The Second Division's
I. Olivia Flynn » Age:
87, Appears 23 » Gender:
Female » Association:
Gotei United - Second Division (Healing Corps, Official), Third Division (Unofficial)
Olivia is a kind-hearted, optimistic soul with many introverted tendencies. One hardly need wonder why she would put her skills to use as a healer over anything else, as more than any sense of right or wrong or duty, she is genuinely happy to see someone healthy and thriving because of her work. It is almost enough to see the smiling face of a patient after treatment, though payment is always appreciated.
She prefers to see the good in people before the bad, and believes that all are fundamentally capable of change. Even the worst of society may do so with only a push in the right direction, gentle or not. This worldview has only been reinforced since becoming a shinigami, as that is exactly how she sees the purification of a hollow: as a push towards self-betterment.
She is not, however, naive, but rather tends to go with the flow of a situation if she believes that it would do the most good. She recognizes when she's being taken advantage of, and is quick to forgive most wrongdoings done to herself in the pursuit of helping the transgressor.
However, she is hardly a pacifist, as is the stereotype. In fact, she quite enjoys physical activity, and took up kickboxing as a means of burning energy and relieving the stress that builds when working in the medical ward. Although, she is known to provide thorough healing for anyone afterwards.
That said, she is much better with machines than she is with other people, usually. Unlike people, who lie, cheat and steal if it at all benefits them, machines will only do the task they have been asked to do, and are generally incapable of more. Furthermore, she is lacking in certain social skills, and has a habit of invading others' personal space without realizing that she's done so, particularly when excited.
She understands how easy it is for misconceptions to spread, and that several about herself do exist. Her behavior and attitude invokes a sense of innocence that, quite frankly, doesn't exist in reality. She's been known to drink and gamble in her off time, to join her fellows in evenings of debauchery, and even to take part in the odd drunken brawl with another shinigami purely for the hell of it.
Above all else, Olivia enjoys building and tinkering. When she is stressed out, nothing calms her nerves quite as well as sitting down with broken parts and making something new from them, no matter how banal. It's quite often that she can be found in the labs of third division, sifting through their discarded projects until inspiration strikes.
Conversely, she cannot tolerate to see cruelty done to others. Especially from her fellow shinigami, open sadism and malice towards the well being of others are just about the only way to make her truly lose her temper with another's behavior. She holds herself and the Gotei as a whole to a higher standard than the enemies that they fight.
On a much smaller scale, her likes and dislikes can vary. As an introvert, she prefers smaller, more intimate settings to grander venues. She adores the taste of chocolate, and detests sour flavors. She is naturally an early riser, though has trouble sleeping and has hence fallen into the habit of meditating to quiet the mind before bed. Her quick thinking nature tends to lead to moments of impatience around particularly slower individuals.
Born in the year 2,332 to two former shinigami, Olivia was set on a path of relative ease and comfort from her very first day. She hardly struggled just to live day to day, and as she grew, it became clear that she would find a place among the Gotei eventually. The girl was strong, like her parents, and so, was taught from an early age what that would mean.
During her formative years, Olivia came to a passion for tinkering, and began to help out where she could with a family friend's shop. There, she learned how to diagnose and repair things of all sorts, but mostly the prosthetic limbs of the neighboring souls. Shortly before her entry into the Shin'ō Academy, she had taught herself to repair the older computers lying around, and made a name for fixing near anything that was brought to her.
The occasion of her admission to the Shin'ō Academy was neither joyous nor somber, but somewhere in the middle. Like a child leaving for college, she understood and sought to better herself, yet still pained to leave her family and friends behind.
During her stay in the academy, she learned just how different life was about to become for her. The lessons were harsh, and students were often paired up to fight one another to demonstrate just how one was doing something wrong. Olivia was often chosen in these moments, for her near inability to so much as swing a sword straight. Her instructors often remarked on how she rushed through her stances impatiently.
However, it was in the practicing of Kidō that she shined brightly. Unlike the other students who found melee combat or flash step to their liking, she was blessed with a talent for the magical arts. Weaving spells was almost second nature to her, even if she often tripped over the incantations during the process, and so, the girl was transferred from her general lessons to something far more specialized.
Due greatly to mounting tensions between the Gotei and its enemies, circumstance would have Olivia placed on the fast track to graduating into the ranks of the second division's Kido Corps; specifcally, the healing division. Her talent for magic was put to extensive use here, and during what free time she'd had available, she delved more deeply into her passions. The Gotei's more complete knowledge of computers and cybernetics, in particular, were of great interest to the new recruit.
Though her prowess with healing magic far from made her stand out among the others of the second division, Olivia once more began to build a reputation for her handiness and reliability where mechanics were involved. As the years passed and became decades, she almost swore it were like a voice in her head were telling her exactly where the problem lie. Solder this, or replace that. Tighten here. She could practically diagnose a problem at a glance, on some days.
During one of her nightly meditation sessions, Olivia broke ground and was accepted into her inner world for the first time. Expecting to find her zanpakutō spirit waiting for her, she was, however, surprised to find nothing but rubble in a dirty old shop. At its center, a vaguely humanoid figure sat carved from steel. Confused and curious, she did what came naturally, and over time, made it her job to restore the dilapidated golem to working condition.
The longer she spent in her inner world, the more she noticed the dusty shop come to life around her, and in the outside world, her abilities grew in kind. What had begun as an otherworldly sense for diagnosing computers would become almost a bond, as they reacted to her very thought without other input.
So, having carved out a niche for herself in the Gotei, Olivia was paid well. Well enough, in fact, that she was more than able to send money back home, and when she did visit from time to time, conducted free repairs and healing for friends new and old. Though she had yet to so much as purify a single Hollow, she had found her place in the great machine.
She was content.
IV. Natural Abilities» Hacking:
As a result of her creativity and detailed knowledge of computer coding, Olivia can write and rewrite code quickly and on the fly. With her zanpakutō's abilities, this makes her a skilled and proficient hacker.» Hakuda, Kickboxing:
Olivia employs kickboxing in her style of Hakuda.» Mechanical Knowledge:
Tinkering with and repairing cybernetic parts are a passion of Olivia's. It was due to this and her innate talent for magic that she was ultimately placed in the Healing Division.» Kidō:
Olivia possesses a talent for the magical arts, and as such, weaving spells comes more easily to her than swinging a sword.
V. Racial AbilitiesZanpakutō» Data Conversion:
Over time, Olivia's practice with her powers of technomancy has given rise to a skill for converting digital information to neurological signals within her own brain. As such, she can interact with electronic devices without the use for a conventional interface, such as a screen or speaker.
VI. Asimov » Zanpakutô Spirit Appearance:
Asimov appears as a great golem constructed of steel plating, left abandoned to rust and decay over the ages. » Inner World:
Olivia's inner world is a large garage strewn with tools, equipment and spare parts. Machinery of all kinds line the walls, leading back to a dead forge set into the far wall. At the center of this room, Asimov sits on the floor in a state of disrepair. » Zanpakutô Appearance:
Asimov takes the form of a katana with a green cloth wrapped around its hilt and a guard lined with small, thin prongs at random intervals. Across the entire length of the weapon, a decoration of copper-colored lines invokes the appearance of a motherboard. » Sealed Zanpakutô Power:
In its sealed form, Asimov acts as an antenna that grants Olivia limited abilities of technomancy. By thought alone, she may operate computers within her line of sight, though only within their regular capacity to be used; e.g. a part without the means to move on its own cannot be made to do so.
» Shikai Release Phrase: Execute Command
» Shikai Release Action: Olivia draws or holds her zanpakutō aloft.
» Shikai Appearance: Asimov's blade breaks apart into a nigh invisible cloud of particulate nanomachines, each the size of a speck of dust. These machines are comprised of a steel shell wrapped around more sensitive inner components, and are driven by Olivia's intent through connection to her very soul.
» Shikai Abilities: Asimov's nanomachines rearrange matter quickly, efficiently and to the most minute detail. Under Olivia's direction, they may function to break down matter, reconstruct it or even carry out repairs of mechanical and biological components.
Due to the sensitivity of Asimov's nanomachines, forced use of any ability on an unwilling, spiritually empowered being might result in damage to the shikai. Whether constructing or deconstructing matter, the nanomachines work at a rate of one cubic foot of matter per post.
» Deconstruct.exe: Olivia directs Asimov to clear away an object. The nanomachines break down the unwanted item from within, unbinding its molecules and converting its matter harmlessly into gas or reishi. This deconstruction can break down items as hard as steel, or as diamond at tier 1-5, or with preturnatural hardness at tier 1-1. This abiltiy cannot break down items reinforced by spiritual energy, such as a zanpakutō.
» Reconstruct.exe: Olivia directs Asimov to create an object. Using airborne reishi and particulate matter, the nanomachines swiftly construct her desired item. An item's level of complexity has no effect on the rate of construction, though Olivia must possess detailed knowledge of a structure before it can be made. Such items have a maximum hardness equivalent to steel, or with a thorough understanding of her shikai and a tier of 1-5, to diamond. At tier 1-1, this maximum hardness rises again to preternatural levels.
» Repair.exe: Olivia directs Asimov to repair damage that has been done to an object, whether material or spiritual in nature, living or inert. She must have knowledge of what the object looked like and its function before the damage took place; otherwise, her best guess might result in further loss of structural integrity. In the case of a living organism, a botched repair might result in death. The rate at which this ability can repair damaged tissue without causing further injury is equivalent to a Hollow's Regeneration: Beginner at tier 3-1, Adept at 2-5, Advanced at 2-2, Elite at 1-5, Master at 1-3, and Grandmaster at 0-5.

X. Equipment» Diary:
A small computer capable of carrying out basic functions that is, for all intents and purposes, Olivia's notebook and diary. There is no obvious means of user interface with the device, and it is small enough to easily fit in the palm of her hand.» Medical Kit:
As a member of the Healing Corps, Olivia is hardly seen without a small first aid kit when in uniform.» Repair Kit:
Like her medical supplies, Olivia is never without a small bag of simple tools with which to conduct quick repairs.
