And, here she comes, crashing down like the London Bridge. Unfortunately, Elyss is versus an opponent with, at least, some form of combat experience. Enough, that is, to keep from smashing the back of her head against the hard ground. If the redhead was just a spectator, she would have clapped her hands in a supportive nature. But, in this competition, the only person who’s allowed to get prompts is the victor. The other will most likely have to suffer through being given advice by some wise sage or whatever. It’s always a giant however. Has Elyss ever faced an opponent in a serious bout that wasn’t at least twice her size? Hanako, rising, appeared akin to a large mountain in retrospect, as if Elyss were a main character in a new 2D side scroller hero game. The smile, that excited reaction to a strong opponent and expected bloody showdown. Elyss knows it all too well, for it is something she has donned on multiple occasions. It seems Hanako has a bit of a crazed side as well.

Maybe crazed is too strong a word. Maybe Elyss is allowing for her unorthodox mindset to categorize Hanako. It doesn’t matter. She has an opponent that’s ready to throw hands.

Blink.

Huh? Hanako is before her in the next step. Ah, she was too busy in her own head, a fatal error. Elyss’ feet are quick to react, a step back being taken to prepare for an evasion attempt. However, Hanako is at her left side in a flash, such fast movements for a big gal. Tch. She could feel her arm being grabbed and pulled taunt. This maneuver… It’s screaming to move or have something snap. Neither shall occur. One wouldn’t have risked such a thing against an unknown opponent, someone that you know little about. Hanako could have sported strength beyond Elyss’ capabilities, but that is not the case here. So many battles, so many injuries. They have all conjoined to twist Elyss’ body into something stronger and more dangerous than it used to be. Now is the time to flex her growth.

Hanako would feel Elyss move little as she attempted to spin the redhead to the ground. Infact, her attempt would find itself halted completely as Elyss’ right foot stomped hard on the ground, causing the floor beneath them to crack and groan from the sudden exertion of her leg. Her left arm is suddenly taunt and immovable as veins pop all along her skin, showing the strength she is forcing to keep her arm abay and unbroken. How many times has she had herself snapped like a twig? It was only a matter of time before she became unbreakable. Just a look at the redhead eyes would show a sudden flare to them, equal to her flaming mane, that winked in and out of existence just like that.

“Nice try…” Her only words given to Hanako as her right hand would squeeze into a tight fist, veins popping out over her knuckles. This punch is going to hurt, it’s meant to hurt. That smile that she was wearing has vanished as Elyss’ demeanor seemed to grow serious from concentration. “I suggest letting go.” The plan here is obvious. Elyss doesn’t seem to actually want to hurt Hanako however. Her punch is slow, yet, aimed for the other’s stomach. There is plenty of time to get out of the way. It doesn’t even seem as if the redhead is planning on securing herself after the punch, opening her body for another attack if Hanako so wished to attempt to dance around the redhead.

Since Hanako's technique she tried to pull on Elyss was based on leverage, which could be enforced by strength, even against someone slightly stronger, there was only one way inside the confines of hand-to-hand-combat out of it: significantly superior strength.

When Hanako managed to grab Elyss arm as she had intended but then ran into a wall she realised instantly that she had gambled upon an unknown factor and lost. Elyss was strong enough to withstand the initial twist. That was very unfortunate. Would Hanako have managed to bring the arm into the position she had wanted, it would have been completely immobilized and all physical strength wouldn have done any good. But in an instant, Elyss stiffened her arm in a way that halted Hanako's attempt. At the same time, the redhead cracked open the ground.

In the mere fractions of seconds it dawned on Hanako that she was in trouble if she didn't release that hold now. Her suspicions were confirmed when she heard Elyss' words and saw her move. She moved slowly, but even Hanako could gauge the swing as powerful enough to hurt.

She let go of Elyss' left arm and took a spinning step into Elyss' back. For a moment the two women stood back to back, but Hanako couldn't risk stopping here. A simple ninety-degree spin to her left and Elyss could just reach her again.
So Hanako continued to spin to her own left, took another step and ducked…
...and then she would use the momentum she had build up through the spinning and the strength of her upper body and right arm, to throw a punch, aimed at Elyss' ribs right under her right arm.

Agile. Too agile. How dare such a big person prove capable of such feats?! So annoying. Why do so many people get the upper hand on her? It happens everytime. She’s grown stronger, right? Faster, right? Better, right? Of course, she’s holding back, but even with that fact, she shouldn’t feel so cornered. Even without all her strength, her combat prowess should just be better, right? Ah, those intrusive thoughts are piercing her mind again. This is just a spar. She shouldn’t allow herself to lose her cool so easily. The punch she tried to throw already proved far too dangerous for something like this, and, at least, she had enough self-control to make sure that Hanako could dodge it without issue.

Back to back, how absurd. Elyss could only wonder how she could improve herself. Yeah, that’s it. All she’s been doing is throwing strong punches at her opponents. Only once has she used an actual technique to win a fight. Every Hollow has fallen to her simply because she hit them with everything she has, but wouldn’t life have been easier if she had hit them precisely and with a technique that would have proven more deadly than a strong punch? Her mind had a sudden moment of clarity moments before Hanako’s right fist entered into the side of her ribcage.

There’s a silent grunt that slipped from Elyss’ mouth, but the redhead didn’t seem all to disturbed. In fact, her person remained startling stoic as a deep breath was taken. The pain is there, but it seems more like white noise in the back of her head as her upper body would twist, her right side dropping as her left rose. Hanako went in for a strike that landed true, but that’s exactly how Elyss’ fighting style prospers. Much like last time, the bigger woman had committed to a strike that would have surely dropped a lot of people, but for Elyss, a person who’s fighting style thrives on trading blows, Hanako would find herself at a disadvantage. Some would relate Elyss to a boxer, her style some kind of mixed creation of Muhammad and Tyson: dodge, bait, take a hit, deliver a harder hit. It all flows together so easily and makes her a dangerous opponent because landing a blow on her without knocking her down is a sign that something gruesome is soon to come.

With the way her body twisted, her left arm rising, a fist formed and ready. She turns aggressively as her left arm follows her body’s spin. This punch is going to hurt, but just to make matters worse, Elyss’ right arm shot downwards right into the side of Hanako’s outstretched arm, slapping it outwards roughly to force Hanako out of balance by ruining her stance and core and to force her to lean towards her right which should leave her left considerably weaker. There’s fire in Elyss’ eyes, raw determination to knock Hanako out with this hit alone. Her palm is facing downwards just so she can bury everyone of her knuckles into the top side of Hanako’s head. However, when the punch came, it would sail over Hanako’s head, yet, the force of it would create a sudden gale of wind that didn’t exist before around the two women that would flow past them both. Elyss would be left breathing hard and slow. Then, move to back up quickly.

A jolt of excitement raced through Hanako's mind when her fist landet exactly where she had aimed it. Yes, this was it. She really seemed to be on top…

She felt Elyss' movement before she saw it. But there was no chance to avoid what was coming. Her hand was slapped away, which brought her out of balance. And then she faceplanted into the ground.

What the heck was that just now? She hadn't felt Elyss' knuckles connect with her head, yet it was as if a huge hand had slapped her to the ground. Was it really just the gust of wind, coming from a fist, sailing right over her head? Sure, Habako might have been out of balance, but this demonstration of sheer strength did have an impact, other than the obvious. It was maddening frustrating that basically every person she encountered in the Seireitei was stronger than her. She could throw herself at as many opponents for sparring as she liked, yet it felt as if she was running against a wall.

No, she couldn't allow those thoughts again. Each and every time the frustration had grabbed those damned thoughts out of the dark corners of her mind. But she wasn't like that anymore. Didn't want to be like that anymore.
Fortunately the growing part of Hanako that really enjoyed the fight made it a lot easier to push back the dark thoughts.

Spitting dirt and dust, she got up. A few scratches decorated her left cheek now. They were only superficial, not even really bleeding or swelling, but like most of these scratches they burned as if they were a lot more severe. Hanako ignored it and got back into a stance immediately. With one hand she wiped a bit of dust out of her eye.

"Nice one." She forced herself to say. "If we continue just a little bit more I might start to really enjoy this."

With the last word, Hanako jumped forward again. Again she changed her direction, when she reached Elyss, stepped to the side, like before. Only this time she didn't attack frozn the side, but executed a straight chop downwards, aimed at the crest of Elyss' head, hoping to provoke the readhead to block the attack over her head. In that case she'd exploit the opening at Elyss lower body with a kneestrike.

There’s something familiar about Hanako. Elyss couldn’t tell from just looking at the larger woman, but there’s a sudden feeling in the back of her head, like a familiarity. It’s almost as if Hanako’s frustration became a palpable substance in the air that the redhead could feel sweep against her skin and tickle the tiny hairs sprouting from her arms; goosebumps even. Maybe these two women share a common knowledge about the unfairness of the world. Funny. This is the first time Elyss has had a readily noticeable advantage over her opponent. Though, she seems different from before, as if the joy of fighting had been sucked out of her earlier. Elyss didn’t crack a smile nor speak back to Hanako. Her eyes are steely dots in her head that are nothing but focused on the task at hand.

Taking her stance, she doesn’t move at first as Hanako charges at her. She waits until Hanako is close and does the same sidestep from before. Elyss knows that an attack comes next. The light above her is eaten by the shadow created by Hanako’s arm as the woman moves to chop her against her head. Even if the pain would be minimal, it’d still hurt so Elyss raised her left arm up to stop the chop in its tracks. However, that’s when she’d notice the leg coming right for her gut. Her right arm would move, her forearm taking Hanako’s knee dead on. Suddenly, at that moment, her right arm would suddenly seize up from the impact. Dammit! Her right side is in so much pain all of a sudden that it forces her to push Hanako back with all her might and recoil, gripping her right arm tightly against her person and doubling over onto one knee.

The new feint had worked. As Hanako had hoped, Elyss parried the above chop and was left half open to a knee-strike. But that woman was fast. Even though the two were so close, Hanako could almost feel the bodily warmth, radiated from the red headed fighter in the midst of combat, Elyss managed to bring her right forearm between her and Hanako, blocking the leg. Hanako tensed up her body in expectation of a counterattack.

But it didn’t come. Suddenly something in Elyss changed. At first Hanako had no idea what was going on. With surprising force, she was pushed back and had to fight for a moment to not lose her balance. When she regained it, she immediately lifted her arms into a defensive position...but Elyss still didn’t press back. Instead, she was clenching her right arm, pressing it against her, hunched on one knee. She couldn see the other one’s face, but Hanako just felt that Elyss was in pain. A cold knot of concern formed in her stomach pit. What had happened? Was that her doing? Despite whatever else might have been between them, this was just training after all and it had never been her intention to really hurt Elyss.

She gave up her stance and with a few steps was next to the other woman. Lowering herself down on one knee, Hanako gently and consciously touched Elyss’ left shoulder.

“Hey, are you alright?” she asked. Honest concern could be heard in Hanako’s voice.
“Can I help?”

“I’m fine. It’s just- It’s nothing.”

Her deep breaths are ragged. It feels as if the bone in her right forearm had snapped, but the fact that she could still flex her fingers meant that it was probably just a really bad bruise. Though, her muscles aren’t happy whatsoever. They continuously spasm and then tighten up as if unknowing of what to do as her nerves fire off random signals throughout her arm. It seems her ignorance to the state of her own body has left her broken. Yet, she doesn’t want to show Hanako too much.

“I just forgot about pacing myself is all. I’ll be fine after a bit.”

If Hanako’s knee was enough to cripple her like this, then Elyss is totally incapable of doing anything against an actual threat. That’s a problem. This is the result of her constant body abuse without getting any true form of medical support. It has nothing to do with Hanako. They both already knew that Elyss had an issue with her right side, but it seems the redhead had lost care for the warnings.

Tilting her head up slightly, she couldn’t help but crack a small smirk through her disheveled mass of hair before fixing her position so that she’s sitting on the ground. Her right is still being held close to her body as she shows an impressive tolerance for pain.

“You’re pretty good.”

Hanako Yamada

Broken Fists, Staunch Defense (Elyss/Hanako) - Page 2 6EdIfMt

Hanako considered Elyss’ words for a moment. They were a typical defence reaction of someone who didn’t want to lose face in front of a stranger. Hanako knew this well. It was what she herself had done and still did. In the beginning she trusted roughly not a single person and wouldn’t let anyone close enough. It was always ‘I’m fine, it’s nothing’, even though it almost never really was. And here it wasn’t as well. She could see the muscles spasm. Hanako really wished she could do something, but she wasn’t a medically inclined person and had simply no idea. If this was just simple cramps, she could help stretch and relax the muscles. At least that was what helped her if she again overdid it and suffered from cramps. But if it was something else, she could hurt Elyss even more and she almost desperately wanted to avoid that.

“Funny that it’s also your right arm.” she said suddenly. It was something she just realised, something that actually connected the two women. She continued to explain her words before Elyss would have to ask.
“The injury, I mean. I...erm, I’m more or less in the same boat.”

She moved the fabric on her shoulder a few centimeters aside. Smooth skin was exposed. With her finger she pointed to a very faint line, a few centimeters farther inwards than the cut-out for the arm on her sleeveless Shihakusho. The line was probably invisible to anyone that didn’t know what to look for: It was a very fine line, like a border, and on the side of the arm the skin was ever so slightly lighter. The difference was so minute that it could only be seen when one looked at that fine line for comparison. But to Hanako it was as if the arm was pure white and the rest of her body a deep black.

“There, this line...that’s were the artificial skin meets the real skin. The whole arm is a prosthesis. I lost it about eight years ago.”

She let the words hang in the air, without further comment, offering Elyss the comfort of a person who knew what it was like, recovering from something serious, although Hanako didn’t know to this day why she had lost her arm. There wasn’t necessarily anything Elyss needed to reply to that. Hanako just wanted her to know. She understood. She didn’t expect Elyss to push herself, not for a simple training. She had been intrigued and amused by the woman that had demolished a dummy, and although it would be a pity if they had to break off now, the sparring wasn’t that important after all.

When Elyss sat down on the ground, Hanako also sat down on her knees in a seiza.

“Thank you. I spend most of my free time training.” she said and couldn’t avoid smiling back when she returned the Elyss’ gaze. Again she realized that the redhead was really beautiful, even now.
“You are as well. After all, you actually blocked my knee with your injured arm. You are strong.”

The last words were stating facts. Hanako felt that Elyss strength was above hers. That one slow punch...if Elyss had done that faster, so that Hanako didn’t have the chance to evade it, it would have hurt a lot. If they’d met head on, just stand before each other and punch in turns until one’s lights went out, Hanako would definitely lose quickly. Fortunately it seemed that both women would find such a contest utterly boring and hardly worth their time.

“I lost my right arm as well. It has always been my reckless side.”

That’s her response, looking over Hanako’s arm. That thin line isn’t something one would notice without undressing the larger woman and inspecting her body. Though, it would prove an interesting topic for whoever decides to bed the Shinigami, a topic that’d kill the mood near instantly or work to improve it. Some people like that solemn moment that is followed by a loving kiss or whatever. That’s how some of the romance stories she’s read went. This is far from a love story however. If anything, it’s a boring gritty take on reality.

Elyss doesn’t seem to have any real sympathy in her gaze however. It’s as if she’s just accepting what’s in front of herself at face value, life is what it is after all. Hanako has an arm despite losing her original one. That’s all that matters. The redhead doesn’t feel like getting into the specifics of her past transgressions though, and it shows with how her smirk fell, her eyes growing distant and looking off to the side. Comfort… Is that what she’s supposed to feel right now? Tch. Finding someone who's kindred in a way doesn’t exactly make you feel better about your situation. It just means more have suffered and more will suffer. Maybe some are suffering right now. It’s a grim thought, but it’s what keeps her moving sometimes, keeps her grounded and focused.

“I shouldn’t have blocked. I would have been better off taking the hit. My arm wouldn’t have spasmed as it did. I was being too reckless despite already knowing I wasn’t at my best. You have potential though, like I do. People are always letting me know how far I have to go, they’re always encouraging me. It’s annoying to think about sometimes. Don’t get caught up in it. Keep fighting and keep growing at your own rate. Eventually, you’ll get there, with them.”

That was a random bout of estranged inspiration. But, it is a way to change the subject off of their bodies to keep her own troubled past from surfacing. Either way, having something in common with another is flustering to say the least. Elyss doesn’t really know where to take the conversation besides just focusing on the bout that just occurred. Her social skills are being impeccable right now. So, silence would befall the two because she doesn’t know where to go with this. Maybe Hanako does.

There was a short moment...it came...it went. It was in those short moments, when Hanako could really feel a connection to somebody else, meet someone that had endured some of what she had to, that she felt how she hated being alone. But making connections wasn't that easy and despite her best efforts, it were Hanako's social skills that needed training far more than her combat skills. Only that those would probably be no help for a grunt like her if it came to defending Soul Society.

"I know what you mean." Hanako said, when the subject suddenly changed.

A part of her was sad, that the fleeting moment of connection was gone. Since that one certain day something was awake inside her and she couldn't help but notice certain things when she looked at someone like Elyss. It made losing the connection that much harder.
Another part, and sadly it was still a fairly big part, was glad that they didn't delve deeper into personal pasts. Because it was then that Hanako always had to face the fact that there was still not much she could talk about.

"I admit, I have begun to seek out help myself. But sometimes you get more than what you asked for."

Hanako couldn't prevent grimacing for a second when she thought about that day again. She pushed it quickly aside.

"So...what do we do now?" She finally asked with a side glance at Elyss' arm. It didn't look like they could continue.
