○ Proud: As the appointed head of the Kurokaya family, Dan is a self-made woman who now wields her position like a weapon. Believing in her self-import, she acts in a matter most befitting a Seireitei noble and holds many traditional values. It is not her family's status that concerns her, though, as much as it is her own. A vain streak runs not far below the surface of her character and within lies a raging ego waiting to be fed. Her vanity is not entirely without justification, and she is certainly capable of living up to such expectations that her position might hold, but her self-confidence could easily be her downfall if left unchecked.

○ Bellicose: The first response that Dan has to a problem is to fight against it. There is seemingly no threat that she would not meet first with her fists, before assessing options later. She can be provocative, often drawing out her rivals into contests that they believe they have the advantage in and utilising her martial prowess to achieve her goals, but still saves much of this aggression for the battlefield. Her jingoistic tendencies saw her family heavily involved in the various wars that the Gotei has found itself in, and have not left her with a fondness for other races in the soul cycle.

○ Deceptively Perceptive: Despite her arrogant nature, Dan has a sharp mind and considers herself a masterful gauge of character. Her views are somewhat incendiary and divisive, even when expressed with an amount of cunning, so she greatly values the ability to read people and understand what makes them tick. In conversation, she might pick away at others to study their reactions, or sit back and let them reveal their hands unprompted. But, rarely, is she ever acting without an ulterior motive, be it scheming her way into a free drink or getting an edge in a debate.

○ Peerless Brawler: Ever since she first stepped foot in a dojo, Dan has never felt more comfortable than in a fight for martial dominance. In her youth, prior to joining the Academy, she had already become a talented fighter under the tutelage of several masters of the craft - a benefit afforded to her by her family’s wealth and status. There were few that could match her in her own age group, so she often sparred against professional fighters and even then proved a challenge for them. Her deft blade work combined with blistering speed made her an incredibly potent duelist.

In preparation for becoming a Shinigami, Dan’s martial training moved beyond wooden weaponry into true kenjutsu. She was taught several different schools of swordsmanship, each one with different styles and weaknesses. After several years of study, Dan came to create her own by merging several of these traditional schools together into what she arrogantly called the “Dan” school though more commonly came to be known as Dantou-ryuu (弾刀流, “Bullet Sword School”). Most unlike the nature of its founder, it is a subdued and precise art that avoids flashy moves and elegant flourishes in favour of delivering deadly strikes in the blink of an eye.
