CALM BEFORE THE STORM

The chilly night sky bit at the male's exposed arms and fingers, sending chills that quickly snapped him back to reality. As he soared through the air, he looked down, smiling as he saw her. His arms remained safely secure around her, keeping her close to him. If time would stop right here and now, he wouldn't mind at all -- so long as he was with her.

But, where they were going was somewhere...very special. A place that Henrex originally thought that he would never return to. The events that happened there -- so much blood spilled...so many bodies, with all of it being swirled into a blaze that would burn everything to the ground. It was obvious why he never intended to return at first.

The memories that it contained were too painful to bear.

But now? As Taichou was with him, he no longer felt overwhelmed by these intense feelings of sorrow, nostalgia, and fear. She deserved to know where he came from...and how he came to be in the spiritual world. Thus, as they came closer and closer to the mountain, Henrex descended lower and lower, silently touching the summit as his arms opened to release his companion.

He turned to her, softly brushing the hair from her eyes as a warm, loving smile spread across his features.

"I wanted to take you here, because...this is where I died."

Taking a step away from her and turning around, he stared at the blackened ruin around him. Buildings, once healthy and prosperous, now charred and tattered. The faded, ancient scent of blood filled the top of the mountain like ozone, blackened red sprayed across the ground, centuries old and long since fresh.

Suddenly...air felt like it had been stolen from his lungs. The overwhelming nature of all of the events of the past felt suffocating as he stood there, frozen and unable to move. Soon, he lowered his head to the ground, his voice only able to be higher than a mumble:

"...This is my home, Wudang Mountain."

The stench of blood overwhelmed the Serpent woman's senses, as her golden eyes scanned over the ruins, her jaw slackening, falling agape. In an eerie way, this place was heartwarming. Perhaps not the place, but the gesture. It showed the more tender side of Henrex, which Taichou wanted to cradle and keep safe, so that something so precious would not shatter.

She felt naturally attuned to Henrex, that as soon as the breath left his lungs, she was able to feel it. It caused a burning, clawing, gnawing itch in her throat that was unsettling, and felt like it would tear through her like the gnashing of teeth. Instinctively, the eldest Vael felt herself gravitating towards the male for whom she felt such high esteem; her feet carrying him closer to him — her heavily tattooed arms reaching out, to pull him into a steadying embrace. Her reishi burst forth from her body, enveloping him from within; forming a gentle, undulating cocoon around him.

Slowly, the undulation began to grow, applying pressure to his lungs — coaxing breath back into them.

If he didn't have the strength to breathe, she'd do it for him.

STEALTH FORCE CAPTAIN

Everything seemed to slam back into him, overwhelming his senses and causing his body to react in the only way it knew how at this moment -- freeze. The recesses of his mind, the place that Kyoki tried to keep away from the present moment, suddenly surged to the surface. Thus, as a result, his pressured mind began to leak projections of his madness.

More vivid flashes of the past burst to life in his eyes and Henrex took a step back, very visually terrified as he looked onward. However, as he felt the warmth of Taichou drape around him, it was only then that he realized that he wasn't, and couldn't, breathe. At first, the realization was terrifying. But -- it wasn't long before he was able to return to his senses, shaky breaths entering and leaving him as his heart pounded like mad,

His arms slowly rose to touch her own, closing his eyes as he leaned into her. It almost felt as if she was keeping him sane -- keeping him alive. He always felt so safe when he was with her, and it was something that he so desperately wanted to keep. He wanted to always feel safe, feel this...influx of emotions that always came whenever she was near. So, as his cheeks briefly dimmed to pink, he found himself nestling into her.

But, the moment was soon cut off as he heard soft creaking coming from the remains of his home. Taichou wouldn't hear it -- no one could hear his own madness but him. His head slowly turned to the origin of the noise, watching as wood was pushed away, and creatures made entirely of shadow crawled from their place as vacant, milky eyes set themselves on Henrex, leading them to begin to crawl towards him.

His eyes widened and his hand slowly went for his sword. Even then -- they were not shaken or deterred. Ergo, as he panicked and desperately searched for a way out, he stepped forward, drawing his sword and gave a single swing as he channeled his prowess over storms to gather the wind in the nearby vicinity to create a massive gust of wind, shouting:

"GET AWAY FROM ME!"

As the wind passed through the shadows, there was a shimmer from them, before they vanished, a soft, eerie whisper calling out to him as they returned to nothing. Once again, he felt paralyzed, unable to do anything as they disappeared, their whispers slowly evolving into long, sorrowful wails. The cocoon that surrounded him was the only thing that brought him back to reality once again, his terrified, labored breathing becoming much more apparent as he was able to recognize Taichou's warm embrace.

Bringing her arms close to his chest and clasping her hands with his own, Henrex was quick to sink at this moment, his time of recovery helped only further by her presence.

Taichou did not waiver. She stood firm — her cheek nestled between Henrex's shoulderblades — merely shifting her weight in order to take a step as he did. Her fingers were splayed across his chest, caressing the smooth pectoral muscles that lay beneath — a soothing gesture.

She was unsure of how to comfort him, or others for that matter, due to her perpetual status as a "loner," within Rukongai, however, when it came to Henrex, she knew for a fact that she would move heaven, Earth, and K-World in order to be there for him — to comfort him, take care of him, be his greatest confidant and confessor, all of it. It was extremely foreign territory to her, but Taichou took it with stride.

As of late, the Demoness had been blinded by her own sorrows — ultimately leading to the abrupt abandonment of Henrex — her intentions were pure regarding her disappearance, and the circumstances surrounding it. It weighed heavily within her heart that the woman whom she had once vowed to rule with world with, was now gone, in an instant, and now, the Vael's heart was even heavier knowing how much her absence had crushed, and wounded Henrex. She felt guilty; but that, in and of itself is another matter entirely.

Words bubbled up from within her throat before she could think.

"Henny... You're alright, now. You're safe. I'm here...." A lump had formed, tangling itself in her vocal cords, halting her speech with a hiccupped sob, as tears began to flood her tear ducts, soaking the back of his shirt.

"I'm here."

The world in his eyes slowly reverted back to normal. No shadows, no manifestations of the past, nothing. Everything was just how it had been. The scent of ancient blood, the charred remnants of buildings...it was just how it had always been, for so very long: Japan's largest graveyard. A place where memories slept, most of which were likely to never awaken.

Taichou abandoning him for so long had been so detrimental to him, it was part of what caused such slipping sanity to occur in him. It was this...loneliness that he felt when she was gone, to the point where it would physically hurt him. There were countless times where he wanted nothing more than just to be in her presence, becoming lost in her eyes, her voice, laughing and smiling along with her.

Such a long heartache that was only absolved by her return -- but he was scared. Scared of her leaving again, scared of him falling into that hole, that...abyss again. He hated those times, the times where he felt so alone and helpless -- the times where he just wanted to isolate himself from the world, or even the times of more...severe results.

But -- suddenly, he felt his heart sink.

The sound of Taichou's sobs only caused Henrex to come to tears as well.

"No...no, no, don't cry...please, don't cry..."

Thus, as a result, his next words left him before he was able to think -- his true, full emotions coming to the surface and bleeding out into the world as tears of his own slid down his face.

"Tai, please don't leave...don't abandon me again..."

Turning around and wrapping his arms around her, he pulled her close to him and -- unable to control his emotions, he kissed her. His arms slid around her shoulders and held her there, not wanting to let her go. Soon, he broke their kiss, before pulling her to him and letting her head on his shoulder as he did the same to her.

With this, there was one thing that was so very clear.

"Tai...I love you."

"Tai...I love you." Henrex's words flooded her core with a burst of light, like the warmth of a spring day.

Her arms coiled around his shoulders, returning his tight embrace. The tears kept coming, though, soaking his shirt with palpable heat. A mixture of her despair, now mingling with happiness... An interesting amalgam, that was for sure.

Her lips parted, voice surprisingly steady, almost boisterous as she began to speak:

"I... Love you too, Henny... You have me. I'm not going anywhere. I'm not running. Not anymore."

Desire, desperation, love, despair -- all of these things swirled within Henrex's core as his emotions bled to the surface, unable to let go of his love as his arms held her firmly, the rest of his body quivering. Henrex wanted nothing else at this moment, other than to have her here, in his arms. Taichou had been a change in his life like none other, someone who -- even through their first encounter and meeting -- had formed a connection that couldn't be replicated by anyone else.

Thus, as Taichou said herself that she wasn't going anywhere, that he had her, it only made his embrace evermore tight, a hand rising from his side to softly run through her hair as an act of comfort. He wanted to say it again. Again, and again -- it was never enough for him to say it. He loved her, and there was nothing that could change that.

The hand in her hair lowered to her face, a thumb gently wiping her eyes of her tears, tilting her head upward just enough for him to plant another kiss on Taichou's lips, using this connection to take more of her negative emotions to himself and consuming it. This caused him to get a taste of how pained Taichou's own heart was, truly feeling and experiencing the sorrows that she had felt for all this time.

As he broke the kiss, Henrex just leaned into Taichou, whispering in her ear:

"We've both been hurting so much..."

His hands softly traced over her back, gently rubbing her shoulder blades as he rested her head on his own shoulder.

Their suffering had gone on for long enough. They knew now, more than ever, that each other were worth suffering for a thousand times over. It wasn't just their force of will or anything of the sort. They had just learned a way to see inside each other...

And take away their pain.
