Here he was, in another random city. He didn't even remember its name; he had done this so many times that he didn't bother to check where he was going anymore. His new life wasn't feeling as good as he hoped it would. He had been hopping from town to town, city to city, continually searching for someone that could fight against him. Sure, he wasn't that strong, and most opponents who'd be willing to fight could probably wipe the floor with him. But still, he had to start somewhere.

That said, he wasn't stupid. He had been avoiding any area that looked too outlandish. He wanted a fight, not a deathmatch. He needed to live to become stronger, doing so while torn to pieces would be exceedingly more difficult. He supposed he could find an organization to join, but he'd rather not do that. On one side you had some groups that were goody two shoes and wanted to do nothing but self-sacrifice to protect the innocent and shit like that. On the other, you had a bunch of wild psychopaths that would sooner kill you than help you do anything.

No, Alexander wasn't a group person. He preferred to go it alone. After all, his primary goal was to become strong enough to matter in this world, and doing that by anything but his own power would prove nothing. He would get what he wanted, and he would crush whatever tried to stop him, and he would not die trying. Nobody planned to die, after all. Nobody smart anyway. Well, now that he thought about it, he supposed having a friend or two wouldn't hurt, as long as they didn't kill him or get him killed.

Now, what exactly was he here for, one might ask? He was here to do something that he had done already so many times that he lost count. Well, that wasn't saying much, as he tended not to bother counting things that didn't need counting. But he had been doing it for a while now. He would hop to another town or city, usually by hitching a ride on top of a train or something. He would then find a relatively secluded spot in the area, away from too much attention but close enough for what he did next to work, hopefully. This time he found himself in an area of small hills, just a mile or so away from the city.

Alexander concentrated his malefic energy. He didn't focus it anywhere, he just drew forth as much of it as he could. It would seemingly bubble up to cover his skin and clothing, forming a blotchy coating of shifting energy. He would focus on this energy, its wildness, its destructive potential, its will to annihilate all that stand in its path. He would focus hard on these aspects, and he would push them away from himself. He would broadcast his energy to all who may be strong enough to sense it, a, albeit perhaps small, beacon of wild, destructive energy, hoping it would be compelling enough to attract someone's attention.

Law

Artist: YYH OST - Song: Preparation theme - Word Count: 409

Law quickly rushed out of the bar he'd been enjoying a drink in, leaving the lovely ladies whose attention he'd garnered wondering what had just happened. There was a time and a place for flirting. Now was not that time. He could sense the destructive intent radiating outwards, not far from where he currently was. Not that he was some big hero. In fact, he didn't really give a fuck what happened, as long as he wasn't bored by it. Stepping on to the sidewalk he downed the rest of the contents of his glass, then tossed it to the ground. The sound of glass shattering filled his ears, and he could hear a voice yelling at him to come pay his tab. He raised his right hand up, slightly above his head, then extended his middle finger before the bar door swung closed.

He wasn't one to rush, and now that he had a good sense of this energy it wouldn't get away from him easily, so he took his time as he traveled. From what he could tell it wouldn't exactly be a huge challenge, but that was fine by him. He'd been itching for a fight lately, and there was shit else to do in this backwater town. About fifteen minutes later he found himself in a rather hilly area with little else around. He could still see the town over his shoulder, but he'd left it's boundary some time ago. It really was a tiny little shit hole.

A few feet away from him, atop the largest hill around, Law found the source of the energy at last. A human, a teenager by the looks of it, although he couldn't be sure if that was actually true. There was no one else around, hell there was nothing else around at all. Only the hills surrounded them, though in the distance he occasionally saw cars traveling the road.

"Hey, shithead! You lookin' for trouble? Well so am I."

Law wasted no more time, traveling towards the top of the hill with a shunpo, then launching a roundhouse kick towards the strangers head. The kick was nothing to write home about, just a probing blow. He didn't even use the momentum he'd gained by using his shunpo, coming to a full stop directly in front of the stranger before launching it. If the stranger couldn't handle this then there wouldn't be much point in continuing the battle.

Once Alexander had released his energy, he waited. He always waited a while before giving up. After all, there wasn't anything better to do. And so he waited, expecting this to be another miss. He supposed that if this didn't work out, he could always try to find some hollows or something similar. But then again, slaughtering random mooks didn't provide much in the way of experience. He couldn't get stronger by throwing his powers around; he had to hone them until they bent to his will. And fighting stronger opponents was an excellent way to strengthen that said will.

And talking about stronger opponents, one was coming. Alexander immediately perked up with mild surprise. He could sense someone coming. He could feel their energy, albeit faintly. He wasn't too good at this yet, but they stood out from the riffraff around them. They were taking their time, but they were making their way towards him. It was the reason he was able to detect them in the first place. The closer they came, the more he could sense them. It was for this reason that when they finally arrived within view, he was already looking towards them, watching them make their way towards him.

As they drew close, he dimmed his energy as it was no longer needed to catch anyone's attention. He had apparently caught the attention of the man before him. He was just about to greet him too but was preemptively interrupted. And what this man said immediately changed Alexander's attitude. He had spent many years in service to one of the New York Mobs, and in his time there, he had learned a few things. One of those things was that when somebody said something like that, guns started getting drawn immediately after. It seemed like just one of those phrases people liked to say to sound cool before trying to pump bullets into you.

Alexander would immediately prepare for an attack. One may not happen, but then again, one may very well happen. It was much better to be safe than sorry. And so he would ready himself, namely by charging up his Malefic Energy, preparing to release it. However, his opponent didn't give him much time to do this. Immediately after his opponent had addressed him, he had already sprung an attack, just as Alexander had anticipated. And it was a fast one too. In an instant, his opponent was in front of him, though he seemed to pause for just an instant before swinging his foot around on a collision course with Alexander's head.

No, Alexander wouldn't have any of this. He came here to fight, not to get ninja-kicked to the face and KO'd. In the brief time that he saw that kick coming, realizing it was a high one, he ducked. His energy wasn't charged enough to unleash an attack at ideal strength, but it would have to do. And so, while doing his best to duck under his opponent's lifted leg, he would unleash his counterattack. Pointing his left palm at the man's crotch and his right palm at the leg above him, aiming to grab the latter, he would fire with a mental command of "Malefic Stream!", releasing crackling red energy at both of his targets.

Judging by the lowered charge of his attack and the fact that it was split into two directions probably meant that it wouldn't do a terrible amount of damage. However, his energy did tend not to play nice with, well, anything. He had also screamed the mental command in his head in an attempt to better focus his attack, hoping to at least put a bit of force behind it, perhaps making his opponent pull away or, less likely, actually injure them to some degree. The latter was probably not going to happen, and even if it did, the damage would be minor if his opponent had at least some form of natural defense.

Law

Artist: YYH OST - Song: Preparation theme - Word Count: 344

As the violent red energy traveled towards him Law quickly pushed off of the ground with his left leg, traveling several feet into the air and leaving a small indentation in the dirt where he'd been standing. Repositioning himself slightly while he rose into the air he narrowly avoided what would have been a nasty shot to his crotch, although his opponent did make contact with his leg. Even though the contact was extremely brief he could feel the destructive energy breaking down the tissue and muscle fibers. He soon realized that the damage wouldn't be too extensive, but just in case he focused his own energy into his leg to counteract it. That was all he could be bothered to do at the moment, he could worry about injuries when this was done with. After coming to that conclusion he set up for his next attack.

Raising his right leg straight up and fully extending it, Law aimed to bash his opponent in the face with his heel as he came back down to the ground. If he were successful the attack would be nothing to laugh at, but Law was still not using his full strength. He always enjoyed having a bit of fun before things got too serious. In the past he'd opened his fights up full blast, and that had always left him with a sour taste in his mouth. Fighting made him feel so alive, he couldn't let the battle end so soon. Especially considering the fact that he was rather curious about his opponents method of attack now, and he wanted to see as much of it as he could. It also helped that Alexander had handled his attack rather well, as if that initial kick had connected he would have taken out his anger about the fact that he wouldn't be receiving an interesting fight on him. It certainly hadn't been handled optimally though. He could tell that this kid still had much to learn, even if he did have potential and a bit of natural talent.

Okay, good, Alexander had succeeded in pushing his opponent back, at least temporarily. That means he wasn't powerless against them. With that in mind, he began formulating his next move. He needed to act fast, as his opponent was already coming in for another attack. He needed to make the most efficient move possible. Any advantage he could gain against his opponent would also be appreciated. He considered his options. He could counterattack directly. While his opponent felt stronger than him, his Malefic Energy was nothing to laugh at. A solid hit could have devastating effects. However, his opponent wasn't giving him much time to charge his energy, so he needed to buy some time. An idea came to Alexander, one that may solve this issue.

He rolled forward. Considering he was already ducking down, he could move into a rolling motion very quickly. Rolling forward also meant it would allow him to get a few feet behind his opponent, considering it was pretty hard to turn around while in mid-air. He wouldn't roll directly forward, no, he wasn't performing a somersault. He would perform more of a safety roll, rolling on one shoulder and twisting around so that he would land crouched and facing his opponent's back. Hoping this would give him enough time, he would begin charging his energy for another attack. He considered using Malefic Bolt but decided that a decisive strike would probably benefit him more than trying to set up a defense that his opponent may simply slip through.

With another mental command of "Malefic Stream!", violent streaks of red would blast out of his outstretched right arm. This time, his attack would have a substantial charge behind it, capable of tearing apart most of what it touched. Considering his opponent was stronger than him, it probably couldn't take him out in one hit. No, it probably couldn't even take him out in multiple hits, but it could still do some significant damage. Alexander began thinking of other things he could do, considering it was never a smart idea to be idle in combat, especially at such a close range. One thing that immediately came to mind was his hood. He quickly pulled it down with his left hand, the one currently not blasting out a violent stream of energy.

The reason he would pull his hood down was so that he could make use of his peripheral vision. While his hood was nice and all, so was staying alive. Judging from the way his opponent opened combat, he could move very quickly. Against a speedy opponent, Alexander wanted to be able to see as much of his surroundings as possible. And on the subject of observing one's surroundings, Alexander now noticed that his opponent was carrying a sword. From the way he opened combat with kicking attacks, this could mean that he either didn't excel at using his sword or just didn't think it was worth using on him, or at least opening combat with. Whatever the reason may be, it still meant that he had a sword and that Alexander should prepare for him to use it.

Law

Artist: YYH OST - Song: Preparation theme - Word Count: 459

As he came back down to earth Law noticed his opponent rolling out of the way of his attack, which was essentially a jumping axe kick. He wasn't concerned. From what he'd seen so far his opponent couldn't match him in speed, although this was a pretty fast reaction. That told Law that his opponent was, if nothing else, quick on his feet. A capable thinker, at least when it came to battle sense. He peered over his shoulder to see exactly what the kid was up to though. He seemed to be preparing for a stronger version of the attack he'd already used, aiming it where Law would land. It would be a test of his own speed then.

As he hit the ground Law began moving immediately, using his shunpo once more. He managed to step to the side just before the energy blast would have hit him, then drew his zanpakuto, which took the form of a nodachi. The time for fun and games was coming to an end. It was time to see exactly what his opponent was capable of, and if he could stand up to a real test of skill. He would rely only on his zanjutsu for now though, no reason to go overboard just yet. There was also the fact that he was extremely conservative when it came to displaying his actual power. Something he'd learned from Urahara. In fact, in his opinion it was one of the most valuable things he'd ever been taught. Of course the combat training was useful, but always having contingency plans, and never displaying your actual ability were lessons that Law had ingrained within himself completely. He was the most unpredictable of opponents, Urahara couldn't even assume to know what he would do these days.

Wielding the blade in one hand Law began to move towards his opponent at a rather slow pace, gauging the reaction they would have. As soon as he came in range, which didn't take long as his blade was much longer than the average katana, he aimed a shallow strike at Alexander's cheek, just next to his right eye, with deadly precision. At the last moment however, he altered the course of the blade, sending it speeding straight towards the others arm. If it were to connect Alexander would find himself with a gash running the length of his upper arm.

The blade traveled far quicker than one would expect something of its size to move, as to Law it was weightless, and he'd trained with it from an incredibly young age. He was actually fairly curious as to what would happen next. Either the fight would escalate into something genuinely enjoyable, or he'd been wasting his time thus far.

Oh great, his opponent appeared to be fast, something Alexander was not. That wasn't to say he didn't have a fast reaction speed. No, a life of gunfire will lead to your reaction speed increasing to at least a moderate extent. However, he wasn't very physically fast, at least compared to other supernatural beings. Compared to normal people he was fast, but his opponent wasn't normal. Yeah, normal people didn't carry around excessively long swords. As soon as his opponent would draw said long sword of theirs, Alexander would rethink his strategy. His opponent seemed too fast for his Malefic Stream. Alexander also didn't have any defense against slashing weapons. He would need to play a bit more defensively.

First, he needed to get some distance. His opponent's sword could outrange him in melee, especially considering his opponent's speed advantage. Luckily for him, however, Alexander could be a ranged fighter. As soon as his opponent started to approach him with sword drawn, Alexander would jump backward, backpedaling until he had a few meters of distance from his opponent. With a short mental command of 'Malefic Bolt.', red spheres would begin to emerge from all over his body, placing themselves in a loose semicircular wall between him and his opponent. Each sphere was about four inches in diameter and would invade anything that touched them, causing it to explode shortly after that.

Alexander would keep the wall loose enough to stretch a good few meters to each side and upwards, but each sphere was close enough to the spheres around it that it would prove very difficult to squeeze between them. If they tried to do so, he would bring the spheres closer together, attacking them as they tried to pass through. Soon after he started producing them, the wall would contain dozens of spheres in a full semicircle positioned about two meters from himself. He made sure to keep it around that distance as he didn't want his opponent stabbing through for a quick strike. If his opponent sped up or in some other way impeded this wall from forming, Alexander would group them closer to himself in a smaller formation as an emergency defense.

Law

Artist: YYH OST - Song: Preparation theme - Word Count: 319

Noticing that his opponent was now focusing more on defense, Law decided to step the offense up into overdrive. He hadn't been utilizing his shunpo to its full extent so far, but that was about to change. He realized that it would be exceedingly difficult to slip through the orbs his opponent had created, but they also seemed to only defend his front. If he could make it around to his enemy's back then they would be of no use, assuming he was able to do so before the other could react to it. But perhaps he could do something a bit better than that.

Putting on every bit of speed he could possibly manage, Law darted past his opponent diagonally and to the left, until he'd reached a reasonable distance to avoid the orbs on his way back around. Not taking any time to stop he then made another dash towards the right side of his opponent's body, in more of a semi-circular path. The logic behind this being that if his opponent turned towards him he would hopefully be in a great position to attack him from behind, and even if he didn't turn, the change-up would likely be confusing. Either way, having dedicated himself to an attack, he would press on. If traveling through the orbs was what it took to land a real blow, then so be it. He would deal with whatever damage came his way after the battle had concluded. Once he was in range Law would make a quick diagonal slash at his opponents midsection, followed by an even quicker horizontal follow up. At the moment he wasn't aiming to do any lasting damage, these attacks would cut fairly shallowly if they were to connect. Ever the cat and mouse game. Law didn't generally outright kill those he decided to fight with randomly either way. Unless he got carried away, that is.

Seeing his opponent dart to the left, Alexander turned towards that direction. He raised his hand, preparing to fire off a Malefic Stream, only to find his opponent no longer there. Alexander thought as fast as he could. His opponent was much, much faster than him. If he wanted to have any chance of winning, he still had to play defensively. He needed to keep his wall between him and his opponent, and if his opponent didn't stay on one side, he wouldn't either. Moving as fast as he could, Alexander would dive into another roll, aiming to turn around as he did so. He intended to roll through his barrier, putting in his opponent's way once again. If his opponent came up behind him, the wall of Malefic Bolts would close in on him, attempting to cage him in.

However, due to the difference in their speed, Alexander didn't quite make it in time. Just as he began moving towards his barrier, he felt his opponent's slash make contact. There was an instant of pain as it made its path across his back, then another as it made contact again. Alexander gritted his teeth. It hurt, but he had to move through it. He had to keep on his feet. He had to keep thinking about how to outmaneuver his opponent. Stumbling slightly from the attack, he still managed to turn around as he finished rolling, now facing his opponent. The orbs were once more between them, and with a mental command, began shooting forward. He had to let loose if he wanted to fight his opponent, no more playing around.

The wall of Malefic Bolts would attempt to surround and begin converging on his opponent, hopefully restricting his movement. Wasting no time, Alexander would begin charging his energy. First, he would deploy more Malefic Bolts, shooting them towards the top of the enclosing wall, topping it off to make a dome. Second, he'd charge for a moment before unleashing a Malefic Stream towards his opponent, or so it seemed. He would direct the stream in their direction, but angled downwards, expecting them to dodge. Should they do so, his attack would impact the ground beneath them in a large area, violently tearing it asunder. He put more power into this move than his previous ones, causing the ground to explode, sending earthen shrapnel upwards.

Even if said shrapnel turned out to be a bunch of dirt, it could still serve to distract his opponent. With Malefic Bolts coming from above and the ground below being torn to pieces, Alexander would hope to catch his opponent airborne, or at least off guard. Charging up for another moment, he would unleash a Malefic Stream aimed straight at them. Even if he were to miss, the attack could serve to distract his opponent long enough for the enclosing dome of Malefic Bolts to begin impacting, which would once more tear apart the earth within, and potentially his opponent with it. Alexander had avoided using this much power earlier in the fight, not wanting to slaughter his opposition. However, he now knew his opponent could probably handle it.

Law

Artist: YYH OST - Song: Preparation theme - Word Count: 596

Finally having inflicted an actual wound on his opponent, Law smirked. Not a moment later though he was forced into action again. His opponent was deploying those pesky spheres once more, and he couldn't stay in one spot for too long lest he become surrounded by them. Acting quickly as the orbs closed in on his position, he ran to the side, narrowly escaping through a rapidly closing gap. Just before he was completely free of their grasp though, one of the orbs caught his left leg. The same leg that had earlier received the same treatment Due to what he assumed was mainly luck his opponent's attacks were connecting with the one part of his body that could actually have an effect on this battle.

The pain was nothing he couldn't deal with, but this could actually turn out to be a problem. Speed was one of the main factors he relied on, and if his leg was too severely injured his capabilities would be severely hampered. As the flesh and muscle was once more eaten away at Law gritted his teeth and bore through it. He had taken a much more direct this time than he had previously, but he directed a larger amount of his own energy into the affected area as he had last time, in an attempt to counteract the attack. It took a moment, but in the end seemed to work, at least to a degree.

At the same time, he noticed that his opponent was once more charging up an attack. Presumably the same one as he'd used prior. Ignoring any protest from his leg Law once more began to circle his opponent at speed. It was a necessity at this point, as he had to stay out of reach of any more of those spheres, and now there was the threat of a beam attack as well. Analyzing the situation for a moment, he soon found his opening. As soon as the other unleashed his first attack he made his move. Law managed to avoid this first assault entirely, pushing himself more than he had in a while, although not quite reaching the level of speed he had just a moment ago due to the injury of his leg. As he did so he immediately charged his opponent once more. He knew they wouldn't be able to let out an attack of this level again for a few moments, so all he had to worry about was the orbs.

Pushing himself through the pain that continued to build in his leg, Law nimbly dodged the orbs still chasing him down, then once he'd managed to get past them made a b-line for his opponent. As he neared his mark he raised his weapon, flipped it so that the blade faced upwards, positioned his right hand further up the hilt and added his left to the grip, then he turned his right hand so that he was basically holding his sword backwards, and skidded to a turning stop. The effect being that, if his attack, a stab to the chest, were in fact to land he would be facing the opposite way from his opponent, and would immediately attempt to kick his enemy's leg out from under him, sending him to the ground and pinning him there with the blade. Were it to miss he would immediately be ready for the counter-attack that was sure to come, as he'd noticed that his opponent loved to utilize the combat roll, attempting to attack him from behind whilst he was unaware.
