THE SHINIGAMI APPLICATION

I. Basic Information

» Name: Alister Brand (Real Name: Ryoto Kazura)
» Alias: Lucky S.O.B.
» Age: 700 (Appears to be in his mid-twenties)
» Gender: Male

» Association: Formerly of the Gotei, now a self-employed businessman.

» Appearance Written:
Alister on most given days chooses to wear the most expensive silks that money can buy, adorning himself in free flowing clothing, and not in stuffy business suits like most of his clientele. These clothes are comfortable, but also functional in that if things do get dicey he does have the necessary flexibility in his attire to enter into combat. His Zanpakutō is usually strapped to his right hip or carried in its scabbard in his hands on days that he chooses to forgo a belt. On his head, atop his messy, but well kept red hair is usually a hat of some kind. Fashionable Italian shoes and designer boots usually are placed over expensive silk socks on his feet. Needless to say Alister prides himself on keeping an appearance of wealth and standing where ever he tends to be at any time.

Outside of the superficial clothing appearance wise, Alister is a model of health, and cleanliness. A lot is put into maintaining an air of business casual for him, ranging from his suits to his disheveled silver hair. Physically speaking Alister is slightly above average in terms of male height and weighs a bit over what one would consider average. Underneath the fine silks is a body that has been forged through tireless workout regiments, dieting, and proper wellness programs. To Alister, his body is a temple, and while he may indulge in fine spirits on occasion and gourmet dinners to suit his fancy, he always works it off, and always strives for physical improvement. His pale skin remains blemish free, but his hands are extremely calloused from some sort of training from a long time ago.

I. Personality

» Personality:

A lot of people who views things on a skin deep level would see Alister's basic traits very easily. Over-confident, too much swagger, a too cool for school sort of aura, and a bit of an issue with authority and all the trappings of authority. But in reality Alister is much deeper than that and all of these basic traits that are quite visible on the outside are merely pantomime to hide the person within from the outside world. Alister mimics the traits of the rich and wealthy who always looks down on others while sympathizing with those who have nothing of their own to showcase. Its why on the down low, those who know Alister well enough will know that he employs the destitute and the desperate while constantly enriching the neighborhoods that his establishments are located in through charity work and donations. This is all of course hidden behind the bravado and the dismissive actions of his own person, but in reality he simply wants to do good, a good that he never had growing up.

A rough childhood in the rukongai with nothing, but the clothes on his back helped him achieve a desire to be wealthy, and a drive to be much greater than the sum of his parts. Now that he has those things, his desire for greatness, while still present without a doubt, has shifted in priorities to making those around him experience the joy of success. Everyone should have the tools to succeed no matter what and now that his wealth is there to back him up, he uses that wealth without reserve to try, and give the down trodden a chance to rise up much like he did. Does that mean that Alister doesn't enjoy the fancy things in life or chooses to not spoil himself? Hell no, Alsiter indulges whenever he can, and as often as he can, but the realization of what he has achieved through hard work, and the tools that were presented to him is still something that motivates him to want to help others achieve similar heights.

Even without the desire to help others, the drive of Alister Brand is something to behold. A child who had nothing and was treated like a smudge on a perfectly clean window for most of his life to have ascended so far would have taken an incomparable amount of willpower and motivation. Alister trained for years to be physically strong enough to survive and to overcome the obstacles placed in front of him by those that would rather keep him low. When society kicked him in the groin and spat in his face, Alister instead stood back up, smiled, and tried his best to improve to push forward. Always forward. Alister's appearance of a lazy and dismissive individual being nothing more than a persona to appeal to the rich and easily beguiled hides the constantly working and constantly striving for as close to perfection as he can achieve true persona underneath. The real Alister wakes up earlier than most and stays up later than most, always working on something or another to make up for his shortcomings or to improve on the already established foundations that have been crafted through years of work and study.

It is those that he hides himself from that he despises the most. Hating nobility, hating people who have more than their fair share, and those that simply look the other way when faced with the plight of the common man. These people are lower than filth to him, but to dupe them, and to fool them he plays nice. Hell, he plays so nice that at times sometimes he disgusts himself with how much ass kissing, and how much shit he has to spew to get them to give him their money or business. Yet he reminds himself every time he feels like that, that the end goal has to justify the means, and that he is doing it so that others can run while he had been forced to walk.

» Likes: Hard work, those who strive for success, driven people, nobility who help the downtrodden, and the finer things in life.
» Dislikes: Sleazy rich people, lazy people, people who have given up on themselves, nobility who treat people as objects, and those who abuse their position of power.
I. History

» History: For most of Ryoto's life he was alone. Born to a nobody mom who died in childbirth and to a deadbeat dad who straight up abandoned him when he was at the age of five years old, his life should have been defined as just another lost soul in the Rukongai. Just another person to be squashed under the boot of a system that just didn't work for people who had nothing or nobody to help them keep their head above water. But Ryoto was different, different in that he had the drive to be much more than what he had been given, and that he was more than willing to do anything he could to rise up. Most of his early years were spent running the streets, stealing a bit of food there, and living in a run down shack here, all in the name of survival. It wasn't ever easy as there were always bigger vagrants, always more malicious individuals who were looking to take scraps from the wealthy's plates, and more over there was always someone eyeing what he happened to have and what he had was barely enough to keep himself going most of the time.

The amount of beatings Ryoto took in his early years from others who were in the same boat or from those that caught him in an act of desperation to steal something necessary to live was countless. For a while Ryoto tried to avoid the beatings, tried to be more swift, and more careful with his thievery, but nothing he did worked. Too many empty mouths and roving eyes in the streets for him to deal with to be sneaky or to be fast with his actions. So, Ryoto knew that the only way to truly improve his chances for survival was to defend himself. He didn't like that he had to be violent or aggressive to others, but the choice of having nothing to feed himself with was not something he could live with, literally. So he began to defend himself, almost becoming feral like a wild animal backed into a corner when it came to protecting what he could find to survive through this he earned a reputation as a wild child. This reputation alone became a saving grace, as people began to realize that messing with Ryoto would usually lead to a violent interaction that wasn't necessarily in their favor.

Everything was to live, but for what? Ryoto always wondered that in those early days moving from run down shack to abandoned shed. Just what was Ryoto trying to live for besides living and existing, the thought of continuing on this path of just being alive was not really enough for him to truly feel like he had carved out a place for himself. But what could he hope to achieve with what little he could muster to stay alive with? When Ryoto finally reached his teenage years he had become disenfranchised with the idea of this type of survival, but he had also become quite depressed at his lot in life. He was living sure, but still the idea of what he was going to do with that life just didn't seem to want to materialize before him. He occasionally had lofty dreams of being an owner of business or of being some big time head honcho in the Rukongai, but how he could get there was not something he could ever define or figure out.

One day, however things changed. During one of his early morning routines of dumpster diving for scraps, he came across a flier tossed away by chance. The flier promised money in exchange for service, all that Ryoto would need to display was some combat skill and perhaps some potential for growth. Intrigued by the idea of leaving the life he was living behind and almost completely lost in the never-ending battle for survival that his time in the streets had become, Ryoto decided to give it a shot. He took a quick bath in one of the many streams throughout the Rukongai and put on the best rags he had at his disposal and went on his way toward where the flier had told him to go. It was there that he saw the Shinigami. He had a few interactions with them, mostly bad as they tried to catch him, or tried to stop him from filling his stomach with a delicious roll he had stolen from a stall, but he was determined. He needed to change his life and this was the only way he could think of doing it.

At first they looked at him in disgust, viewing him as just another homeless vagrant looking to steal some coin off of a potential recruit to go to the academy, but after a while of just standing in line waiting for his turn to be examined, that disgust turned to curiosity. A few of the shinigami knew him as the wild child, they knew him as being a thief, but now they were looking at him with a different kind of judgement than before. They were assessing him, wondering if that underneath all that skin and bones beat the heart of a potential comrade. The test was difficult and though Ryoto showed promise and did everything he could to pass it, he just didn't succeed in passing his first time. However, the curiosity of one of the examiners was all it took for Ryoto to be told to take the exam again in a months time when they came back for more potential recruits. Ryoto nodded his head, upset at himself for failing, but more than willing to come back in a months time if it meant he could turn his life around.

This willingness to change and to became better than he had been before during his first time taking the exam became motivation for that month. He trained, remembering the questions he had been asked, and the things he had been asked to do and using those as goal posts that he needed to move through. Shinigami would occasionally see Ryoto training, funnily enough those shinigami that had grown to hate interacting with him due to his reputation would give him food occasionally, or help him understand the things he was trying to accomplish with the questions part of the exam. Maybe it was these social interactions that really helped him or maybe it was his will to succeed that pushed him over the hump, but his second time taking the exam went much better than his first time. It was through this that he passed the second exam, not with flying colors like most people would have wanted, but barely squeaking by. It was fine with him, he had wanted change, and he had achieved change, now it was all on him how far he would take it.

His time in the academy was quite different than living on the streets. He existed to be a sponge, learning everything he could even if he was viewed as a low class student, one of the lowest in fact due his exam scores, but he was still enthusiastic. Much more so than some of the nobles who passed through the halls and took for granted all that they had been given while passing their judging eyes over those that they viewed as lesser. Routinely those eyes would dart to Ryoto, who still was quite a mess, less malnourished due to the cafeteria, but still much too low class to be viewed as a potential shinigami in their eyes. Bullying occurred from time to time, but Ryoto who had defended everything he owned in the streets on multiple occasions was much more ferocious than most of the noble and higher class students were used to. Still, Ryoto tried to make friends, and was always studying for something or another. He never ceased his drive to be as good as he could be as he knew that at any moment the rug could be pulled out from underneath him, the idea of losing everything, and having to start over did not sit well with him.

Tests were tough, teachers were harsh, but all in all it beat fighting for his survival alone. He never once grew complacent and would at times talk his fellow students' ears off about thing he could not always grasp. Kido became a sore subject with him, as the concept of spiritual magic never really stuck with him, but he became quite skilled in hand to hand, and weapon based combat respectively. Those skills came more naturally and were from a place that he could actually relate to as opposed to standing around chanting some kind of spell in the background. He became labeled a brute by the upper class students, but the other low class students saw him as their rising star due to his skill with the blade and his hands. He gained friends quite easily and he always strove to put them first, even at his own detriment at times, and earned a reputation for having a heart of gold when it came to helping those who had nothing to call their own.

Nobles hated Ryoto because he had a natural disdain for them, even those that seemed to be nice he never really could trust, and never really tried to extend a hand of friendship to. Still all the while he grinded, worked with the friends he had, and struggled when things got hard while not once giving up on what his new life path was. It was through all his struggles and hardships that Ryoto would eventually graduate, not a first round pick for a guard squad by any means, but none the less he would get the honor of putting on the black robes, but first he would need to learn the name of his Zanpakutō. This was a requirement and something that he had dreaded having to do for a long while. You see, for all the time that he had spent at the academy not once had he heard the voice of his blade, not once had there been an attempt to form some kind of bond no matter how hard he tried to make a real connection.

The instructors pushed Ryoto hard to learn the name of his sword, wanting him to succeed as they seemed to value his potential, and also were just curious as to what sort of skill he would be blessed with. Due to the nature of who Ryoto was, they assumed it would be something destructive, and physical, but they could not be any further from the truth. As the day of graduation neared, the spirit of his sword decided to make her presence known, and it wasn't at all what Ryoto had expected or anyone else for that matter. The spirit of his sword, Lady Luck, was not what anyone had envisioned. While some people got the ability to slash through solid stone or the ability to harness the power of the elements, Ryoto was granted the ability to increase his allies luck, and their power. It made him a shoe in to join a squad that excelled in supporting allies, but it didn't seem to match up at all with Ryoto the individual. Ryoto barely grasped kido, an almost necessary aspect of a support oriented shinigami, and was more suited to standing on the front lines swinging his sword around.

Even more so, the released state of the blade wasn't even a weapon, his sword would always turn into a golden coin that would almost appear to glow while in his palm. Hardly the weapon of a warrior, more like the weapon of a merchant. Dismayed and a little disheartened by the development, Ryoto would have to accept his new lot in life, and would spend most of his time while not working with his new squad studying kido. He felt isolated there, not because anyone was actively attempting isolate him, but because it just happened naturally. His lack of knowledge in spirit magic and his differing views on how a shinigami was supposed to be gave him no one really to confide in, save for his lieutenant who mostly was forced to deal with him by the captain. Time went by and while progress was made through study and training, Ryoto still was not making the leaps that he had envisioned. His life was not bad, but neither was it good, and that familiar itch of complacency began to return, but this time he just couldn't scratch it.

Obligations were now tied around Ryoto like chains, any bit of chance for him to make radical changes to his life, and his situation were all covered in red tape. Rules, regulations, and expectations, these became the horrid bindings that now bound a once free spirit who had merely wanted to change his lot in life. He had graduated from surviving the hardships of the Rukongai, to now being a man who had to follow the rules, and deal with his less than enthusiastic new allies. The wild child had been domesticated and in many ways, Ryoto seemed to have lost his edge. Some days, Ryoto would even fondly remember the fights he would get into in the Rukongai, and all the mischief he would get into. He dare not call them the good old days, but they were much better than the scoldings he got from his superiors, or the side eye glances he got from his squad mates as he flubbed complex spellcraft. He decided that he need to address it one day, all the feelings that were boiling up inside of him, and all the things going on in his day to day life.

So he went to meet his superiors, unannounced, feeling that if he could just talk to them, and try to get them to understand then perhaps they could help him at the least. Walking to the captain's door, he heard talking on the other side, and he decided to wait for an opening to interrupt, but the subject of the conversation caught his ear. Inside he could clearly hear the lieutenant and his captain talking about him, talking about his mediocre results, and his lack of progress. Talking about how he probably needed to go back to the academy and about how he seemed to be failing them. It stung Ryoto, making him feel multiple confusing emotions, but mostly it made him feel depressed. He wasn't just disappointing himself, he was disappointing his superiors to the point that they thought he needed to go back to the academy. The thought of having to return there, to face ridicule from nobles, and the stares of the instructors who had seen such promise in him was more than he could bare.

He had to escape, he had to be free, and he had to to do it right then and there. Marching out of the barracks into the streets, he made purposeful movements toward wherever wasn't there, and as he did he felt the chains begin to break. He felt all those burdens that he had been feeling being lifted with each step, all the isolation, and all the scorn being pushed aside, allowing Ryoto to breathe. His mind became clear and the idea of what he wanted to do became more and more vivid. All he knew is he had to escape and disappear, and that was exactly what he did. Days went by, missing notifications were put up, and people made an effort to find out what happened to Ryoto. Months went by, those notifications began to fade or naturally fall apart, and the people who had made the effort of looking for Ryoto quickly began to settle back into routine, their curiosity remained of what happened to him. Years passed by, the notifications were long since gone, and the only recollection of Ryoto's existence were documents that he had signed so long ago. The idea that Ryoto had died was passed around, the concept that he had went AWOL reached the ears of important individuals, and in the end Ryoto was just simply forgotten to time.

But what did Ryoto do for all this time? While the Seretei didn't skip a beat and the Gotei continued to be the institution it was, Ryoto had simply reinvented himself. His name a product of two people who never loved him? Discarded, Alister Brand was his name now, and he felt more at ease in his own skin for it. Being disheartened about the limitations of his own zanpakuto? Have a nice heart to heart with Lady Luck about what exactly the powers that she could grant him were. Hell, he would spend several decades learning all the tricks, and all of the skills that he could from her. She was not an easy lady to please, as most of the time he would have to bet, or gamble something to be granted even a sliver of knowledge about the powers of his weapon Fortuna, but she was willing to share. Hell, when he did win these games she became like an open book, and would spill all the details for hours at a time. Much like when he was at the academy, Alister became a sponge for information, and techniques, but unlike last time the soul of his blade was his instructor, and she seemed to be much more on the level.

A century passed with little to no thought given to the life that he had thrown away, all that was now on Alister's mind was the burgeoning growth of his commercial empire that he had been cultivating for years. In all the time that Alister had spent away from the Gotei and their trappings, he had acquired, built, and managed some of the most affordable inns, taverns, and bars in the Rukongai. Just how could he have afforded to purchase these sort of things on the salary of a low ranking Gotei member? Gambling mostly, Lady Luck granted him this much in the form of a boon to his own luck, and in essence allowed him to "cheat" his way into a small fortune which then became a rather large fortune. With this money Alister chose to invest back into the community by purchasing up run down areas and converting them into affordable recreation units that could house people more effectively. Having been a homeless child once, this idea had been a no-brainer, but to expedite his way through boring posturing to buy land from the well off to make it possible he had to rub elbows with some seedy individuals, nobles included of course. This meant following the old edict of "faking it till you make it", he created a persona to hide behind. The grandiose and ever lucky benefactor known as Alister Brand spoiled the elites, dined with nobles, and rubbed elbows with the rising social stars of the Soul Society all in the name of buying up what he needed to make his vision a reality.

Most people bought the whole thing, seeing Alister as a stuck up snob with a ton of money to throw around, but a few would drift out of his circle, namely those who were much too clever, or had some sort of conscience telling them to not socialize with the fake Alister. It worked out for Alister though, money came flowing in from the people he wanted to exploit, and he would turn around and enrich the communities he deemed to be worth enriching while also encroaching on corrupt business practices of those that he wished to push out. All the while he continued his act of being a snobby and rather arrogant individual who was simply undermining the established corruption with his own brand of corruption. He, of course, would make enemies this way, but over the years of acquiring things there was no way one could escape a few threats, and a few violent altercations. It was only natural that he would keep the necessary staff to defend himself on payroll, a rather hefty payroll, all the while training his body, and mind for the times that would not be enough. All the while he kept his real identity a secret and his motivations for doing what he did a mystery, after all if he was found out to be a bleeding heart then people would try to exploit him instead.

I. Natural Abilities

» Natural Abilities:

Survival Instinct: A sixth sense of sorts that has been developed through the harsh means of being homeless and having to fight to survive during his earlier years. Unlike sensing someone's spiritual energy or what not, Alister can tend to see killing intent, or potential killing intent quite easily with his honed eyes. With this instinct, Alister is quite adept at getting out of sticky situations, looking for possible escape routes, or even methods to survive on coming attacks that would be lethal through necessary sacrifices.

Skilled Martial Artist: Maybe not as good as some of those that have spent lifetimes dedicated to the fist and the blade, but quite a bit better than an amateur, Alister has kept up his training since his time away from the Gotei began. He has, however, broadened his studies in the fist and sword from much more than the linear and basic education granted by the academy and has expanded it to include studying much more advanced techniques to compliment his own fighting style. Having hired several masters to teach him things and improve upon his base skill set as a warrior costed a small fortune, but it was more than worth the cost to feel like he could defend himself properly.

Wild Side: While many would assume that the decadent lifestyle that Alister has built for himself now would have helped erode away the days of struggle that he felt when he was younger they would be wrong. When backed into a corner or threatened in a particular way that side of himself that he keeps buried tends to break loose and break things. Gaining a savage like mentality to defend what is his, Alister relentlessly, and unpredictably attacks those that awakens this side to himself until either he or his opponent are no longer capable of continuing.

Better Than Average Endurance: Years spent taking beatings in the streets and having to deal with shortages of food have lead to a much better grasp on being durable in not only terms of outer durability, but inner durability as well. While by no means immune to damage or indestructible, Alister can take his licks and keep on ticking so to speak. Knowing how to turn his body in specific ways to lessen impacts or how to endure starvation and sleep deprivation are just normal aspects to how Alister functions on the whole at this point.

Ambidextrous: Alister is quite capable of using either hand to wield a sword or any instrument be it a writing utensil or a weapon. He does have a preference which he will sometimes swap to cause confusion among people who would potentially target a potential weakness such as a dominant hand during a fight.

Free-Style Blade Form: While not necessarily a prodigy or someone who has inherited a style from a master, Alister has created a mix and match type of combat style that doesn't only incorporate his swordsmanship, but also the use of his limbs and body. Combined with his ambidexterity and his natural predisposition to hide his intentions Alister utilizes feints, feigning injuries, and even mock-cowardice to gain advantages in fights. Some may call this dirty or even underhanded, but Alister does what he must to survive, and besides history only remembers winners anyway. So while his opponent may be watching for the swing of his blade, they may find themselves receiving a kick to the groin, or a splash of pocket sand right to the eyes to cause confusion. While block Alister he may simply turn his blade to catch the light source nearby to blind his opponent with the refraction of light off his blade. All in all, it is a style that is truly unseemly to watch, but effective in its' application.

I. Racial Abilities

» Racial Abilities:

Skilled Hakuda Practitioner: During the early days of his life everything was a struggle, before he even held a blade life and death was decided by who could take a licking and who can deliver a beating. For a while Alister was incapable of doing either of those things, but time is the ultimate teacher, and over the years Alister picked up quite a bit of skill in protecting what was his with his own two hands. Known to be dangerous when fighting for what he believes is his, he developed a reputation of being like a wild beast when trapped in a corner, and even fought off a few shinigami sometimes when they tried to take what he had stole or found to survive. This ground work started through necessity has expanded over the years through training in the more advanced stances and from the best instructors that money could afford. Spared no expense.

Talented Zanjutsu Practitioner: While perhaps not capable of utilizing a bankai yet, Alister has a great relationship with Lady Luck, his blade's spirit which had taught him quite a bit of tips, and tricks to utilize his shikai properly. Namely the ability to actually turn his coin, the original form of his shikai, into an actual sword that he can actually fight with the power of the weapon as opposed to merely lending its' luck to others. Furthermore he has been educated in the ways of the blade by hiring instructors to further his education beyond just what Lady Luck is willing to share at the time. Though learning from Lady Luck would be much easier, she usually tends to attach wagers on her offering of advice, and through several losses Alister has learned to only truly gamble against her when he is pretty sure he will win.
I. Zanpakutō

» Zanpakutō Name: Fortuna/Lady Luck

» Zanpakutō Spirit:
Alister Brand (FINISHED) 74a782751f883de12e3406d1061629e980628c83

Lady Luck is a hard one to fully grasp. On first meeting one would assume that she is a dominant and ruthless soul who wants nothing more than to watch Alister squirm under the weight of every potential loss that he could experience at her hands, but much like Alister she is not who she appears to be. On the inside, Lady Luck is a gambler and loves to play games with high stake wagers or even low stake wagers. She gloats when she wins and pouts when she loses, all the while always enjoying the company of her patron, Alister Brand, and always doing what she can to help guide him on his way in her own personal manner of doing and approaching things. She truly thinks the world of Alister, who she believes is the ultimate gambler, and believes in him to a fault. Which is why when he loses at games to her that she tends to go overboard with the gloating to force Alister to improve his tactics out of anger and desperation.

Though, as said before she is a gambler, and from time to time will cheat to win a game or two. Not only to win herself, but to also keep Alister sharp as she doesn't want his determination and drive to be great to ever be snuffed out no matter what. She tends to have a snide way of talking if Alister doesn't get what she is trying to teach him the first time and also has a tendency to lecture him when he bets on the wrong horse. She has no true alignment, not leaning to either evil or good, and tends to focus on pushing Alister to take on the hardest challenge. After all the harder the game is to win the bigger the payout when the game is won after all.

» Inner World: Imagine a large tower lit up by neon lights in a perfect nigh sky line, on the inside of this tower is a rather large casino with several floors all with several games to be played ranging from slots to poker to roulette. The casino is always abuzz with the sound of patrons who do not exist and the sound of arguments that are not occurring as phantom players gamble to their heart's content. In the middle of the casino is a large sculpture that rises to the top floor of the casino of Fortuna in its' sealed form, the statue is made entirely of gold, and embedded in it are several jewels of varying types that glitter in the casino's interior lights. On the second to last floor of the casino, Lady Luck resides, always looking down on the floor below with a smile of glee on her face as she looks down on anyone who would enter Alister's world. The top floor is locked for both Lady Luck and Alister, when asked about it Lady Luck always states that Alister is not ready to make the ultimate wager, and brushes him off from his attempts to ask for more information.

» Sealed Zanpakutō Appearance: While not necessarily the most beautiful weapon in the world, Fortuna is a high quality katana. The only notable features are the hilt of the sword being covered in the different suits associated with most of a gambler's favorite card games. Beyond that, the blade appears to be quite normal, and quite sharp.

» Sealed Zanpakutō Power: While sealed, Alister believes himself to be slightly luckier. Perhaps this is a power of his sealed zanpakuto or him making up a lie to get into people's heads.

I. Shikai

» Shikai Release Phrase: The World is My Oyster, Fortuna!

» Shikai Appearance: In its' original form, Fortuna is a golden coin that glows rather dimly in Alister's hands. On one of the faces of the coin is the face of Lady Luck, grinning with confidence, and looking off to the west. On the other side of the coin is Alister's face, looking rather glum, and looking off to the east. Due to Alister not really liking how useless this form was for combat, he worked extraneously with Lady Luck to find a way to change its' shape to be more useful for combat. Fortuna's evolved form is that of a katana, the blade itself is pure gold, and has four different gems that are in the shape of the four suits in playing cards embedded into the blade. The gems glow dimly when Alister is wielding the weapon.

» Shikai Abilities:

Lady Luck's Blessing: Fortuna is not the typical shikai, mainly because at the center of it all Lady Luck is just not a normal spirit either. While active, Alister can wager skill ranks at a one to one ratio to increase his skills to up to 'ELITE' rank to better protect himself from attacks or to give his sword swings a little more 'pop'. These skills that are being wagered can not go lower than 'BEGINNER' rank and this increase in power only lasts for 3 posts before the wager is reverted and all skills are returned to normal. Only one skill at a time can be effected by Lady Luck's Blessing and only General and Shinigami skills can be effected by this ability.

Oops I'm A Cheat: Once per thread, Alister can cheat the system, and break Lady Luck's Blessing's coveted rule set. For 3 posts, Alister can increase two of his skills at the cost of only one skill, the ratio is still one to one, and the skills can not go lower than 'BEGINNER' or higher than 'ELITE'. After utilizing this ability Alister will receive a penalty in the form of an energy backlash that causes extreme pain and a large amount of disorientation. After all, cheaters never win.

It's worth noting this isn't accurate, and the vast majority of members of the Gotei don't have any release.

Shikai

Shifts in skill level are not generally considered approvable outside extreme niche circumstances. This release should be wholly reworked.

Skills

As a note, character applications have been adjusted so that new members, or members returning after an extended absence, are required to play characters of more typical power to adjust to the site's climate and power level. Given the character you've written here, his history suggests abilities higher than the starting character skill levels. His abilities would need to be brought down, or the character would need to be tabled for now, and a different character application should be brought forward for your first character returning.[/adm]
