ATONEMENT FOR THY SINS
HIME TATSUMIYA
To a human who lived his or her life on earth, time was something of significant focus. If they lacked supernatural abilities and the extended lifespan that came with it, an entire century is likely all they could hope to achieve. To worsen the matter, they had to maintain a great body of health to even reach the threshold of one-hundred years.
Cancer, high blood pressure, sexually-transmitted diseases - various diseases and viruses that could eliminate the likelihood of a long life in an instant. To be here by today, and cut down by tomorrow. By now, need one even mention the difficulty of living in a universe where hollows and soul reapers fought? Demons and Angels?
Life no longer seemed normal anymore. Four-hundred years ago, everything was different. The scale was balanced and if supernatural beings existed, they hardly interfered with the status quo of earth. Now, the scale had tipped over and humans had to deal with the consequences.
To the graceful woman sitting within the office of the first division, overlooking the soul cycle and bringing in humans who died from the aforementioned causes, she could only express humility and gratitude towards how her fortunes had changed in but a year. Once a prisoner, she once believed she deserved execution for her horrific crimes.
Freedom, no... life itself meant so much more to her now. To honor the noble hero who once believed she had the potential to be saved and to honor the woman with a fierce heart who had released her from the maggot's nest, to honor the stalwart of a woman who reunited her with her sister so that they could mend their relationship - she would continue to enjoy the gifts of life, to remain grateful for all the work they had done. And today.. she would celebrate.
And so, she made a request. She had called for a few members of the first division to employ their decorating prowess and renovate her room(which also doubled as her office and workplace) into one where a celebration could be hosted. Her room was large enough that such a feat was a realistic idea. Why let all this empty space go to waste? Tables filled the room, paintings of the finest shinigami who ever fought within the Gotei adorned the walls. The entire setting was beautiful in its simplicity, maintaining enough grace to fill one with awe but not overpoweringly so.
The finest meals one's pallet could ask for were being prepared by both her sister and herself. Hime knew it may have been somewhat foolish to prepare so much - especially so in the event that those she had sent letters to, decided to turn down her invite.. but by now, even if that was the case, it was a trivial notion that hardly shattered her will. After all, it was a celebration of life - of being alive.
Letters and invites had been sent out to those she had befriended residing on earth and the shinigami she had cultivated fine friendships within the soul society.

Hmm… What manner of festivity is this? A letter brought to her by an exasperated Shinigami left the young redhead’s mind bewildered. Doubtful of whether her duties allowed for such a break, the choice of attending or not had filled her mind and left her dreadful for quite some time. However, she’s here, standing before the door of Hime’s room? office? That picky detail doesn’t matter.
She knocks, and then, she walks in. As graceful as a swan, isn’t she? Bleak onyx eyes move here and there without a word, taking in the environment set before her. Painting, tables, food, and a woman all alone admiring her own work. Ah, this is rather festive. Elyss’ lack of emotion doesn’t help brighten the mood. Though, in her own way, she’d flash a small grin. It’s not a happy emotion, but one filled with disdain and annoyance.
“Seems I’m the first to arrive or maybe I’m the only one invited.”
She wishes she wasn’t the first one here. Her mood is far from festive which begs an explanation on why she’d even show up. However, she felt it her responsibility to drop by at least to show that she did somewhat appreciate the offer. She had expected more to be going on however, but it seems the bonds shared by everyone aren't quite enough to warrant they take a break from their daily routine just yet. Everyone around her seemed far more inclined to taking it easy than her. To put it simple, her being the first one here is bizarre in her head. She’s not even dressed for the part, clad in her simple uniform, her hair undone and tangled with bags under her sorrowful eyes.

The Big Woman
Hanako Yamada
With surprise she had received the letter. An invitation to a gathering, a celebration. She had never been invited to such an event.
Her first reflex would have been to turn down the invitation. And the thought really crossed her mind. She still wasn’t a very social person, although she had befriended a few individuals. But a gathering of an unknown number of people...she wouldn’t know how to act.
On the other hand, she wasn’t the same woman she had been a year ago. So much has happened. Maybe she should just accept, go there and see where it leads. Hanako weighed her careful steps out of her self chosen isolation, her few friends, her newfound interest in good, healthy and self prepared food. She decided to accept.
Immediately the next question appeared in her mind. What should she wear? The invitation didn’t say anything about formal wear, so that was one thing. Though she seldom wore it, Hanako did indeed own a formal kimono, but her hips and her bust meant that she always had to stuff her waist and bind her breasts, which was not too comfortable and hot. On the other hand...she had always liked a kimono.
But no, that would probably be a bit much. She got up and opened her wardrobe. Aside from sports wear and the kimono there was nothing much in there...aside from a dress. It was a plain dress she had received a while ago. She took it and held it up, thought about it for a while. It was maybe a bit too plain, even for Hanako's taste, to wear to such an occasion. But it gave her an idea.
Two hours later she came back home with a new purchase, quickly changed into it and then headed out.
When she arrived at Hime's office it wouldn't have surprised her, if Hime wouldn't recognize her. She, the ice queen, always on duty, always in her shihakusho...was wearing a light-colored, flowery dress. She went to a store and the clerk gave her a surprisingly good counsel. She took one look at her, grabbed one dress and handed it to Hanako. She had done some soul-searching if she really should buy it, but in the end it was the dress, she was wearing now.
It was a sleeveless, knee long dress. It was no use to try and conceal her muscular arms and shoulders, so the dress didn't try. On the contrary, the lines complemented it. The waist of the dress was of such make, that it accented her hips. The whole piece flowed so naturally along the lines of Hanako's body as if she had been born in it. Together with that came a matching jacket for outside.
Nevertheless Hanako couldn't help but feel a bit uncomfortable as she stood in Hime's doorway. No, that wasn't the right word. Unaccustomed was the better way to describe it. She felt as if she stood out more than even before and was terribly conscious of how tall she was.
"Good day, Hime." She said and smiled an insecure towards the woman whose lunch she had almost ruined one day. She looked into the room and saw that Elyss was also there and somehow she was happy to see her.
"I hope I'm not too late."

As Hime expected, there were not many guests who had arrived quite yet. There were a light number of low-rank division members who had joined in order to enjoy a break away from their grueling workloads and not much more than that. Hime would serve them without hesitation, allowing them to take a seat in each chair at the table. Stretching her arms out, she smiled at her sister as she wondered if any of her special invitees would be attending. She would take no offense, of course, they certainly had their own business to attend to. However, she would not be able to wonder any longer as one of her invitations had been accepted and the first friend of hers to enter was... Elyss Kishimoto. Admittedly, she had her doubts about Elyss attending such an event. It didn't seem to be in her nature. Even so, she was here now, and would be welcomed with open arms by the graceful shinigami.
Hearing her mumblings of how she was the only person invited had only elicited a soft smile from the mature woman. "Well, that isn't necessarily the intent, Kishimoto-san. I had intended for many others to come but that is a choice wholly of their own make. That said, I am quite happy that you came. It is unexpected to say the least. I'm sorry if you feel awkward about the lack of guests, though. Hopefully some of the lower seats will make their way here."
As if fate had placed yet another surprise before her eyes - standing at the doorway was a very familiar face in a unfamiliar dress. Hanako Yamada. They had not known each other for a long time but certainly enough to form a friendship. Hime would certainly never turn her away if she needed her assistance. Of course, she was awed by how beautiful she looked in her dress. Placing a hand in her mouth, she walked towards Hanako and tapped at her shoulders.
"You look... beautiful, Hanako."
Two familiar faces who just so happened to know one another was quite interesting, indeed. How would today progress?

Unexpected. Tch. Her expression wouldn’t change from its normal placancy. However, she’d not share any words with Hime as she’d leave and place herself someplace distant, a seat that is a bit off from the rest. A part of her had hope she’d not run into anyone familiar here, but fate deemed it necessary to bring another. Her eyes would move to the door seeing Hanako appear, dressed up for the evening. An unexpected sight, surely, the redhead couldn’t help but allow her head to tilt like a confused dog. Hanako is somewhat unrecognizable in such a getup, and she would simply shrug her shoulders at the smile thrown her way and turn her head off towards the wall.
She is truly a woman of little speech. The enjoyment happening around seemed to be avoiding her like she’d infect it like the plague. Maybe it’s just her general distant aura or near impossible to approach expression. She didn’t seem to mind at all, and one may even wonder why she had come. She is wondering the same, finding herself preferring the silence of her room than the happenings about. However, that loneliness… She has her reasons for why she does what she does, even if she doesn’t really understand them.

Some of the insecurities vanished, when Hanako saw Hime's reaction to her new dress, although it confirmed her belief that she indeed stood out even more than before.
In hindsight it was hard to tell why Hanako had bought the dress, why she had felt such a need to have something for such an occasion. Was it because she wanted to be seen as just a woman by others for a change, not a shinigami, ...or by herself? The woman that had looked back from the mirror before she left home was indeed a very different one from the shinigami in her black shihakusho, that had looked out of the glass just a few hours before. A little bit like Elyss, as she was sitting there in a quiet seat, off from the rest of the party.
Presently Hanako said:
"Thank you, Hime. I was not sure if it would be appropriate for the occasion. But I'm...glad you like it."
After a bit of hesitation she added:
"And...ah...thank you for the invitation."
She wasn't quite sure if it was customary to thank the host for an invitation, but it felt like the right thing to say.
Hanako looked over the room, the tables laden with food and drink, the people present…
She excused herself with a polite bow and went over to the tables, having spotted something that looked like a pot of tea. And indeed, there was one, not jasmine, her favourite, but green tea. She poured herself a cup and with it in hand she walked over to Elyss and stood next to her. She was facing the wall, away from Hanako.
"It's nice to see you, Elyss." Hanako said softly and in a tone that required no answer. It was a fact, an observation, and Hanako simply wanted Elyss to know. She could do with that whatever she wanted or nothing at all. Hanako knew that her red headed friend was not one for casual party conversation...neither was Hana herself. So she didn't try to force anything. Having said what she wanted to say in that moment she simply remained still where she stood and was, for the moment, content sipping her tea and observing the room.

"There is no need to thank the host, Hanako," Hime quipped as she smiled and ran a few fingers through her hair, awed by her choice of dress and how well it accentuated her body.
"I'm both proud to see you coming out of your shell and amazed at how well that dress looks on you. Please, help yourself to the food and drink. It may not mean much when I say this but thank you ladies for accepting my invite." Hime smiled gracefully as she watched Hanako bow out before walking over to Elyss. They were quite familiar with one another, and Hime had decided she would observe and eavesdrop while she entertained the minor guests with dazzling shows of floating origami.
She would only walk over there if Hanako or Elyss desired her presence.

A grunt of barbaric proportions is given to Hanako as an answer, the redhead lacking any femininity with her response. However, her eyes would move upwards to Hanako, again, looking the woman up and down. Mmm… What’s the correct thing to say here? Her head finds itself tilting slightly like a confused puppy, her expression faltering slightly with worry. She seemed unsure of herself for a moment, afraid to really open her mouth to express anything but her mild contempt for everything with no particular reason why. ‘It’s not that hard,’ She’d berate herself with a soft sigh and a slight shaking of her head.
“You’re different… I guess it’s only fair to say that you’re… ah… kind of cute, even.”
What awkward words have escaped from her mouth so suddenly. Ah, it’s way easier to compliment someone’s work ethic over their fashion. She’d let some air slip out from her mouth as her head turned away. She’s not flustered or anything, just perplexed by it all. Maybe she should just drop her guard and try to enjoy herself, but how? Partake in the food? Maybe? That sounds like a good plan, and it’d get her away from Hanako for a bit so she can better figure out how to do this casual conversation thing.
Getting up, she’d excuse herself with a word, moving to grab a plate. Cheesecake. Yes. A plate full of cheesecake. When was the last time she had this delicacy? Too long in her thoughts. Ah, there it is. As she plunges her fork into the cake and tastes it, her expression would soften to a degree one would have thought impossible. She even forgot all about Hanako that she had planned to return to as she went about her business, devouring the sweets she has acquired.

With a smile and a little blush Hanako took in Elyss's words. She hadn't expected them and she wasn't sure if Elyss meant them or simply said them because she thought they were expected. It was pretty much the same with Hanako. She wouldn't have known what to say, either.
"Thank you." She said.
When Elyss stood up to look at the various sweets, Hanako remained where she was for a moment and enjoyed being to herself in a room full of people. A part of her was wondering what went on in Elyss's head and if she tried to get away from Hanako. But then again there was no use in wondering, until now Hanako had never been able to read Elyss.
Soon the inevitable happened: Her cup was empty. With the desire for another cup she went over to the beverages. As she always did she inhaled the scent of the tea as she poured it. It had become something of a ritual and in her mind the tea tasted sweeter because of it. She saw Hime stand with some of the guests who Hanako didn't know. Following an impulse she went over to her.
"Hime…" she said, some insecurity audible in her voice. "You said you liked how the dress looks on me. Thank you. But...ahm...if I am honest, I didn't really choose it myself. I went to a store and the clerk picked it. I liked the flowery print and the fit and took it. But...ah, I don't really know anything about things like this. I mean, I have some sports wear, a formal kimono, a few Yukata… But I never really cared about fashion, you know. I don't even really understand what makes this dress a good choice for me."

Elyss was such a mysterious individual. She didn't seem as if she really enjoyed being here and yet she had hardly decided to leave, either. Hime didn't possess any disdain towards her for her cold disposition. The mere fact she had even come was enough for the graceful shinigami.
Continuing to serve the other guests, Hime turned to Hanako as she engaged in another conversation. Smiling at her revelations of the dress, Hime placed a hand on her shoulder and moved some of the hair from her eyes. Hime's amber orbs were supportive, motherly even, as she spoke to her peer.
"That's okay. Many women hardly know what suits them. It's why they chose so many outfits to fix the issue. I'd say I'm quite proud of you for showing up and stepping out of your comfort zone. Concerning the reason why it was an excellent choice..."
Hime would place a finger against her cheek as she continued.
"It accentuates your appearance in such a way as to mesh with your body. It doesn't look like it belongs anywhere else but you. It shows your curves and yet also, the strength of your body. Add to that a lovely face, and had I been anyone else but your peer, I might've been courting you by now," she quipped with a humorous smirk.
