THE BUTCHER'S SON

House Morikawa.

Wealthy family. Know how to pay tribute, a quality rarer by the day. A thumb dragged across the edge of Hitoshi's tongue, moving to flip the page of a small pamphlet. Public records of registry, notably the houses who kept ties with noble families.

Mostly tied to who, though? A frown creased his porcelain face, squinting as he scanned the dense information. Being public, none of it was of particular use. If he pushed, finding more private information would likely be possible. Can't push too hard on a gamble. Hitoshi's frown faded as he sighed, the pages folding closed as he leaned back into his chair. The tilting shadow of his parasol hid his eyes as he did, closing to ponder in thought.

"Suppose we could pay a visit." the rare vocal thought, to no one in particular. Seated outside the front of a Kurata owned business, people tended to avoid him with a fairly wide berth. Unless, of course, they needed something from him. In turn, his day had been rather uneventful so far. Standing slowly, the pamphlet found its way into his kimono, waving through a window to the shop keep.

"We will be gone for a few hours." half shouted, the keeper nodding in response.

Walking through the streets of the Rukongai, the sun would shift from midday to afternoon, deepening shadows guiding Hitoshi's way. As the clack of his geta transitioned from dirt to cobble, he approached the Morikawa residence, sterile gaze held evenly. A woman caught his eye, exiting the main building.

"Morikawa residence?" Hitoshi half stated, half questioned - all demanding.

Clad in a violet traditional woman's kimono, Morikawa Mizu realized just how uncomfortable she was visiting her familial home. It wasn't that she didn't love her family or the place she grew up but the Gotei had consumed her entire life as of late. With the 8th Division still in it's infancy and it's barracks yet uncompleted, she could hardly justify taking a leave during such an important time. Yet when her parents asked her to spend the day at their Rukongai estate to catch up and share her experiences with them, Mizu could not refuse. Honoring family was practically codified in Morikawa tradition. Thus she found herself kneeling on a thin cushion at a small traditional table in the house's main room.

The blonde Shinigami decided to go for a walk as her parents busied themselves attending to family matters of what she could only assume were of great enough import to draw their attention from their only daughter. Mizu stood and stepped softly toward the door, her naked feet warmed by the tatami flooring underneath. After slipping on a pair of lacquered sandals she slid her home's main entrance's door open, exited through, then closed it behind her.

The well-lit nature of her traditional estate meant she didn't have to suffer through momentary blindness as she entered the outside world. At least it is a beautiful day. the girl wistfully wondered to herself. At this time Mizu heard a question which sounded far more foreboding than it's content would imply. Turning, she noticed a tall white-haired man also dressed traditionally standing outside the Morikawa estate's gated entrance. Walking over, Mizu's innocent, but unwavering, golden gaze held on the stranger as she addressed him "Hai. This is indeed the Morikawa estate. May I help you, sir?"

THE BUTCHER'S SON

A calm green stare, as Hitoshi regarded the woman. At her approach, he'd sift back the tilt of his parasol, the shadow lurching forward to meet Mizu, underneath the guise of fidgeting. His gaze was steady as he took in her appearance, unmoving as he peeled away at her guise.

Not familiar. Young. Wonder how eager she is. Thought kept silent, he replied with a short bow.

"Not to presume," he lied, "are you a vassal or a member of the house?" Garnering the difference between servant and person was difficult when it came to noble houses, particularly as it watered down to those lesser. Appearances and mannerisms tended to be strict, and frankly -

There is no need for a servant's voice. Not for the current approach. Hitoshi bemused, considering the options at hand. Could play useful if things advance. Hard to argue against more voices in the right ears.

MORIKAWA MIZU

Mizu took in the appearance of this person. He didn't appear a member of the Gotei, with the lack of black Shihakusho, nor an average Rukongai resident given the quality of his clothing. Perhaps a noble? While he didn't speak particularly formally, Mizu was well aware some Nobles thought the gap between themselves and everyone else too capacious to bother with even the most basic honorifics. If he was a Noble he was likely here to speak to one or both of her parents, and as such Mizu resolved to treat the stranger respectfully as she could.

With a light bow Mizu acknowledged and answered the man's question "I am Mizu, daughter of the Morikawa clan, an 5th Seated Officer of the Gotei United. Are you here to speak to my parents, sir? I can fetch them, if it pleases you." She may not have lived a life of servitude, but her strict adherence to the Morikawa family's traditions of respect and honor belied her high-class upbringing.

THE BUTCHER'S SON

Ah. A daughter. The Gotei stench is still fresh, too. Fifth seat? Surprising for a shrimp. A mix of capricious thoughts as Hitoshi considered the next step. Advantageous. Especially if it coerces the father of the house. Even nobility tends to be doting morons with their daughters.

A short bow would lead before he spoke, another half step forward. "Apologies for the bluntness, Morikawa-san. I am the son of the Kurata, you may call me Hitoshi." Stiff in tone, he'd manage to convey some level of sincerity. Raising back to height, he'd continue as his gaze slipped from the woman, taking in more of the scenery.

"We merely wanted to speak. There is no need to bother your family." Trailing the edges of a doorframe, shimmering green slid back to Mizu - locking eyes. "We admit to not know much of your family. Only that you serve as retainer to another house, a most unfortunate circumstance, in our eyes."

Still as porcelain, the man would watch her closely for however she'd respond. Pieces falling into place with unspoken words and cruel thoughts.

MORIKAWA MIZU

Mizu thought hard about the name Kurata. What did she know of that family? It wasn't one of the Great Noble Houses, she knew that for sure. It wasn't the most well known name in Soul Society, though certainly more prestigious than her own family's. Meanwhile all she knew of Kurata was that it's a name most commonly spoken of in whispers. The Morikawa Clan, though, wasn't yet a true Noble house. It was one still building it's fame and wealth which is why it's estate was in Rukongai and not Seireitei.

Still, Mizu thought, she had a charmed upbringing regardless of whether her family were true nobility or not. Even as Hitoshi scanned the area around her Mizu's sharp golden gaze remained trained on his. Still unsure of the man even as he respectfully made clear his intentions, the blond haired Shinigami continued trying to get a read on him as she responded. "The Morikawa family is not truly retainer to any house. We are independent while fostering stronger relations with Nobles as it's what is best for everyone." she stated matter-of-factly.

THE BUTCHER'S SON

Not a complete moron. That is welcome. Hitoshi's opinion of those who fell in line with the Gotei was less than favorable. His own failings a sore memory shoved deep beneath hubris. Another step forward, his shadow shifting into the woman's.

"We see. A prudent act, if only others would follow." A hint of actual adulation, muted with the statue of a man's delivery. "If you find yourselves in no house's retain, the Kurata would be remiss to not extend our hand in comradery." Maintaining eye contact, the man reached into his kimono, a small sheet of paper tucked between pale fingers.

Fairly open, seemingly coherent. She should be useful after all. Extending his hand forward, he'd move to pass it to Mizu.

"Of course, we don't expect anything from an initial meeting. This is contact information, and some details of our initial proposal. You and your family should find that our goals align." Detailed on the paper was general information - address, telecommunication, the usual. Otherwise a by-the-numbers greeting, an offer following in no small means financially, in exchange for...

Well, they'd have to ask the Kurata to find out.
