Shiro | White and Grey Part

“Yo, bro! Today’s the day. You sure you’re ready for the test? Don’t want to get a big fat zero, now would we?”

Shiro didn’t bother getting peeved about his friend’s teasing. He’s too tired to care right now. The only thing in he cares about right now is passing the test coming up. Ever since he was challenged by Miss Kuchiki, he’s dedicated his time to understanding everything that he needs to know for the test. He even used up his friend’s resources to better his chances. Damn Teach. If it wasn’t for her, he wouldn’t be stressing so much right now. He never takes anything seriously until situations like this arise. He prefers a quiet life, but he wasn’t going to let himself get dragged through the mud because of one nap session.

“Shiroi? Earth to Shiroi? Why did you even bet on this? A zero would make your grades plummet.”

That’s true. He does the minimum to keep his grades up, but that means that one bad grade could cause his grade to plummet, and getting it back up would require way too much work. He can’t afford a zero. On the bright side, if he passes with a perfect score, Miss Kuchiki will become his tour guide. She’s a bit cranky and gets peeved easily, but he knows her. He was afraid of actually doing the internship because he wasn’t sure what kind of person he’d end up with, and it was more of an on the spot decision to hook her in like that. If it’s her though, he’s sure that everything will blow by like a breeze. Miss Kuchiki tries to act tough, but she’s a bit of a pushover sometimes.

“Don’t worry bout it. I got this.”

He didn’t care to listen too closely to his friend anymore. The dude started going off about how hot the teachers are and all that crazy mess. He’s not the one under pressure, Shiro is. But, after taking his seat, a deep breath would calm his nerves a tad, his thoughts lost in his memories. He can’t afford to return to something like that, not ever again. All he has to do is wait for Miss Kuchiki and pass the test with flying colors. No big deal.

PROFESSOR KUCHIKI

Well, today was the "fated" day, so to speak. Rukia certainly hadn't forgotten the bet she had made with her most average student, but she still wasn't particularly worried about it either way. She would, however, be a bit amused if all of his bravado came up short.

"Good afternoon, everyone. Today will just be the test, so when you finish, feel free to stick around for free study, or just head home if you have something else going on."

She'd just get right to grading as tests came in, after all, so there wasn't much incentive for her to try and hold a lesson today. That was only more true when she considered how long it took a few of the students to cover all their answers.

"You've got the whole class, so don't rush if you think the answer's rattling around in your head somewhere. The questions are on the board, so just write down your answers and turn them into me. You can start now."

And into the seat at the front of the lecture hall Rukia sat, reading through some material from other classes that needed grading. Man, she might have felt old, but at least she didn't need glasses yet.

Ugh. Test time. What is this shit? Everything on the board is foreign language. What did he study again? That and this and, oh. Alright. The board’s starting to look understandable now. He’s got this. With a little smirk, his pencil starts moving at a decent pace. He’s going to show Miss Kuchiki.

“Ah. Here ya go, teach.”

The first done, huh? All the studying really paid off. He couldn’t help but notice all the other students giving him shady looks. He can probably imagine what they’re thinking right now. It’s not every day the slacker in class makes a test look like a breeze. But, as much as he’d like to rub it in, he’s exhausted. He did pull a bunch of all-nighters to make sure he makes a perfect.

“Well, anyway. See ya latah, Teach.”

And, with his bed a pretty picture in his head, he just can’t wait to mess it all up. If only he could sleep the day away, but he does have other classes to attend, so he must get a nap at least. If only he realized one crucial thing before turning away and taking his leave. He forgot to put his name on his test.

Well well well, wasn't this a surprise? Rukia's problem student, the first one to finish the test. It could be a pretty good sign, but it could just as easily mean his answers weren't right in the slightest.

"Enjoy the rest of your day, Mr. Shiroi."

She'd thought of a handful of snide comments to make about him taking a nap, but thought better of it given the rest of the students were taking a test. Damn. Oh well, on to grading then...

...This idiot, he hadn't even remembered to write his name down. Well, that was a failing grade there, but she didn't have any other tests to grade yet. Might as well look through the whole thing for now, right?

Correct, correct, correct... He'd... He'd gotten everything right. Every single question was entirely right. And he'd forgotten to actually put his name on it. That was a zero, of course. But...he must have studied for it. Ugh, she hated this. Grabbing her brush, she marked down her final score at the top: 100. Of course, in the empty margins above, she made sure to mark down the name for him, in quite bold letters so he understood.

The next day and he’s feeling perfect. Well, he could use another nap, but that’s whatever. Naps are never not the answer. Anyway, he’s so into himself that he’s not even bothering with his pals. He just waltzes into class and takes his seat knowing that he’s won the bet. If you believe it, then it must be true, right? Yep. He’s 100% sure he aced the test with a perfect score. Miss Kuchiki’s going to be all over him. He can see it now. Her praises are going to prove enough to even sway the Soul King.

“Man. Perfection sure is a curse.”

He’s muttering his own excellence to himself. The other students are a bit put off by it, but he doesn’t care. Why should he? Ah, he couldn’t help but kick back and relax, his arms behind his head as his chaired leaned a bit. GG, Gay Bowser.

PROFESSOR KUCHIKI

"Morning, everyone. The class average was pretty good on this one, I'm impressed. I'll run through everyone, come pick up your test when I call your name, okay?"

Rukia listed off each and every name in class, offering a few words of advice or of congratulation to each student as they came by. In the end, only one student went uncalled, one student in the class who had still yet to recieve their exam. Clearing her throat, Rukia held up the test before the whole class, certainly enough that everyone could see the name written at the top.

"Well, there's only one test left, so whoever hasn't gotten theirs, I'd recommend you come claim it."

This is weird. Everyone else is getting their test but him, and he’s positive he turned his in first. Doesn’t that mean he should have gotten his first? Miss Kuchiki must have dropped them and got the names mixed up. That must be it. She’s going through the whole class, but his name still hasn’t been called. This isn’t funny. She’s just doing this to make him nervous, he knows it. Even his friend is giving him a worried look. He has half the mind to get up and call her out for toying with him, but that’s when she held up the last test.

Crap. No way. No fucking way. That’s not his name, but he doesn’t have his test. Name… Name… Name… Wait. Come on! Don’t tell him… He forgot to put his name on his test!? Of course, Miss Kuchiki, with all her petty wisdom, would have filled it out for him. She’s a nice woman. Wait! No. She’s a little bitch! His name isn’t Big Idiot! He can’t get up and take that. Everyone’s going to laugh at him, and he hates being the center of attention, positively and negatively. Then, someone busts out laughing right next to him, and it’s none other than his so-called friend. It seems even that guy had put one and one together. With him laughing, slowly, everyone else got the picture too, and now the class is having a bit of fun at his expense.

Now it doesn’t matter if he was going to take the zero or not. He was so close to just sucking it up and preparing himself to fail this class too. With a defeated sigh, he rose from his seat and took his sorrowful march to the front where he shot Miss Kuchiki a death glare, his pale face flushed with embarrassment.

“Not cool, Teach. Could have spared a man his pride.” He’d mutter to her as he took his test and marched himself back to his seat. He would look at it and see he passed it perfectly, but the victory is bittersweet at best. He just wants to die right now, but before that, he made sure to run his pencil over the Kanji that won’t stop taunting him.

Naturally, Rukia's professionalism as an educator kept her from joining the class in their bit of amusement at her student's expense, but she also did have to put in some work not to chuckle at it. After all, this had been pretty funny.

"Congratulations on your score, Mr. Shiro. I suppose I'll be seeing you after class to discuss your apprenticeship in the Seventh Division?"

She was, of course, a woman of her word. Rukia may not have won this particular bet, but she wouldn't have made it in the first place if she hadn't been willing to take the loss. That'd just be stupid. Plus, now he had to further own up to all of this. It was a win-win, really.

Bittersweet! Man. Now he just wants to close his eyes and forget about this moment in his life, but he knows that he’s just going to get more shit if he sleeps in her class again. So, begrudgingly, he sat still, letting his peeved thoughts keep him awake as class went on. He didn’t even notice it had ended at first until his friend had flicked the back of his head. However, he didn’t take his leave just yet, waiting for everyone else to exit the lecture hall before rising. Taking himself to the front of the class, his paper is placed on Miss Kuchiki’s desk, his lazy eyes focused and bitter.

“You know I’m going to be getting crap for this for at least a week, right?”

He’d ask before losing steam and sighing. Why did he stay again? Oh, yeah. He had won the bet, but at the cost of his dignity for a while. How did he forget his name!? He’s not going to lie and say it wasn’t funny, but he’s not going to laugh at himself. He’s not that much of a jobber. He’s going to have to get her back somehow, and he’s already plotting since they’re going to be seeing a lot more of each other. But, for now, he wants to hear if Miss Kuchiki is even apologetic for embarrassing him like that. Probably not, knowing her.

"Well, I thought it might be a little less embarrassing than a few of the other names I had in mind. At least people know you passed."

Given it was only the two of them in the classroom now, Rukia allowed herself a smug grin at his situation. Even if she had strictly lost the bet, she was very much feeling like a winner right about now.

"I'm impressed at your score, even if you did forget the easiest question of all of them. You have those brains up there all along, or did you just pick them up to make sure you won the bet?"

Resting her chin on her hands, her smile no less present than before, Rukia offered a small shrug, that in some way could maybe be taken as an apology. Not likely, though.

"Well, you did win. Looking forward to working with you."
