Reports are in, revealing a shocking amount of activity on the world of living: Earth. Due to such, patrols being sent down to Earth have increased by a large margin. This situation is just another of many, but this particular patrol raised specific concerns from intel. Multiple pings of Hollow activity in this particular area proved interesting enough, but it was the weak signatures of the multitude of spiritual presences that made this area high risk. No fatalities have been reported, and the signatures disappear at a specific time every night. It is almost like the Hollow are simply scouting the area.

The area in question, a small town in Sweden that would normally have nothing of interest for anyone. This sudden occurrence in such a small town left the Gotei to believe that something easy to look over may yet be found, and it is for that reason that they feel obliged to find it first before the Hollow. That is why two operatives have been sent down to investigate in any means they see fit. The senkaimon that opened dropped them off at night in the middle of town airspace, 30 minutes before the Hollows are scheduled to appear and begin their suspicious activity.

IRA HOLYFIELD

Man, it was cold up here. Like, real cold. Ira hadn't ever been this far north, he was a man of the sea, down south where it was warm! Bundling up only worked so well, and he'd had a little trouble finding something warm enough for him to stay comfortable while still giving him a good range of motion for training. But hey, the cold was supposed to be good for you, so Ira just pulled up his collar as he walked into town. Sun was already down, but he'd do fine.

"Ah, geez, now where do I even go from here..."

Wandering the streets of this small Swedish town wasn't exactly ideal for Ira, admittedly. He'd have liked to find an inn, but the trip here took longer than he'd planned. Worst came to worst, he could always camp out, start a big fire to warm up. Better to actually look around town first though, even if he seemed to be the only person awake and walking the streets at this hour.

With a woosh a diminutive figure clad entirely in black descended from a great portal in the sky. They dropped through silent air and landed softly on the roof of a small structure at the center of a sleeping Swedish town. Another figure dropped from the dimensional tear and landed but a few feet from the first. The initial traveler turned toward their compatriot before the two had a short conversation agreeing to split up in order to cover more ground. Afterward they dropped onto the street, revealing the figure to be a small blonde-haired and golden-eyed woman in a black kimono with a sword at her hip. Her name was Morikawa Mizu, a Shinigami of Soul Society's military force, here in this foreign land to investigate reports of Hollow activity, her people's prey.

Suddenly the woman realized just how cold it was in this part of the living realm and began rubbing her slender hands together. "Usually I enjoy the intrigue and critical thinking involved with a Hollow investigation...but why does it have to be so cold!" she said, her gentle voice falling on the deaf ears of the sleeping village like snowfall. She knew the chances of someone even being able to hear, much less see, her in a quaint town like this would be slim at best given her lack of a Gigai. Mizu turned and observed her surroundings, much of which consisted of modest homes with small personal gardens and pebble-strewn roads blanketed in darkness. Which bothered her greatly.

"Why would Hollows be scouting a place like this? Hmm...there are so few people to prey on, and it isn't within the territory of anyone sympathetic to their race." As she finished speaking aloud to no one in particular Mizu closed her eyes and focused intently on the area around her. "I don't sense any great Spiritual presences either. What could be the reason...?" she wondered to herself. Deciding standing around doing was helping her naught, the blonde Shinigami began walking in the direction opposite of her compatriot, following what appeared to be a main street, and continued pondering the situation she found herself in.

The small town slept, of course, nights proving quiet for this particular area of the world. However, that did not mean that all committed to such rigorous schedules. People who work late, some outgoers, and maybe a tourist or two continued to roam, doing as they do. This simply made the Shinigami's job harder due to the sensitivity of these late-night people. The world had long since become capable of making note of the reapers, and many understood the reason why Mizu would be appearing so suddenly as she had. Wanting nothing to do with it, they all did their best to stay out of her way. Ira would only find luck getting directions towards a small hotel that existed somewhat away from the center of town. It seems people are insistent on the fact that tourists shouldn't get too rooted in the heart of the small town for some odd reason.

Mizu would find herself not seeing anything of note as she moved through the town, her teammate proving just as lost in what they're looking for. They have no description of what they're after and are relying solely on the Hollows appearing once more as they did before, but for some odd reason, the Hollows haven't showed as initially proposed. Their search would continue to take them further from the center of town into the less populated areas, the same areas that Ira would find herself heading towards. Out here, there are even less people out, and these people seem a bit unusual then the norm.

IRA HOLYFIELD

Mm... Well, this place was just a little bit less friendly than he might have liked, but Ira couldn't exactly just teleport himself somewhere else. Walking down the main road toward the outskirts like he'd been directed, he blew into his hands to warm them up a little as night continued to cool the air even further. He'd definitely need to get settled soon, whether that meant camping or actually finding an inn. As he walked, though, he eventually spotted a young lady in a shihakusho. Gotei folks around here, eh? Well, maybe she'd be helpful for his current situation.

"Evenin', young lady! Surprised to see someone out this late, but I guess it's probably easier doing any Hollow hunting when people aren't out, eh?" Ira's way of speaking, emblematic of his age, certainly clashed with his young and decidedly girlish appearance, but he'd just gotten used to that by now. "Don't suppose you've got any ideas of an alright place to stay for the night? Little cold out here."

It occurred to Ira only after he'd said it that the girl could probably take that as flirting, but he definitely hadn't meant it like that. This cold was just getting real biting, and he knew these shinigami stayed down here for a long time sometimes. Maybe she had a camp or a hotel room already.

MORIKAWA MIZU

Some details about this secluded town nestled in Scandinavia were beginning to perturb Mizu. Thus far in her investigation, three things stood out to her: First, this was past the time Hollows were expected to make an appearance, especially odd given how consistent they had been according to reports; Second, while Mizu knew some people still couldn't sense spirits, there was no reason for everyone in this town to act like they couldn't, going so far as to avoid even looking in her direction; Third, as she moved away from the town's center those around her grew even icier and more suspicious. Mizu kept one hand tight on the weapon at her hip as her gaze continued scanning her surroundings, wary for anything out of the ordinary.

At this time the blond Shinigami came across what appeared to be a young woman. Her eyes widened as the stranger spoke. This person sounds nothing like a young lady! Taken aback a bit, Mizu figured maybe that was just how things were this far north in the living world and looked up at the girl as she spoke "I'm here on official Gotei business, miss. I'm sorry to say but I don't have a room...are you not from around here? Are you lost? Do you need help finding your family? Ah! I apologize for the barrage of questions, miss." Then, to herself, she thought Must stay focused!

Cold. That's all there is to their environment, in both aspects. Not only were the absent winds chilling to the bone, but the people gave off nothing but nasty mojo towards the two. Their sudden acquaintance made it seem that they were the only two people in the world, and that was more than just a mere statement. As they talked, one could swear the streets had cleared and left them all alone. It's almost as if everyone had simply disappeared, not even footsteps or whispers allowed to exist. Mizu may be occupied with worrying about Ira, but she'll find another thing to stress over.

Suddenly, the phone in her pocket would go off, it's other function as a Hollow tracking turning on. Loud beeps echoed in the hollow streets, multiple dots covering the phone's screen as it told of multiple hostile targets everywhere. It seemed that they're literally on top of her, but the next second as her own personal alarms may go off, that beeping stopped, and all the dots on her screen vanished. Then, one remained, leading far from their spot to another part of town. That's when she'd hear her partner's voice through her device.

"MORIKAWA! MORIKAWA! Target sighted! It's-" Silence.

IRA HOLYFIELD

"Nah, nothin' like that, just a traveler, looking for a decent place to stay so I get get a little training done. And it's mister, not miss, don't let the body fool ya. Long story."

Ira would have been glad to be a little more specific about that situation, typically, but he'd been around the block enough to know when things were getting a little suspicious, and the fact that the streets were totally empty now didn't entirely escape his notice. Even if it had, though, the beeping of Mizu's hollow radar would've caught anyone's attention, and that was to say nothing of the message that blared through it.

"Well little lady, hope you don't mind if I help you out tonight. Wouldn't quite feel right leaving you to handle whatever's about to happen."

Call it an old man's intuition, but he wasn't exactly confident that whatever was about to happen in this town would be too pleasant. Ira's whole body tensed as he readied to fight, spiritual energy coursing through his muscles as he readied himself to fight. He was ready to follow Mizu, or just to guard her from any sudden Hollow appearances, at a moment's notice.

MORIKAWA MIZU

Though confused by the young woman's response, a loud BEEP BEEP rang out from Mizu's Shihakusho and interrupted her thoughts. Her face suddenly turned grave when she got a good look as to why: Her Denreishinki's display showed a multitude of Hollows converging on their location. In a flash she had her Zanpakuto drawn and was scanning the surrounding buildings for any hint of an enemy, her back to Ira to stand guard in front of her.

Bracing for impact, Mizu prepared to release her Zanpakuto's Shikai as a necessary armament against the sheer number of blips on her radar. But just as soon as her spirit phone had begun it's emergency call, the area fell under a silent hush as if nothing had happened. Suddenly her Gotei ally shouted through the Danereishinki, clearly attempting to warn her of the alert's source, but he was cut off prematurely after barely getting half a message through. All that remained on her spirit phone was a single blip a distance away. Kumagaya-san...!"

Upon Ira declaring their intention to assist, Mizu moved to turn him down when she was taken aback by the spiritual pressure radiating from his feminine body. Fearing for her compatriot's safety she figured there was far more to this stranger than at first glance. "Hai! I am Morikawa Mizu, and as a Seated Officer of the Gotei United, I shall get to the bottom of all this! Please, if you wish to help, follow me!" At this declaration Mizu broke into a dead sprint in the direction of her target Kumagaya-san, I'm coming!"

Through the town the device lead, its signal staying strong as it steadily pinged. The silence over the radio would prove deafening as the empty city provided nothing but the tapping of two set of feet against its old paths. As if building the scene, snow began to fall, slowly dotting the sky with tiny white pull balls. Then, the device pinged, a sudden left required, an alley awaiting them. Darkness befell them as the two walls between them engulfed all light like awaiting jaws. In the dark distance, one could make out something moving, a sudden green light blinking in and out; another device like Mizu's signaling a location.

Then, a light flickered on in the background, streetlamps in this area turning on, revealing a man, slumped over in the building snow. His torn black robes identifying him as his raven-colored bangs covered his heavy head. His left side missing, blood steadily falling onto the white ground, staining it, only his slowing breaths proved he still lived. Both their devices continued beeping, yet nothing's around them, and maybe that's the worst of this scene in a sense.
