The day had arrived. His last night as a human, spent drowning in sweet, sinful love. Now, he sat at the end of he and Calypso's bed in their home in the Demon World, his foot lightly shaking and bouncing. He tugged at his jacket sleeves, keeping the outerwear firmly held against him as he thought about what to do. Today was the day -- where he'd be converted from a human to a demon. He had come to terms with it, hadn't he?

So why in the hell was he still so scared?

Was it because, deep down, he still wasn't sure? No, that couldn't be it. He knew he was sure. Humanity had long since abandoned him, and for the longest time, he had found comfort and safety in the presence of devils, even falling in love with one. Didn't it make sense to shed what kept him different, shed what kept him weaker than them?

He could be stronger than before, to protect Calypso -- develop new powers, learn more about the creatures he spent so much time with, their world. There wasn't anything left for him to be a human...was there? He wanted to make Calypso happy, to protect her and love her as best as he could -- that was it.

These last sparks of uncertainty and anxiety continued to gnaw and nag at him as he sat there, contemplating the decision for what seemed like the millionth time.

ENTER THE DREAMER

She almost didn't want to wake up this morning. She wanted last night to last forever..

The mere thought that she was going to have to put Vanyel through intense pain triggered a sense of illness and fear in her. She had gotten up a little before him, and told him that when she returned they would begin. She wanted a little time in the sun, to breathe, to think about this, before she would do it. This was what he wanted, and if being a demon would make him happier.. She couldn't refuse that. She couldn't refuse being the one to turn him, either. She was up on the roof for about an hour before she would descend back into their new home, walking by the absurdly large kitchen to grab a tall glass, and would walk back to their bedroom.

"..Vanyel, it's time."

She stood at the doorway, her gaze loving but full of worry, as she held the glass in her hand. Each and every one of her footsteps felt heavier - literally, her footsteps would progressively get louder and louder as if she became heavier, until they suddenly lightened as she stood in front of him,

"..If you don't want to do this, it's alright to back out now - You aren't getting another chance later... There is no undoing this, this is a 'for as long as your soul exists' thing apart from maybe, one or two exceptional conditions, neither that I can do and neither you probably can survive."

With that explanation out of the way, the flesh upon her palm would abruptly split apart, holding her hand over the glass would a fast pouring of her shadowy blue blood would immediately fill the glass to the brim, before she took her hand away, shaking it a bit as she cringed from the pain,

"..If.. If you're one-hundred percent sure you want this.. Drink up, and brace yourself. This is definitely enough to trigger it immediately."

Offering him the glass, and a weary look, she would wait for his response to her, a slight tremble to her hand as she awaited his reaction.

Not a single sound came from the room as Calypso left. There was nothing but a eerie, quiet stillness that Vanyel didn't dare break. Each time he took in a breath, it always came out shaky. No matter what he did, that deep trepidation still hung over him, holding him by the throat. He had already come this far -- there wasn't really any real way to turn back at this point.

It would just be cowardice to back out this late in.

But, there was still something nagging at the back of his mind about the whole thing. As he sat there, thinking about it, he came to realize how little he knew about Calypso's personal thoughts of this entire thing. Every time it was brought up before, she always seemed so...scared. Even more scared than him, it seemed.

It nagged at him, hurt him, angered him -- feeling like there was something she wasn't telling him. It wasn't like he could just read her fuckin' emotions! He didn't have that! God, it was so fucking frustrating! He could hear her coming back, and he sighed softly. His head turned to look at her, seeing the glass in her hands and wincing as her hand split open, pouring her blood into it.

Vanyel slowly got to his feet, staring at the glass for a bit, before gently taking it from her...and setting it aside on the nightstand. Pulling her into his arms, he held her tightly, breaking the embrace only to tilt her head up and kiss her. He let out a shaky breath as he welcomed the feeling of heat and fireworks in his chest from the kiss.

"...Before we do this, I...I need to know. I need to know what you think about this. You always look so scared, and I hate it...I hate seeing you scared, Caly."

His hands rested on her shoulders as he paused.

"You keep telling me that you'll do it if it'll make me happy, but for Christ's sake, be selfish for once! Tell me what you think! Do you want me to be human?! Would you love me more if I was?! I don't just want you doing it for my sake, god damn it!"

Calypso watched him as he took the glass, quiet in her resignation to doing what would make him happy.. But her expression turned to confusion as he instead moved to place the glass on the nightstand instead, pulling her into a quick embrace,

"V-Vanyel, what are you-"

A strong flourish of a prismatic, shimmering blush hit her pale features as their lips would lock, her saddened silvery eyes widened into pale disks as that sensation of blood rushing, heart pumping passion hit her system, until Vanyel broke the kiss and spilled his guts - His wish, to hear what she had to say about this whole thing. She looked up at him, face wrought with a look of confusion and worry as he cried out and pleaded to her, tongue rolling both concern and insecurity as Calypso's lip quivered, still looking up at him as she would touch his cheek,

"..Vanyel. I love what makes you.. Be you."

A sad exhale would come from her parted lips as her heart was aflutter with a sense of heaviness underneath, "Whether you're a human or a demon doesn't matter to me, what matters to me is that you're the best and happiest you, you can possibly be. If you truly feel like that life would be happier for you as a demon, then I would want to help you see that to be reality."

Silvery tears pooled in her eyes as her expression finally gave way to the weakness in her heart, "What i'm actually afraid of.. Is hurting you... I don't want you to be hurt, but this process could hurt you, a lot, before the result.. And.. And..."

She hiccuped gently as she would then rub her face, a gentle whine in her throat as she would then steel herself to continue stating her mind's will, "I... I'm just afraid of putting you through something like that.. But.. But if this is what you really want.. I'll be here through the end.. Because I want you to be happy, Vanyel.."

Her face pressed against his chest as she pulled him into another hug. Her body was trembling, but she still held on, her voice muffled as tears rolled down his torso, "..I just want you to be happy.."

Every action she took always had so much warmth and love to it -- even so much as touching his cheek made his eyes widen as the human let out a quiet gasp, slowly reaching up to cup her hand in his own. His lip started to quiver as she spoke, his head dipping down in uncertainty. She wouldn't lie to him...it really didn't matter to her if he was human or demon?

But, before he could say anything, his heart sank.

No...

No, no, no, no, no...

She was crying.

He watched helplessly as tears welled up in her eyes and rolled down her cheeks, driving the knife deeper and deeper into his heart. "Awful" didn't even begin to describe how he felt for making her cry again. It hurt him to see her like this, now it hurt even more than it did before. He wanted to hold her forever, to kiss her, love her, do anything he could in his power to try and make her feel better and make her stop crying.

He wanted to see her smile, to hear her laugh, for her to be happy and safe -- not this. Every second that passed where she was crying only made him feel worse and worse. But, still, he held his tongue as tears began to well up in his eyes, his breathing getting shakier and shakier as time went on. His lip and his body trembled as she pulled him into another hug, with Vanyel wrapping his arms tightly around her.

If he could have his way, he would stay there for as long as he could. He kept her close as he tilted her head up to him, using his other hand to wipe her eyes of tears as he smiled warmly, his voice a broken whisper.

"You're such an idiot..."

He leaned in to kiss her once more, holding her cheek in his hand as his lips pressed against hers. Part of him never wanted to stop, to just keep showering her in this warm affection that set fire to his heart and soul all day, to forget about this whole demon shit and just...be with her.

But, after a short moment of silence, he brought her into his arms again.

"I want to turn into a demon so that...I can be strong, and protect you. So I can keep you safe and make you happy. That's...all I want."

He gave a sad, halfhearted chuckle as he ran his fingers through her hair.

"Besides...can't hurt me that easily. I was in the yakuza...remember?"

Despite his confidence, his body trembled -- and Calypso could see the truth of how he felt -- how scared he really was. His lip started quivering again, and a new stream of tears began to roll down his cheeks.

"But...if making you happy means that I stay human and I don't get hurt, then I'll stay human. I don't care what happens to me, I just..."

Vanyel let out a shaky breath as his arms tightened around Calypso.

"I just want to keep seeing you smile..."

Calypso's sweet tears ran down her face as she felt Vanyel's touch, bringing them all the closer as she heard his heart, full of ache and care for her. It made her own heart throb with guilt and concern. She wanted him to feel happy and safe, to be the best version of himself he could ever be, thats what she could ever want or expect out of anyone, but Vanyel in particular was special to her. She had taken such a liking to someone so unlikely. Was it just a natural fondness, or was the man so deep in his own little rabbit hole that she was drawn to pull him out? It didn't matter what caused her to feel such strong fondness for him, she knew she loved him inside and out, and nothing would make that dwindle in her mind.

Her eyes were wide as he pulled her in for another kiss, something she didn't mind him doing whenever he wished. Each and every lip lock felt natural and warm, full of care that she couldn't say no to. When that fleeting moment was once again broken, the two brought back into the present situation, Calypso looked at him, tired and sad, but she had a warm smile. Reaching up and touching his cheek, her eyes would flutter somewhat before shutting, a soft laugh escaping her pale lips,

"I wouldn't compare the pain of transformation, to what pain being in the yakuza could bring, but.. I want you to care about what happens to you."

Her grasp tightened as she continued, "Why do you think i've been putting myself through hell and back? I'm trying to make a better world, for us, for everyone. I'm trying to get strong enough so that I can protect everyone.. Especially you."

Her voice grew weak, her tears slowly stopping as she wiped away his own, "I'm trying to be strong for you, but.. If you want to do that for me, and if you feel like being a demon could better serve that desire..."

A tendril drew the glass over to the two, the demon grasping it in her hands and offering it to Vanyel, "Then drink, and become a demon. I just didn't want you feeling like you had to do this. I didn't want to pressure you."

Her face grew stern, though that look of exhausted care dwelled in her silver eyes,

"So if this is what you truly desire, drink."

She was trying to be strong for him? Vanyel let out a quiet scoff as she wiped away his tears, his eyes turning to the floor. His lip quivered slightly as she brought the glass back over to them, holding it out for him to take. Slowly reaching out and taking the glass in his hands, he stared down at the murky blue blood within. This was it -- the last chance at a choice.

Part of him still didn't feel ready. His hands began to tremble as he continued to stare at the glass, trying to reassure himself for what felt like the millionth time that this was what he wanted -- that he wanted to protect her, to keep her safe, to be strong enough so that no one could ever hurt her again.

He couldn't do that as a human -- he had too many limits.

Turning to a demon would give him so much more than this. Maybe, after he did this, he'd be truly accepted into the family and kingdom. He'd be more than just a human, more than just a thing. He'd finally belong somewhere again. He wouldn't be alone, wasting away in this world, among creatures that long since abandoned him and stopped caring about him. Maybe...he'd have a family again, like the old days.

He had to do this -- for her sake, not just for him. So, as a warm smile slowly spread across his face, he cupped her cheek in his hand.

"You're already strong, Caly, but...I still want to keep you safe. I want to keep making you smile, and make sure you never get hurt again."

Bringing the glass to his lips, he tilted his head back, tasting the sweet, honey-like blood as it slid down his throat. It didn't take him long to empty the glass, setting it down on the nightstand as he started to make his way to the bed, sitting down and gripping the sheets tightly. His eyes darted around, from looking at Calypso, to the wall, to the ceiling, to the floor. He still wasn't sure what he was supposed to expect. He wasn't feeling anything...for now, at least.

So far, he was just feeling lighter and lighter...

The man let out quiet chuckling as a small grin spread across his face as he turned to look at the ceiling.

It was like his worries and concerns were just...floating away...

She smiled, soft and sweet as he cupped her cheek, raising to touch his arm with her slim pale fingers, leaning into his touch and sighing softly, "You're such a kind, gentle man. I yearn for the day that you see what I can see in you."

She slowly dropped her hands as she watched him drink her essence, smiling wearily as she clutched his arm, ensuring he'd make it to the bed okay, and standing in front of him as he sat down. She could already sense his emotions starting to lighten up and float away. She placed her hands on his shoulders, watching his eyes go from full of intent, to completely lacking in focus.

"..Maybe you should lie down, huh?" She gently would nudge his body to lay down on the bed, her heart skipping a beat as she was worried for him, but felt at ease that at least he didn't freak out immediately, "..How ya feeling? Still with me?"

Despite how gone he felt, he still could hear her. She sounded so distant...but he could hear her, and he held onto her. His hands kept a firm grip on her arm, his eyes trained on her, despite their lack of focus. As she called him kind and gentle, yearning for the day when he saw what she saw in him...tears started to well up in his eyes, though he didn't speak.

He wasn't.

He really wasn't.

He wasn't kind...or, at least he didn't see how he could be kind. He was only nice to her because he loved her so much, he didn't want to hurt her because he knew that it would tear him apart inside, and he knew that he would never be able to handle that. As his eyes closed for a moment to try and blink away his tears, he heard her say that he should lay down, gently nudging his body.

He didn't argue, only nodding slowly as a way of showing that he heard her before he slowly laid back, resting against the pillow as he squeezed her hand tightly, wincing at the ceiling light. Had it always been so bright...?

He blinked a few times, trying to adjust to it before turning his head to face Calypso as she spoke again, asking how he was feeling.

"Mm...I feel...light, but...part of me feels scared. The lights feel really bright, for some reason...have they always been that bright?"

He squeezed her hand tighter, pausing for a moment.

"...I don't feel anythin' yet. No pain, nothing. Is...is that bad? Did something go wrong?"

Calypso gently stroked his hand as she felt him grasp her arm, wishing to be with him during these grueling stages as she noticed his sensitivity to the light, smiling sympathetically as she waved a hand to shut the light off, darkening the room as she stayed with him, gently shuffling onto the edge of the bed as she continued to stroke him, her fingers running through his hair as she listened to him speak,

"It's okay if you aren't feeling pain. You'll be fine, nothing's going wrong. Even if it does, i'll make sure you're safe, I promise."

She slowly leaned down, kissing him on the forehead, "Is there anything you want to talk about? I'm all ears."
