I. The Host's Personality» Personality:
Naomi is hardly a person anymore. She is more along the lines of a very fine tool—one forged over many years of hard work from her surrogate mother. She never was a "blank slate," ready to be written to her master's wishes. No, Kurai merely nurtured what was
there into a shape she approved of. That is what makes Naomi's change so damaging to those that knew her.
Naomi is a decently happy person. Why wouldn't she be? She has a loving(?) mother, a decent home, and she's never alone. Although Urvasi can be quiet and a bit slow to respond, Naomi knows someone is
there. Kurai lets her have a decent bit of freedom too. She's free to leave and return when she pleases. Out of respect, Naomi still tells Kurai when she's leaving (and where she's probably going). This freedom to do what she wants is part of why Naomi is so happy. She's experienced so much—all thanks to her wonderful mother.
Unfortunately, Naomi is also exceptionally off-putting. She doesn't really stop
being happy. She doesn't understand mourning, grief, or the importance of death. She knows that killing someone in broad daylight causes jailtime—a minor inconvenience for her. She doesn't really understand why.
Kurai does it on a whim (and Naomi thinks
she understands her mother's mood swings), so why can't Naomi? She's given more leeway in Layer Zero, but that doesn't translate to the World of the Living. Every time she's had to take a life, she's more exasperated at the cleanup than the actual act.
Why does a life mean so little to Naomi? It's not as though she had seen enough death to desensitize her. No, she just watched the person she loved and respected the most go to any lengths to achieve her goals. With that kind of determination, why wouldn't Naomi learn to imitate that callous disposition? She wants to be able to be just like Kurai. Her kind of power would be beyond perfect to Naomi. She's proud of who she is, despite how negative it might be viewed by others. Kurai has been a good mother to her—at least in Naomi's eyes.
Naomi only has vague memories of her sister. She can't place Erika's face or name, but she can hear her voice perfectly fine. Even then, the memories feel wrong to her. They feel like something is just unnatural about them—as if they've been fabricated. She knows she would probably care for her sister, but unfortunately there is animosity there. They didn't stick together. Naomi blames Erika partly for her horrid familial experiences. » Likes:

I. The Host's History» History:
Naomi doesn't clearly remember much about her childhood or her time alive. Instead, a lot of faces are blurs and voices are heavily distorted. Names are also either hit or miss. She knows her sister's name was about as long as her own and that she was not raised by her father, but by her mother and grandfather. Naomi believes that she blocked most of these memories out when she experienced the lack of family. Her coping mechanism was to refuse the reality where she had experienced this kind of happiness.
Naomi's life alive was not as strife-filled as her sister's. She had no interest in becoming a warrior like her grandfather. She trained with the naginata and other, more "feminine" weapons. That was only to defend herself if it came down to that. Otherwise, she wanted to study. She was more of a scholar than a fighter. She read and wrote her own philosophical treatsies. None ever were published or distributed in any wide manner. When fire consumed her and her family's home, many of her unread and unfinished works were lost. Naomi was mostly solitary, wanting quiet and a distraction-free environment. And yet, a lot of her works were on how much family and the love they bring was indispensible to a healthy life.
Naomi was in a deep sleep when the fire took her. Well, the fire itself didn't kill her. She was crushed by a falling support beam. It was, thankfully, a quick death. The first thing Naomi remembers clearly is the brightness of the Soul Society. It had been threatening rain for days before she died, so the sudden brightness almost hurt her eyes. She searched and asked around, looking for her sister, mother, or grandfather. No one had seen anything. That started the beginning of Naomi's loneliness.
Naomi searched for about ten years before finally giving up the active search. The older adults laughed at and pitied her. She was chasing the ideal situation only a very lucky few had been able to achieve. Reuniting after death was basically impossible. She was seen as immature and someone who wouldn't accept the reality. Younger adults saw her as too insecure and holding no authority. She was out of every group and no one woudl take her in. She would bounce between groups of close friends before they'd pack up and leave her without a word.
Naomi ventured deeper into the Rukongai. She started at District 45. By the time she found a "home," she had made it to District 58. She had made it to an area known for having numerous backrooms. Whether it was a gambling hall, a brothel, or even an actual miniature circus, most people didn't know what any specific back room entailed. Naomi had found a library owned by a married couple. They didn't quite take her in, but they took care of her. She did her jobs well and was paid little. The trade-off was that Naomi was given room and board as well on the second floor of this odd establishment.
It took fifty additional years before Naomi was instructed about what the back room of this place entailed. It was a brothel, but a very odd one. The "employees" were kept in a seperate building. Orders would be placed with books and bookmarks. They'd go upstairs to a private reading room, and soon their order would come in, disguised as a normal customer. They'd take the book and go up to the reading room. Naomi, due to her almost nonchalant demeanor about the whole thing, wasn't just forced into the role like her "family" wanted initially. She became an exclusive "employee," while also being the "handler" of the employees and customers. She'd help them with personal problems while also making sure they were "fit for duty."
Naomi was one of those requests that only came from someone important. Due to her status, she was one her "family" didn't want to have broken. Unless Naomi specifically gave consent to it otherwise, the gentlemen in her life were required to use protection. It is one of the reasons Naomi has a more reserved outlook on sex, surprisingly. She was practically forced into it, but it was never to the point where it endangered her or her inner workings. So, she does still have some respect for it—specifically for the unprotected parts. Naomi was the only employee allowed to physically stop a customer if she deemed it necessary.
When Naomi's family went through financial trouble, they were bought out by a larger group. Before the sale went through, her family let Naomi go. She would be treated worse by the new bosses. They didn't expect her to leave though. They thought she was broken. She wasn't, not in the way they thought at least. Naomi had heard the stories of every employee there. She knew how many had a family who sold them into that depravity and how many were just abandoned by them. She knew how horrible family could be now, and yet she still thought she craved it.
Sometime around the year 2100, Naomi was found by an older couple looking for a replacement for their daughter. She had died in battle against Hollows. Naomi was about the same age and decided to take them up.
Kurai showed her familial love, which she had forgotten.
I. Host's Racial Techniques/Abilities/Skills» Racial Abilities: Jigoku no Mon (地獄の門; Gate of Hell:
This is an ability "bestowed" upon her by Kurai. It's a rather simple ability that lets her travel to and from Layer Zero at will. She is able to open a small "tear" in the world not unlike a Garganta. The difference is that this "tear" doesn't work for anyone but Naomi (and Urvasi too, but they're effectively inseperable at this point). Once Naomi steps through, it seals itself shut.
