THE SHINIGAMI APPLICATION

I. Basic Information

» Name: Kohaku Okumura
» Alias: None
» Age: ~120
» Appears: Early 20s
» Birthday: Doesn’t Remember
» Gender: Male
» Height: 5’11”
» Weight: 165

» Appearance Written: Kohaku has bestial yellow eyes and emerald green hair he lets grow out passed his ears. He’s pretty well built, with an athletic, sporty physique. He wears his most prized possession, a white bead necklace with a kunai pendant, at all times. He comes off sloth-ish, lazy, like he doesn’t care about anything. He doesn’t show much emotion so he can seem pretty unapproachable.

» Alignment: Neutral
» Association:
Shirazumi-Rengokai - Since he was kicked out of Shino Academy, and he’s opted to never try again, Kohaku places his loyalties with the Shirazumi-rengokai. At least here, he’s not rejected for something he cannot control.
» Rank/Position: Member
» Specialty: Pole-arm fighting

» Sexual Orientation: Straight
» Relationship Status: Single
» Attraction: Cheerful, cute, supportive, patient, not a part of the stupid Gotei.

» Relationship(s):

Tsubine Shirazumi: This man is someone Kohaku feels strong loyalty towards. Since Tsubine is the reason Kohaku is no longer a street urchin reject, it’s easy to understand his loyalty to the man. In some ways, he’s a father figure.

Yuuki Koizumi: This is Kohaku’s long-life rival. This midget always gets on Kohaku’s nerves. Any time they see each other, they end up insulting each other, often leading to fist fights that this little shit has to cheat to win.

I. Personality

» Personality: Kohaku is one of the quiet ones who prefers his actions speak for him. He can come off as timid or shy, but just dislikes interacting with people too often. Kohaku is the type to ignore someone because he doesn’t feel like replying, even if it may irritate them. To guarantee getting a response from him, you must hold some semblance of his respect, which isn’t the easiest thing to get.

Kohaku is competitive to his core. He doesn’t back down from challenges and gets excited when he feels like he is being pushed to his limits. His competitive nature often pulls him into unexpected situations, like street fights. Sometimes, he allows himself to be pulled into some of the dumbest shit. You want to see him take a few risks? All you need to do is tell him he’d lose or isn’t good enough. He’ll jump.

Kohaku doesn’t trust many people, especially himself, and those he does have earned it. Letting people get close is dangerous, but not just because of them. Due to the nature of his inner hollow, he’s harmed people in the past. Sudden violent outbursts have targeted people that he cared about, and he doesn’t want it to happen again. This is a part of why he tries to keep a calm and collected demeanor.

Kohaku is riddled with guilt over the things he’s done in the past, especially the ones he can’t remember, but only has witnessed the aftermath of. Since he has hurt people in the past, he does fear losing control of his inner hollow again. Because of this, he often avoids social situations, finding they come with an unfair amount of stress. He prefers to hone is skills, relax, and be the fly on the wall in a crowd.

» Likes: Fighting and winning.

» Admires: Dedicated fighters.

» Dislikes: Stagnation, losing, being belittled.

I. History

» History: Kohaku lost his mother, father, and siblings, and it’s his fault. It was your normal adoptive Rukon family, and he truly loved them, even if he failed showing it. When you’re a kid that people say has serious anger issues, it isn’t easy making friends, but it’s very easy making enemies. His mother and father ran a small tea shop, and when a rude customer pissed Kohaku off, they ended up in an outright brawl. Kohaku won, but the cost was his family’s shop being burned down that night. His family had been inside, but his older brother got them out. Though they forgave him because he was protecting them, things continued spiraling.

Trying to start up new in a different district proved difficult. As Kohaku began showing signs of hunger, his family struggled to find him anything to eat. The hungrier he got, the darker things became for his family. He talked about “taking what is his” and the thrill of “corralling the weak.” Desperate for food, Kohaku started sneaking out at night to steal steal from other districts. When he stole from a up and coming gang, they retaliated by attacking his family. In the attack, his older brother was killed by a gang member trying to defend him. When they left, his family blamed him for his brother’s deaths, and so did Kohaku.

Kohaku’s life was never the same. There was no trust and very little love between them. He could hear his parents discussing abandoning him at night, but they feared what he would do if he found out. He revealed he heard everything and begged for forgiveness, claimed he did not mean for any of this to happen. It was the hunger that pushed him to take these risks. A shouting match about his inability to control himself and refusal to acknowledge his anger led to a fist fight between him and his father. When his mother tried stepping in, his rage caused him to strike her without thinking. In a panic, Kohaku fled and never returned.

The time spent alone in the Rukongai, shunned and rejected by anyone who witnessed his rage brought out a darkness in Kohaku. Unknown to him, the dangers of an inner hollow slowly grew within him. One day, he came across the man that sent his gang to burn down his home and completely lost it. A single sucker punch to the man’s jaw led to him bashing his face four, five, six, seven… and he remembers nothing after that. When Kohaku regained control of himself, he was standing in the middle of a massacre covered in the blood of the dead.

Kohaku fled the district and kept going until he reached the north-west of the Rukongai. Kohaku kept to himself until he met a guy by the name of Kazuma Minobe, a thief that shared some of his food with Kohaku. The two became good friends and Kohaku was recruited into a gang called “The Reaper’s Cross,” a group of ruffians known for extortion, gambling, and controlling a decent portion of northwest Rukon. He spent a four years there until a job went wrong. The Gotei Thirteen interrupted an operation, cornering him and Kazuma and forcing them to fight back. With some experience under his belt, they could hold them off, but something menacing in the back of Kohaku’s mind clicked on…

The first time Kohaku heard the voice, it excited him. Fighting brought him joy, and the voice promised so much more of it. The fight against the Shinigami and the gang his group planned on raiding turned into a bloodbath. With no differentiating between friend and foe, Kohaku reveled in the destruction, the death, the power he felt when letting “the voice” take over. It wasn’t until his blade was turned onto Kazuma himself that he realized he had no control. He fought, yelled, and cried as he tried killing his own friend. The hideous laughter that he heard leave his throat wasn’t his own, and the attempts to regain control caused him to black out.

With Kazuma’s death by his own hands, Kohaku planned to take his own life using the old samurai method. However, the moment the blade touched his skin, he couldn’t move his body. The voice returned, “Don’t you dare.” Any attempt Kohaku made was thwarted by this unknown entity that demanded he continue living this wretched life. Nothing but a broken young man, Kohaku decided to change his fate by becoming something good, something respectable. He enrolled at Shino Academy. His short time at the academy was helpful, but mostly nurtured an intense rivalry between himself and a young guy named Yuuki Koizumi. The two were more often than not in shouting matches, dueling each other when away from prying eyes, and choosing each other for spars to prove that one was superior.

It was near the end of his second year when some arrogant bastard decided to pick a fight with Kohaku over losing “to a girl.” Unsure of who the fat bitch meant, he tried ignoring him, but was pushed to the ground. Kohaku’s retaliation was the drawing of his asauchi and a duel in the middle of school grounds. As the crowd gathered, Kohaku fought his opponent fiercely, but wasn’t much of a match against the sixth year. When his opponent over his eyes, Kohaku’s inability to see put him on the defensive. He tried wiping the blood away, but it kept blinding him. He ended up on his back and as his opponent’s sword came down, Kohaku blacked out.

The voice he heard was haunting, deep, and menacing. Every word it spoke to him corroded Kohaku’s will. It felt like the threat of death was looming behind him with a poisoned dipped blade at the base of his skull. Kohaku couldn’t think, he couldn’t move, and he couldn’t breathe. This old entity had somehow become strong enough to terrify him. Ten seconds was all it took. Kohaku watched in horror as Goichi was brutalized by a body he could no longer control, and when he turned on other students. Willingly giving over control left him a witness. When the monster was done and students were dead or gravely injured, Kohaku fled.

There was no point in trying again; they would never accept him. He knew the law, but had no interest in spending his life in prison. Kohaku took his asuachi and fled before anyone could realize what had happened. Luckily, the incident was in the evening, when most students and teachers left, otherwise it would have been much worse. Kohaku returned to his life as a thug on the streets, hiding from Shinigami. He was alone at first, but kept trickling in and out of gangs, using people for shelter and food until he was able to pack up and move on.

While allying with a gang called “The White Raven Syndicate,” Kohaku ended up on a job that put him up against a man named Sozen Katagiri, a man who seemed much more interested in Kohaku’s life story than fighting. Though Kohaku continued to battle with Sozen, he found himself answering questions out of respect for the man’s swordsmanship. Unfortunately, never being able to land a hit, even after years of practice, Kohaku became angry and got more forceful, more angry, and it happened again. In the midst of pushing himself to the limit, and trying to fight the voice off, Kohaku blacked out. That dark entity overwhelmed him and took control, making him feel like nothing more than a passenger in his own body. Barely able to focus, he could not regain control no matter how much he tried. When Kohaku woke, he was laying in a strange place being taken care of by a beautiful woman. Sozen and his leader, Tsubine Shirazumi entered his room and offered him a place to stay in exchange for putting his skills to good use.

In the beginning, working under Tsubine and Sozen, as a member of the Shirazumi-Rengokai, was not too different than any normal job one would expect a teenager to have. He helped out at different establishments by unloading and loading merchandise, he helped collect funds from businesses that Tsubine owned, and helped manage and clean the group’s training grounds. In watching the other members train, Kohaku became fascinated and got himself into some classes with permission from Sozen. It wasn’t much different than his time at the Academy. The “older” students that were there longer really enjoyed taunting him.

When his first fight broke out, Sozen was quick to handle it. He barely got a strike off against his opponent and never had the time to get mad enough to possibly black out. However, the pattern continued. He fought and fought, always being pulled out of fights or kicking someone’s ass. He got a few warnings about controlling his anger, but decided to quit since the others were being allowed to mess with him. Walking through one of the training rooms, he was cornered by a couple of guys he had already fought before. Since Sozen wasn’t there, as per usual when they approached him, the inevitable happened and they ended up fighting.

In the middle of their fight, Kohaku landed a good blow that stunned one of them, but it opened him up to an attack from behind. The strike was painful, but he kept on his feet and attacked back. Two versus one wasn’t doing him well and his anger was taking hold. As he felt it coming, he tried fighting it off, which let them land two hits on him. It pissed him off more, so his vision began to darken and that voice spoke up, “Don’t worry, I’ll do it for you.” Right before the world was gone, Tsubine came into view and something snapped him back. He took a hit to the head and fell to the ground. “Let me guess; Sozen isn’t here to babysit you idiots.”

When Kohaku woke up again, he was informed that he was something called a “vizard.” For the first time, someone explained to him what it was like when he blacked out. He became cruel, ruthless, and gained a mask with horns on it. His reiatsu would become unstable and he was very difficult to handle, especially for the other students. From that point on, Kohaku was required to train in order to stay in control when his inner hollow wanted to put the mask on. Session after session, Kohaku blacked out continuously. It felt like it was his inner hollow becoming stronger, until one day something flipped and Kohaku was able to rip off his mask.

These intense training sessions continued, but the blackouts lessened as Kohaku struggled with his inner hollow. After a while, and with helpful advice from Tsubine Shirazumi, the blackouts ceased, and he was strong enough to hold his own in most fights. The relationship with his inner hollow became a rivalry, where Kohaku constantly had to up his game. If he didn’t up his game, or if Kohaku did not participate in a battle his inner hollow approved of, the chance of being taken over was greater, but all he could do from there was move on with his life.

Over the last two decades, Kohaku worked as security for different gambling houses and businesses that the Shirazumi-Rengokai owned. Life was routine until the demon incursions on Soul Society. During which time, Kohaku was victorious in combat with multiple demons, including a powerful one that called itself Cryx. This demon pushed Kohaku into choosing to use his vizard abilities in combat for the first time. When the battle was over, the building he was protecting collapsed, but the people were gone, Kohaku passed out under the wreckage. But he won.

Later rescued from the rubble, he spent a few weeks in the infirmary at the Shirazumi-Rengokai headquarters. During his stay, Kohaku was informed of the losses the Renkogaki took, particularly the wife of Tsubine Shirazumi. Their relationship was always resembled this bratty younger brother and over protective big sister, so Kohaku was devastated. What was worse was seeing Tsubine, a guy that Kohaku had come to look up to, fall into the darkness of his own despair. Even though his daughter had made it through fine, Tsubine couldn’t function.

Over the next few years, Kohaku supported Tsubine by taking over a few operations he was trusted with, allowing him to feel at home and loyalty toward the Rengokai. Kohaku handled bigger security issues, continued with inventory and merchandise, and started the hiring and firing of different employees, mainly under the supervision of Sozen. Now that things are settling down and seemingly getting back to normal, a lot of his responsibilities are too. However, he has recently noticed a strange… presence in their District and has plans to investigate it.

I. Natural Abilities

» Natural Abilities:

Impressive Reiryoku Reserves: Even if not the most skilled shinigami, a notable trait of Kohaku’s is the amount of energy he has. The well of reiryoku he can call on allows for increased endurance, letting him fight for longer periods of time.

Pole-arm Mastery: Though he is proficient with a regular sword, his focus is on using pole-arms. So, he can successfully enter combat with any weapons like a spear, lance, or pike. Kohaku utilizes these types of weapons with his agility and strength, allowing him to pull of feats like: using the weapon to lift him above his opponent, keeping an opponent at ranges their sword can’t reach, or striking faster by using both ends of the weapon. His preferred method is to trip his opponents, so once they are on their back, he can land a final devastating blow.

Strength: Kohaku is a fighter who utilizes his strength more than his other physical abilities. The use of his spear in the way that he fights requires him to be able to use his weapon to deal devastating blows. He also has the capability of throwing his spear and embedding it in a concrete wall at long distances. When he uses his full strength to strike something, it’s like getting hit by something like a tank.

I. Racial Abilities

» Racial Abilities:

Zanjutsu: As a former student of Shino Academy, Kohaku’s knowledge of how to gain power from his zanpakuto led him to training in order to gain his shikai, and possibly later his bankai. Kohaku makes sure that he allots time for bonding with his zanpakuto. He has done this since leaving Shino Academy, but has hyper focused on it in recent years, as way of keeping his inner hollow under his control.

Hoho, Specifically Shunpo: Kohaku uses shunpo to make up for his average speed. It is his main way of getting around the battlefield, repositioning himself for better strikes, and even confusing or overwhelming his opponents. Because of the structure of the Rukongai, he does not use shunpo to cover long distances, but instead rapidly bursts through short distances to create effects like speed clones. However, Kohaku’s proficiency in shunpo has allowed him to pull off unexpected attacks at wild angles, including above and below the opponent. Kohaku’s shunpo is accurate, and and he can pull off a large number without becoming winded.
  • Tri-Image Shunpo: Kohaku creates three speed clone images in a triangle formation around the opponent by pushing his speed to the limit. This ability is used to confuse an opponent, making it difficult to pick up where the attack will be coming from. Kohaku can only keep this up for two posts before needing to slow down. Kohaku can use this ability a max of two times in one thread.

I. Zanpakuto

» Zanpakutō Name: Seiryuenko [Green Dragon Fair Blade, 青龍豔鋸]

» Zanpakutō Spirit: Seiryuenko is a ruthless and impatient zanpakuto spirit with tunnel-vision and determination. She focuses on punishing traitors, murderers, and manipulators, the real dregs of society. With the mindset of a hardened soldier, her mission is of utmost importance. She’s also tactical and precise in every move she makes. In regards to her bond with Kohaku, they see each other as partners, the kind to die in a trench together. However, there are certain merciless tendencies Seiryuenko has that put the two of them at odds.

[Spirit Class 8 | Hazard D] Kohaku Okumura Kohaku_ZanSpirit_Opt

» Inner World: Kohaku’s inner world is a large expanse of tightly spaced buildings with dozens of thin alleys. Though not perfectly, it is a representation of buildings he remembers in the Rukongai, including the Shirazumi-Rengokai, the building that collapsed in his fight with Cryx, multiple old gang spots he enjoyed being in, and even training areas at Shino Academy. It’s have very little detail and every building is the same green color as his reiryoku, but it caters to his method of fighting.

» Sealed Zanpakutō Appearance:

I. Shikai

» Shikai Release Phrase: Perforate

» Shikai Release Action: Kohaku holds his zanpakuto out in front of him with the tip of the blade to the floor. As he calls out for his shikai, he shoves the blade into the ground, summoning the spears seen in his shikai image.

» Shikai Appearance:

[Spirit Class 8 | Hazard D] Kohaku Okumura KohakuZanShikai

» Shikai Abilities: Kohaku’s shikai summons 6 spears that look ethereal and ghostly in nature, but are completely solid until they come into contact with someone’s body in a manner that would normally injure them. When this happens, they become incorporeal and vanish by sinking into the person’s body, but they do zero damage. Kohaku can tear out each of these spears from the opponents body by calling out the phrase “rend.” This has an effect that shreds the opponent’s body as 100 small needles explode from within them. With each stacked spear, the number of “needles” doing damage increases by 50%. For a spear to successfully enter an opponent, their durability must be equal to or lower than Kohaku’s zanjutsu, otherwise they behave like normal spears. Extra spears cannot be summoned without re-sealing Kohaku’s shikai first. While spears are inside the opponent, there is a faint green glow emanating from the spots where the spears entered. The oldest spear within an opponent expires every 3 posts. Kohaku is required to have at least 2 spears to “rend” before he can use the ability.

I. Vizard Information

» Inner Hollow Name: Kuroki

» Inner Hollow: Kuroki is a tall insect-like, humanoid, hollow that stands around seven feet tall. It’s slender frame is a hint to its speed and agility. The dark black and green “scale-like” hierro that covers its entire body protects it from harm by giving it a large durability boost. This monster has spikes all over its hierro, making it difficult to attack him physically without taking damage yourself. With four glowing, slit-like eyes that work separately from each other, he sees everything in a 180 degree angle, and his peripheral goes extends that to 225 degrees. Kuroki has four arms with talon-like hands he uses to slit open his enemies. And finally, he has a fourteen foot long prehensile tail that he shoots his cero from. Kuroki is an aggressive creature that has the instincts of a primal hunter. The being hates stagnation, so he pushes Kohaku to give him a taste of “the hunt,” or any intense battle, otherwise threatens to take him over with the intent to cause damage to whatever Kohaku cares for. This is his way of punishing him for being weak.

» Inner Hollow Powers:

Acid Secreting Tail: Constantly “smoking” from his tail is an acid like substance that corrodes whatever it touches. It can eat through hierro and other substances whose durability would be up to one step above Kohaku’s hollow control.

Acidic Cero: Similar to the acidic substance that is always secreting from his tail, when Kuroki uses cero, his bright green reiryoku has the same acidic effect as listed above. Kuroki can only fire cero off from the tip of his tail.

Immense Speed: Kuroki’s speed is immense, which is why Kohaku has such a hard time fighting against him. Kuroki’s speed is always 100% greater then Kohaku’s. However, his strength is also always 100% less than Kohaku’s.

» Hollow Mask Appearance:
[Spirit Class 8 | Hazard D] Kohaku Okumura Kohaku_Mask

» Vizard Powers:

Speed and Strength Increase:
While his mask is on, Kohaku gains a 50% increase to both speed and strength.

Reiryoku Change:
The emerald green reiatsu becomes lime green. His reiatsu is unstable and instead of feeling like pressure, it feels like little small hairs are running over the skin.
