His head hurt, so much went on in his dreams. He'd been wounded or maybe that wasn't correct either. His eyes opened slowly, revealing those burning eyes. His grey skin was cracked in many places looking like a human. His eyes were black with glowing yellow almost like the sun in the sky.

His frame hurt still as though coming from a dream. The world around him felt bleak, no it felt empty. As though something was missing from it all. Pushing pieces of earth off his body he got him. His outfit was trashed but he looked as though he'd been buried alive.

He survived something, but what that was something escaping him. What was missing, he reached around his body now. Touching his torso and face softly. Feelings a mask and very much alive. His fingernails were black as he tried to get his senses. Where was this place in the desert with sand for miles?

He didn't feel hungry or thirst, no he felt no need for anything. It all felt meaningless and pointless. In fact, why did he come out of the ground anyway? Shouldn't he have just stayed there? His body felt sore and aching but no limbs were missing.

A strange hole was in his chest where his heart should have been. It was strange to be missing that piece of himself. He gently reached and put his hand in the hole. Feeling to see if it was real or not.

He'd of felt fear or anxiety normally wouldn't he if he felt something like that? Questions poured into his mind faster than he could answer them all. Hastur was the name he found on a wrist band.

It was written across the brown band that was crumbling only leaving the tarnished metal plate behind. Gripping it with strands of leather fabric there. He slipped it into his pocket. Saying the name in his head a few more times. Trying to remember the name.

It was important that he have something, a name to go off of. He sat down now not in a hurry to leave the spot he woke up. In the Deserts outside of Las Vegas. He slept for who knows how long. It all felt fragmented and empty. There was a place in the distance.

But it seemed destroyed or abandoned, what was this location? It seemed people used to live in that zone. But he couldn't remember or think clearly. Every time he tried to picture or press the issue. Pain silenced the inquires inside his mind. It hurt to push, everything was foggy and his body felt strange.

He didn't feel alive in the sense that a human would. He was human before he woke up here. Was this what happened when people died in this world? Did they become like him and break? How pointless and utterly meaningless it was to live then. If life leads to this result what was the purpose of it?

At least they were all equally tended to in that sense. That was the most important thing was equality. Why did he feel strongly about that, did his kind whatever they wore have that?

Did they have rights or anything resembling them? He couldn't know as he sat on the stone pondering. His thoughts consuming him, but they felt meaninglessly as well. Why did it all feel so bland and unimportant?

What was the meaning behind all of this, why did he survive that abandoned place? Or why did he die, did it even matter. No one wept for him or tried to find him. Obviously given his clothing and hair he'd been left beneath the rubble in the desert sands for dead.

So why was he even here?

From a distance, squatting on a pile of rocks and rubble, two icy-blue eyes were watching the Hollow that dug himself up from what had looked like a shallow grave. Hee seemed to be alone. The eyes continued to observe.

It was, once again, a search for answers, or at least some clues, to the attacks in Rukongai. Again she had expected to come back home empty handed. Each time when she had tried to find some Hollow that could give her intel about the attackers, and the names on her list, she either had been totally unable to get a hold of one, or it refused to talk, no matter how she tried to persuade it. It was utterly frustrating and a bit worrying. Until now, she had been the only one that had encountered these Hollows. A few people she had told claimed to believe her, but she wasn't so sure how long, if at all, that would last without any evidence that her story was true.

Today she had been on the field for less than an hour, when she stumbled across this specimen down there. Ot was seemingly isolated, not a single other than him in sight.

After some sensing, she could tell that the Hollow was relatively weak. It didn't mean he wasn't dangerous, oh no, but at least he didn't seem to be menos-class.

She straightened up. There was a chance that this one could be coerced to talk to her. In a swish of air, the Shinigami vanished from her vantage point.

Less than a heartbeat later she reappeared behind the Hollow. Her left hand was on the sheath of her katana, which was already loosened, but not yet drawn. Other than that she remained outwardly relaxed.

"Good day." She said politely. "I would very much like to have a quiet talk to you. My name is Hanako Yamada. What is yours?"

Now to wait and see how the Hollow would react.

His instincts screamed danger when she came closer. But he decided to ignore them on this occasion. His eyes looked at her confused almost like seeing her for the first time. He was indeed weak, weaker than most. He fell below the cracks of the modern hollows.

It took an astonishing effort to accomplish things others did easily. "Did you do this?" He asked looking around at the ruin and debris. Showing the signs of his memory loss as he could feel it.

He held his head wincing a bit as he tried to remember. He couldn't part the fog in the shores of his mind. It was still far too difficult for him to clear the road. "Hastur...that's my name...I think." He said through his gritted teeth.

It was painful to try and part the fog of his mind and so he finally stopped. His eyes looking back towards the scene. Something was there, it had been important. He felt a pang of sadness in his chest.

He couldn't explain what made him feel this way or why it felt important to him. His eyes stayed on her as he knew he looked rough. His clothing was disheveled and lacked any sort of touch hollows here we known for.

Could she have wrought this much destruction and devastation, he wasn't sure. But he knew for a fact killing him wouldn't make her any effort. He lacked the power that others had.

She was above him in that sense and truthfully her blade could likely cut him down easily. His instincts still screamed warning symbols like fire trucks in his mind. But he was weary and knew he couldn't outrun her. It was simply not possible for him to do it. He just couldn't accomplish that feat at this moment. He just wasn't fast enough. In many sense of the word, speed was a lacked feature.

His body sat down on a rock slowly, it still hurt to move. The stiffness with a long sleep being slowly shaken off. Still sand and other such remaining things fell off him in the shifting positions.

The question that remained and screamed inside him, was she the one who destroyed this place? Was the person who did it nearby or someone he could feel out? If so maybe seeking them out to avenge the city was the choice. He couldn't find his memories sitting in this desert.

Maybe this woman, this being was the key to remembering something anything of what happened.

Hanako Yamada

The question the Hollow asked left Hanako dumbfounded for a moment. It roused mixed feelings in her mind. One of them, and that concerned her a little, was feeling flattered that this one named Hastur deemed her strong enough.

On the other hand she neither knew how good a Hollow's senses were, nor did Hastur seem particularly fit at the moment. On the contrary, he made the impression that he had been run over. Also, and this really astonished her, Hastur seemed genuinely concerned and distraught. It was much different from every true-blooded Hollow she'd ever met in person.

With a soft yet audible click Hanako fastened her sword in the sheath again, although she remained wary.

"No...no, I didn't do this. I just arrived a short while ago."

She held up her hands, palms outward.

"I won't harm you, if I don't have to." She said making clear that, despite having fully resheathed her sword, she was still willing and able to defend herself.
In a little corner of her mind the voice of reason held up a little index-finger and began a short lecture. Although Hanako was reasonably shure to be able to handle Hastur one-on-one, at least until she could get away, she had no idea what his abilities were and knew that this was dangerous. It was best not to tell anyone in Soul Society that she had actually confronted a Hollow alone, instead of just scouting.

"I am here on an...investigation." she hoped the little hesitation hadn't been audible.
"Really just looking to talk to you. There is some information I need, which you maybe could provide."

Her voice was calm and honest. There was maybe a healthy distrust and caution towards a potentially dangerous stranger in it, yet no hatred could be heard. Despite the attack a while back and her duties as Shinigami, which sometimes involved Hollow-hunting, she felt no resentment against the Hollows as a species.

He didn't know what to make of the situation entirely. She'd not done this, who'd done this dead and caused so much damage? That was the question of the day in reality. Was who'd destroyed that place and why did he feel sadness for it? He wasn't like her that was certain but at the same time.

He didn't feel connected to anything else either. His body didn't ache with hunger as others did. If anything he felt peaceful and serene. Hearing the click of the sword made his body flinch. That sound unnerved him for some reason, his hands trembled for a moment.

Before they settled down again, his body remembered something. Something he'd forgotten to the sands of time. What was it that had been important, so much so he forgot?

"Investigate? Who did this?" His voice sounded hopeful since he did want that information himself. But what certainty was there that it lined up. He didn't know anymore and his memories were fractured at best. At worst he couldn't see past the fog of his mind.

His eyes looked at her as he readied himself for questions. It would hurt to push, but he'd try his best. To try and help her because she asked him too. He didn't need a real reason, all he'd done was lay in a desert asleep for who knows how long.

His desire to see her and his quests brought to conclusions are what would be his drive at the moment. He had no other purpose, nothing that flashed before him in neon. He felt no hunger, nor a need for any form of the soul like other hollows. He simply had no desire for them.

He desired only to know why this place was meaningful to him, and who he was that had been forgotten.

"I'll answer to the best of my abilities. "

After short consideration Hanako took a seat on a stone opposite of Hastur. They were sitting about two meters apart, looking at each other.

"No, I am afraid not." She said, her words sounding flat.
"My duties lie elsewhere."

She shot a glance at the destroyed landscape. Something of this scale was way beyond her paygrade.

"What I am looking for is information about…"

She hesitated. Could she admit that some Hollows had infiltrated Rukongai. Maybe she could get around telling everything. She still didn't know who Hastur really was. Then again, Hollows have managed to intrude into Soul Society for millennia and it was widely known.

"...about a group of Hollows that have infiltrated Soul Society lately. There are at least three of them, but maybe even as many as six. That rings any bells?"

She was thinking about the list, on which were six names. She had it on her. She always had it on her. Maybe she'd show it to Hastur, but not yet. It depended on his answer.

His head ached as he looked at the destruction again himself. It bothered him to see this, but what was his connection? He didn't have any ideas about that, he listened to her request. Taking in the details as he felt deflated. She didn't know about what happened here. But information deserved a good turn.

Information was what she sought but what was it about. Some hollows had gotten into the Soul Society, that was a reckless idea. His mind hurt more as he tried to piece together that location. It was all fragments and pieces of a puzzle. People who'd infiltrated the Soul Society.

It felt familiar but that fog in his mind made it hard. It was like trying to pull together pieces. "I don't...remember, it feels familiar..Like I've heard it somewhere. Maybe a rumor, but ahh.." His hands went to his head. Signs of pain as he winced gripping both sides of his skull.

It felt like a drill was piercing through his mind. Cutting into the depths trying to find relevant information. But at every turn, it was nothing but darkness. He just couldn't remember, his name felt fuzzy and he was born with that. The only thing he had to remember off of, was the bits and pieces. The fragments of his memory reflected in broken glass.

His digits clenched tufts of his hair trying to get a glimpse but unabloe to do so. "I'm sorry, I just...can't remember anything."

Hanako was silent for a moment. Hastur really seemed to be in pain. Bit what could she do? She was no medic. She wouldn't even be able to treat a Shinigami or human, much less a Hollow.

"You really don't look so good." She said with a bit of concern in her voice. She thought about his claim, not being able to remember. It was kind of her speciality.
"Maybe you shouldn't try to force anything. Just relax for a moment."

'And maybe we should also leave this place' she thought as she looked around. It was evident that the Hollow had some kind of connection to this place. In general, he wasn't what she'd expect from one of his kind. In her textbook Hollows, especially of the lower tiers, were primarily driven by their hunger. It was, as far as she knew, normal and was needed for their development. This one, however, didn't seem hungry. At least he didn't make any move to chew on Hanako. To be fair, the ones she had met in Rukongai hadn't done that either, but she suspected it wasn't for a lack of hunger. Hastur here...he could almost be a normal soul, a plus, if it weren't for the hole and the mask.

For a second she wondered what would happen, if she slashed his mask with her sword. Would he also be reborn as the plus he was before, washed clean from his sins and existence as a Hollow? Was there even anything to wash him clean from? Was there a plus he could return to? Better not try. He hadn't given her any reason to attack him yet, actually quite the opposite.

"Maybe if you would try to take it step by step. Like… your body. You look like you have been attacked. I saw you unbury yourself. But there's no one else around. So maybe it was from whatever did this. But you don't have anything to go on, so just put it aside for the moment. Don't try to grab something that isn't there."

What a strange feeling. As if she was one of the shrinks talking to herself, only a few years back. Well, not completely. Hastur had something she didn't.

"Start with what you have. You remember a name, don't you? Hastur. That is a start. You still know how to walk, how to speak. That is also good. Now, go from what you have. If you just think about your name, maybe this sparks some other memories. Again, don't force it, if it causes you pain."

It hadn't worked for Hanako, back then, but maybe it would work for Hastur. In a way he was better off than she had been. She would have been grateful for a name. Hell, she would have been grateful for the headache when she tried to remember. But for her there was simply... nothing. For the moment, her questions were forgotten.

He listened to her words, as he pondered if something was wrong with him. Others of his species would have attacked or done something. He had no interest in her or anything else as food. It didn't concern him or entice him even a little bit. His gaze shifted looking at himself trying to figure something out. He'd been buried under debris and other such appliances. Nothing remained that would give him back his memories.

This place was significant, it held meaning for his species. It was important in some way, he just couldn't put a finger on what. His eyes caught a glimpse of his palms noticing they were strange. Small holes in the middle of his palms, what were they for? Had he been experimented on before he lost his memories? No, these felt normal so much so he thought nothing of them.

"I, think..I'm abnormal, since...I lack..something other hollows have.. but. I just can't remember."

He lacked semblance of that negative drive and hunger that hollows had. It wasn't there, he slowly extended his arm. Trying to see what would happen, if anything came from those tubes. He breathed a sigh, giving up on the idea they meant anything. It came and startled him at that moment, a high pitched screech like scrapping from his palm that came out.

It wasn't loud unless you were in front of the palm, the dirt and earth looked disturbed. But nothing significant had happened. It had startled the hollow making him fall on his back. Quickly sitting up he checked on her, with concern in his voice.

"Are you alright Miss? I'm so sorry, I didn't know they did that? It didn't hurt you did it?" He was looking her over making sure she was fine, despite the palm being pointed away from her. It was still startling, jarring even for him. He didn't know what he'd done. It shocked him and left him confused for a moment.

She seemed unharmed his hand coming up to his head. Though a bit leery of his own palm. Concerned it might try to blast his own head off. Showing just how unaware he was of his body. So from what he could decipher of that, it seemed to release sounds.

But only when he wanted to with something else, it was just too distant yet. Hastur didn't have anything to go on or work with. Maybe asking questions to find things out would be good. But where could he go, people didn't like his species much. That and they were very careful.

"I..could ask around...somewhere, I..just don't know where I could go though.." He said unsure of his surroundings and much of anything at this moment.

Remarkably even Hastur himself had noticed that something about himself was different.

“Well...you haven’t tried to nibble on me, yet.” Hanako said and smiled her crooked, unsure smile, but gave it up quickly. It had to be apparent, even to the amnesiac Hastur, that Hanako had tried to make a joke and failed miserably. Even the Hollow was in considerably better shape than her sense of humor.

“Sorry. But it is true: Most Hollows are somewhat controlled by a hunger for souls. Usually for human souls, but they also eat Shinigami and others. Some of them appear to be barely conscious. You are different, it seems.”

Hanako jumped at the sound bursting from Hastur’s palm. She also had noticed the strange holes, but hadn’t given them any further thought. So, she had been right about one thing: Hastur was far more dangerous than he appeared on first glimpse. But then again his concern for the Shinigami was so completely out of character for everything she knew of pureblood Hollows until now.

“I am okay, don’t worry.” she said, making an appeasing gesture.
“It seems you have found out a bit more about yourself.” she added thoughtfully.

She sat back down on her rock. Now, what should she do? It became quite obvious that Hastur probably wouldn't regain his memory in the near future. It wasn't his fault, although it was frustrating to her all the same. It looked like there was no more reason for her to stay...but could she just leave? The Hollow seemed to be not a bad person and in his current condition vulnerable, although far from helpless.

"It is okay, don't worry about that." She said in a tone more cheerful than she felt.
"But what about you? Do you have anywhere to go? Anywhere safe? Or do you...did live here?"

She regretted the last words almost immediately. If he really did live here, then his home was flattened. And maybe it really had been a home and not just a hunting ground. She really started to believe it.

Feeling like a heavy weight inside her pocket was still the piece of paper with the six names on it. She wanted to show it to him, still hoping it would spark some memories. But she was unsure if it was any use or if Hastur really was in no shape to help her with any information. She decided to still hold it back for the moment.
