Chidori stared down the open pothole with a disgruntled look on her face. "Did they really have to give us this job?"

Flashback to just earlier that day, when the Seventh Division was assigned with a sort of bust-type mission where there was alleged activity of a hollow that had called New York home. This hollow was known by the moniker of Rat King, fitting as he was able to create underlings that would do his bidding. He preferred the sewers over Hueco Mundo, suspected to be because of the current state of affairs there. Over the past couple of months, he has feasted on the souls of humans that end up in his domain such as children and city workers, which is in turn making him a threat to anyone and everyone. With the debriefing out of the way, due to the actual powers of the hollow, they decided to send some of the weaker members of the division to deal with the problem.

That meant Chidori and Alastor. Because she was relatively new to the division, she hasn't learned people's names or what they're like so she was already off to a rocky start. Not only that, she's never been to New York nor really know how to get into the sewer system. Lucky, there's always some kind of maintenance going on in New York and it wasn't hard to find an open manhole every couple of blocks.

She stared down the open pothole with a disgruntled look on her face. "Did they really have to give us this job?" Her head was raised to face her partner. This was going to be a long day.

How did he end up with this job? He'd never been to America before but hey, you see one Shadow Fall controlled place and you've seen them all. At least Alastor was pretty sure he was still in an area of America under the control of Shadow Fall. Maybe he should pay attention more and the stuff.

He knew he was working this task with some woman, Chidori Shihouin. Part of him said he should recognise that name and there was an odd familiarity to it but he couldn't recall what about it really made him question it. Honestly the noble system was all this new thing to him too that he'd ignored for the most part to focus on his shinigami duties.

"Huh? Well I'm kinda used to it you know? Guess it's just the fun of being a substitute shinigami."

Letting out a sigh he noticed how she seemed very turned off by the mission, which was fair, sewers definitely weren't a girl's best friend but what else could he do other than tell her to sit this one out? He was stupid but he wasn't a stupid hero that'd offer her an out to the mission just because of her sex.

"Wait, wait, wait, what? You're only a substitute? Not even the full deal?" Chidori completely disregarded everything about the mission in that moment as she stared in concern at her new partner. Taking someone who isn't even a full shinigami could spell trouble if this Rat King was as strong as the debriefing made him out to be. Because he was only a substitute, that meant: no kido, no shikai, nothing supportive. All he was was a walking sword, though to be fair so was she. "We are so fucked."

And with that out of the way, Chidori jumped straight into the open manhole, feet first. She bent her knees on the way down and the first thing that she would notice was the awful smell. The smell was the worse part of this entire job, though she didn't expect much seeing as how a sewer was where the mission was said to take place. The next thing she noticed was the sheer amount of rats that were crawling about. They were at least the size of cats and they had the numbers of rabbits, something she quickly came to hate.

"Yooooooo, hurry the fuck up! I don't want to be down here a minute longer than I need to be!" Her attention was fully focused on the rodent scurrying at her feet. Her zanpakuto was sheathed, but wouldn't be for long if Alastor didn't come down with her.

"Hey, I may be a substitute but you're not anything special yourself. What's your excuse anyway?"

From what he knew, he was still getting his head around how much the aristocracy mattered in the Soul Society but he was actually under a century. If this chick was anything like their captain she could be upwards of multiple centuries in age and she was still at some substitute level. Checkmate.

"I'm comin' I'm comin' jeez."

He sighed at this woman's impatience. She was really pushy. Regardless of her demanding words he followed along and landed surprisingly gracefully before stretching. He left his body somewhere safe already so it wasn't so bad.

"Wow. Really stinks down here huh?"

It wouldn't be right to not point out the obvious here.

The kid made a good point: besides her name Chidori was nothing special. She doesn't hold any seated positions in the gotei and the only real thing that makes her unique is her reiatsu, but even then having an element isn't that rare. She kept all this realization to herself as she began to search around for an clues. A season shinigami would just be able to follow the hollow based off of it's energy, but because Chidori was anything but seasoned she would have to rely on her wits.

"Shh." She noticed that the rats the were scurrying before had left, all of them going in the same direction. While she didn't get anything from them before, it wouldn't be surprising if they were just minions of Rat King. Rumor has it that he's terrified of Shinigami, so if they were acting as scouts then it would be only natural that they would run to notify him. Problem was that Chidori and friend would have to reach Rat King before they did or else this entire mission would be a bust.

"Alright c'mon. We're gonna race the rats and we best not lose." And with that she was off, hoping that this guy wasn't a complete idiot and figured out the situation at the same time she did or else it was going to take some explaining on the way. Her shackles echoed through the tunnel in an eerie way, making Chidori sound like a horror movie killer or something.

Yeah, what a win. He was expecting more trouble, weren't girls way harder to deal with or something? It's a good thing she didn't seem like the bitchy type, at least not one to be vocal about it. Once he dropped down he wasn't exactly looking around, he was trying to get his head around this reikaku thing and sense energy.

Once Chidori made a loud hushing sound he was about ready to tell her to shut up while he was trying to sense energy. Why did the captain send him with this woman that didn't know how to sense energy? What a bother.

"Race 'em? You're nuts if you think we're gonna outrun rats"

Not eager to be left behind in this shithole he tagged along and tried to keep up. Why was she so fast anyway?

"What are you on about anyway? I get he's the rat king and all but how do you know we're not chasing normal rats?"

"Oh, am I really crazy though? Because last time I checked, we were able to do this-" Chidori demonstrated her incredibly sub-par Hoho skills by flash stepping a few feet a head and nearly tripping, as this was also the first time she's attempted to do this with the shackles on. Luckily though, she was able to keep her balance and quickly returned to the pace she was at before.

"But, yeah, you know what I mean. And I'm pretty sure these aren't your normal rats because normally when you spook a rodent, they disperse out in the safest way possible. Now these rats, all of them decided to go in the exact same direction which is something that normally a hivemind would do because it's just easier to have the entire group do the same action than have each individual do something different." This was actually a lot of thinking on her part, granted she made up a lot of the information on the fly and there was the possibility she wasn't even remotely correct. Anyways, Chidori kept up a decent pace with the rats and followed them, and after a while there was a faint hollow energy coming from further down the path. Assuming her partner would have also gotten it by then, she would send a smirk his way, as if to taunt him.

"Stay on your toes, we don't know how things are going to be from here on out."

Listening as he proceeded with her he tried to keep up with his also sub-par skill in flash stepping. What she said made some sense and so he couldn't counter back, it's not like he had an idea of some other theory to challenge it with so he should just shut up and accept it.

"Yeah I guess. Alright."

With that out of the way all that was left was to chase these rats.

The two would eventually end up in a large circular area, with the water at their feet flowing downward into a pool roughly 7 meters from the opening they were standing in. The opening itself was round as well, with there being 7 other ones around the opening as well a meter apart. While the room was dimly lit, there was clearly a hollowing sitting in the center of the pool, crouched, along with hundreds of rats. It seemed to be talking to the rats that were swarming around it, the closest ones being absorbed into the hollow.

"Gah, you idiots! You led them--led them--right to me! Now I--we, we-- must deal with them!" It brought it's arms up and slammed them down into the water, then turned it's head towards Chidori and Alastor.

Chidori, during all of this, was gripping the hilt of her zanpakuto, waiting for the hollow to strike. "Yo, kid, get ready!" And with that, Chidori jumped down, and the moment she moved the hollow moved in retaliation, flinging itself straight up in the air, directly at Chidori. She drew her zanpakuto and held it between her and the hollow, hoping that she can defend from it's attacks while Alastor would attack it while it was busy.

What she didn't account for, was the wave of rats that followed it, extending like a pillar from the water.

When you kill a hollow, go from behind and bring it through the mask

He recalled a lesson in dealing with Hollows 101. So while Chidori drew aggro of the mini boss he circled behind it, trying to avoid the trashmobs. Once he got close enough it was an easy solution to the situation, a large leap and a cleave from behind to try and sweep through the masses of rats to kill him.
