I. Basic Information

» Name: Steiner Halford
» Titles: N/A
» Age: 23
» Gender: Male

» Affiliation/Rank: Rogue

» Physical Appearance Description: There isn't very much that could be said for the only child of the Halford family. Not standing out very much in his shabby, non-designer clothing that gives off a sort of working class hero vibe. He gives off the sort of presence of a guy who works a nine to five and then heads home after his long shift to sit around and watch television. Still, standing a bit taller than the average human male, and being of a solid build that has been honed through hard work by doing odds and end jobs, Steiner does have a bit of meat on his bones, and a bit of wiggle room to put on more. His skin is mostly unblemished, save for his hands which are calloused from physical labor, and a few light scars from a few repair accidents around his family's shop.

Sanitation and cleanliness always seem to come second when it comes to Steiner, who usually can be found with some kind of grease, oil, or some kind of dirt smudges on his person or even on his attire. He, however, does not reek as he does believe in keeping himself a "bit" clean as to make sure not to drive off potential customers at his families shop. This "bit" of cleanliness does not lend itself to his pitch black hair, which is almost always disheveled, and almost seemingly appears to look like he has just woken up with little to no care being given to what it looks like. However, his equipment is kept in impeccable shape, as a craftsman's tools are extremely important. This includes a pair of advanced goggles that he wears on his head at almost all times.

I. Personality Traits

» Personality:

Hard Work, Makes the Dream Work: From an early age, a drive to succeed, and a vision of what he wanted to accomplish has been something that has pushed Steiner to work toward his goals. This persistence has rewarded him greatly and influenced his overall life in ways that have left a lasting impact on the young man's life so much so that the mantra of "Hard Work, Makes the Dream Work", has almost been engraved into his very soul. Anything, in Steiner's eyes at least, is obtainable just as long as one pushes themselves to the utmost level to obtain it. Slacking off and giving up are not choices for those that have the drive to reach their dreams and the loftier those dreams are then clearly the harder the work will need to be put in to succeed. This vision of the world through the eyes of his own personal ambitions deems those who do not want to try or those who want to put in the bare minimum of effort as beings who are not worth his time or effort to interact with. In his eyes those who can not even put in the time to better themselves are not worth the time he would be wasting not bettering himself.

Lack of Social Grace: Having spent his life devoting himself to the aspect of improving his craft and looking to become one of the greatest craftsman the world has ever known has left little time to develop his social skills. Their is a level of ineptness to be seen when watching Steiner try to exist outside of his own personal element. It isn't that he doesn't try to connect with other people or dislikes interacting with people outside of his comfort zone, but when it comes to talking with people outside of the newest tech, designs, or tools he tends to flounder. This lack of social grace extends far beyond conversations however, as it also effects his basic common sense when it comes to discerning a lie from a truth. This tends to lead Steiner to making false judges in character and sometimes causes him to "jump the gun" in terms of making decisions on whether a person is worth associating with.

Honest Man: Steiner is a strong believer in being honest and attempts his best to make sure to not tell someone something unless if he is absolutely sure he is sharing accurate or truthful information. This plays a major part in his work as a repair man, as being honest about the prices of materials, and the costs of labor is an easier sell than lying to get extra money. More honesty equals more repeat customers. More over, Steiner just objectively has issues with lying. He doesn't like people who swindle others and he doesn't like people who put up facades to try to win over someone or gain something. To Steiner, honesty is an extremely important part of business, but also it is a necessary part of every day life that is needed to insure proper relationships within the community at large.

I. Character History

» History

Born to a struggling repair shop owner and a young nurse, Steiner Halford would grow up in a strong, and responsible environment. With two parents that loved each other greatly and with both of them having strong personal investment in their career paths, Steiner learned the value of hard work, and dedication to the pursuit of self-improvement. It was during the early years of his life that Steiner would watch, with awe, his father build, repair, and tinker with multiple technological devices. To Steiner, his father was like a superhero, and even while the struggle to make ends meet was all too real, his father would pull out a miracle, and make them meet somehow. By the time Steiner had turned seven, he had already began to follow in his father's foot steps, studying in an almost apprentice-like manner on how to work with different tools, and how to repair simple machines. His father loved the fact that Steiner was so invested in to learning something that he enjoyed and would spend hours talking shop with his son, some times to his mother's dismay as food on the table seemed to grow cold on certain nights. Still, the Halford family had a wonderful dynamic, and the three of them lived, albeit tight on funds, with stability.

Then the nightmares started.

A red haired warrior standing against monsters would haunt the young Halford's dreams, causing him to awake screaming in horror, and shock at what he was seeing. Memories that were not his own seemed to surface occasionally, he began to hallucinate, and at times would lose almost all sense of his self. It was horrifying for the Halford family to watch their son struggle with some kind of unseen demon that lurked on the edges of his mind and his father didn't second guess himself when taking on large projects to help fund the psychiatric help Steiner needed or his mother working double shifts to bring in precious coin to help their child. This caused Steiner to distance himself from other kids at school and moreover his own parents, gone were the days when father and son would stay up into the wee hours of the night talking of tools and parts, and instead those were replaced by a tension that they couldn't seem to remedy. This continued on for years and only caused a great divide between him and the other kids at his school who began to label him a freak after a particularly vivid episode occurred on the playground at recess. He continued to retract into himself and the psychiatrists worried for him almost as much as his parents who watched as their once vibrant and lovely family began to tear apart.

Finally, as Steiner turned thirteen it seemed to finally end. The proper medications and the intense efforts of therapy that he had to go through finally seemed to fix Steiner's mind in just enough of a way to help him cope with all of the things that were haunting him. But the price tag for those fixes had left the family with barely any money and with the cost of living only going up, Steiner's father contemplated selling his shop. Steiner, however would be the one to strongly object to selling the family business, and would instead of backing down from the challenge presented would take up the banner of responsibility. After school, on weekends, and over vacation, Steiner would work for his father for no cost to himself to double the workload that their little repair shop could handle. His father and mother would watch with pride as their son dismantled faulty equipment, repaired old washing machines, and worked on whatever he could to help pay the bills around the house. He took this job seriously, but more over he took it as a warmup for what he intended to do in his future. He wanted to be an inventor.

During this time, Steiner learned a great deal about every modern tool, and every modern form of technology available. When he wasn't busy at work or studying for school, Steiner would be nose deep into a book on subject matters that revolved around the world of crafting with different types materials, tools, and methods. He began to tinker with things, making weird gadgets that had no value, but held some purpose in expanding his knowledge on what worked and didn't. It was around the time that Steiner turned sixteen that his powers manifested. He was thinking of buying some screws from a nearby store when all of a sudden the air before him began to twist and turn, trace metals in the air coming together to form the object of his desire: a single screw. Exhausted, confused, and excited he presented his crafted screw to his father who stood their awe struck that his son had powers of some kind. At first this power seemed to be unpredictable and seemed to activate on a whim, but Steiner quickly learned how to manifest it at will. He decided that with his new power, much like he had with his studies, he was going to fling himself fully at it, and learn all he could about it.

So began a long and arduous process of trial and error to learn how to expand upon the limits of what he could create and how many of that item he could manifest. Over time he began to understand that he could only create things he understood at a functional level, he couldn't just make a plane, or an automobile, he had to understand the thing he was trying to create entirely. This caused him to dig deeper into books, learning about chemical reactions, and how things worked beyond just the simple devices that he had been used to creating. Soon, he was not just making screws, nails, and bolts, but making things like pocket knives, eating utensils, and flashlights. As he did this, making things by using his power became less exhausting, and less taxing on him as if the more he used it the more his body adjusted to the strain of making things. It was as if Steiner was training a set of muscles in particular, at least that is what he had theorized was the cause for such things, and so he continued to hone in on increasing not just the breadth of things he could make, but also the amount of those things he could make in a sitting.

Business began to boom as Steiner improved, his father no longer having to buy new tools, and parts as Steiner would make them with power and cut costs drastically. This meant the family had to work less and could enjoy themselves more, something that the Halford family was greatly appreciative of. Over time, Steiner began to expand on the list of things he could make, and the amount of things he could create until finally he decided to try something different. It was on a whim on his twenty first birthday that Steiner decided to try to make something wondrous. Locking himself in his room, he sat down, and decided to focus on creating something truly impressive. After a few hours, Steiner stepped out of his room, and showed his confused father a pocket knife that he had created. At first his father joked about how Steiner had made things like this before, but then Steiner asked his father to attempt to break the little knife. Surprised, his father would take a hammer to it, only for the hammer to have no effect on it, confused, his father would try to snap it with pliers, but the knife would not budge.

Steiner admitted that it had taken him some time, but he had learned how to connect the items he was crafting to his own reserves of energy, and that as long as he had set a parameter for what he wanted the particular item to do it would follow through with it for as long as Steiner had the energy to make it happen. He had made the pocket knife indestructible and after breaking the connection with the item the knife simply turned to rusted dust, as if the process of taking the energy back had destroyed the item entirely. For the next two years, Steiner focused solely on developing his ability to create such "wondrous" items while focusing on improving his energy reserves so that he could functionally utilize this ability at higher levels because while making an indestructible pocket knife was fine, and dandy, he wanted to make more impressive things. During this time, Steiner began to craft more complex things than just parts, and helped his father's business improve for the first time.

What at first had simply been a passion job for his father had evolved into a job that was actually pulling in decent money so that the Halford family could live happily. Still, Steiner dreamed big, and hoped that one day he would be able to join some mega corporation or create his own company to create inventions to hand over to the people.

I. Equipment

» Equipment:

High Spec Digital Scanning Goggles: Originally the goggles on Steiner's head were designed as a very basic pair of goggles that were used to protect the eyes, but over time Steiner has improved upon the goggles concept and usage. While still good for protecting the eyes, digital screens were added in the place of lenses, and these digital screens have several functions: scanning, analyzing, basic GPS, and even an advanced prototype energy scanning function. The scanning function acts as a basic "find waldo" type of application, being able to find tools that have been misplaced, identifying racial aspects of nearby humanoids, and helping discern proper tools necessary for repairs. The Analyze functions allows for chemical analysis of minerals, integrity reporting to insure all tools and machines are one hundred percent functional, and even proximity temperature and toxicity reports to better insure safety in the work place. Finally the prototype energy scanner was originally designed to see if parts and machinery were receiving proper energy output from their sources, but over time Steiner expanded on the functions capabilities. This expansion allows for the goggles to functionally improve on the energy sensing capabilities of the wearer, allowing for visual recognition of energy signatures from up to ten feet away. While still in the early alpha testing stage of this particular function, this can prove quite useful in identifying energy leaks in machines, or even hostiles trying to hide nearby.

Finely Honed Tools: No inventor is complete without his hand tools and Steiner is no exception. Having a wide array of different tools and even some parts in a compartment in his coat, Steiner at any given time can be ready to repair anything that he come upon, or when inspiration strikes work in the field on a design that suits his needs.

I. Natural Abilities & Skills

» Skills:

Encyclopedic Knowledge of Tools, Parts, and Machinery: Having spent most of his youth under the tutelage of his father and by reading a wide array of different books on the subject matter, Steiner has a great deal of knowledge on anything to do with machines. This form of knowledge is highly necessary as without this knowledge his ability to craft and create things would be greatly hindered, as his ability requires that he knows how each part works within a machine to be able to create that machine.

Excellent Energy Reserves and Control: Through constant usage and his own personal training methods, Steiner has a pretty vast well of energy to draw upon to utilize his own abilities. While more than likely not as strong as someone with a plethora of combat experience, Steiner still has a great connection in terms of how to use his own energies, and just how much energy will be necessary to make his goals a reality. After all, in the world of crafting and creation, if a part is not correctly made, the whole machine could be faulty as such their is a level of precision needed to make those parts and fit them into place. This level of control was obtained through trial and error, until the point that it could be done subconsciously, and without much thought or effort put into it.

Above Average Strength: Back before Steiner's powers were totally understood or to an extent controllable, Steiner had to work mostly with his hands. Due to this, Steiner would at times have to lift heavy objects at the store for delivery purposes, repair purposes, or even just simply to examine and find the issues with the machine he was working on. Over time, this constant use of his muscles gave him strength that, while not of herculean levels, was still enough to get the job done to fit his needs. Even after Steiner's powers were under his control to an acceptable level, Steiner still continued to physically workout to keep up his strength, and also continue to do as he once did before he understood his powers enough. This is mostly due to him enjoying taking things apart and working on things with his own two hands, but also because he values the workout he gains from it.

I. Other Supernatural Abilities

» Powers:

Machine Paradise: Creation.exe: By utilizing his own spiritual energy Steiner can draw out trace minerals from the air, the ground, or even other human based constructs to create whatever his heart desires. This power is limited by his own knowledge of the methods of construction, the knowledge of how said construct works, and the necessary energy type to power said machine. The speed of construction can vary depending on several conditions: the abundance of materials, the focus that Steiner can dedicate toward crafting the machine, and the amount of spiritual energy available for Steiner to use. If all three conditions are above standard, Steiner can almost instantaneously craft what he needs, but if said conditions are not met it can take a considerable amount of time to create the machine that Steiner has chosen to make. Furthermore the quality of the machine that Steiner crafts using this power is considered to be of "masterwork" class, not only due to it being made by this ability, but due to Steiner's knowledge of how the machine operates at a micro and macro level.

By extension the quality of the item can be further increased beyond "masterwork" class into 'wondrous" or even "legendary" class by granting a boon to the specific item that is being crafted. For a boon to be imbued on to an item, Steiner must apply special properties to the item, this can be as simple as connecting his own spiritual energy to the item for personal use, adding special components to change the function of the item, or by connecting outside power sources beyond his own to the item to increase output. An example would be Steiner creating a flashlight, at base level this is a very simple item that would not be of much use outside of illuminating dark areas, but with Steiner's method of creation by adding his own spiritual energy as a power source for the item it can change in functionality becoming more akin to a lightsaber by changing a few key components in the design, and using his own energy as a catalyst as opposed to using batteries. Another example would be creating an energy canon of sorts, while normally limited by his own spiritual energy reserves, Steiner could theoretically create components, and adjust certain aspects of the canon to allow it to tap into outside energy sources by physical connection thus amping up the destructive force of said cannon as long as it was attached to a secondary power source.

Furthermore, Steiner can upgrade or change items that he has an understanding of. This can be as simple as making longer lasting batteries or making stronger materials for the items he is upgrading, but he can also change aspects of the items he is using with this power. This means that Steiner can "adjust" the tech he is making to match the threats he is encountering instantaneously by adding or subtracting components or by changing the concept of his machine through upgrading it on the fly. Much like with creating items, the speed at which this method can adjust components is based on the same principals as before. The destructive force of the machines being crafted scales with the power control skill and the items quality scales with mediumship.

» Pure Abilities:

Energy Mimicry (Machine): Sometimes there is a lack of necessary energy sources available to power a machine, in the case of Steiner Halford, he can manipulate his own spiritual energy to mimic the effects of certain energy sources to power machines. Electrical, hydro, wind, thermal, combustion, and even chemical energy mimicry are all possible via this particular ability. However, this mimicry only works when in tandem of powering a machine, Steiner can not just make explosions or lightning bolts, he has to be powering a machine. Furthermore, this ability has a one to one ratio in terms of energy conversion, which means that if Steiner is tapped out of spiritual energy, he can't just simply keep powering a machine, and instead would need to recharge himself. Steiner can only mimic the effects of an energy if he understands how that energy works within confines of powering that particular machine. For instance if Steiner didn't know how a battery worked when powering a flashlight, he could not use this ability to mimic the chemical reaction of the battery inside of the flashlight, and it would basically be useless. This ability scales with the power control skill.

Technomancy: Steiner's ability to create machines, items, and other constructs is all at a base level an advanced form of technomancy, but Steiner's powers extend beyond just the basis of creation. Steiner can, within one hundred feet of himself, draw human made constructs to him, or away from him by utilizing his spiritual energy. For instance, Steiner can bring power lines down to him to insert into items of his creation to power them, or send power lines at his opponent to wrap them up, and electrocute them. The limit to this ability is based on Steiner's own energy reserves and also scales with mediumship.

Elemental Resistances: While toying around with different forms of energy to power his machines, Steiner has gained slight resistances to heat and electrical types of energy. This is due to their being many (and many) failed experiments that Steiner has conducted over the years to obtain what he would consider "perfected" designs. These failed experiments usually lent themselves to Steiner getting a trip to the hospital, but continued exposure granted adequate resistances to those particular forms of energy. This ability scales with Spiritual Adaption.

Machine Paradise: Creation.exe

This first bit is more just a bit of clarification, but when you say "the item's quality scales with mediumship," I assume that means the crafted machine itself is on par with an item he was utilizing his mediumship on?

Second, there's a few ways to go about this. As it stands, this is a pretty versatile power that lets Steiner make a lot of things, which is fine, but I wasn't sure the degree to which these machines would have individual abilities and the like. Would they be unique enough in their function to merit being treated as separate equipment, or are they mechanically mostly indistinct and just ways of utilizing his attacks?[/adm]

To answer the first question, the answer is yes. I'm using Mediumship in a way to kind of scale the durability of the items, I felt that splitting this from Power Control would make things a bit more interesting than throwing them under one hat and allow me to branch out more skill wise in terms of growing the character.

Secondly, I believe that most of the stuff would be mundane to help him fire off attacks, and that eventually (with staff's approval of course), more advanced equipment could be made for Steiner and people he is aligned with. At least that is the way I see it eventually going down the line.
