind a nook that led into an alleyway as he began to survey the scene of what was going on, and see where he could best serve the two fighting the Hollow. The Quincy remained at range, firing shots off to do decent enough damage to distract the Hollow from the Shinigami that was fighting it as well. The Shinigami seemed to be in command, until he stepped in what Steiner knew was it kill zone, and in that instant everything went completely wrong. His eyes went wide as the beast impaled the Shinigami who had saved him only moments ago and upon seeing the Shinigami smile, he knew that things were going to get really fucked if he didn't do something at that moment. "What the hell are you doing!?", Steiner shouted as the beast instinctively turned to the weak human, a blemish on a battlefield of Gods, someone who didn't quite belong. But Steiner hadn't drawn its attention with the intent of being someone else to die in its' kill zone or someone to be smacked around by its tentacles.

Steiner had drawn its attention for many reasons. If the Shinigami had a plan, it would work better if the beast was distracted, secondly the Quincy who was firing shots that were landing could get an easier head shot if he got the beast to turn just a bit more, and lastly Steiner could fight the beast easier if he could fight it head on. Strategically it all made sense in his head, but internally he wondered if he was sound of mind to be running into the jaws of death armed with a sword and nothing more. Well you do have all that training under your belt. Steiner mused to himself as he switched into a proper defensive stance as he awaited the beast's actions. It reminded him of an old classic movie, where a sheriff had been hanging precariously off of a mast of a ship in the ocean, waiting for a shark to come, and attack him so he could blow up some kind of barrel in his mouth to destroy him. He just hoped that this was one shark who wouldn't be eating him. "Come and get me...", Steiner said in a low tone as he took deep and steady breaths to ready himself for whatever was about to happen.

A heroes purpose [Shio,Steiner] - Page 2 Empty Re: A heroes purpose [Shio,Steiner]

Shio's arms and legs were even now beginning to tingle with the faint beginning numbness that every shinigami knew to be the warning of impending death; he hadn't expected it this quickly, but this hollow apparently had an especially potent acidic touch, because he could already feel his body starting to break down beneath its tentacles, and he could feel the strength leaving his extremities so quickly it alarmed him; he had known that to lose here was tantamount to death. Again, a lesson that had been drilled into their heads with frightening regularity, and consistency: Against hollows, there was no surrender or retreat. You defeated the opponent, or you died.

But he hadn't accounted for how much it would hurt. The caustic toxins that unraveled his very flesh and muscle left him with the burning exhaustion that one normally only got after a very good workout, and left his mind feeling scrambled. For just a bit, he thought it may have been nice to just...pass out right here, where he could finally be away from it all. He felt his lids growing heavier every moment, and with each passing second he couldn't quite remember why it was he was fighting. Had it been to protect innocents? To defeat the dragon? To get the girl, and become king? Or was he simply here because he had nowhere else to be at this exact moment, and throwing his life away was less boring than a night of solitaire?

And then he heard the shouting of a human, yet again. His head snapped to the side, and he looked groggily at the boy, his brows knitting together, trying to fight off his confusion and concern. The boy was clearly watching, and still armed. And there was a girl, wasn't there? Or someone, firing projectiles from afar and kicking up small chunks of asphalt to nick against both him and the hollow, over and over. That meant the fight wasn't over. And that meant his death would inevitably lead to a greater burden on their shoulders. The monster would consume him, his remains serving as little more than a meager distraction from its endless hunger, and then it would go tracking down these two. Shio began to tug against the bindings around him, eyes rolling as he struggled to recollect his thoughts, to figure out what had led him here, and what to do next.

He coughed and inhaled, blood leaking from countless perfectly round puncture holes around his chest and pectorals, as he tried to speak. The first couple of times, he had to spit out wads of bloody phlegm, and get rid of the liquid that was draining into his throat even now.

"Ye gods above, who see all that transpires...no, no, that's not right. Get your -head- in it, Shio!"

He began to wriggle and twitch, hands tugging in a gesture strangely reminiscent of someone trying to dry their hands quickly, as he tried to shuck out of what little remained of his uniform...before pausing in place, paralyzed by the thought of what they may end up seeing underneath. Would winning here, would surviving here mean anything, if he had to go right back to questions and insinuations and accusations?

No. Gods help him, there were some things he had to take with his grave to him, even if they made it a very early grave.

Remembered a small object on the side of her ankle, and quickly pulled it out the weapon in question was a small short sword she kept along the side of her ankle in case she had to get up close and personal with her targets and this was the time to use it...however if she decides to fight the hollow head on it'd be dangerous especially with it being able to spew acid from it's tendrils and they have powerful capabilities to pierce through the flesh of spiritual beings. And that's what the hollow did to the shinigami; she couldn't just stand there and let them both get hurt or worse die but the shinigami was smiling it was a indication that he had a plan and whatever it was she isn't going to mess it up. Staring at it for a few seconds before making her decision to give the sword to the human after all he seemed proficent enough and if he got two of them he could duel-wield them increasing his chance of cutting potential and not be detrimented by standing in a stance leaving him wide open. Estimating that the human and shinigami were about 10-20 feet away from her it'd she took a few steps back and ran as fast as she could before she used her right foot to get a good amount of air time and before she hit the ground utilizing the reishi in the air and onto her left foot to get a huge amount of time in the air, she looked at the ground and saw the shinigami laying on the ground the hollows tendrils that pierced his flesh while the human stood their utilizing a sword stance it appeared.

Her heart felt like it was about to sink into her stomach and if she was a powerless human this would be the most stupidest of her entire life, luckily though she had quincy blood in her and she could use an ability similar to shunpo and a blood related ability that increased her durability albiet it was minor.

So she took off her sword from along her thigh spinning it around before throwing it at the human with small amount of force her voice was booming that the human and shinigami would hear her.

Hey human, Catch!

If the human caught the sword with no problems it'd give him a huge advantage against the hollow in front of him however if not it would least strike the ground in front of him or strike the hollow. Whatever the case ritsuko finally used the last bit of her energy to use hirenyuku again this time moving back before releasing her sniper rifle aiming quickly and shooting a reishi bullet at the hollow; she would now be on the ground behind the hollow with her sniper in hand hoping that the plan worked.

Artist: Sons of Amon - Song: God Mode - Word Count: 1,129

The young man's eyes went wide as he realized the shinigami was struggling and at that very moment he realized that he had just put himself in as a distraction to nothing. He tensed up visibly, his whole body telling him that if he even moved an inch closer toward the fight that was going on that he would be put down like a dog, and that he needed to be careful now that he was out in the open standing before a being that had not only overpowered a shinigami, but had absorbed the Quincy's shots like they were nothing. For a few seconds all Steiner could think of was running, but something kept him from doing so. Was it a shallow sense of pride that had overcome Steiner's own survival instincts telling him to run away? Was it a foolish belief that maybe this was just how things were meant to be, with him staring down the maw of a beast that could swallow him whole if it wanted to? No, it was simply Steiner's Heroic Aspirations. To be a hero you had to do the dirty work, you had to stare death in the face and spit in it, and right now Steiner, as powerless as he was, was not going to allow some Hollow to get the best of him.

Staring at the helpless shinigami and seeing the pain on his face as the creature's acid began to cause internal damage and external damage, Steiner knew he had to do something. He had to stop this madness before it escalated any further, before anyone else got hurt by this mad beast standing before him looking to do nothing, but kill and eat. He clenched the hand which held the sword he had borrowed for this battle, took a deep breath, and began to assess his options. In truth he had set himself up for failure by appearing before the large Hollow who had a great deal of weapons at its' disposal instead of going for a quick sneak attack to level the playing field. But now he was just standing there in plain view looking at this thing with no way to defend himself if he decided to go in. Sure, he had a sword, but one sword could only protect from so many angles, and he doubted that his reflexes would help him defeat something like this. Especially if a Shinigami who could use shunpo had been caught in this creatures trap.

Yet with every passing second that Steiner stood there evaluating his plan of attack he knew the Shinigami was losing blood and even more so the will to live was leaving the shinigami. He had to act and he had to do it soon, any more waiting around, and more than likely there would be nothing left, but a pile of corpses on this street where the three of them had once stood. Right before Steiner was about to move in he heard the yelling of the female Quincy, causing him to look up as she flung the sword at him. For a second, Steiner thought that maybe the Quincy was trying to attack him, and kill him dead for some reason or another, but as he realized what was going on Steiner reached for the blade. He would catch it by its' handle and experimentally swing it around as he did so, testing its' weight, and its' length to make sure that the blade's full potential could be used.

For a moment, Steiner closed his eyes and began to drown out all the surrounding noise, and allowing only his heartbeat's steady beating to be the only thing he heard. After a few seconds of this, Steiner opened his eyes which were now no longer blue, but the color purple, and then charged forward toward the creature. It seemed as though Steiner was possessed as the Hollow's natural instincts began to take control, it lashing out with its' tentacles trying to hungrily assault the young hero of honor. However, Steiner's reflexes seemed faster than before, and he felt lighter as well as his arms, seemed to by instinct, come down with quick blows using the swords to cut through the hollow's weapons. The beast screamed, releasing black blood over Steiner's body as it did so, but Steiner was dead-set on cutting his way to the shinigami, all other things were fundamentally shoved to the back of his mind in favor of pure swordplay, true swordsmanship.

If one were watching from the outside of the blood bath, one would assume that the young man cutting his way through the Hollow's tendrils had powers of some sort with how he was performing, but there were no powers here. This was just natural, the fruit of years of dedication to honing the athletics and skills necessary to perform these actions with fluidity and precision. Tentacles would occasionally hit Steiner, glancing blows that left acidic slime on Steiner's body burning into his flesh with a sizzle, and causing steam to rise from his body, but Steiner wouldn't be denied. He would not allow the shinigami to die. Steiner was consumed with swordplay, he was his sword, his sword was him, and as he did so the hollow had no answer for a man who was totally in tune with himself. Steiner, for all the damage he was doing to the Hollow, however was taking a great deal of punishment himself, tentacles slashing through flesh, and burning him with acid at multiple terms. If Steiner wasn't in a trance, he would have felt it, and he would have more than likely backed down, but Steiner was his sword and his sword was not done purging the filth from in front of him.

After a while, Steiner bloodied and battered, arrived at his destination covered in the blood of the Hollow his eyes glazed over, and his mind blank from this unknown experience. Without a moment's hesitation he jumped up from a pile of dead tentacles deteriorating into nothing and slashed through the tentacles holding the shinigami in place. In that moment, Steiner just fell, and landed hard on the ground face first with a loud "thump". He was in the kill zone, but his body had given out on him and his eyes faded back to blue as he lay there unable to move, his muscles tired beyond anything he had ever felt in his life. The Hollow, enraged by the young man's assault turned to look at the fallen hero, and began to reach out with one of its' clawed feet to smash Steiner then and there. "Smile you son of a bitch...", Steiner said quoting the sheriff from the classic movie from so long ago.

A heroes purpose [Shio,Steiner] - Page 2 Empty Re: A heroes purpose [Shio,Steiner]

Sat Jul 08, 2017 9:37 pm
The boy was insane. There was just no other explanation, for this degree of vigor and passion. He was charging directly into the fray, striking down the foe with such focus and certainty that Shio knew it in a split second; this was a boy who could never truly understand what he'd been through. He was yet another of those who would make tepid, poorly-thought out responses, and shove platitude after platitude down his throat, all of it boiling down to the same thing:

He would never be able to understand. He'd try to use any number of nice-sounding phrases and he'd make claims that he could right a wrong years in the past; he'd insist with his sword and his will he could make the world a better place, and even more dangerously he'd believe it. Shio couldn't quite break it to him that there were some problems that couldn't be overcome with force, or passion, or any degree of desire. That this was a circumstance where working harder would net him nothing at all to show for it.

Which meant he couldn't let the boy see anyone die here. He'd sacrificed his life against a creature of this caliber, and at the very least Shio owed it to him to commemorate that moment. His hand was freed with a well-placed strike of the human's blade, and with it his hand immediately slipped to his hip. Not to assuage the pain; he was used to pain far worse than this, pain that had hurt him to his very core, that had shaken everything he believed in. No, his hand touched against his hip to hold his tattered robes in place, through the violent hand motions that were to come.

"The northern star, the southern seas, and the eastern breeze reject you, foul heathen! Let yourself be struck deaf, dumb, and blind by the judgment of the gods! Bakudo number 30: Shitotsu Sansen!"

He didn't move his hand so much as his entire body, pouring every ounce of force into it he could; the hollow had paused for a second or two in the process of his incantation, baffled by the words it couldn't comprehend, and by the sudden surging of spiritual energy. But now it was clearly poised to strike, and Shio had one shot...

He sketched the triangle, easily as large as his own body, in two seconds flat, and pushed his palm against it, shoving so hard he stumbled forward. The barrier shot outwards, striking true at the center of mass. There was a squeal halfway between a tea kettle that was overheating, and a bird, as it was shoved backwards nearly an entire city block. Debris and rubble were shoved aside unceremoniously with its passing, before it was finally pinned to a skyscraper with force enough to shake its foundations. Shio approached the downed human, pausing just long enough to check for a pulse, and then smiling faintly down at him.

"Not today. You deserve just a little longer, after that fight."

He then disappeared, in a swishing motion that sent him directly in front of the hollow. Without ceremony, with the same degree of casualness he would've peeled a potato, Shio drew his tanto and sliced directly down the center of its mask, leaving the beast wriggling in pain for a split second longer, before it peeled back to reveal a young woman, cute in a tomboyish sort of way. He gently pressed the hilt of his blade to her forehead, and nodded somewhat.

"I'm certain you hold no original sin. Go get in line, and wait for your number. You'll be back in no time at all, it'll feel like."

Finally, the threat dealt with, and the civilians safe, Shio turned away from the debris, and fell to his knees, smiling weakly.

"Shio, you idiot...if the instructors saw you like this, they would give you so many demerits."

The man uttered more words as she saw what appeared to be a triangle appear in front of the shinigami before pushing his hand up against it causing a large shockwave to appear upwards the beast stared at the shinigami with a puzzled look and almost in a instant the immediate force of the blast knocked it back causing it to slam into a skyscraper almost causing it to rumble a bit, for a second there ritsuko thought the building would collapse but luckily it didn't which was good for both herself and the men.

If the building started to crumble she wouldn't have time to save both of them due to her lack of speed and limited use of hirenyuku regardless the shinigami finally landed the finishing blow as he sliced the hollows mask off revealin judging by the body type it had to be a female for how old she is ritsuko will never know but what's important is that the battle was over and although it only made them stronger...hell even ritsuko cracked a smile for these two brave men risking their lives to protect others and she respected that.

Pointing the hilt of his sword onto the woman's head as she saw a bright light shine as it flew into the air ready for the next step in the soul cycle...
Ritsuko remembered what she was and being a good person it was obvious that she had to check the condition of the two brave men that helped her in defeating the hollow; she first went up to the shinigami who was probably exhausted after that last attack he did on the hollow..even though she doesn't understand how shinigami work it was still her job to get them someplace safe and she knew exactly where to find it.

She then had her attentiom towards the downed human next to her and just stared at him, even though he is crazy ritsuko did like one thing about him though and thatwas his courage and charisma he stood up to that hollow despite being injured and he had a sense of bravey in which she had never seen before in her whole life.

"I need to take you guys both to a hospital, i'm not sure if you'll be able to walk let alone stand up"
